Of course thats what the storm is doing now. What it has already done is simply devastating. The bahamas finally assessing the enormous historic damage there. We know that seven paem haeople died. Thats just the initial count. You can expect it to rise. Rescues have been going on nearly around the clock but theyre extremely difficult because the conditions havent improved enough to save the people who might be hiding out on rooftops. Abaco island, devastated. Grand bahama island, devastated. They are only now beginning to get a true sense of the damage there. Throughout the morning were going to speak to our correspondents who have made it to those islands also to people who rode out the storm there to find out what is happening as best we can. In the meantime, let us track the path of Hurricane Dorian to find out how close it might be to landfall in the united states. Lets go to chad myers in the weather center. It looks like the carolinas due to the way the topography is and the way the land curves to the east will get something. Whether it will be the eye or not, it will be close to the eye wall. And the center of the eye is calm. We dont care about that. It is the eye wall that is the most dangerous. You are going to be wet all day long today. At least all this morning. Because the wind is pushing around the storm and the rain is from lady lake to jacksonville this morning with one band after another coming on shore. You will make get some breaks in the rain, but it will be a day full of wind, a day full of gusts somewhere in the ballpark like 60. Latest hour here daytona had 35. Couple of buoys in the ocean up to 76. Those winds will work their way around the storm and back onto land. When we talk about the storm curving away, will it curve away fast enough . Because you see how the ocean kind of curves this way and the land curves this way. As the model takes it to the right, itll be just offshore. The model eye is about 25 miles in radius, not diameter. Radius. If its 25 miles off shore, that means the eye will be on land. The biggest surge charleston ever had was 12. 5 feet and that was during hugo. But a 7. 5 foot surge takes them around 10. 3 feet. And that is only 2. 5 feet short of where it was with hugo. Water will be going up. Were probably not going to break hugos record, but this is coming in second. Well keep watching for you as the day goes on. Models are coming in. The Hurricane Hunter in the plane now in the eye looking at the storm. We will get more updates hourly for sure. All right. Were going to get a chance to speak to one of the Hurricane Hunters up in the air right now in a little bit. Stand by for us and keep us posted. As weve been saysaying, the bahamas only now getting a sense of the real devastation. Our Patrick Oppmann and his team has been there for days. They finally had a chance to get out and see the damage for themselves. Patrick oppmann joins me now. Tell me what youve seen. Reporter good morning. You know, it is the first day you can feel any sense of hope. The wind is not blowing down on us. The rain is not spitting down on us. And this means fanlly they should be able to get in help with the planes or helicopters should be able to be landing as soon as they can get the airport up and running. And rescues should begin to happen today. You know, up until now, weve seen an allvolunteer force out there rescuing people. So time is of the essence because there have been people out there, john, waiting for days for any kind of help. One jet ski ride, one boat trip at a time, these bahamians are saving the lives of neighbors and complete strangers. Theirs is a dangerous mission. Hurricane force winds are still raging here. Howard armstrong was rescued after his house flooded to the ceiling. His house was one of hundreds lost as storm surges from dorian swallowed whole neighborhoods. Armstrongs wife didnt make it. It came over the roof. I would imagine 21 feet at least. We were doing all right until the water kept coming up and all the appliances were going around the house like a washing machine. Probably got hit with something in there. And my poor little wife got hypothermia and she was standing on top of the Kitchen Cabinets until they disintegrated. And i kept with her and she just drowned on me. Reporter im so sorry. I know. I know. Reporter how did you get out . I got out i had a big boat anchored in there. Im a crab fisherman and i have a 40 footer which stayed there. So i didnt think it was there. So i had got out of the house after my wife drowned and because you couldnt be in there anymore. I had no tools to chop a hole in the ceiling. So i saw my boat was still there and i swam. I took a chance and swam out to it. Reporter theres no power on grand bahama island. No running water. Sporadic cell service at best. Submerged cars block many roads. Maybe the last thing working here is this allvolunteer crew of boaters risking their lives to save lives. Dorian fights them every trip they make. People coming with what they have. The jet skis they have. They are dealing with horrible weather conditions. Its not safe to be out in a boat right now. Its not safe to be out here at all yet they know there are people out there. Reporter while we are there, the winds flip a jet ski. This rescuer says there isnt much time left. They are exhausted. Some we had to carry. Some couldnt make it. Some we put on the jet ski. First we found was my brother. He was clinging onto a tree and he made it out safe. But we were unable