Who you know once said it rather his son be dead than gay and that guy who once told the woman and the fellow legislator that she was too ugly for him to want to rape her and a guy he thinks that the left should be suppressed and he uses terms like fake news and actually broke in to you know Brazilian media yesterday to announce the great breakthrough that he had had a congratulatory call from Trump he is 'd in many ways like Trump but I think more disturbingly again as you pointed out is in many ways like most of the leaders of most of the big countries of the world right now they're either nationalists or they're populists they are against the international system they are against the other in their societies and they're not so fond of democratic protections for things like free expression and you look at Russia and China even in India. We're just seeing a large exit is of people and the cultural turmoil that comes from that. Well I think it comes from a lot of things I think you're right there are historical trends and shifts but I think if you looked into this you'd find a few other factors you know we've come out of a period of sort of massive globalization where it's not just been you know public policies that have driven it but new technologies technologies that make it easier for people to RINGBACK travel and communicate and see one another and connect to one another and all of those things have fact with you talked about and a fear of you know cultures impinging on other cultures but you know part of it is that the people and I was in the Clinton administration and I was their sort of selling gold was a sin we did a pretty lousy shot job of explaining to people why globalization was in their interest a lot of people started fearing that foreign countries were taking their jobs and everything was made worse by the fact that throughout the period of the past 40 years of the u.s. And most Western economies inequality was getting worse and worse and worse it really wasn't that the jobs were going to other countries technology was overtaking them but at the same time people were feeling more economic and security because the rich were getting a bigger and bigger percentage of the pie and then they were like well I don't feel so good about this who do I blame and then they would say well people are moving in here and look at all of this culture seeping into my computer it's all these other societies and so when they should be resentful of systems that are great to favor the super powerful they're becoming resentful of the least powerful the people who are desperately seeking better lives by trance you know going across borders there is another factor too which is basic governmental competence one of the things that was missed in the a Gyptian uprising. Was that one of the driving agents of the fall of Hosni Mubarak was they were picking up the garbage they had 26 percent of.
