Well, both the head chair and vice chair saying a rate hike could come as early as next month, the market calling its buff. The market having its biggest intraday swing of two months, down 13 at the low end and up 124 at the high point but futures pricing in a 36 chance of a rate hike in september if you believe such things. Meaning that most professional traders arent willing to bet that it will actually help. Oh, and, by the way, volatility is back at a sevenweek high. Who says nothing happens on a friday in august . But, by the way, volume is rather below average, which you would expect for a friday in august. All right. To politics. After arguably the most brutal day on the campaign trail yesterday with verbal assaults being traded for hours, the candidates not backing down this friday, it all started with donald trump posting a video to instagram reviving the clintons racially charged remarks about then senator obama back in 2008. The Trump Campaign then tweeted the clintons are the real predators, linking to another Instagram Video of the former first ladys super predators remark. Well, the Clinton Campaign fired back with its own 30second ad using trumps line to black voters when he asked them what do you have to lose by voting for me . The clinton ad answers that question by saying everything. Blake burman has been following all of these moves hour by hour, minute by minute, blake. Who said a summer friday was going to be slow, ashley; right . Ashley exactly. Not this summer at least. Yeah, youre exactly right. Donald trump has been using social media on this day to launch a full throttle defense and an attack against Hillary Clinton. For example, well give you one example here. He sent out a tweet earlier this afternoon quoting from it. How quickly people forget that crooked hillary called africanamerican youth super predators has she apologized . Well, clinton used that very term in 1996 and trump brought it out again earlier today with this video right here. Take a look. No conscious, no empathy, we can talk about why they ended up that way, but first, we have to bring them to heal. You called out president clinton for defending secretary clintons use of the term super predator back in the 90s when she supported the crime bill. Why did you call him out . Because it was a racist term and everybody knew it was a racist term. Clinton not standing by on this day, though. A huge day for investors too, the Federal Reserve chair janet yellen in the spotlight in jackson hole, wyoming today. Yellen saying there is a stronger case for raising federal Interest Rates. Strengthening she says. Peter barns standing by with the details of what else she had to say this morning, peter. Well, ashley, lets get to the key line in her speech this morning. It reads quote in light of the continued solid performance of the labor market and our outlook for Economic Activity and inflation, i believe the case for an increase in the federal funds rate, that shortterm benchmark rate, has strengthened in recent months. She did not tip her hand as to timing, but as you heard there are some fed folks thank perhaps the policy meeting at the end of september might be the time to raise rates that fed funds rate a quarter point. But theyre going to be waiting on the data according to yellen and the others. But for reaction, i want to talk to one of the countrys top labor economists, Allen Krueger of Princeton University and, allen, you were in the room when she read her remarks, what did you think . Well, i guess i wasnt so surprised. The labor market certainly has strengthened. Weve made a lot of progress over the last seven years, and were seeing stronger job growth or continuation of strong job growth. Were seeing wages pick up. So i think you really cant argue with her economic analysis. That said, i would have liked to have seen a little bit more debate about whether we could let the economy go a bit stronger than we otherwise would because inflation has been so low for so long. I think there should be some discussion about whether the inflation target of 2 should be interpreted as 2 over a long period of time in which case that will allow us to have inflation above 2 for some period of time since we were below 2 for so long. But i think there is little argument that the job markets continuing to recover, and thats putting upward pressure on wages, and we are seeing inflation gradually approach the feds 2 target. So it sounds like you would not rule them out possibly in september, but they do have a meeting in november just before the election, not sure theyll do it then. And then also one in december. It sounds like theyre teeing up a rate hike at least some time this year as long as the data continues to perform. Thats right. The fomc is going to continue to be data dependent. Theyll look at the data come in. I think september is certainly on the table. I dont think its the most likely time to see Interest Rates rise. But i would be surprised if they dont increase rates by about a quarter of a point before the end of the year. All right. Allen krueger from princeton, thanks for joining us and your insights. So what do our traders think on the it floor about all of this and Janet Yellens comments and how about the rig count, by the way, did not rise for the first time in nine weeks and what does that mean for oil . Lets get right to the floor show, weve got traders at the New York Stock Exchange, the cme group, and imax. Didnt increase the number of rigs pumping out oil but where does oil go from here do you think . Well, last week we were talking about crude oil being at a top level. Starting to come off. And it did. It came off several dollars. This week came off some and thats one of the reasons why i dont think the rig count went up. It didnt feel so good to be increasing rig count when you dont see much support in the crude oil market. Very shortterm, i think we have a little bit more to go, not much. 50 after that, down we go. Its an oversupplied market, a lot of players in this market, have a lot of crude oil to sell. I think were still heading down, and i think we might even see mid30s before year end. Ashley yeah, still swimming in this stuff. Lets go to jonathan down at the nyc. Jonathan, what did you make of Janet Yellens comments today . It feels like weve