to locate his wife at the moment. We hope that shes okay. But the rescue goes on. We have a lot of people supporting us. Everybody working as a team. Its very hard, you know what im saying, but we shall overcome. Reporter you made it. Dozens have been rescued but many remain in total desperation as they spend their third night waiting for salvation. And a small sign of hope last night as the sun was going down. We saw what appeared to be a coast guard helicopter flying over this island. Theres not been any contact really with the outside world. No planes have come in, no helicopters were aware of to do rescues. The rescue has finally cleared. And today has to be the day that health, food, resources come in. So many people are suffering. We tried to go to other places yesterday and were just not able to. Downtown freeport where the hospital is completely over capacity. The airport is flooded and communities around the airport that are flooded. These bahamian rescue workers are doing their best. It is far from everything this island needs. This island needs so much more and time is running out. Patrick, i have to tell you what a relief it is to hear your voice to know that you and give everything thats thank you for your continuing reporting from there. And our heart breaks for the man you met who lost his wife inside their home as she drowned. Its a grim question, patrick. But right now the bahamian Authorities Say the death count fatalities is at seven. Seven people. I know that number is expected to rise. But based on what youve seen in your brief tour of the island, will that number rise dramatically . Reporter well, that number doesnt include anybody from grand bahama. I think theyre only talking about people from abaco. Doesnt include any deaths im aware of from grand bahama. I spoke to multiple people yesterday that said they had seen bodies or they had missing family members. Or that theyd seen family members taken away from the storm. That man Howard Armstrong who was just absolutely in shock and himself nearly died and showed us the bruises all over his body from being beaten nearly to death by the floating debris, he said his neighbor had been calling to him and his wife all nagt long and they were not able to get to their neighbor. And after his wife passed away, he swam out of the house, somehow made it out of the house. He went over to his neighbors house to see if he could rescue her. He said she was dead and he saw her body. I think were only at the beginning, john. Only beginning. You said no contact yet from the official bahamian government because the conditions just havent been good enough. When they are able to get helicopters in, patrick, the reporter its got to be today. I understand when we were shooting that story, it was still Hurricane Forced winds that were knocking the hell out of us. We tried to get on one of those boats. Thank god the rescuers said its too dangerous. Because they were getting flipped over on their jet skis and on their boats. As the storm was pulling off the shore, the tides were dramatically going up and down. And they were going into these neighbors full of debris and the tide would very incredibly quickly by several feet. It was very dangerous what they were doing yesterday. These guys are skilled boat men. And they were really on a mission that they said they would never have attempt Fire Department they didnt know the lives of their families and neighbors and fellow bahamians were on the line. It was harrowing stuff. Theres no excuse today. Helicopters have to be able to land. Resources have to be able to get in. I know there are people, rescue workers in the bahamas have been waiting for today. Today is the day. It is absolutely calm and still it is the first day since really we landed here since before the storm that there are decent weather conditions. I think today the window is open and its going to be a tremendous amount of work. We have seen thats just one small part of this island we were able to get to yesterday. There is so much more. There are so many other places that wre couldnt get to because submerged cars were blocking the road. And we could not get to anywhere except that one place. And john, you know, where they were staging that boat rescue, it was a bridge. Yet the bridge was under water. Think of that. Bridges go over water. And this bridge was completely under water. We couldnt see the bridge at all. It was completely submerged. As the waters recede, i think what were going to see is just going to be stunning. Patrick oppmann again, thank you for the work youre going. To your entire team that has been there through the storm and after the storm. In many ways it gets more difficult now for all of you. So thank you for all the work youre doing. Well check back with you as soon as we can. And know there are rescue teams that are trying to get to you from nassau. Theres been frustration they cant get there. Hopefully when the sun comes up, theyll be there shortly. So thank you, patrick. And alisyn, back to you in new york. The stories patrick was telling. The bridge thats supposed to go over water, thats under water. And that poor man Howard Armstrong who now has to take care of himself and is out looking for his friends, we may be about to hear many more stories like this. John, that story was so gut wrenching. I mane, were thankful to patricks story so we can see the human loss. I mean, the idea that you have to watch your wife succumb to hypothermia and then die drown before your