Cenk back on the young turks where tomorrow were going to look a this interesting case with senator bob menendez the escort who said she was hired by menendez and she lied about all the testimony. Tomorrow also ill be on the war room. Stay tune for viewpoint. You. John so with the 2014 president ial race be between jeb bush and Hillary Clinton . I dont know im just glad our forefathers had that whole war to get away from inherited power. And hes back from north korea. Dennis rodman is done sucking up to a buffoonish leader and hes going on donald trump. And mitt and ann romney are back to remind you that the media covered whether president obama was even born here was in the tank for president obama. And today is the 100th anniversary of the u. S. Department of labor. Happyhappy birthday. And its the birthday of chaz bono, Everybody Loves chaz bono, and rick perry. This is viewpoint. [ theme music ] john good evening, im john fugelsang, and this is viewpoint. While most of the political world indulged in its latest spectator sport, blaming each other over the the sequester president obama named three nominees to the cap innocent post. Energy, office of management and budget. Leaving the blame game to the White House Press secretary jay carney. It is unfortunate, again its a wholly unnecessary decision made by republicans to allow this to happen. John of course if you listened to speaker of the house john boehner you would know that the 85 billion that the sequesters removed from the economy this year is all the democrats fault especially, mr. Obamas. Weve known about this for 16 months. And yet even today theres no plan from Senate Democrats or the white house to replace the sequester. Thats just not true. They made it very clear as the president just did that he has a plan that he has put forward that involves entitlement cuts, spending cuts that you made a choice as have republicans to leave tax loopholes in place and youd rather have those than live with all these arbitrary cuts. Thats just nonsense. If he had a plan why wouldnt Senate Democrats go ahead and pass it. John that plan exists on the white house website right now. Well have more on David Gregorys experimenting with followup questions on tonights fbomb. You dont want to miss it. As for why the Senate Democrats wouldnt go ahead and pass the president s plan, that might have as much of the republicans use of the filibuster to force a 60vote super majority on any issue beyond naming rights for post offices. Meanwhile Gene Sperling director of National Economic council or as bob woodward calls hick, the scary sith lord, says the president spent the weekend reaching out to lawmakers on both sides of the ail on the sequester. Hes making those calls to see where there might be a coalition of the big, a caucus for common sense. It makes no sense to sit back and watch communities that depend on military spending, it makes no sense to see us lose 750,000 jobs when we could come together in bipartisan bipartisan comprise. John but it makes sense for republicans primaried to the right to cost hundreds of thousands of jobs. Mitt romney told fox news that he doesnt think its working. That causes the republicans to trench and fight back. Thats a natural human emotion. John and who would understand natural Human Emotions better than mitt romney. Joining me now is robert reich author of beyond outrage what has gone wrong with our economy and how to fix it. Good evening. Hello. John you published a blog post of what the president do now. Now that the sequester has taken affect what should obama do. Instead of continuing the blame game, i think the president has an argument in that blame game but have the Senate Democrats move useing a procedure called reconciliation, needing 51 votes using that to repeal the sequester and leave it up to the republicans oh to say we support the sequester. We want the sequester because the democrats dont want it. And the democrats have moved and the majority in the senate has actually moved to get rid of the sequester. Then i think what the president ought to do is make it very clear to the American People that 2014 is a referendum on whether they want a continued essentially a ransom demanded by House Republicans Tea Party Republicans over a whole set of issues having to do with from medicare to Social Security to the future of this country to investments, education job training infrastructure, Everything Else we need in terms of building the future economy. John of course, reconciliation was used to pass the Affordable Care act but i have a question about it regarding sequester appeal. Wouldnt that still have to be approved by the Republican House . Wouldnt this be just a theatrical gesture . Its all theater right now but its not a theatrical gesture because it puts the responsibility squarely on the republicans. Instead of the republicans saying theyre to blame for the sequester. Once the democrats show that they have enough votes in the senate to repeal the sequester then it moves to the house. What are the republicans going to do . They cant continue to say were not responsible for this continued sequester. Then they are responsible for their sequester. John its a brilliant idea, but i dont see it happening. What is holding this white house back from taking positive action on this . It wins on p. R. And winning american workers. I think the white house is worried that the