Fox news alert for you now because were following fast moving developments in ferguson, missouri, concerning the Police Shooting of that unarmed black teen. Ron johnson, the unseen commander, stepping to the microphones again earlier today along with other officials answering questions about a dramatic turn in the narrative of this case. So first police releasing the name of the officer involved in the shooting. And also releasing images of the victim, 18yearold Michael Brown, showing him, they say, in a strong armed Convenience Store robbery all moments before he was shot multiple times. Were also now getting reports that the officer involved left the area of ferguson days ago. Of course the incident sparking days of violent protest, looting, brief arrest of two reporters and comments from president obama but now as calm begins to take hold in this shattered st. Louis suburb, residents wonder if these comments will spark a new level of it violence. We thought we had it calmed down. This is going to make it very bad. Its not going to be good. Justice is what these people are mad about. How do we heal hearts . How do we solve the problem by saying anybody can say no. Mike tobin is live in ferguson, missouri, with the latest. The family a few moments ago responding to police saying Michael Brown robbed a Convenience Store. What is the family of Michael Brown saying about that . Reporter its an angry reaction. Let me get right to the first paragraph for you word for word. Michael browns family is beyond outraged at the devious way the police chief has chosen to disseminate the information in a manner intended to assassinate the character of their son following such a brutal assassination of his person in broad daylight. Paraphrasing. They say theres nothing based on fact that can justify execute style murder and prolonged release of the name and the information is the reason the community has distrust for the police and the attempt to blame the victim will not divert their attention. Now, to the Surveillance Video that was released. This all coming from the Police Incident report that was released today. According to police, it shows Michael Brown at a Convenience Store just a short time before the shooting going in and stealing a stack of cigars valued under 50 and roughing up the owner of the Convenience Store making his way out the door. Thats the motivation for why the Police Officer stopped Michael Brown. That sparked the scuffle between the officer and Michael Brown that ultimately according to police put them in the back of the Police Cruiser with a struggle to get the officers weapon and subsequent to that the shots were fired. Gretchen . So how are things in ferguson last night after so many nights of violence and mayhem and chaos . Reporter you know, the dynamic was less of an angry protest against the police, more of a block party. You had people out on the streets honking the horns and walking through the street. They were waving their signs. There was music and dancing and candles lit. There was pot and alcohol. What you didnt see was any police. You dont have the police, you cant have friction with the police. All very intentional from captain ron johnson who looks like he is handling this more like a campaign, less like a commander of a scene. All right. Mike tobin, thank you, live from the scene there. Well be back in touch with you as news warrants. So the turmoil in ferguson is sparking a surge in demand for guns. Two stores in the area say sales of guns and ammo soaring due to the fear of spreading violence. Since the shooting, one store selling five times more guns than usual. Another reports business is up 50 since the unrest began. A store owner says people are in fear of their lives. But tensions have been described in the last 12 to 24 hours as easing. That after governor jay nixon put missouri Highway Patrol in charge under captain mike johnson. An even keeled Law Enforcement veteran who is a resident from the ferguson area. Here he is from a News Conference earlier today. Last night was a great night. It was great night. There was no calls for service. We did not deploy tear gas. We did not have any road blocks. We did not make any arrests. It was a good night. People were talking. People were inspiring each other. People were getting their voices out. We were communicating a lot better. Lebron is here to react now. Radio show host in st. Louis. What do you make of everything thats happened today . Well, first, lets start with the last 12 hours. The national narrative, the local conversation is that everything was peaceful last night. We all want to believe captain johnson, that, yes, things were different. There was no tear gas. There was a litany of activity last night. There were three Police Officers three police cars, two to three broken into. A carjacking. Multiple assaults. A female was shot. There was a report of a knockout game and there were three Police Officers that were injured last night. More Police Officers were injured last night than the previous nights combined and there were no arrests because the police were told sources are telling me that police were told not to respond to these calls. So youre not going to arrest anybody if there are no police and the police are not responding to the phone calls. So what youre saying is that press conference we saw a few hours ago by captain johnson where he did in fact say there were no arrests, that theres a different meaning underneath that. Im saying there are no arrests because police were told not to arrest anybody. So, yes, there was no tear gas. The pictures look better. But the reality is there were more Police Officers injured last night than the four nights combined and so while were all on edge, were all worried, we all want to see peace break out, the black panthers were directing traffic last night quoted in the newspaper today because there were no police to direct traffic so the black panthers were directing traffic last night. All right. So in light of that, what do you make of what the police did do today in being, i guess, somewhat