Liz rioters reported that amazon and of magazine publisher have formed a new partnership. The Internet Retailer will handle printing individual subscriptions. Ashley google is moving fast to integrate its acquisition into its mapping service. A Top Executive today saying the realtime traffic will appear in more than a dozen countries. After the bell starts right now. Liz did you hear the air coming out of the market in the last two minutes . Lets get right to todays action. Founder and president of environment Wealth Management seeing the markets trending higher but remaining cautious. Three ways to make you money. We are joined. What happened here . I am the only one talking. The dead of summer. Lets face it. We are in a vise of lack of liquidity, attendance, momentum. We are blaming it on these tapering concerns, emerging markets momentum and capital flight. Macro minefields that we will have in september. Its already a conclusion. We are tired. The dead of summer, no attendance, no liquidity, and im the only one talking on the whole entire floor. Ashley we will keep you talking yes, a lot of trading right now. Probably the lightest trading week of the year. What is going on with the yield and is it over exaggerated . It might not be over exaggerated, but we have to go back. The traders are concerned with the volatility of the treasury. Most people think that tapering as about two and a half. That additional 20 basis points is all trauma right now. Succession with how much tapering there will be. It might be overdone. We might see yield go down given how much they end up tapering, when they do it and how they do it. Liz well, that begs the question. Here all of this trauma that happened overnight in asia where you saw emerging markets really get hit. Many different currencies including c20 currencies getting slammed all because of this discussion. Not even the action of tapering. What does it stand to do to our markets and are we over figuring , overplaying what the reaction really will be . I do think that most people are overplaying it. But that is the market. So we have to kind of Pay Attention to that as well. We saw what happened in april, may, and gen commander did not even do anything. I think the key to this is really whether they going to do . Where is the clear, concise plan, the transparency. But there will duke amount it will do it, and how much. Once we have that i think the jurors will come down. People will be more column in the market. And the market will have continued to rise. But without that transparency theyre is a lot of uncertainty, and everything will kind of have a kneejerk reaction to anything that comes out of the fed. Ashley you say that the market trend is higher, but do we have to see some sort of correction . We have been talking about for years. Do we need that correction before we make that next solid move up. Reporter i think in any kind of appreciating market in any kind of generating wealth from peoples portfolios, you definitely have to have two steps forward and take a step back. We have had from the rose, 160 rise in the stock market overall, and we have to be able to pause a little bit, profits of the table. Move forward so that we have a healthy gain in the overall stock market. And that is why in my portfolio we really taper or weak value. We tend to expose ourselves to that value sector to add that dividend income. I have to tell you, ultra low interestrate, lack of gdp, unemployment is not anywhere near six. Liz sorry to interrupt you. Is that why you are picking telecoms . Traditionally very nice dividend players and players. You have not seen anything paring back. That is what i think is significant. Getting so high. The yields are still coming through, then not . I have to tell you, my 21 year old daughter continues to text and use the phone all the time. My built just keeps going up. It is kind of a little bit plus because the dividend is over 4 . At t has a 5 dividend. That surely breaks them up on the ten year treasury. I like the telecom. I also like energy as well. As we are completely invested all the time in 44 Different Countries and over 15,000 different stocks, while we have a tendency to be overexposed and keep the dividend and that income coming in, we are still invested overall in the stock market in the portfolio. Ashley larry, let me bring you win. Just pick up, telecoms for the yield . Or is there somewhere else that you think is showing a lot of value . For me id like to different. Unlike europe. All of the cheerleading going on right now, people are severely under invested. Keep in mind, youre by and large epic on the quarter. All long way to go. They are at a recession. Unlike the banking sector. Here on our shores i still like financials and materials. Im sticking my neck out, but over the long haul we are in the baby steps of recovery, a longterm recovery that will be as easy as it was the last six months to a year, but longhaul financials and materials a great place to be. Liz we just had on schreiber on the air saying he is expecting 16. I thought it was 15. Now its a 60 percent