First Lady Jill Biden speaks to the National Governors association about workforce training programs, the first lady was introduced by hatcher new jersey governor bill murphy. [applause] im going to be very brief. Doctor joe biden. Andd from milton county, we like in law states. We have had the great honor for many years, we go way back third senator, the third senator and campaigning to talk about this important topic and Workforce Development every single time and he was second lady and her jaw was on the ground so an incredible honor to introduce youwh first lady of the United States of america, doctor jill biden. [applause]s ive been in politics 46 years and i know this is what you want after lunch so i know i will read it up, i know your board is checking it out, what he didnt tell you is yes, i was born in new jersey on a weekend because my grandparents lived there my parents went there for the weekend but i used to come every single weekend of my childhood until i was a teen and when i grew up, i got money for college and worked over ocean city new jersey and thats how i got money so i feel this is home and i asked if they could get jersey tomatoes, she cant do that so its second best. Anyway, thank you, phil. Im so grateful to you new jersey, the great partner. Your leadership of this organization and i know joe is grateful for everything that both of you have done and how much work you put into this. Congratulate the incoming chairs and vice chairs, governor tax and abbey as they embark on their successful tenure. We have already started so we are traveling arw lot and want o think the entire leadership so i enjoyed hosting you at the white house getting to know many of you and your spouses but i know before that happens, it will be a lot. How about tom perez . Thank you for being here. Congratulations. [laughter] okay. You can roll the teleprompter. [laughter] anyway, i want to talk about how we come together to build an economy with good paying american jobs and something we can all agree on so when i was growing up, success meant one thing. Getting a four yearng degree, im sure the same for most of you but i teach in the Community College outside of washington d. C. And while some of my students are working toward their bachelor degree, that campus is right for all of them and you probably know this from your own state, if joe understands High School Diploma alone isnt enough to find a great career but that doesnt mean theres only one path to success so students and i love this part, students can enroll in high school, many of you have a senior state, College Courses and then enroll in apprenticeship and training and growing industries, great jobs with the associate history so through the Biden Administration investing in america growing Industries Like clean energy and manufacturing. And doesnt require four years of college. So free schools because i dont care, we have to get them educated. The High School Experience that prepares students for their next steps so provides for two years of affordable Community College and opened up a two or four year degree. If thats what you want. So its. Is by economics. From the bottom up and middle out and thats what he campaigned on and what he said he would do. It may feel we find common ground, these efforts can bring americans together. How many of you touch the program in your own states. Inog colorado, i talked with ste legislators on both sides of the aisle that would provide free and reduced cost job training for in demand careers and governor signs those bills and made. Shes going to graduate into a field where workers could make nearlyna 100,000 a year. So i had to think about doing it myselflf because, hey, thats me than im making. Right here in new jersey and in new york, you know, the governors here are working with the federal Transit Administration to put billions towards gateway hudson river tunnel project. So this is going to change lives forth hundreds of thousands of people who need the tunnel to commune commute as well as thousands of skilled workers who will be a part of this project. Thank you, phil and cathy. Thank you. Preparing the work force is bigger than a blue issue or red issue. I dont know. I just saw all of you in late indian and a couple times ive seen you here again. You all seem to get along so well. I cant imagine theres differences. I mean, there are things that we canv agree on and you understad that education is about the economy. And we want to work with you to get more done. I want to ask you all to keep going and thanks to the bipartisan infrastructure law, the u. S. Department of transportation recently made it possible to use highway funds to train people for jobs. It all seems to make sense and im urging you to follow michigan and wisconsin and marylands lead and put that money to work. Whether thats creating registered apprenticeship or providing child care, Emergency Assistance for students in Community College programs. Im now standing here on the stage and we have to find innovative ways to connect to students and employers so that every stunt in every community have the path thats works for them. We stop going about work forcefi hubs initiatives. I dont know how they come up with that name. Were in phoenix, columbus, baltimore, pittsburgh and augusta and theyve received significant investments from legislation like the bipartisan infrastructure law as well as private companies. In these cities, the Biden Harris Administration is partnering with, you know, all of you local officials and employers, unions, Community Colleges, high schools and other partners to ensure that we have a skilled work force that can meets, the demand for labor created investments. These efforts are not going to only strengthen these five cities. Yesterday i visited the Work Force Hub in columbus, ohio, and the energy and enthusiasm there werere unmistakable and theyre creating new path ways to local jobs that will change peoples lives. Joes father used to say and i agree with this, a job is a lot more about a lot more than a paycheck. Its about your dignity. I see this within my own students and joe watched his dad struggle to find good work. Thats how his dad actually ended up in wilmington and no jobs in scranton. Did i say that right . Scranton. Know how many times a week i hear that word. He saw he saw how it could change a familys path. My dad came from a family of italian immigrants. Thanks to the gi bill and my dad was able to get a degree and carve out a good life for my sisters and for me. Joe understands the middle class because were from the middle class andbo working to build the economy from like i said, the middle out and the bottom up. But he knows that, you know, he can only do thisrk with you and you know this too. Our governors are our partners and together as we really fundamentally transform what it means to make a living and make a life here in america. So thanks for being a great audience. You should be out on the beach in your bathing suits and i appreciate you sitting here and i look forward to seeing all of you in your home states, thanks for listening. Prone applause ].
