Vulnerable and i truly believe we will heal the land and be able to reopen america and put this great nation back to work. Thank you. Mr. President all right, well, thats a surprise. After the Vice President speaks, after head of the fda speaks, president makes brief opening comments. They simply walk out and refuse to answer questions, presumeabl as the president knew he was about to be bomb darded bombard bombarded by serious questions, and a lie, to ingest serious questions. If you look at the videotape, and those of us covering it yesterday, know he was being very, very serious. Gloria, clearly the president was afraid of the serious questions he was about to be asked by the journalists there at the briefing. The first time he refused to answer questions. He is probably afraid to do so. When he did answer a question earlier today and he lied and said he was being sarcastic about what he said about disinfectant in your body and light in your body being able to somehow cure coronavirus, when he suggested that, he got himself in a lot of trouble. He knew he was going to be asked about it again, and he doesnt like being asked tough questions. So what i would raise here, well, if the president is just going to read something that someone wrote for him an hour ago and pick it up and read it, then perhaps the coronavirus briefings should be going back to the people who are the scientists and mike pence who runs the Coronavirus Task force and who is on the Conference Calls with the governor, and perhaps that is the way they ought to be rather than having the president at the podium dispensing rumor and false scientific information. I went to bring in jim acosta. Has that ever happened before . The president comes in the Briefing Room. Supposed to be a news conference. He is supposed to answer questions and simply walks out. By the way, dr. Fauci was not there today. Dr. Birx was not there today. They simply refused to answer reporter questions. It was very, very awkward. It was very awkward, wolf. I dont think we have seen anything from the president in the coronavirus pandemic. He has appeared in the Briefing Room from time to time and ducked out again. Mu this is a whole different kind of experience, wolf, and youre right on the money on this. This a president who is feeling the heat big time after he made that outlandish, ridiculous comment yesterday that people can inject themselves with disinfectants to cure the coronavirus, and said said it was csarcasm. I will tell you, wolf, just a couple things, i think the fact that dr. Fauci and dr. Birx were not in the briefing today is important. And my colleague kevin and i have been report aring on this, the president has been making life difficult for the medical experts on the Coronavirus Task force. I can tell and you kevin can say from talking to sources that some of the experts on the task force are very reluctant to disagree with the p president on camera. And some of this dynamic goes to the the extent that they do not want to stand off. They dont want the camera to pick up the expressions on their face when the president is making these comments and you saw what the president said, he was talking about sunlight therapist, the camera, the cut away camera was zooming in on dr. Birx to get her reaction. The experts on the task force are highly aware of the cameras and they are very concerned about their expressions picked up. They dont want to be seen disagreer agreeing or laughing at the president when he makes the claims and what you end up w the public is relying on, cant really give the American People the truth because theyre worried about the president lashing at out them or making a scene that has to be cleaned up later, and may just be better off for everything that the per press conference. Despite the fact we would like to pepper the president with questions, he cant take the opportunity to put out a lot of the junk science and poppycock ideases that will not stand up. Postally, only about 20 minutes that the president was there. And most of that, dr. Hahn wases speaking of the Vice President was speaking. The president made a five minute opening statement. As gloria points out, he simply read sanjay gupta is with us. Its extraordinary. Yesterday, the briefings go aban hour, an hour and a half, two hours, and this is 20 minutes. The president said injecting disinfectant in your body might be a cure for coronavirus. And today, the centers of Disease Control put out a statement. House hold cleaners and disinfectants can cause problems when not used properly. Follow the instructions to ensure safe use. And every one, it says external use only. You dont have to be a brilliant scientist or doctor to know, you just use it on your hand. The cdc had to issue a statement, telling the American People, dont inject it in your body. They were worried enough about this, that people might misinterpret and hear the comments made by the president and not walk back been his scientific experts and do something that is dangerous to himself. That is why the cdc did that. And manufacturers put out statements today. Its one of the things that most people knew in the bucket of kmo common sense. Kids knew that. But nevertheless, here we are, having a conversation about this, and there is really important stuff going on in the story, the drug trials, vaccine trials, new developments. I will say in the past 24 hours, around the shenanigan, there was with the fda saying to slow down the role of hydroxychloroquine with the fda saying we are going to start trialing it and make it off label use for physicians to use as they see appropriate. Now the fda is saying we will continue the clinical trails and saying there is not effectiveness, and the antibody kits. A lot of tests have come out on the mark. Understandably, there is a rush to get the tests out there to improve testing overall for the virus and for antibodies. But many, wolf, were not validated. They were not showing accuracy that was high enough to give people confidence in the results. You heard the fda commissioner talk about how they were