republicans would bang them over the head as being fiscalcally irresponsible. I think much of the country is not there at all. Much of the country is very receptive to what was the major argument during the campaign that the president made over and over again that is the jobs and wages and widening equality. Those are the real challenges ahead. Not the budget deficit. Its down 5 of gdp right now. Thats what it was when bill clinton came to office. We have a problem with the budget deficit thats true, but thats mainly because of rising healthcare costs and aging baby boomers. The way to deal with that is not to shave the government back. The way you deal with that is get control over healthcare costs. Have a single pair, a public option under the new Affordable Care act. But you dont do that by holding the country up, by slowing economic growth, which is exactly what the sequestration is doing. John well, you said you wanted the president to reframe the whole debate around the countrys future rather than the austerity that g. O. P. Favors. Now republicans are campaigning against him on the issue rather than trying to meet him halfway. You and i know that is a load of nonsense. What more can the president do . I think the president ought to take austerity economics on directly. Look at what has happen happened in europe. You have high unemployment. What does england do, spain they began cutting when consumers were already pulling back. When you do that, you shrink the economy. When you shrink the economy you have fewer revenues, then the ratio of the debt to the economy gets worse and worse. That is the downward spiral that a lot of europe is in. Its not greece. Greece is a separate case. A lot of europe is in that downward spiral because of austerity economics. The president ought to say the republicans stand for two principles that dont work, austerity economics, and trickle down economics, and we know why innocent doe work. John its amazing considering our g. O. P. Friends made pro growth their mantra out of the frank luntz machine. Theyre being antigrowth. A number of commentators including republicans said the g. O. P. Cant give grounds to the president on taxes because their identity as the antitax party is all that is oh holding them together any more. Do you think thats right sir . Do we see two more years of this . Thats exactly right. Thats the only thing they have. Otherwise, youve got the religious right in battle with republicans who have the tea partiesers who want to go in one direction shrinking government, and then deficit hawks. Youve got republicans all over the place. They dont know what to do. The only thing that is holding they will together right now is hating taxes. The problem for them when the public begins to understand that what is really happening is that republicans are saying no taxes on the rich. No closing of any loopholes at all. Mitt romneyshis special privileges with regard to private equity and all of the other privileges that the rich have, we want to protect and we want to protect even at the expense of schools and roads and bridges and women and infants and children programs and Everything Else the public needs, inspectors, we are the Republican Party will have to admit they are not the partythe antitax problem party. They are the party of the wealthy and the privileged in this country. And i think that theyyou know, that its indisputable. They will not be able to hide behind the curtain. John robert reich professor, happy 100th birthday to the labor department. Thank you john. John services are starting to get cut not to mention the u. S. Military. But egypt, a funds just happen to be on the way. Secretary of state john kerry told Mohamed Morsi reported that they would be accepting help in return he receive assurances for political reforms. He continued his mideast tour on iran. He told gulf ministers and Saudi Crown Prince the way to reach a peaceful agreement would not be open indefinitely. He told the Public Affairs committee that president obama was not kidding when he threatened military action if that window closed. Big nations and president s of the United States cannot and do not bluff, and president barack obama is not bluffing. He is not bluffing. John not speaking at apac today, chuck hagel. Im joining by joel ruben director of policy and policy affairs. Joel welcome back to the show. Great to be here. John why is the u. S. Giving the morsi government a quarter of a billion dollars this week. What are the countrys extreme needs, and why should american taxpayers pay to fix them during sequester mania. This is meant to show strength and american strength and connection to the countys in the arab world who are undergoing tremendous change and are in the midst of violence and political turmoil. Egypt is the cornerstone country in the region for american interest, and kerry is making it clear that the u. S. Stands with egypt and changes taking place but this money was appropriated and authorized a year ago is now being released. It was held some time by congress we lated to questions related to egypts future and politics there. But it is a worthwhile investment. Its the kind of money that if were going to use money in foreign aid this is where we should be putting it, to make sure we have a relationship with this new government that does meet the needs of the country. John and anybody who cares about egypts long term