correction. When i said wind, he said now. Do you hear any rumblings of that . No. I think everyone is talking about a ten, 15, 20 percent correction because we have gone up so far so fast. It is taken as 13 weeks to go a hundred points. It seems like a private that we need to retrace the steps. You have to answer the question might why we have to correct. There is no good reason why we have to. In multiples market, some 14, and for those of you dont know what that is, that is not expensive or cheap. We are in a fairly valued market. We dont need an s in battista corrector afford. The market is ripe to grind higher. So many people think we have to correct. Ashley well, my question to you to finish this. Listen, september is not a traditionally very good month to stocks in equities at all. Now we getting all the bad news of the way now . Do we expect better times ahead . Pairing in mind we have this big budget battle the knees to be resolved in washington. I think that is the big 800pound gorilla in the room. The reality is folks are looking for a yield. And whether that be on a dividend or it is not in bonds. Theyre is a lot of money on the sidelines. It is just going to basically push this market ahead and move it forward. I think in the long run we still have room to grow. Whether we take a step back temporarily or not, knows a mob of recently have been 800pound gorilla to be able to a kind of address. I think longterm i am optimistic. Dont get caught, dont get sucked in to the over exposure in the equity market and then be heard on the downside because of some point we will have some kind of a marker retraction. Liz certainly good advice. Before we let you go, you began by saying it was quite quiet and things got rather heated. Can you just let our viewers in on what really goes on in the pit behind your after the markets of closed . After the markets close peoples are look around and realize we have tea in my numbers, the fed notes coming up tomorrow. We have a lot of things. Three housing numbers coming up tomorrow. But even now theyre going on vacation are not really exposed to my people are squaring of positions, taking as little risk as possible. If you are wrong it is hard to get out. No liquidity. Very light liquidity. The tendency is small. There you have it. Liz we will see larry in a few minutes. Ashley all right. We are asking tough questions about profit estimates from wall street analysts. The names of some stocks to avoid as well as some that look pretty attractive. Liz best buy stock is on a tear. As you noted, they did report profit that rose to 84 million. This company missed expectations eleven we talk about retailers. We often talk about the weather. Actually saying that the weather in many parts of the country was wet and cold. That is one of the reasons why they did not beat the street estimates. I wish i could blame the weather. Ashley blame it on everything. Liz blame it on bad hair days. That we can do. Thank you. The futures are closing at about 15 seconds. That set back to larry in the pits of the cme. Reporter right now what youre seeing behind me is very indicative of what you see in august. A tidal wave of macro issues coming down the pipeline in the next week, not to mention the next month. Right now traders are realizing that we are in a consolidation mode. They want to see fixed income volatility tempered. They dont care that the twoyear yield is 3 to 2 and a half . And in need to season tempering to get the next move in the s p 500. Liz we will see you. Thank you so much. Ashley as the earnings season slows down, Company Estimates for the Current Quarter are tumbling. What does this tell us about the state of the market . Liz take a look. Warning investors to beware of falling profit estimates. Senior editor joining us with five stocks. He still finds them attractive entry that investors should avoid. We were looking for statistics, 29 of 37 years. Wall street was way too optimistic on estimates. They start out with numbers too high. The companies to sort of generally move down guidance and end up with numbers they can become reporting time. What were seeing is the only of a couple percent Earnings Growth in the Second Quarter. In the Third Quarter estimates of been plunging, but the rate of Earnings Growth is still expected to nearly double. By the time you get up to Fourth Quarter youre looking for 10 Earnings Growth. Your Revenue Growth projection is only 1 . After five years of Companies Cutting costs and improving their margins, and you have Revenue Growth into an broader truth . Ashley accounting adjustments, maybe. And we are seeing a lot of these proforma numbers. Liz we have somebody on yesterday. The left of the taxes. Thats a new one. New acronyms. I think with investors to five you know, the problem is the market looks fairly priced based on the next four quarters of earnings estimates. But those estimates are pretty ambitious command if you make more realistic assumptions, facts look a touch pricey. Not to say that the market will plunge. Investors need to go after companies that still have