going to improve the validation around the tests. So significant things going on. But not overwhelmingly good news. Still a lot of work to be done. And extraordinary. The cdc has to issue a statement, trying to clean up what the president said, the disinsf disinfectants, and the food and Drug Administration saying the drug the president has touted, for weeks, hiydroxychloroquine s potentially dangerous. The fda is aware of reports of serious heart rhythm problems with patients with covid19 treated with hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine in combination of other prolonging of medicines. We would like to remind professionals of patients and the known risks, and hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have not been shown to be safe and e effective and patients who have also had other Health Issues such as heart and Kidney Disease are likely to be at increased risk with heart problemses with receiving these medicines in. That is another slap at the president of the united states, what he and some of his supporters have been touting as a treasure trove of hydroxychloroquine. Its too bad. We need to have an effective medicine. Everyone wants that, you want that, i want that. Had everyone on the planet wants that. Its terrible news always. Not good news when the trails dont work. There are many trails on all sorts of different potential medicines. The hydroxychloroquine has gotten a lot of attention, there is a drum beat news, and early studies, i will add, small studies but they are not promising at all, wolf, in terms of showing effectiveness, some of them have shown harm as you pointed out. Why the fda is making a statement. A study that came out of france that showed in higher doses, it can show heart rhythm abnormality. Its a concern. And last night, we asked Governor Cuomo about it and many of the doses purchased went to the state of new york and given in new york at five different hospitals as part of a Clinical Trial. Were going to await the results there, and e we asked what the early results show. And he said basically, the headline showed they did not seem to be any more e effective in treating the Covid Infection versus a placebo, taking no medication at all. That is not good news. We want a successful therapeutic, regardless of who is supporting it or endorsing it, whatever. But so far, the hydroxychloroquine is not the one. So far, it doesnt look promising. We will see what the other drug works out, trialing involves that and other drogs as well. Daniel dale, youre a fact checker and normally we come to you after a briefing like this. Most of the briefing that dr. The president said he was having sar fastic, and that is a lie. It was a lie in go ways. The president said he was sarcastic. He plainly was not, and he was addressing the question to reporters and he had been addressing dr. Birx and the director of Homeland Security who was present. If the president is the willing to lie to americans about something we saw on sca camera, and the russia, if youre listening comment. And in 2019, he started to say that had been in a joke. That he was at an arena, a rally, and he was on camera, he was plainly serious. With this president , we get serial lying and brazen, about stuff that we can tell is not true with our own lies. This is the first time, a 22minute briefing, the first time a president has been afraid to answer questions from reporters. Reporters there, sitting in the white house Briefing Room. That is their job to ask serious and tough questions. The president , shall we say, was chicken. Didnt want to ask questions. We will have a lot more on the breaking news. Stick around, youre in the situation room. Well be right back. State farm is announcing the Good NeighborRelief Program were returning 2 billion dollars to our auto policyholders through may 31st. We are following the backlash from President Trumps thought that disinfectant the can be consumed or injected. He cut short a White House Briefing refusing to take questions at all from journalists, despite earlier in the day to act as he never said what we heard him say on Live Television 24 hours ago, the president falsely claiming he was simply trying to be sarcast sarcastic yesterday. But the centers of Disease Control warning all americans to use disinfectants properly. Lets get the latest on the coronavirus here in the united states. Some states are beginning to reopen. More in los angeles for us. More people in dying in california where you are, and all across the united states. More than 50,000 americans have died over the last seven or eight weeks toll. Total. It is absolutely a grim marker and we are seeing Something Else tonight. We are seeing states, on a push pull. Open, dont open. We are not seeing movement here in california right now. That is certainly not the case in other states across the country. As the u. S. Death toll tops 50,000 lives lost, some businesses reopen on, donning masks, barbershops are back. Defying Public Health warnings, georgia and oklahoma opening up salons. In texas, curb side retail is open. I walk out to the trunk. Thank you so much for your purchase for helping us. The south to midwest to alaska. A real time experiment of the virus vess state policy. Department stores open with restrictions. Wisconsin, golf courses and some retail open curb side. Alaska, restaurants an i lowed to open to a quarter capacity. Tennessee will be allowing restaurants to open at half capacity monday, saying its time. The approach to rebooting the economy must be steady, methodical, and doesnt jeopardize all the strides we maid so far. Other local leaders say that is exactly what governors are doing acting now. This is a premature and reckless decision on e behalf of the governor. We know the risks are great and we expect to see another spike. The white house, a reinvents of yesterday. President trump saw now says he was being sarcastic, the public consider injecting disinfectant. But the makers of lysol issue a warning, under know circumstance should our projukts be in the human body in injection, ingestion or any