Evening today we're chilly with. Later on with a high 44 very cloudy with a couple of showers in the lower 37 tomorrow is cloudy with the Mile High 56 on Monday partly sunny with a cool high of 46. Day with traffic and weather together on the. 5 things to know for your workday. To start your day 1st news with Kevin Miller mornings at 6 am told Chris Plante at 9. And weather station News Radio 102.9. Complete computing. Smartphones tablets. Where cyber threats and the emerging tech down hard pull the president of complete computing keeps up with here's Dan on News Radio $102.00. Good morning and welcome to the complete computing show chilly out there but we'll take it compared to a lot of other places in the country I'm here with a mission and my mission is to help you accomplish your mission in this day an age that involves tech sometimes to our thrill and sometimes to our frustration but of tech news this week but we're always here to take your calls at 433001201802640012 you can e-mail me Dan at complete dot com If you have a question and don't want to be on the air you can call in and just and we'll get your question to me and you also we welcome those who are listening on their devices smartphones and others you can download the k.-r. . App on your Android or Apple I o s device and listen in to all the great programming on k.-r. In this week a lot of crazy news in the world attack and some other that's pretty a continuation of our conversation you might say one thing in the tech world and we do cover more than just computers and smartphones we had the news about the Mars rover dying after a 15 year run. And it covered 28 miles that didn't sound very impressive for 15 years but it originally was supposed to be there a very short time 90 days in fact in probably was going to cover you know less than a mile or 2 so it did very well opportunity was the name of this particular rover but we had curiosity that did 12 miles and it still operating went up in 2012 spirit was up for 6 years and did 4.8 miles in the sojourner clear back in 97 barely got point one mile so we of course this disappeared a couple of times quite communicating because of dust on the solar she holds and then some other storms blew the dust off and us from great articles on that this week California you know we're never quite surprised when. Interesting things come from California but the governor says he wants to pay a dividend dividend to people California Governor Gavin Newsom's proposals that big tech companies pay a dividend to residents is the latest attempt to address the widening income gap in the state that both the most millionaires but also the biggest gap. An income was called income equal inequality and what's interesting about this it sounds Ok you know they're collecting our data they Google the Facebook's and whoever's But the problem is he's only planning on sharing this with the California residents so it's not quite what it sounds like and it really is being copied. Off of the last good pipeline theory back in $74.00 when the transom Alaska pipeline was close to completion the state actually finally settled in 1902 that they would give every Alaskan 1000 dollars a year annually from the fund and this is seems to be part of where they got this idea so we'll see he's asked his staff for proposals on how this might happen some think it might just be a flat out special tax on data companies others think it really could be some kind of a per capita type calculation but you know we'll see what happens with all the craziness going out there and the Green Deal and all of that nothing nothing would surprise me one of my favorite tech writers in The Wall Street Journal and she frequently quoter Janice Joanna stern she had an article this week said what I learned from the hacker who spied on me when my nanny sends me a photo of my 18 month old son busy at play I thought he's a genius but when I hacker sent me a photo of my son after breaking into the baby monitor on my wife I networked I thought I'm an idiot to be fair I did give it a certified ethical hacker which by the way a complete computing we actually train on that course and can help people get certified in that arena. You can check that out on complete dot com Our training tab taught by people who are certified in and. Emphasis on ethical. But in any event she actually hired someone to try to break into her cameras she'd read the articles about how traffic cams and cities and other kinds of i.o.t. Internet of Things devices had been hacked so in any of it she got to thinking well you know we're putting more and more cameras everywhere how secure can those tiny little lies in our private lives be well it's very easy for this hacker to get into her windows 10 laptop webcam and from there my entire home network eventually cracked my MacBook Air both operating systems were easy to thwart by the hacker if you're on guard and where there people are trying to trick you to let down your defenses Falzon basic principles and practices and we've talked about this on the air a lot this year but in any of it he used off the shelf hacking tools and most people do not have hacking skills they can't really write the code or to break into systems but unfortunately they can get tools to do so that are available in different places so an event she's making the point that I've made many times is when you add your Nest thermostat your camera your ring doorbell all these things have minimal capability in terms of security they depend upon the