reasonable valuations, and you have to make sure that those earnings estimates look realistic. Ashley we should get right to them. Five stocks that you still think are attractive for investors. We mentioned pfizer. Does the company. Youre paying 12 times earnings. The company is getting past the pad and clifford and a couple of big pan explorations. A future there. You are paying not too much for the stock and you get a decent dividend. Dimensions danner, a company that is a very steady during store. They make small acquisitions and they improve the manufacturing process. Again, realistic expectations. Oracle and qualcomm. The sales. Smart phone boehner is sort of waiting a little bit. Again, expectations have come down. A Company Looks likely to make them. Oracle, labetalol in corporate spending. Again, modest valuation. I am leaving one off of my list. Lets not forget. They make electrical components. We have already had a strong recovery in car sales they have not started. Starting to look old and rickety and theyre due for recovery in the autumn market. Liz now we flip the idea on its head and see which three stocks will make it in . As much as i love tiffany i have to say, the growth has been fantastic. Overseas growth especially. The stock is 20 times earnings. The estimates call for this years fast growth to sharply accelerate by next year. I just think that puts you too much risk. We saw investors look up. A chemical company. Expectations there for a sharp earnings jump. Homebuilder lennar, wellpositioned for this housing recovery. You know, house prices have sort of gotten off to a fast start in this recovery. Is not going to stay fast forever, especially with Mortgage Rates above point. Slow and steady improvement of housing. Next year growth expectations might be a touch high. Liz we will put all of this of. Those of you missed it. Its also, of course, on barrons. Ashley financials. A lot of guests over the last week or so were being positive. We are concerned by rising interest rates. Doesnt that increased profits. We rank the sectors in terms of once you should avoid and once you should go after. Banks are kind of the wild card. Them all of the product growth. More bank products. Private it actually fell. The expectations are high for banks Going Forward. The Profit Growth has been there to support those expectations. They are still having room to recover coming off of a low base. A bit of a wild card with financials. Liz great to see you. You like stories in advance. Thank you so much. The great barons. Ashley appreciated. Liz already electrified. And nearperfect score. Now it is winning another huge accolade which every driver needs to Pay Attention to. We have the details when we come back. And. Best buy earlier today reporting strong secondquarter earnings while jcpenney post ad big loss. Can jcpenney learn a few things from best buy . Joining news a fox business exclusive is Retail Consultant, brian kelley. Brian brands president and founder but you also worked at sears. You were a Top Executive at eddie bauer. Youre expertise is something we look for. You can look at 30,000 feet to see that best buy obviously has done many things right. Lets start with them and get to jcpenney, brian. What do you think the number one thing did after the soap opera fired ceos and all kinds of problems and nearly going private and all this problem . What do you think number one thing theyre doing is the right way . Well, hi, number one thing he has done is taken a hard look who his customer is, really identified what is going to impress her in this store experience and he has laid out a very specific, very simple to understand program for taking the business from where it was to where its got to go. And i think that came across today in the secondquarter earnings statement. Liz i agree with you. And lets delve a little more deeply here. Their store within a store concept, i hadnt been in one in years. Neither had my coanchor ashley. I thought to myself, liz, i have to go in there because my son wanted to go get something. I was so much more impressed this time. It is still not the apple store experience. If you want a samsung product you go in there and microsoft the expertise is so much better now because those employees are trained properly now, back to that old best buy way. So didnt they lose tear way back in the past where they cut salaries and didnt have those experts anymore . Well youre absolutely right. I think they took their eye off the ball the importance of what they call the blue shirts. It is a blue shirt renewal is really fueling the experience. As people talk about the impact of showrooming and retail, brickandmortar retailers have to respond by improving the instore Shopping Experience that starts with people. That people component for best buy in particular really had to step up. To your point the model in the category really is, apple. And so they have really made that effort. Now i, ironically i was in a store earlier today. There is train e. On the floor, in in a black shirt and i wont move into a blue shirt until he passes