strength and stability should care very deeply about the strength of our relationship with egypt. We really have a relationship with the cornerstone country for israel ensuring that israels southern board is secure. They signed a peace treaty more than three decades ago. Part of that was to make sure that the u. S. And egypt were tight, and the security relationship we have with egypt does secure israel that they will not have another middle east war. Theyve had several with egypt in the past but not since the treaty, and its key. John its great to see capitalism helping to bring peace to the region, but is a quid pro quo from morsis government on aid and reforms of any real value . Egyptians are supposed to vote next month and some opposition groups say theyre going to boycott the polls because of interference from morsi and the muslim he brotherhood. The economic and political conditions of the country that the egyptian people have been suffering from, we need to make sure when we communicate, and this was communicated, whenever we communicate with egypt as a government, were including all the people of egypt. There is a deep need for a change in the way they governor their country and there are concerns being expressed by the egyptian protesters out two years in cairo as well as the activist groups who. We need to make sure that theyre treating all of their people in the right way. John what is secretary john kerry trying to accomplish on this his first mideast tour. Is this about advancing the president s trip this month or the bigger regional issues, what is going on in syria iran and what is going on in israel. Israel. John kerry is a Global Presence, and he has been for years. Hes using his role as secretary of state to show that there is a Global Presence in control of the state department. Hes certainly laying the groundwork for the president who will be in israel later in month, and hell meet with the palestinians and jordannens. But kerry is looking at broader issues of importance to the United States will have our attention. That means the gulf states, egypt, syria that were engaged, were hands on, and thats what hes signaling with his visit. John it sounds good. Were a mitt out, joel but israel is the president s first stop on his schedule mideast tour next month israel still does not have a government after the election who will he be talking to regarding talks on israel and palestine . The israelis have a twoweek period to form a government. Netanyahu is having a hard time assembling it. Odds are if he fails hell be facing angry people. He should be meeting with palestinian leaders, with Mahmoud Abbas to make sure that efforts are stronger and efforts are made to resolve this conflict peacefully. John do you think he will meet with abbas seriously . Yes i think he will meet with abbas the the king of jordan, and the israeli leadership. What he does with that and where they want to take it is still in determination, clearly. But the president has a relationship with abbas and a relationship with the palestinians generally that is important to American Security interest in the region. John you make me feel better about this. Director of policy and Development Affairs and former state official and senate aide joel rubin always great to have you on the show. Thank you so much. Its the science triumph of the day. Someone has finally been cured of h. I. V. Entirely with drugs. Two years ago a baby was started on an antiretro viral therapy within 30 hours of being born with h. I. V. And as of now the infection seems to have cleared up and is indetectible. The doctors will continue to follow the child but for now here is a message to all you climatechange skeptics and evolution deniers yay science. It was nearly four years ago that president obama laid out his vision for a world free from Nuclear Weapons before audience in prague. Today i state clearly with the conviction americas commitment to seek the peace and security of a World Without Nuclear Weapons. It will take patience and persistence. But now we too must ignore the voices who tell us that the world cannot change. We have to insist, yes we can. John to be sure president obamas pledge was historic. It signaled the virtual reversal in policy from his predecessor whose doctrine advocated for expansion of the Americas Nuclear arsenal, and banished the words disarmament from its vocabulary. How many progress has the president made towards its course towards zero nuclear. Now joining me is Valerie Plame which will soon with global zero. Thank you for having me. John what brought you to this topic. I dont know how many c. I. A. Operatives who do this. I made sure that the good guys whether they are terrorists or rogue nations do not get nuclear capability. They called me up and asked me to participant in countdown to zero. It opened up this door to which now i can be deeply involved in a much more overt fashion than i was previously. And we arewhat were doing this week is launching a Global Campaign one calling on president obama to continue further reductions in the u. S. Russia nuclear arsenals, but to take an important historic next step, which is calling all the nucleares powers together to the table and Start International nuclear negotiations. And they did pulp fiction and its inspiring to see figures of hollywood and political figures like yours working together for peace. What concrete