We didnt agree much on anything. We got things done. 2020 democrats quickly seedsing on the former Vice President s comments, some calling on him to apologize. I think to be singing the praises of people who were vicious segregationists is not something that anybody should be doing. Its never okay to celebrate segregationists, never. To coddle the reputations of segregations, if they had their way, i would not be standing here. Its misinformed and wrong. Biden pushing back saying he was not praising eastland. Could not disagree with jim east land more. He was a segregationist. I ran for the United States senate because i disagreed with the views of the segregationists. The point i made is you dont have to agree. You dont have to like the people in terms of their views but you simply make the case and you beat them. Biden later lamenting the harsh start to the 2020 race saying at a fundraiser late last night, its going to be pretty ugly but heres the deal. Im not going to participate. Reporter christine and dave, despite facing criticism from some of his 2020 democratic rivals, joe biden is defending his recent comments about working with segregationists in an era that he said held mor more civility than current times. One of the 2020 rivals that has gone after biden on this and asked for an apology is cory booker. Take a listen to what he had to tell reporters outside of a fundraiser. Are you going to apologize . Apologize for what . Cory bookers called for it. Cory should apologize. He knows better. Theres not a racist bone in my body. Ive been involved in civil rights my whole career, period, period, period. Reporter now this marks a departure for joe biden who has retrained from engaging directly with his democratic opponents in this 2020 race. Last night cory booker also weighed in saying that hes not backing down, that he is not going to apologize. Take a listen to that. Somebody running to be the leader of our party should know that using the word boy in the way that he did can cause hurt and pain and we need a president ial nominee and a leader of our party to be sensitive to that. I know that i was raised to speak truth to power and i will never apologize for doing that and Vice President biden shouldnt need this lesson. Reporter youve heard from other 2020 democrats also criticizing joe biden, like Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren. Well see Going Forward whether the former Vice President chooses to change course or further address this. Meantime massachusetts senator eve lid bed warren. She is even with Bernie Sanders. What they cited was absolute immunity saying that she is not as a former white official high level white house official, she is not obligated to provide these kinds of answers to the committee. Some are calling on him to apologize. I think to be singing the praises of people who were vicious segregationists is not something that anybody should be doing. It is never okay to celebrate segregationists, never. To coddle the reputations of segregationists, of people who if they had their way i would literally not be standing here as a member of the United States senate is, i think its just its misinformed and its wrong. And youve heard from other 2020 democrats also criticizing joe biden like Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren. Well see Going Forward whether the former Vice President will change course or potentially address this further. Arlette, meantime, massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren is on the rise. A monmouth poll shows a five point bump putting her even with Bernie Sanders. You can see Kamala Harris down a bit. The cofounder of the centrist think tank third way telling cnns warrens proposals within the lines of democratic policies. They are not democratic socialist policies, theyre within the lines of a candidate who says she ease a capitalist. Bernie sanders tweeting the cat is out of the bag. The corporate wing of the Democratic Party is publicly anybody but bernie. Despite her recent success Elizabeth Warrens campaign plays down the polls telling cnn we dont pay much attention to the polls. They will go up and down. This is not a recipe for long term success. Former White House Communications director hope hicks spending seven hours in closed door testimony before the House Judiciary Committee but not answering any questions about her time in the west wing. White house lawyers claiming absolute immunity for hope hicks which has House Democrats fighting mad. We get more now from cnns manu raju on capitol hill. Reporter good morning, christine and dave. Hope hicks came and answer erred questions about the committees potential obstruction of justice. Democrats came away not satisfied because the white house counsels who were in the room made very clear that she would not be answering any questions about her time in the white house. What they cited was absolute immunity saying that she is not as a former white house official high level white house official, she is not on gated to provide these answers to the committee. Democrats now are threatening to take her to court. She answered some of our questions. Learned considerable information. The white house pleaded a nonexistent absolute immunity and that will not stand. She did answer questions in the Campaign Season including questions about what she knew about the hush money payments that came from the president was involved with that came from michael cohen, his former fixer who is now in jail. She wants to know about the hush money scheme. Nevertheless, this fight not over yet. Democrats not satisfied warning