appropriate testing till he can address the customers questions and answer them. Liz you dont get cheap with your employees, in the end you lose that expertise, especially with electronics. Here is the question. What can jcpenney learn from best buys success . You talked about the people. Im sure there are perfectly nice salespeople at jcpenney. Is that really their problem . Yeah, i dont think for them it is going to be as simple. I think that the challenge that again, the mall anchor retailer has versus the specialty category killer, what the mall retailer has to face is what sears and jcpenney and all the other mall anchors are facing which is how do we get enough people through our stores, these huge stores and make them profitable again . And have a focus on a specific customer that we can surprise and delight. Just like jolly has done at best buy, ullman has to do the same thing and ironically, you know, this guy, this guy from apple who came in, really, one of his first moves was to eliminate the Customer Insight function within jcpenney and took a flyer on his own and went off with variety of strategies that of course turned upside down for him. You have to, a, define who his customer is. Liz was a stunning move for a guy who was genius at apple stores. I was in apple stores and engaging and kind and on me but not in a negative way or just annoying. They wean like that at all. Lets quickly wrap this up by saying does jcpenney ever recover . Can they . It is going to be very difficult for them. It certainly will take a lot long their the one year jolly just celebrated today. It will have to take place slowly and i think the street is going to have to make sure that it has patience with what ullman is bringing into the stores. But its going to have to be really important that he does not go ditch to ditch on this that he doesnt try to go back to satisfy that existing customer that they have, that i think, johnson was trying to trade up to a different customer. Liz it can be done as hubert joly and best buy have proven. Thank you very much, brian. Good to have you. Thanks, gerri. Liz brian kelley. I try. Im honored actually. Ashley yes. Liz they think im willis willis. Gerri willis. Ashley i was in a best buy this past weekend. Much better. Had three things i wanted. Got in and out. Help was tremendous. It make as difference. Liz there you are. Ashley before that, not so much. A quarter foreearnings the top analyst will give us the seasons winners and losers next. Liz Traditional Media Companies are teaming up right and left to fight off the growing threat of Companies Like google. Billions of dollars are at stake and a few stock names too. We have the story coming up. Ashley Second Quarter earnings season winding down with more than 90 of the companies in the s p releasing results. Lets break down the numbers, get the inside scoop on this seasons biggest winners and losers not only for this season but what we can expect for next earnings season. We have Thomson ReutersSenior Research analyst. All around brainiac. Good to have you, sri. Thank you, ashley and thank you, liz. Liz first discuss how weve done. 90 of the companies have reported. What do you think temperature gauge really is . And, thats really interesting, youre right, 93 of the companies have reported so that is a large part of secondquarter earnings behind us. And it is really two stories that were seeing here. One is of course, the headline. Companies have beat earnings estimates but that is not the whole story. Earnings estimates have been brought down quite a bit before the beginning of the quarter. In fact if you take the beginning of the year earnings estimates were 8. 4 for the whole quarter. Those were brought down to 2. 6 at the beginning of the quarter. Companies managed to beat that. Now theyre in at 4. 7 for the Second Quarter. So yes, they did beat those estimates but they beat severely lowered estimates some thats really the story of the Second Quarter. Ashley all right. Well, sri, let me jump in here. You were on the show in july. I think i was here for that. Yes. Ashley the earnings season was just kicking off. Yes, i remember this you say the topperforming sector would be financials. How did we do . They were the topperforming sector for this quarter. Both financials and Consumer Discretionary did fantastic this quarter. They were the standouts and of course the worst were energy, materials and utilities. They have been mired for quite some time but financials are interesting. They had a 30 growth rate and thats because over the last quarter Mortgage Rates are really low and now they have started creeping up. So financials may not get that big boost from low Mortgage RatesGoing Forward but they did fantastic. I financed my apartment just recently. So and im sure a lot of other people did but with the rates at levels they were, the financials really did fantastic. Liz lets spin it forward, how will they do in the Current Quarter especially considering the regulates to are piling it higher and deeper on jpmorgan for example . Yes. So lets look what happened best Second Quarter just to give us an idea what might happen in the Third Quarter. Liz okay. In the Second Quarter, when Companies Reported earnings, they lowered their guidance. They wanted to take down estimates for their company because analysts were far too optimistic Going Forward. What we saw in the Second Quarter was, for everyone company that had a positive guidance, 6. 