eyes, it is so heart breaking. And as you say, thats just one. So obviously a lot is going to be happening this morning as the sun comes up and we understand exactly whats happened there. Well back back to you soon. This morning authorities are giving cnn more into about how the west texas gunman got the gun in a private sale. One that would have been stopped with universal background checks. Ed lavandera is live with the latest. What have you learned, ed . Reporter good morning. We also understand that the gunman at least previously tried to purchase a weapon through a licensed dealer. But we have learned that back in 2014 a background check that seth ator applied for was denied. He failed that background check. But then later on goes on to purchase the weapon used in the shooting spree here in odessa through a private sale. Investigators here say they are aggressively trying to trace back where and who sold him the gun to trace back its origins as well. And we should point out that generally all of this is legal. This is known as the gun show loophole that many gun reform advocates have been pushing to close through universal background checks. So a great deal of questions still remain to be answered over exactly how and how this weapon was purchased and exactly the reasons for why that background check was failed to begin with. Back in 2014, we spoke with the widow of one of the victims. Rudy arco who was killed here in odessa. His wife tell us hes generally a supporter of President Trump who has gone back and forth on whether or not to support universal background checks. And she says shes desperately hoping President Trump does something about this now. How he said he wants to make America Great again, we want him to say that he wants to americans to be saved again. Its unfair that congress, somebody needs to do something fast before another victim, another family, another kid, another dad. Thats uncalled for. Please do something. Reporter and alisyn, we should point out one of the tragic parts of this familys story is that rudy arco moved to odessa from las vegas in part because he left that city after the massacre there thinking that odessa would be a safer place to live. Alisyn . Ed, people are not safe anywhere right now or certainly not immune from mass shootings. They happen in every Single Community from the smallest to the biggest city. And that was really interesting to hear from that victims wife. Thank you so much for that story. Now to this connected big development. Walmart announcing that they will stop selling all handgun and short barrel rifle ammunition one month after 20 people were killed in a walmart in el paso. The company is also asking to not openly carry guns inside its stores. Now other major retailers are following suit. This is a big deal. It is. And this open carry thing has been a problem. There have been multiple snenlts of people coming in openly brandishing their firearm to test their rights and the response of walmart and protecting their rights. That has caused concern and confusion among customers. So walmart is saying no more open carry. Please dont bring your guns into our stores even if there are open carry laws there. Walmart also asking lawmakers to do their part. Doug mcmillon sending a letter to congress saying there are multiple bills that address the issue of gun safety and are worth examining. He specifically cites stronger background checks and a reauthorization of the assault weapons ban. But Mitch Mcconnell doesnt seem to be motivated to take action. If the president took a position on a bill. So that we knew we would actually be making a law and not just having serial votes, id be happy to put it on the floor. On a Conference Call with house democrats, Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged her caucus to keep the pressure up on mcconnell to introduce gun legislation. Also on tuesday, the grocery chain kroger asked its customers also, please dont open carry guns in those stores even in open carry states. Kroger stopped selling guns last year. While walmart is ending all handgun ammunition sales, it will continue to sell long barrelled deer rifles and ammunition for those guns. It talks about its history as a sportsmans retailer. They will allow concealed carries in its stores. But imagine the position wal ma rt is in. It is likely the largest ammunition retailer. Its the largest retailer of everything in the country, right . And it also has been a crime scene more than once of gun violence. So that is the tricky position that this company is in. And that makes their decision all the more bold. Sure. The idea they took this. They know theyre going to face backla backlash. And they already are. So well see. Some of these incidents with people coming in even in, you know, like in black trench coats and with a big long gun and trying to establish their Second Amendment rights and challenge the company, that is really theres the safety and security of your customers that is paramount here. I feel for all the clerks there today. Thank you very much for telling us all of those developments. This is cnns special live coverage of Hurricane Dorian. Were getting a steady rain here and consistent wind, but so far this morning not as many of the very powerful outer bands passing over at least not yet. We are expecting that to pick up in the coming hours throughout the morning. It has caused several thousand Power Outages along the florida coast up in South Carolina where the storm could make