proactive after six days of not coming out and releasing the name of the Police Officer involved. They did that. They release a videotape, first images of Michael Brown roughing up this Convenience Store clerk moments before he is shot. What do you make of that . There is a jurisdictional fight going on right now. This first News Conference from earlier this morning that was held outside of the burned out quick trip was from captain johnson who is the Ferguson Police chief. Ron johnson, the states Highway Patrolman was not there and didnt even know that News Conference was going on and watched it on the news like the rest of us. In that News Conference, they announced the name of the Police Officer and then dropped the bombshell that Michael Brown is a suspect in this Convenience Store robbery. Then subsequently, two or three hours later, the governor called a News Conference saying everything is great. Everything is fine. You are watching a jurisdictional fight that the state police and the local police arent talking and theyre not communicating, which is making things worse. But why would the police wait six days . If they knew that Michael Brown was involved in some sort of a robbe robbery, why wait six days to release that information . I think, gretchen, that the st. Louis county police have the first night were trying to gather information. That sunday night there were riots and looting and there were fires so they were a little taken aback on their heels. And i think they wanted to make sure they had the correct information. You want to make sure you have the correct information before you release it. They never wanted to release this information. Only after the community demanded and quite frankly the governor shamed them to say how dare you people not release this information only then did the local police say, fine, you want the information. Heres what it is. Stick around, if you will. I want to come back to you a little bit later on as this news continues to break throughout the hour. Thank you. Private information, maybe yours or mine, exposed to someone who may not be authorized so now are our identities at risk . A single mother of five has her minivan stolen but manages to have the thief return her car by texting him. I was looking him. I said you just stole a single mother of five only vehicle to work. Youre ruining my life here. A woman walks out of a Shopping Center in missouri and her car is gone. Stolen. Does megan call the cops . No. A friendly bystander at this kmart lent her his phone and she sent a text message to the phone still in the van. In the text he said its in a driveway at a house for sale. He had a change of hard and did the right thing. Im glad to have it back. I wouldnt even press charges right now if they caught him. In one final text the thief said he felt bad but his kids needed a meal too and it had been a while since he had a job. Amazing story. More bad news and a black eye for the Government Agency everyone loves to hate, yep, the irs. This time the tax agency apparently failed to conduct background checks on private contractors who then once hired had access to a bunch of confidential taxpayer information on people like you and me. The blunder exposing more than 1 million americans to a greater risk of fraud or even identity theft. We have a writer for Washington Free beacon as my guest today. Heres the question. How can this happen . We all know that the irs if we did Something Like this, you or me, we would be busted in three seconds, right . Right. Thats always sort of the feeling people have whenever we hear about the story coming out of the irs. They think about how theyre treated and expectation they have as a taxpayer and feel maybe the irs isnt holding themselves up to the same standard and what it seems like and how this happened in some instances they say it was just a case of someone not realizing that a background check should have been performed for this type of person. There was a mail service they were using. Those people were transporting documents that had some Sensitive Information and they said in that case you should have done a background check and you didnt. There were some cases where there were people in the past who had a contract with the irs but they neededed to have that background check done again because they were working on a new project and they hadnt revalidated it and some instances where they werent checking them at all. What this report looked at is 34 different contracts from may of 2013 and found in five of those, you had five, no background checks were performed. In 12 they did background checks but let the contractors begin working before they got back the results of those background checks and in 20 contracts workers were supposed to be working with Sensitive Information didnt sign a nondisclosure agreement who say they wouldnt do anything with that Sensitive Information afterwards. There were a few different problems here where it seems like they were negligent and not following their own policy thats outlined which says they should be doing background checks for these types of contracts. The bottom line here is that about 1. 5 Million People may have had their personal private information compromised. The big question is whether or not the irs rings you up and says, hey, youre one of the 1. 