Over 4,000 tons a day keep intense fires burning in each of the four huge furnaces at the east lake plant. Almost instantly, the heat turns the purified water in the boiler tubes into steam. Which is directed goodness the blades of a turbine at tremendous pressure. So notice turbine room steam becomes mechanical energy. Turning the shaft of this giant turbine at 60 revolutions per second. 3600 per minute. Turbine and generator are whirling on the same shaft thus mechanical energy is converted into electric energy by the generator. Out it goes to the transformers where the voltage is stepped up from 18,000 volts to 132,000 volts for economical transmission. Instantaneously its on its way to the takeoff structure. Its then routed to a step down transmission substation where the voltage is reduced to 11,000 or 33,000 volts. Electricity is delivered to some industrial plants at this voltage. The rest of the power supply goes to the neighborhood distribution substations where its reduced to 4,600 volts.