landfall tomorrow. More than 200,000 people 200,000 peopleplus have mauved off the low lying areas to get out of the storms way. Lets find out how things are going elsewhere. Nick, tell me your conditions. Reporter john, residents here have waited more than a week to feel the effects and impact of Hurricane Dorian. And the last 24 hours they have. Were on indiaatlantic beach here where the rain has been more of the factor. Beach erosion will no doubt play a factor or be a factor in the coming days. This area of Brevard County has been under mandatory evacuation since 1 00 p. M. On monday. You wouldnt be able to tell that. There are a lot of residents who stuck this out. I think it has been fatigue and complacency. At our hotel yesterday some that evacuated said they were going back home deciding to ride out the storm there. As the storm goes north of us here, those north of us wont be so lucky. All right. Nick valencia for us. There have been a number of elderly who have been evacuated from a home much closer to the water so they can get a little bit off the coast. You know why they do that. If the storm does get worse, they wont be able to move during it. So safety first. That is so important here. And people need to be vigilant just for another day here in florida. All right. This is what the storm looks like on the ground. I want to bring in noaa flight director richard who joins us from almost above me where the storm will be very shortly. Thank you so much for being with us. What will you be looking for this morning . Well, thank you, john. One of the really critical things that aircraft reconnaissance does is get a fix of exactly where the center is. And unfortunately i dont have good news in that the storm has continued to gain longitude. In other words, its moving west along with that northerly motion. Right now the movement is northwest at about 8 miles per hour. And if you look at the geometry of the coast and the geography, you can see that the more it heads to the west, the more and more unlikely it would be for it to turn sharply enough to miss the South Carolina coast. So thats the biggest concern right now is the direct landfall tomorrow in South Carolina. And right now based on the positions that weve been reporting, its more and more likely that thats going to happen. Another piece of bad news is that the storm continues to grow in size. Were looking at Hurricane Force winds extending now outward 60 miles from the center with Tropical Storm force winds out to 175 miles from the center. Its no longer a compact intense hurricane like it was when it was a cat 5. Its now a much broader storm. But the bad news for that is that the broader the storm is, the worse storm surge becomes an issue. Storm surge is more prone to large hurricanes. So the threat of a very, very severe storm surge alonging the South Carolina coast is growing larger at this point. Director henning, two key pieces of information you told us there. Number one, the storm is spreading in size which means its impact can be felt over a much broader area. Then the key bit of news is on a more westerly track than we would have all have hoped which means that a landfall in South Carolina is more likely. As the storm moves out over the open water of florida now, now that its moved past the bahamas, what do you see in terms of the strength of this storm . Well, right now its Holding Steady at about 963 millibars of pressure in the eye. It still got a very large circulation wrapping thunderstorms in towards the center. The core of the storm remains disorganized, but our concern and the concern of any forecaster at this point would be that its sitting over the gulf stream. So its over extraemly warm water. The problem with the storm yesterday and earlier was that it had stalled over the bahamas and was up in cooler water. That helped kill the intensity of the storm off from a cat 5 to a cat 2. Thats no longer the case. Its got plenty of warm water to work with. Water temperatures around 86 degrees underneath the eye of the storm. So there is concern that it could intensify some. Right now that is not the forecast from the hurricane center. They forecast its going to maintain this 105 mileperhour intensity up until landfall. But its always possible for it to regain some intensity with the waters being so warm. The key is if it gains some organization in the core, in that eye, if that eye wraps around completely and begins to shrink again, that will be a bad sign. All right. Richard henning flight director, 45,000 feet above us taking a look at this storm, thank you for that information. It will be key for all of us the next several days. Thank you so much, sir. Again, the fuse he just gave us from his vantage point, it looks like its taking a more westerly path. It means landfall more likely in South Carolina in the low lying areas. Well have much more on the path of Hurricane Dorian right after this. We trust usaa more than any other company out there. They give us excellent customer service, every time. John berman an Daytona Beach in florida as Hurricane Dorian moves up the florida coast bringing rain, strong winds, some storm surge. The storm has already wreaked havoc, caused so much devastation and despair in the bahamas where only now theyre getting a sense of how much damage was done. Joining me now by phone is niko gibson who runs a Medevac Company in the bahamas whos had a chance to get involved in some of the rescue and recovery operations. He just got back from exuma