this could very well go to court in the coming days and jerry nadler says he will, quote, destroy the white houses case in court. Expect that litigation to happen sometime soon. Manu raju, thank you. The democrats inability to tell the story of the Mueller Report, will anything overcome that short of bob mueller actually testifying publicly before congress . Yeah, dave. This is about a tv spectacle the democrats need to put on to put the Mueller Report which is a 400 plus page document that is hard to read for a lot of people who dont have the time to delve into it. They need to put it on television. There is a lot of damning information and they have been blocked from testifying. The democrats have not been able to put this into a Television Free for all where they can make the case to the American People where the president was engaged in obstruction of justice and lying to people. All of the things were not seeing on tv and in the hearings. Democrats are having to slow walk things by going to the courts which can be a long and drawn out process. Turn it into a television spectacle that people can digest by watching on tv and hearing directly from the people who are involved or who watch the president do things that are untoward. To hear it, to see it, and make it real and concrete. Lets talk about the 2020 field. Joe biden, the leader of that democratic field. His vast experience being sort of used well, clumsily hes using his own experience against himself making it seem like hes a little bit out of touch. His remarks about a southern segregationist and being able to work with him. This is what james cleiburn said. You dont have to agree with people to work with them. Coming to the rescue of joe biden. Heres what lindsey graham, whos on the other side of the aisle, heres what he said. If that becomes the norm. Then its over. Joe biden did nothing wrong with a duly elected senator from a state from a past that we now try to move on from. Did this ding senator biden as being out of touch or did he move out of here . Hes having trouble finding a way in the modern Democratic Party being ascended. He went after senator booker. This is an unforced error by joe biden. Someone with a long track record and he has to defend his long history in the senate. At the same time he has to show that he can compete in the modern Democratic Party. Clay burn hosts his fish fry where biden and most of the 2020 field will attend. Expect that to be an issue. Speaking of the 2020 field. Joe biden continues to lead this field and by a considerable margin. The difference here in this one is the rise of Elizabeth Warren ahead of Bernie Sanders though still you can see very, very close her rise. Who is it at the expense of . Is she taking away from Bernie Sanders, is it more Kamala Harris . How do you account for it . It does appear she is taking some of the fire from Bernie Sanders. Shes taking a little bit from pete buttigieg. Shes been able to put out a number of plans and thats given her the attention shes needed to rise in the polls. It appears shes tonge do that because shes worked so far. Very focused on policy. Shes got a plan for that. She does. In her stump speech. Ahead, tensions rising between the u. S. And iran. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum chinas president xi jinping holding talks with north Korean Leader kim jongun. Its the first trip by a chinese president to north korea in more than a decade. It comes as both leaders are locked in stalled disputes with the United States. Paula hancocks is live for us in seoul. Could this meeting be intended to help each other gain leverage with President Trump . Reporter well, dave, this meeting has been a longtime in the making. It really does feel overdue to many people. It was 15 months ago that kim jongun first went to china and said to xi jinping, please come to pyongyang. He said yes at that point. Certainly the timing is interesting. The fact that hes left it until a week before he goes to the g20 in japan and is expected to meet with u. S. President donald trump. China has been at pains to say that the trade dispute with the u. S. Is very different to the north korean issue and they are dealing with them as separate issues, but clearly its not going to harm xi jinping to be seen in pyongyang right now, just a week before meeting with President Trump showing that he is pivotal to the north korean issue, that he is critical to some kind of resolution on the peninsula. Then from kim jonguns issue, he is in stalled discussions on denuclearization. It doesnt hurt him to show that he has a very powerful friend in xi jinping. We know there will be plenty of pomp and circumstance. They have already met as well and spoken to each other. There was a very dramatic welcome at the airport. About 10,000 people, according to peoples daily saying there was a 21gun salute, military band, flags and flowers and they got into an open top car and drove through the streets of pyongyang. The streets thronged and chanding and cheering. We are looking forward to seeing that. Paula hancocks, thank you. Miracle on the hudson captain sharing concerns about the 737 max planes. He said he had problems in a simulator recreation of the doomed flights. Im one of a relatively small group of people who have experienced such a crisis and lived to share what we learned about it. Sullenberger said pilots need physical firsthand experience to be prepared for emergencies and ipad training is not even close to enough. Sullenberger landed a u. S. Airways flight, remember, on the hudson river in 2009 saving the lives of all 155 people on board.