been agonizing it over for years and getting the feeling that the fed doesnt know what theyre doing to be honest. What are your thoughts . Today is a day weve been waiting for all week and its nice to see our markets are still alive. Weve had a significant move today, up 100, down 100, so its good to see that the volatility is back in this market. But like from your previous leading guests have said, wasnt anything that was unexpected today. They are still claiming that theyre data dependent and the big debate now and continue will be when are they going to raise rates . I dont think theyre going to have a chance to do it this year before the election. I dont think theyre going to want to throw that curveball into any economic or political ring at this point. Especially as we get towards this election. After that, its going to be up to anybodys guess to see what they do. But the data has shown and can support that our economy is Getting Better and clearly information we get tomorrow is going to back that up. Ashley yeah, an agonizing process, though. Chris robertson to you. Theyre now factoring in a 36 chance of a rate hike in september. I think it seems unlikely before the election. Of course the fed will say that has nothing to do with it. But what are your thoughts . Yeah. I think most people certainly have a thought that theyll probably do nothing in front of the election. But i think thats i couldn why you have the move today in the dollar you had a pretty good whip in the bonds. Look at a fiveminute chart of the bonds, you can see how she talked, the market moved. So the two things forward what happens with the bonds and the u. S. Dollar. The u. S. Dollar rallied today when she was leaning toward a rate hike. Now lets see what happens next week, next friday. Unemployment number. If were data dependent, thats going to be a big number. Ashley yeah, and if its a blow out number, then maybe september is definitely on the table. Ship forced to fire three warning shots, all of this happening in one area, critical to oil shipments, by the way, 18 Million Barrels of crude per bay pass through that region. So the question is why is iran being so aggressive . Didnt the Obama Administration just pay out more than 1. 5 billion to them . Arent we friends again . Im being sarcastic. He wanted to buy and sell. He has a rationale which i dont get. Why eye kahn would roll the dice and sell to ackman not expect him to take a victory lap is whole another story. The analyst on the stock is a bull, take it for what it is worth, tim rainy making case icahn sale is positive for the stock. I dont believe that. That means there is potential buyers out there. He thinks icahn if he sells the stock he will sell it less out of conviction about the company being having a problem, more carl is very negative on markets right now. At least that is what rainy said. Ashley all right. The other thing the company is telling investors today, it is pretty much of a derek quote, that icahn, quote, is pretty positive on the stock. Theyre trying to spin carl is ashley theyre all spinning, charlie. Carl is negative on the market, not necessarily the stock. Ashley yeah. It is working a little bit. We see Julian Assange at ecuadorian embassy, he has been there many years. Are you or anyone associated with the Democratic Party concerned about what could be contained in the next email dump . Anybody that has a email address would be a little nervous what is something someone who is doing their best to take you down could potentially find even if youve done nothing wrong. No, if the worst he has to offer is what Julian Assange put out ahead of the democratic convention, which by the way ended with basically a singing of kumbayah between the sanders and clinton supporters then i dont think Hillary Clintons campaign has very much to worry about, i do not. Ashley what do you think, rich . A lot of this stuff, i feel, goes over the peoples heads almost like a drip, drip of a tap you ignore it for a while. Could it have impact . I think to some extent is hostage to what is on her emails and Clinton Foundation emails and what someone like assange might have. To your point Clinton Emails are baked in the cake, email scandal. The question can you find something so catastrophically shocking it changes trajectory of the race . You need bread crumbs of emails leading to policy change or need someone directly in email, change this policy because x gave us a million dollars. Ashley there is never a smoking gun, is there . They tend to be very careful. Ashley let me follow up with rich, with you on this one. I will talk about Hillary Clinton being very strong on the race issue, basically saying that donald trump is a vessel for hate speech. Does that have an impact . Does that resonate . Is that a good tactic . I doesnt anyone wants this campaign to be about race but that what has been the last several days. Clintons speech was keeping of her strategy since the democratic convention. Dont make any policy con seconds. Dont even attack donald trump on policy. Disqualify him for the presidency that he is unsuited and doesnt have character. So far she has to then traction on that. Ashley christie, quite a few people, a few, thousand, millions, dont like either candidate to be frank. Does this approach gain votes out there that could be gained . In other words could she persuade undecided taking this route on race . Her campaign obviously believes that it can. Look, when youre running a campaign, the first thing that you do go after your base, shore them up. Then you go after the middle. And then if youre in really great position which the Clinton Campaign obviously believes they are, then you try to cut into your opponents support. Yesterdays speech was all about republicans. It was aimed at getting votes of republicans who are really uneasy with donald trump. And that is why you saw her do things like align herself with john mccain, george w. Bush and even ted cruz by saying, you know, donald trump went after your father. Ashley right. So they clearly believe there is something to be gained by pursuing this strategy in this way, yes. Just amazing, were here in late august and Hillary Clinton is defending ted cruzs honor. Right. Ashley which goes along perfectly with the nuttiness of this entire campaign.