5 Million People that may have Identity Fraud coming down the loop. Did they do that . I asked the irs about that right before i did this show. When i was looking through the report, i couldnt really tell for sure whether or not they had. It was more of a risk assessment. This is the statement the irs gave me in part. They said there are no findings in this report that conclude that any data was used inappropriately in these instances cited. Keep in mind the irs only provides contractors access to the necessary data needed to complete if the contracted work and ensures that data is recovered or destroyed when the work is complete. Im not entirely sure that answers either of our questions in terms of did they call people. It seems like they are saying, no, we didnt, but were careful so its not anything that needs to be worried about. They did tell me they have gone back and theyre working on enhancing their Program Guidelines and making sure that these security checks are done appropriately and that they started doing that a year ago. Twitter saying we have suspended a number of accounts related to this issue for violating our rules and we are in the process of evaluating how we can further improve policies to better handle tragic situations like this one. Meantime, zelda taking matters into her own hands saying shes signing off social media after bullies posted malicious photos and messages following her fathers death. She also says mining our accounts for photos of dad or judging me on the number of them is cruel and unnecessary. I shared him with the world where everyone took a photo with him but i was lucky enough to spend time with him without cameras too. How do you handle trolls and jerks on social media. We have a cpa and we have cohost of red eye and cohost of independence. Does twitter do . Im subject to a lot of abuse. I do a lot of writing online. A couple weeks ago i wrote on forbes. Com the five reasons we should admire comcast. That did not go over well with a lot of people on twitter. Because of Customer Service reps. We talked about that. I got a lot of abuse. Its not uncommon if you are out in the public eye, that kind of thing happens. I think that twitter actually should have some rules. Of course certain profanity if someone is being threatened, thats one thing. But the more regulation that i see over free speech on the internet, the more i bristle. I mean, you grow a thick skin. Youre out there. Youre going to get that abuse. I think what youre saying is it is more up to the individual who is actually on the twitter account. How do you handle it . In general i dont get a lot of negative feedback. When it does happen, i respond. Im willing to have a conversation with you. Maybe im wrong about something. I hear free speech come up a lot in these conversations. Twitter is a private company. Its not the government. If they decide theyre going to remove certain content, thats not abridgement of free speech. You have no right to say anything on twitter unless they grant it to you. They can police it however they want. This is a tough issue. I get nasty tweets like most of us do. I dont. Join the crowd. And for the record, women you get picked on for your hair and makeup. When it comes to getting nasty stuff on social media, women have it far, far worse than men. Its not even close. I get the occasional i wish you would die and stuff like that. My general response is to just block them. We did a story on redeye that had to do with twitter. A site where you can block people. I blocked 1,034 people. I have an itchy block finger. You know how i combat it a bit . I kill it with kindness. I write back. People can still hide. They can still hide under whatever handle they give. Twitter is a private company but its become basically a public forum and there are some members of the public who are jerks. Stealing cigars from a Convenience Store and assaulting the stores cashier shortly before the shooting. We have a retired commander from the nutly community police. When you look at todays events with the police releasing first those images and then video of this unarmed teen inside the Convenience Store apparently roughing up the clerk, what do you make of that . Gretchen, what im beginning to see unfold is that the people of ferguson and the Police Officers on the ground are becoming victims of policy makers of chaos on top. Youve got several News Conferences going on by several different people belonging to several different agencies so the people and Police Officers on the ground are truly becoming victimized by this chaos. What we learn in police 101 especially when it comes to releasing information, it has to be timely, as quickly as possible, and it has to be accurate. So saying that the only thing this video gives us is maybe those of us on the outside giving us a little bit more insight as to what could have been going through the mind of the officer at the time him and michael ground cbrown confronte other. I dont understand why the information was released sooner. In terms of seeing the autopsy report, is that standard . Have you seen a situation like that . Only if an investigation is being compromised. If theres an Ongoing Investigation and they feel theres evidence that could be cr compromised, yes. The facts are the facts. There was a Police Officer who confronted an individual and an individual is dead. You have a tape out there that no one knew about until today of the victim committing a strong Armed Robbery. Had all of this been put out in the beginning of this incident, we may not be seeing what we are seeing going on today. So why didnt they . Did they not know it was him in the Convenience Store . Did they what would be the reasoning for waiting this long because, i mean, police 101 would tell you that you are only inflaming the violence by not providing more information. The only logical explanation is that maybe they did not know who this individual was who committed that strong Armed Robbery. Its very important as i said in the beginning. They have to make sure information they put out is accurate and make sure what they put out certainly is not glossed over. So maybe this explains some of the reason why the delay. Six days is kind of a stretch. At least in my professional opinion. But to get back to this one significant fact, somebody has to take charge down there. You have a state Police Captain holding his press conferences and police chief holding his press conferences and governor doing that thing. Where is the mayor and city council and leadership . And people and police im sure at one point theyll come together. Those guys got to get their act together down there. Seems like the communications are well in hand at this point. Folks are talking to each other. Earlier in this case we saw issues with journalists on the ground. What do you think of the treatment of