other route. The country must learn the testing continuing to be inadequate. What is the lesson . An outbreak fwli is an outbreak everywhere. That is why michigans governor is extending the stay at home order for their state until may 15th. Right now, isolated as we feel, and as stressed as we are about getting back to work, reopening up businesses, we know if we do it too fast, a second wave is likely and would be even more devastating. In los angeles, california, a grim announcement. That highlights the toll of the virus. Another dark threshold that we crossed is that covid19 is now the leading kous of death here. Deaths are doubling here in los angeles still. Across the county and hospitals, we continue to be resilient and strong. So given numbers, given the amount of fear there is out here in the communities regardless of the state youre in, cnn was across the state of georgia as the state reopened and we actually found a lot of businesses couldnt get enough bleach wipes, couldnt get the bleach and the cost was too much. We did find hair salons open, bowling alleys open as well. Good reporting. Thank you very much. Joining us, mayors from two states moving forward with reopening plans today. John is the mayor of brooke haven, georgia, and dave is the mayor of Oklahoma City, oklahoma. Thanks so much for joining us. Lets start with you. The president , as you probably saw, walked out of tonights briefing without answering any questions from reporter es about his suggestion the by before that people may benefit from injecting things to crete coronavirus. Do you worry about the impact the claims could have on your community . I thank you, wolf, so much for having me. Of course im very wor rired about the kind of issues in those the fact of having been told one thing one down and told something another day, it causes a lot of confusion, and obviously drinking clorox is very, very dangerous. Im shocked that the National Interview is my first line is i have to remind people not to drink clorox. Im shocked i have to ask a question like that. And given the mixed messages we are hearing from the president , the Public Health officials, where are you turning for critically Public Health advice as you try to fight this pandemic. We have a fantastic Oklahoma City county Health Department here. I turned to the officials and the state level, and honestly, the white house gouidelines fro dr. Fauci and his team have been useful. We closed bars and restaurants and with gyms. We had shelter in place when the white house proposed. When its thought out and presented as a unified plan from dr. Fauci, we have found it to be useful and we are looking at the white house criteria. He is a national pressure, dr. Fauci. I was disappointed he wasnt there today, yesterday. We rely on him for his exper size. At the direction of your governor, residents in georgia can now visit salons, gyms. What you are bracing for . A spike potentially, god forbid, what so many Health Officials are warning is premature reopening . That is my concern. With the aggressive reopening, that we could have a spike, which actually ends up hurting the economy. And because we have the spike, businesses close down, and people dont go out. And use the businesses, and it actually you know, to its a false start. And then will require people to hold backing again and when its time to go, will be, you know, a lot less able to do so. Or fearful if they do so. I agree with mayor holt. When the good lines, when presented unifie kbli are very are, very effective and a way to move forward. And unfortunately in georgia, the gov nofr has not followed those guidelines, which is causing a lot of concerns. We are told by the mayor of atlanta and other mayors, he cant consult with any of the mayors before issuing his new decision. In oklahoma, a great state as all of us know, personal Health Care Businesses reopened today despite warnings. Your citys shelters in place does remain in e effect until the end of the month. Would you prefer the governor wait longer to begin to reopen the economy . We strongly felt that nothing should can considered until may 1st. Personal care is not opening today. We just left the shelter in place in place as it the way with was through the month of april. My gut says may 1st is too early. That is when it opens here in oklahoma. And it put us in a tough position. Im only the mayor of half the people in my metro area. If you have a patch work of regulations that are not statewide or regional, it doesnt serve a purpose to do things differently than all the others. We made it a very tough decision, we will try to align with the state. And with very mixed emotions that we do that. Because we are very concerned. I recognize we cannot shelter in place for two years but we are trying to find the right date. I gave a press Conference Today to the people of october city. The virus doesnt know its may 1st. We have to stay on task. We have been successful in Oklahoma City and we have keep the same mentality in place and we have cotonight to save lives. I was there 25 years ago to cover the bombing of the federal office building. My heart goes out to the family and friends of the People Killed in that attack. Thanks, wolf. Good luck to both of you. Just ahead we e he will talk more about whether to its safe for some states to be reopened no n nonessential businesses. For many of our members, being prepared. Wont be a new thing. Simple, easy, awesome. [ barking ] joining us now here in the situation room is the president of the american medical association, dr. Patrice harris. We just saw the president refuse take questions after making dangerous assertions yesterday about potentially ingesting disinfe disinfectant. Why continue the president simply say i was wrong yesterday and i apologize . Well, i certainly cant speak to why the president said or doesnt say certain statements. But it is unbelievable where we are today. That all the Health Experts are telling people not to ingest or inject disinfectants, and that is why, wolf, it is so important to have the Public Health experts out