actions if any have you seen by this Administration Since the prague speech . Well, the prague speech was a great kickoff, and were building this campaign towards that. It was really telling that although obama inherited an economic meltdown, as we know, his first speech Foreign Policy was about a World Without Nuclear Weapons. We know he cares about it personally ive seen his thesis was on the twisted logic of nuclear deterrents. Clearly now he has won a second term hes thinking about his legacy, and he knows this is huge. No matter what his accomplishments might be in healthcare we form or gun control or economics Economic Policy if he can really move the ball a little bit further down the field on this one, its huge. John well, im often driven to remind my liberal friends about how much Ronald Reagan did on this issue during the last year of his presidency. But considering the obstructions we see in congress will president obama have any kind of chance to finish this by the end of the second term . This is what is so great about global zero. Its nonpartisan. Its truly international, and there is a huge grassroots effort. I was in brussels a few months ago talking to topnotch students from all over the european countries. They come in, we give them training, and they go out to their respective universityies to start global zero chapters. There was a letter to president obama by general defense ministers, there was a petition recently on global zero. Org , and declaration from the European Parliament all can calling for him to use his power, bring the parties to the table. There are nine nuclearpowered nations in the world and begin negotiations. John are you getting support from conservative citizens across the world. It seems you cannot get more conservative than conserving species and the planet. Global zero cuts across. We have everyone on board from schultz and kissinger gorbechev gorbechev. Blair, musharif, and this is not a partisan issue. We cannot continue on the path that were on. John we only have a minute left but when it comes to countries like iran, isnt the best way to convince them not to enrich uranium to make weapons is really us showing that were getting rid of our own. Were fighting over who is allowed to have these weapons. You get nowhere with that very quickly. I dont think job zero is global zero is oh naive to believe that iran will sign on, what a great idea. But you set a Context International pressure that will continue to build with political will. John we only have a second left. I have to ask about bradley manning. What are your thoughts . I think what he did was wrong. At the same time, a couple of questions you have to ask what is a 22yearold private doing with access to all that information. It seems to me the onous should be on the government to properly classify, of course we overclassify everything. And his treatments has been absolutely appalling. He has been detained without a speedy trial. And its the whole thing is just so sad when you look at what happened on wall street and john exactly. He said his goal was to embarrass the government. He did it, but why has it been so difficult for folks to walk and chew gum on this and say what he did wrong and his punishment has been wrong. Absolutely. John thank you for your work. Ive been a fan for a long time. Thank you for the work youre doing. Thank you. John global zero what is the website address. Www. Globezero. Org , sign the petition. John how food is killing us. Not all food. Just the stuff you like. Thats coming up next. Cleans your jeans and wont torture your tanks. Woolite washed clothes look like new, longer. John so this week on wtf america we look at pennsylvania known as a swing state which means if youre driving through it and you swing your car in the wrong direction you might end up in jersey. Its neither a red state for a blue because its a kaleidoscope dream coat of you wtf. Take Darrell Metcalf who introduced a bill that would enforce antigun measures a felony in pennsylvania. Mr. Metcalf said he wants to make gun laws to make it unapproachable from the government tyranny. The wtfness of metcalf gets more wtfy. He said well never allow the left to benefit from the wicked acts of murders to enhance their gun grabbing agenda. But he seems perfectly allowing mass murderers to amass their gun agendas and when they have a gun it often results in mass murders. Wtf, pennsylvania. Our nation was founded in youre fine state. Youre a great state. You produced rocky and fired rick santorum. Philadelphia was where our constitution was form. Now mr. Metcalf wants to pass an unconstitutional law. John welcome back to viewpoint. We asked our viewers to comment via twitter or facebook on the sequester, and john scott g posted this on my facebook page. The democrats are to blame for thinking that sanity and common sense would prevail in congress. I agree john scott that was pretty insane thing for democrats to think. Thats like expecting the joker to be let out of Arkham Asylum for good behavior, and yes in answer to your question im a geek with no life. If you have a comment for the show, tweet us at www. If youre sitting there with on your couch eating viewpoint with a nice big bowl of potato chips, you might want to put them down. The book called salt sugar got how the food giants hooked us. It will hold them accountable for the social costs that keep them climbing even