those journalists . Were Police Acting in a fair manner . I have to tell you, it goes back to mopolicy. I understand when Police Officers are under fire and lives are in jeopardy, you have to protect yourself. Even those in Law Enforcement a long time, i have concerns about militarization of the police. Thats why i go back to Community Policing. There is a problem across the country where theres a big disconnect between the police and our communities as it was in the 70s. How did we solve it . Bill bratton is a good guy to talk to. Community policing. Get cops on the streets and in neighborhoods and get them to know who they are working with and not against. Funny you bring that up. Theres a legitimate role for the police to keep a peace but there should be a difference between a Police Response and a military response. And Missouri State senator who represents the ferguson area apparently bothered by the initial absence of the governor, fyou, governor. Im calling your bull. Nasty language. Classy state senator. A lot of stuff going on here from so many different angles with the new developments today. I want to focus on the militarization hard word to say. Mike, what do you make of rand pauls comments . I find it absolutely reckless and wrong. Why . I think this is a false narrative. We never heard this claim about any riot before. You want to know what turned ferguson into a war zone . People burning buildings and people torching police cars and hurling molotov cocktails at the police. What do we want these cops to wear . Leasure suits . There is a wriot going on. They ought to have every shield and bulletproof vest and every weapon they need to quell a rig riot. A lieutenant would disagree saying we should do more Community Policing and less militarization. I agree with rand paul. Rand paul is exactly right in that you want a police force that is community minded. People feel safe and comfortable talking with the police. They dont need military grade weapons. Theyre not the military. This is not martial law. If i could complete my thought here. We dont live in military dictatorship or country where you want police to look like meers of the military. What do you think of reporters apparently arrested . Are you okay with that . Its a riot zone. Its not the first time where we have seen massive protests and police move in well equipped. Do we not want our Police Officers well equipped . Not with military grade weapons. Theyre not the military. You dont want them to have advantage over the bad guys that are rioting and shooting . A cop is killed every 58 hours in my country. Im mortified that were marginalizing police by saying isolated cases of two instances. No one wanted eric garner or Michael Brown to die. Were sorry they died. There have been four cases. Four cases in the last month where time after time black young men are killed by cops. Ten cops were killed this past month too. Black young men killed by white Police Officers. Why does that keep happening in this country . Why is black young men killing Police Officers . Youre blaming the victim. You both have excellent points. Thank you. You are both factually correct. Louis metropolitan area. You have to remember this is the st. Louis county police and Ferguson Police who are in charge of the investigation. They are not in charge of keeping the peace anymore. Jay nixon came in and decided to put the state in charge of that. So earlier today you had the Ferguson Police release the name of the Police Officer as well as then implement Michael Brown in this store shooting. Now, again, you have the Ferguson Police who are now going to answer questions about that packet of information they gave out tonight detailing what the pictures and the video of what Michael Brown did allegedly before he was shot. There have been a lot of questions about whether or not this particular community is well represented. Most of the time that conversation is termed in regard to the police and the community. Do you think they are adequately represented . The makeup of the town is twothirds africanamerican and onethird white. The Police Department is overwhelmingly white. However, they will tell you do they happen to live there . The officers majority of the officers live in the community. We recently passed a law that says they dont have to live in the town. Many live within the community. They do outreach. They do all sorts of things. They are out there on the streets. The police will tell you we do outreach. We encourage Community Policing as the buzz word but they will tell you that africanamericans do not want to become Police Officers. They do not want to sign up. They do not want to go through training. So what are they supposed to do . Thats a very interesting revelation. I dont know. We would have to do more research on that as well. Let me ask you this. What do you believe the connection is, if anything, to the police releasing this videotape of the victim, the young guy, inside the Convenience Store before he shot. Is that apples and oranges in this case . Does that have anything to do with why he was eventually shot . Again, we still dont know a lot. Even though we know more, we probably have more questions after learning this little bit. The conversation changes when the Police Officer comes upon the teenagers. Hes no longer telling them get off of the middle of the street. Hes now been told there was a robbery and Armed Robbery just a few blocks away. Be on the lookout for teenagers fitting the description. When he comes upon them, he now knows there was a robbery that took place. Very different than the story of he just ran across these two teenagers. Changes the narrative at least from his point of view. Okay. So much going on today. Its great to have you out of st. Were told this is an honor code violation, which could leave those players ineligible, but could also result in the school vacating some of their victories because two of those players, Davaris Daniels and Keivarae Russell were Significant Players in 2012 when the fighting irish went 120, in the National Championship game.