front giving the message, giving us the facts, letting American Public know what we know and what we dont know, and certainly the exp expertise should be free. You saw the commissioner ther, they all have so come out today and try to clean up some of the president s comments. But its the president who has the loudest and most important voice in all this. What kind of health risk to have the messages coming from the administration . Well, words do matter. And we know that its important to get Accurate Information out to the public, as i said before. I spent the first two weeks of this pandemic dispelling myths and rumors out there. So its very dangerous. One of the early rumors for me, is that afternoon conditiricant the be infected with the coronavirus. Its important to get the information out there. No matter who is giving information. But its more important that Public Health officials, physicians, scientists, give us the information. That is where we should begin and end, so that everyone knows and science and the evidence are priority and not politics. The fda had to issue a formal public warning today about hydroxychloroquine, a drug the president has painted as a possible cure. How hard is it to get the right information to the American People when the president is putting out information that potentially, at least according to the food and Drug Administration, is deadly. Well, wolf, medical e professionals actually do read our medical journals and we do read the latest scientific ever e den evidence and follow all the studies. We should always rely on science and the evidence. The medications. We want there to be controlled trials, Peer Reviewed literature. And that is where the information should come from. Not the from e elected officials. Obviously, the president s public advisers are in a very, very difficult position. What advice do you give dr. Fauci, dr. Birx, they have to walk a thin line. They should and have to continue to to rely on the evident and make sure that the public receives Accurate Information that is based on data. If you have one message for the president tonight, what would that be . I would say to any elected official, in an address i gave a couple weeks a guy, please let science and the evidence hold the day and let us make the decisions about covid 1. This is a Public Health crisis, and it requires a Public Health focus. Dr. Harris, thanks for joining us. Youre welcome. Thanks. [ piano playing ] were tracking all the late breaking developments in the coronavirus pandemic, but i want to bring in our chief medical correspondent, dr. Gupta. Hes back to answer some your questions about the virus. Weve been getting a lot of questions on this, for example. Its important to address, i testeded positive for antibodies. Does that mean im most likely now immune . I think the best answer to that question, wolf, is presumably you are immune. We dont, we dont know for sure. This is a novel coronavirus. The reason i say presumably is because if you look at other infections inclueing other coronavirus infections, people do develop antibodies and thus immunity for some time. Others like sars or mers which are both coronaviruses, you had immunity for several months if not a couple of years, so we have to make sure with this coronavirus, but you should. Well figure out that soon im sure. Im sure we will. Heres another question. Should i donate blood if i had coronavirus . Yes. This is a good question. So it kind of builds on the first question. We still want to prove that the antibod can d an antibodies that you build during infection are going to be protective, but the idea is that if youve had the infection, you have antibodies. If you donate, you help protect others. Dr. Haun said one person could donate to four others. Yes, check with your doctor, your blood bank, but this might be a good option. Heres another question we got. My doctor prescribed hydroxychloroquine to treat me. Should i still take it in light of the nda warning. Yeah, i would be careful on this. I might want to check with krour doctor again. The information does change and evolve. Especially with a fast moving you know new coronavirus like this. Heres the things to keep in mind. There can be significant side effects. You know we were suspicious of that for some time, but thousand thats sort of panned out in these warnings and what the fda is saying is that if youre not part of a Clinical Trial or in a hospital setting, you shouldnt be taking this. So taking it as an outpatient, at your home, thats not a good idea. Check with your doctor first. Dont stop it without talking to your doctor, but thats the guidance were hearing from the fda. Heres a common question we keep getting. Anxious to get your answer. What are the risks of getting a haircut if everyone wears masks and gloves . So if its a good question. Very hard to physically distance yourself when youre getting a haircut so then you say youre wearing a mask, the other person is wearing a mask. If its an n95 mask, thats going to be r more protective. The problem is, youre entering an environment when you go in there thats to have a lot of unknowns where as the other person in front of you, did they have the virus . Is the surface youre touching going to be contaminated . Thats the risky part here. Are other people in the barbershop also potentially harboring the virus. So, yes, wearing a mask would decrease your like lihood of spreading virus yourself if youre wearing an n95 mask, the airtig airtight, fitted mask, youre going reduce your risk of contracting the virus, but its a risk. Its a risk. Right now, everything is a risk reward proposition. How do you determine that . Is it worth getting a a haircut and potentially exposing yourself to the virus . Then harboring that virus in your body, taking it home, potentially exposing others. Thats why we say only essential businesses should be open now. Now is a good time, maybe lynn will do this, but i got a little help cutting my hair and i think it turned out okay. I think its all right. You look good. Im going to let mine grow for a while.