security of your wife a network and a wife I networked some devices have pretty good security and some have very minimal security lot of times you end up having to tune down the security on your wife I router maybe it's provided to you by your i.s.p. Maybe it's when you bought because some older quote dumber devices like a d.v.r. . Or something can't communicate or can't work with modern day security. So basically bottom line is you just have to be suspicious. Of the devices and make sure that you do have them communicating properly with your wife I router and that you've got your security as high as it can be and that you understand there anytime you have these devices there are risks you already know some people will put tape over the camera on their laptop so that people can't spy on them. Or they feel like they could be spied upon and you know having a good virus protection that's up to date having your operating systems up to date having your devices up to date there may be a new software download or a bug fix or something for your various devices including a router a camera a baby monitor or any of those devices so. That one of the best ways to course to keep you safe in if you've got a firewall aspect to your router which you should have have that turned on and set at a high level and then if there are things that can't communicate or work with that far wall then you can make exceptions you can go to what's cut called Custom Settings and in any event the reason he was able to fire up her webcam within 15 minutes was that. Basically she didn't have everything turned on she had her virus set of the lower level she did not have her fire wall in her router set at the highest level and those and then the other thing gets into having remote access turned off so people can't remote into the computer. So we've been through those things a number of times on the show and we will continue to talk about those things and if you have a specific question you're welcome to email me Dan at complete dot com. But bottom line is she learned she started out I think thinking that this wasn't going to happen and it wouldn't be easy and she found out well not so much so in any event by the way speaking of tech and tech news Monday I've got the honor of being guest host for Dr Washburn Once again you know beyond $2.00 to $6.00 Presidents Day I'll have a Coke Kading who is a state and federal tax expert and in fact is advised the governor and in the legislature on tax reform will have Senator Tom Coburn on and he was of the earliest senators to talk about government waste and abuse and the deficit he'll be on talking about the convention of states process and organization we'll talk some presidential politics we'll talk some tech to be sure and be here to take your questions and the DO's of the day I hope you'll tune Ian. Department of Health and Human Services and the Ad Council Gary Hart poll has important take information to share about your questions are his 1st priority 1433 double 092 I use Radio one or 2.9 k. R. And. By the way another topic Monday will Senator Coburn I will be talking about the funny to failure in dollar deficit our federal debt I should say and he's got some great insight on that this teenager has racked up $6500.00 on Facebook there are some tools Apple has a ask to buy which is a set of controls in the I o. S. So it could be on your i Pad He could be on your i Phone to help you control what can be purchased Now it's not the most straightforward thing in the world but if you go to Apple dot com and just type in you'll get you'll get instructions that you can follow on how to set this up ask to by Google also has the set of tools on the Android side of the world. And call family link and it also you can Google that literally and ask for the instructions and I will read them on the air to you Facebook is not quite at the same place they haven't had as many issues with this but Facebook does have a process for disputing charges or requesting refunds in the games support section of Facebook so of course. The best news is our the best technique is to talk to your kids and instruct them but some of these kids did not do it purposely did not realize that what they were doing online or with the group. Was writing up a bill so to speak Softbank you may have heard of Softbank they have made a lot of tech investments over time and they are now involved with new row in you are and if you look at the picture it basically is a. Automated vehicle smaller than what you might call a smart car has these side pocket these side doors that come. They stock it at the store in this case the grocery store and it goes to the destination delivers the groceries it is there's no human involved if you will and they've raised $2700000000.00. To continue this new row works with Softbank and some other people that are in tech investments right now they're using them in California Texas and Arizona but in some of the states they have to have a safety operator on board or in the vehicle so we'll see where that kid that was a big big topic at the Consumer Electronics Show and the auto show this year we're going to have new black boxes in airlines these will be able to transmit real data from Honeywell. As introducing a new line of air craft cockpit and flight recorders that offer more data storage and the ability for the 1st time to use satellites to retrieve accidents from in real time and this has been of you know a big big topic for several years particularly with some of the airliners