island. If you can hear me, tell me what you saw. . Hey, john. Hows it going . You know, everybodys definitely, you know, doing our best here trying to do what we can. The problem is the winds and the weather has really been a hazard for traffic to get in and out of abaco. U. S. Coast guard, everybody on that end has been doing an amazing job. The Defense Force and all of the government aides here that weve been trying to that weve been working with have been amazing as far as trying to get the helicopters in. The runways down there are totally still unusable other than the one airport located in the south. Were coordinating with the bahamas Civil Aviation and everybody there to get more supplies and get more people out. But the focus right now is just getting all the injured people that really needs to get out back to nassau. Theyve been doing that all day yesterday. Everybodys doing an amazing job. Were just doing what we can. They had an emergency meeting at the headquarters yesterday. I was able to connect with the Defense Force. Everybody is just doing an amazing job as far as coordinating efforts on the ground. Were still getting a lot of reports out of people that really need help as far as food, baby food, running out of waters in the shelters and all of that stuff. But this morning weve got about 50 airplanes on the ground now. So everybodys just waiting for that wind to die down. Yesterday visibility was a mess for airplanes to get in. Literally as soon as we get the all clear from the meteorology department, were going to start doing what we can on this end. Niko gibson, thank you very much for being with us. Good luck today. The need is enormous. I know theres frustration because so many of you want to be flying to the islands in need. Hopefully the weather clears enough today for you all to do it. Thanks for joining us. Thanks so much. All right. Were getting new updates on Hurricane Dorian as it moves up the florida coast. This morning Kamala Harris has just released her plan to fight the Climate Crisis. She aims to be Carbon Neutral by 2045. Five candidates have unveiled their plans ahead of cnns big town hall on this topic tonight. How do the plans stack up . Lets bring in bill weier. Great to see you. Great to see you. Seven hours on the Climate Crisis. Just take us behind the scenes. Why did cnn decide to do one topic with this . Because there was so much cryout from those voters who put this topic at the very top of their concern list. And many were calling for a dedicated climate debate with all ten on stage. The dnc didnt go for that for whatever reason. So were doing backtobacktoback town halls just focused on this. Look, im biased. I think we could do a town hall a day on this and it wouldnt be enough to cover it because its everything. Its everything in our lives from energy to politics to geopolitics to psychology to history. I will say as somebody who used to finish my term papers in the elevator on the way to class, i respect Kamala Harris coming down to the wire. Theres been a flurry of activity of candidates who right before the exam right before or handing in their paper. How do you expect viewers to be able to sift through all of this tonight . Is there a way for you to help them get a cheat sheet of who has the most interesting plan, most radical plan . What should people watch for tonight . You should watch for the only way to gauge it these days is people dont really relate to, you know, sort of changes, tweaks to the epa laws. They talk about dollars. Right . At the modest end of the scale, youve got president biden. His blueprint is about former vp. But you just promoted him. What did i say . You said president biden. Reappreciates that. Yes, the former vice president. Bernie sanders says i will see you ena raise almost 17 trillion. And he wants to basically, you know bernies plan is the most ambitious. Wants to de facto nationalize the power grid the way fdr did car makers in order to fight world war ii. And so a lot of people are sort of positioning themselves on that spectrum, right . Kamala harris, 10 trillion. Yesterday Elizabeth Warren said, hey, im going to take jay inslees plan who was the most comprehensive. The washington governor dropped out and said anybody can crowd source my material and its interesting that Elizabeth Warren was the first to take some of his ideas and add another trillion dollars to her plan. Then you got guys like mayor Pete Buttigieg who his town of south bend is just now working on a climate akction plan. He seems to be sort of thin on specifics so far. Well find out more tonight. Beto orourke was the first in with a climate plan. You know, as somebody watching him, it looks like hes putting all those chips on those voters who care about guns and the climate. And is it fair to say the most radical plan is andrew yangs . It is in keeping with the rest of his ideas. His platform, he wants to ensure everybody 1,000 a month, universal income. There are some estimates by the middle of the century, you know, hundreds of millions of people will have to move to higher ground. Is a thousand dollars a month going to cover that . Were going to get really into the details and see who inspires. Thank you very much for helping us preview all of that. Good to see you. What would you like to see done about the Climate Crisis . Ten democratic president ial candidates will take the stage on cnn tonight to discuss this very critical issue. That is starting at 5 00 p. M. Eastern so tune into that.