enough for them to say enough already. Michael, thank you to the show. Thank you for having me. Its a pleasure to have you. John you say processed food, the processed Food Industry has made a conscious effort to get people hooked on foods that are inexpensive and convenient. Can you explain briefly what that entails and more importantly how they went about it . It really comes down to the title of the book salt, sugar, fat. The holy grail if you will, youll find these in products in huge amounts all over the jerry store. The products will fly off the shelves. Well buy more, eat more, and they being companies will make more money. John its the perfect amount that i found interesting. You write about the bliss point. Can you explain what that is . Is that the perfect amount and how does that influence the stuff that we put in our bodies. A food science and howard moskawitz walked me through the soda flavor for dr. Pepper. It involved a regression analysis but he took dozens of formulations each just slightly different than the other to find that perfect spot that would guarantee sales. Thats called the bliss point. You can do the experiment yourself. If you like sugar and coffee, add a little bit of sugar, more and more until you add the perfect spot. Keep adding and then well like it less. Its not like we like infinite amount of sugar, but its calculated to hit that point in all their products. John it sounds like a drug high. There have been comparisons to narcotics. There is no word the industry hates more than addiction. They love cravible, alluring, and i was skeptical, too until i spent time at the National Institute of drug abuse, they have done neurological work on both narcotic, and highly pat lettable foods. Shes convinced that for some people some foods are very bit addicting as some narcotics. John how bad are these processed foods that were putting in our body. How bad are they for us, and is it fair to call them food. I was stunned. This book was like a detective story. Because when i ran across a trove of confidential records of how the industry works what is stunning they had known this, it was always known that too much salt, sugar, fat can be bad for you. But now we know the Food Companies have known this for years. And despite that have pushed ahead and added Copious Amounts of salt, sugar fat to continue what they do, which is to make their products as alluring as possible. John to make us happy. To make us happy. John yet, i dont think the ceos of the burger king are eating their product. A high level dont eat their own products, especially when they run into health trouble. I met a gentleman who blew out his knee, and he couldnt run any more. He cut all calories and liquids. Then he stopped buying potato chips. Hes one who has trouble resisting eating the whole bag when he opens it up. John america was the first empire to have fat poor people. It never happened in history before. In 1999 the 11 major Food Companies met and were presented with options of handleing the then blossoming child obesity problem and they rejected it. If they were to meet today would they decide anything different . Are they still so responsible for the profits and shareholders they wouldnt do anything. I would like to think that they would decide differently now. Weve all become much more concerned about what what were putting in our bodies. John not all of us. Well, a lot of us and hats off to the first lady. We never intended to make america obese or otherwise ill. But they are under tremendous pressure from wall street. So even when they as individual companies have sought to do the right thing by consumers and cut back on the salt, sugar, fat, theyre using there is wall street time and time again wait a minute, look at sales. Maybe we should be going to the other direction. Did the rise of subway, arguably a healthyier option sway them at all. The fast Food Industry has moved into the Grocery Store. The grocery manufacturers began to emulate fast food and another way of increasing sales. And so you see more and more foods in the Grocery Store that look like things you would buy at a fast food chain. John weve only got a minute left but is it impossible for poor folks or nonwealthy folks for people to eat like they did in the garden of amen adam and eve . Its hard. Highly processed foods little towards fresh fruits and vegetables, thats one way the Playing Field is totally unlivable. I write about families, poor neighbors in philadelphia who have taken it upon themselves to go after the Corner Stores which they view as horrible as crack houses because their kids are running in there and for 1 dollar getting 300 empty calories. If you were addicted to mcdonalds this book will make you grimace. Author of salt, sugar, fat. Michael moss, thank you so much for your service to your fellow human beings. Who is bigger, mitt romney oror Dennis Rodman. Well talk about that coming up next. John apparently mitt romney wasnt just a weird figment of our collective imagination, my friends. He gave an supervisor, and in a way he sounded like he was still campaigning. Attacking obama on the sequester while faulting republicans for none of it, could the g. O. P. Be blamed for dragging him to far to the right during the etchasketch election . Of course not. The idea that some how the primary made me become more conservative than i was just isnt accurate. No, and virtually in