that never have been found in the Philippines for example there's been debated by experts for many years and championed by safety advocates an accident investigators without satellite streaming data streaming investigators of course have to find the black box this has in Promises tremendous value for investigators and giving them insights according to veteran safety experts yes particularly came about again after the 2014 disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 which is still not been located after tremendous amounts of time and effort have been invested. We'll see if you know what the reality of it if it's sitting on the bottom of the ocean somewhere or was damaged in some way in the crash if this will still work but it's good news. And a good use of technology hopefully hopefully it won't be hacked drones we've been hearing about the drone incidents around the u.s. And some airports getting closed in basically there was a drone scare in Dubai this week it suspended flights of all day Friday. Last Friday actually because of suspected presence of drones it's the latest strain of global airports to have to ground flights because of drones is when they it was a guy in the desert operating a drone it wasn't clear if he was apprehended it wasn't clear if he was trying to be in the airspace or if the drone went crazy or a hacker got a hold of it or something but clearly we're going to see more regulations you know there are already were strict rules around the Super Bowl. And they were actually now they're coming up with anti drone devices that can hunt him down and shoot them crash a mic cetera by the way I got an e-mail on that Amazon acquired a row e e r which is one of the companies out there that is making these mesh routers as we call them and it's a 5 year old company in this case and you know typically you won't see these in the stores yet but they will be coming and you can certainly purchase them and of course now you'll be able to purchase that one over. Amazon no doubt about it we're talking about the new road delivery vehicle at the same time some studies by General Motors and way Mo it that are deep into driverless cars in delivery cars and things of that nature the California Department of Motor Vehicles said that their self reported data on companies were permits to test out of Thomas vehicles and it kind of gives a glimpse into how it's going and how it's not going and kind of the summary of this long study as they still need human hands to make it safe or to be compliant with safety rules alphabet slash Google owns way mode they blog the most Test miles on public roads about 1200000 and that ran from 7 to December 17 until last November tripled the number of miles logged the previous year. A lower rate of disengagement shows our cars are getting better at recognizing and handling of variety of driving situations and rare scenarios according to way bio this engagements are cases in which are a good thing and other words as basically means they find out there's trouble or they're in the wrong place or there's going to be Iraq or things of that nature G.M.'s driverless unit crews is testing in San Francisco tripled in miles 440 $7000.00 Their rate of disengagement was point 19 miles per $1000.00 Both companies are working to develop a robot taxi business and Apple who is also testing and has permits. As a little there in California testing there they have far far fewer fewer miles. Of course has been testing and they have had some kind of well publicized incidents if you will so at this point the summary at least in the California test is that humans still have to be involved before they're going to green light these taxis delivery cars services what have you. And we all know that dude is about Amazon pulling out of the queue to headquarter to location in New York and the brilliance I know Doc covered this and the brilliance of. Some people congresspeople and others that will remain unmentioned at the moment that you know what really of all the news and Nat the just craziness was you know that. Congress woman Cortez says that they could take the $3000000000.00 that they were going to give to Amazon and use it for social programs the problem being there is no $3000000000.00 without Amazon coming to New York and generating the revenue the tax revenue. But lots of states Virginia New Jersey and others are back in the in anxious to have that what I thought was interesting and partly about it was that Google just said that they're going to invest 13000000000 in u.s. Data centers around the country more of their cloud build out it's going to create $10000.00 construction jobs. They are looking in 24 states and 13 communities they have not announced how they'll do it whether it will be the kind of you know exercise that Amazon followed they don't for sure though there will be centers in Ohio Nebraska Texas in the Vatican those have already been announced so the interesting thing about that is the people who have privacy side of it and don't want these data centers built the people who do want to built because of the you know the jobs in the commerce and the taxes. And it kind of is people say well that kind of defies the story cloud paradigm and the fact that you can be anywhere and do these types of things including world wide but one of the points of cloud in cloud systems is that you have geographic diversity even country diversity and in some cases it's a matter of energy cost availability of workers real estate a lot of other things