3 companies had negative guidance. That was really, a weak quarter in terms of guidance for the second quart similar numbers for quarter three although not as bad. That was actually the worst quarter in 10 years. The numbers are still bad. For everyone positive guidance were seeing 4. 5 negative guidance. Liz are you anticipating, she, that the financials will beat again . Financials will do well again. They have expect to have healthy growth rate of over 11 but theyre not going to beat the level they beat in the Second Quarter. That definitely is not going to be the case. Because of that lowered guidance we anticipate those estimates might be taken even lower. While theyre at 11 now they may be brought even lower best beginning of the quarter. Once the estimates are brought lowered, Companies Beat the lowered estimates. That is what were looking at for the Second Quarter. Estimates for the Second Quarter are 5. 3 growth rate for the s p 500. Will they be taken down further . Weve seen that in the past. Likely to happen again. Then the Companies Might beat lowered estimates. Ashley on the other side what were the weakest performers or weakest sectors in this quarter and do you expect those to continue to be weak in this present quarter . Yes. We actually see the same trend in quarter 2 and quarter 3. The weakest sectors were utility, energy and materials. And we see that weakness continue into the Third Quarter. One. Big reasons for that, especially materials. Weve seen Commodity Prices fall. What is more worrying, these companies two or three years ago Commodity Prices were higher, invested large amount of money in new infrastructure, large mining and oil and Gas Exploration projects. Now that the prices are down these projects are coming online the those projects are making dividends and returns they were expecting. Those prices might remain depressed for some time. That is really unfortunate. Liz quick mention on tires. The. Actually theyre the weakest. Theyre dependent on Commodity Prices. We see alcoa, all gold miners, all of them are actually doing pretty weak because of the low Commodity Prices. They invest ad lot of money. Their capex spending was alltime in 2012 and 13. That capex needs to be justified but as low commodity costs unfortunately they may not be justified. Liz yeah. Companies may not be able to recoup all those. You will see them continue to have lower returns Going Forward. Definitely see materials doing weak Going Forward. Ashley a mine of information. As liz says he is a brainiac. Sri rahman, thanks for passing us the information. Thank you. How about teaming up with other giants to take on google in a preemptive strike . Ashley seems to make sense. Dennis kneale joins us now with that story. Dennis. Hello, ashley. The wall street journal reports that some of the biggest names in media are forging a hightech alliance aimed at doing to themselves what google threatens to do anyway, automating sprucing up an antiquated system for the buying and selling of billions of dollars of tv and radio ads. The journal says interpublic group, the big ad agesy is at the heart of the joint venture which includes a e channel, clear channel, cablevision systems, Tribune Company and other titans of media. Now the main target of that effort is likely google it self. The online ad juggernaut is testing new highs in its stock price. Online ad world buying and selling of spots is highly automated business encompassing billions of ad slots and billions of dollars in spending and not to mention billions of customer clicks that provide keen insights for sponsors n television that process hasnt been automated much at all and google and its doubleclick ad platform have been making motions in that direction. Now Googles Youtube video site may be the perfect portal for tv on demand. It already gets billions of views every day. Now some today. Probably much farther out in the future than pixel pundits are betting online and on demand shows could wipe out at love regular live programing, but only if a new way to sell commercials comes along for the ride and now old line media incumbents are making a run erecting that scheme to surf the wave rather than be crushed by it. The new system could be up in six months but these industry consortiums often fail in their bid to stave off that online threat. Record labels tried it for online music and flopped. Movie studios tried it for online films and flopped. Tv networks tried it with hulu for tv shows, even that outlet is distant also ran against Googles Youtube. They ought to follow an old line from tvs hill street blues. Be careful out there. Ashley what a classic that was. Liz dont make many like that anymore. Although theyre starting once again.