the next breath, and i appreciate mitt does not always stop to breathe he bemoaned questions that hurt him in the general election. You may he recall mitt and the other candidates, i call them myth and the knights of the trickle down why did governor romney lock himself in a stupid promise. Again if you said that you were not going to raise taxes then you say romney said he wasnt going to raise taxes you now he said he will. He has changed his position. Which is to say the primary made mitt more conservative than he was. Lets bring in sh errod small who has appeared on every show on tv. And comedian sue costello and comedian lee camp, moment of clarity show. Thank you all for coming. Youre welcome. John youre from proven. Im from boston. John ill ask you the question mitt romney question. Okay. John did mitt romney misunderstood the question or did we all misunderstand mitt romney. He reminds me the guy in high school the Football Player who caught the one catch and still wears his jacket. Do you remember that time because thats all he talks about, i was the governor of massachusetts. Give it a break. He has been through enough. John he has been through enough but he has not learned anything from it. He has a rich mans mouth. Thats the problem. He dont know how to talk around broke people. John thats been very true. But does the guy haveseriously, does he have anchor beliefs . No. And he kept sayinghe has no core beliefs. He kept saying during the interview minorities. I couldnt attract minorities. Women not a minority. He didnt figure that out. And like people like when a white dude keeps yelling minorities. John and they just wanted free stuff. This guy says they just want free stuff meaning obamacare, and then turn around in the same speech calling obama a tax. Which way was it . The same condescension and lack of understanding that turns so many voters off. Its not just that he doesnt understand but he doesnt try to understand. John youre right. They were in a mix, they were in a fight. The kennedy, he was the front line of all these topics but mitt romney has so many people telling him which way to go and which way the wind is blowing. His whole reason for living became about how well you can market yourself in front of the america people. John im glad hes back. I dont want him to go away. Do we as comedians ever want him to go away . I like him. On twitter i said you have to follow bill maher and sue costello because i was just talking about mitt. John im sure mitt would follow you too. As much as you might like president obama, the guy is not funny. Its not that obama is not funny. Hes just a nerd. Hes a nerd. John nerds are funny. Hes not funny. Sometimes in the erkle case. Hes boring but hes doing a great job. John let me bring up another weird interview in the news. Do you ever wonder why people made fun of Dennis Rodman in the 1990s. I know he slept with madonna but we all did. Dennis said the Third Generation dictator is just a great guy who wants obama to give him a call. And how might they two World Leaders settle their differences . He loves basketball. At the same time i said, obama loves basketball. Lets start there. John and thats not the dumbest interview that stephanopoulos has done on that show. I agree with him. I agree with him too. We agree. John yeah, heres my point on den miss rodman. Everyone is making fun of him. When billy joel played the soviet union in 87, he was booed by the american audience for doing it. Then he showed that we were cool for doing it. And Dennis Rodman did the same thing. George stephanopoulos should have been ashamed of himself. Why would you coroner dennis corner den rodman. Hes an american ambassador. So is miley cyrus. John he has a new little body. You hes he is think hes going over there to sell human rights . No. John hes going over there for the fusion of money that he needs. When asked about the 200,000 prisoners in north korea he drew an insane equivalence to over here. Thats not equivalent at all. But what he is right if we had 25 of the worlds prisoners in other prison, it is equivalent. John its buffoonery but its between justice and peace. Its a fine line. John yes, thats like aee lyric. If you need Dennis Rodman to give you answers on anything but rebounding. John well, other relics of the 1990s on the comeback trail jeb bush neither denying or confirming hes on collision course for president. I think its a lock. I think so. Lee . Why not continue the the monarchy bush, Clinton Bush John its heritage power. But he has been setting himself up to be the electable moderate, and it will be a twoman race between him and Chris Christie. I would go with Chris Christie because i like him. They would give him a hard time about his weight. But it would fun to make fun of him. John christie or clinton or bush and clinton. Bush and clinton. Its the 90s again. Thank you for my panel. Sherrod small lee camp and sue costello. And what a great show youve got going on lee. Thanks. John in last nights meet the press you wont want to miss it. Mr. Speaker thats just not true. Theyve made it clear that the president has a plan. Well, david, thats just nonsense. If he had a plan why wouldnt Senate Democrats go ahead and pass it. Well, this is where i should bring up how the Senate Democrats tried that but got filibustered but instead im going to ask about revenue. The president got 650 billion higher taxes. What more