that are driving that So we'll keep following that but at some point looks like at least in 6 states Google will have these 2 centers will be back after the news with the more of the complete computing show. All right we're back and you can also like to be getting Face Book page you don't drive you crazy with the wind there ransomware alerts and certain updates in operating systems and other information we do provide to you this day in history in 1923 in Phoebe Egypt an English archaeologist Howard Carter entered the sealed burial chamber of the ancient Egyptian ruler Tut King Tut And so that was back and Carteret arrived in 891 convinced there was a least one undiscovered Tomb of the little known King Tut who lived around 1400 b.c. Died when he was a teenager so he had the backing of several people from a couple of different. Rich Britain and British explorers you might say and that is how he finally discovered it. In 1959 Castro was sworn in as the prime minister of Cuba after leading a guerrilla campaign that forced the right wing dictator. Tista out in 1988 the Tet Offensive resulted in many new refugees and they were supposed to. Practically rather 800000 people listed as refugees. Bill Johnson became the 1st American to win Olympic gold in down hill skiing in 1984 President James Monroe in 1786 mary's Elizabeth court right she was a 17 year old New York Beauty and Monroe was $26.00 at the time so her dollars were made legal in $878.00 based on the explosion of mining in the bland Allison act 1944 peel it surprise winner Richard Ford is born from in Jackson Mississippi son of an attack traveling salesperson or salesman rather and he lost his father when he was 16 and Chopin played his final Paris concert in 848 and those are some things happening in this day in history we were talking earlier about Apple and Google and privacy and all those things and Apple is telling their developers to remove code that allows them to effectively record how a user interacts with their i Phones We have notified developers that they are in violation of the strict privacy terms of Apple and are guidelines and will take immediate action if necessary and we all know about tracking it could be location it could be using the microphone could be the g.p.s. The Apple maps lots of different ways that you can be tracked and we've talked many times on the show about how you can indeed buy app individually control those types of things but Apple has discovered. Yet some people some of the apps were tracking even when people turned off the rules or said opt out or did not want to be a part of it and they found out sometimes things like passport numbers credit card numbers and other things were leaking out so Tech Crunch happened to report on this this week so we'll see how but they follow through in what apps get removed. Applegate developers less than the day to remove any code in their apps that would violate these policies. We've heard a lot about you know screen time the dangers of screen time the interruption to your sleep by seeing that quote blue screen where Google is in others have been working on this for a while but now Drew goal will have a night theme dark mode for the chrome phones Android if you will and it isn't out yet but they're close to releasing it. They don't know if it will make it past the beta testing and all of that but it appears that they are committed to doing this and moving forward you know Apple and others at times have had night modes and sleep modes and control your world and different apps like that out there but this seems to be the 1st time Google has really gotten behind this. Fact it was another discussion that was in a couple of Wall Street Journal tech articles and one of the authors said you know the 1st thing I do in the morning is check my phone I grab it off the charger I silence the alarm press the power button and the screen comes to light the screens are bright and colorful eccentric such eccentric However in dark mode sometimes called night mode is a great idea. And some people have opted for that some people dim their interface using manual controls or 3rd party software but if you're using the tool all day like most of us you know the dark mode or the night mode is easier on your eyes and his whole argument is that every gadget in app should have a dark mode so he was ahead of his time here I guess you would say but the evidence on what it does or doesn't do to sleep cycles and eyes and all those kinds of things is you can find studies on all sides of that some people just say well you can turn it off and that's a fact as one option Google Maps we all know about Google Maps and you know they're on balance they work better than a lot of other mapping they're not perfect to be sure but some people are really complaining now about that they've gotten too good in that there's no hiding from that blue dot so if you turn on Google Maps and you have it it be kind of like having navigation in your car where it's constantly showing you where you're going and in most cases and this particular reviewer does a couple different magazines last week said you know we all know g.p.s. Has some you know pluses and minuses but he's wanting a way to be able to turn off the mapping or the part that says where you are you know where you're traveling where of you been types of things so we'll see if the industry responds to that. It probably will most people like it but people do wonder well if I know where I'm going in the blue dot shows where I'm going Who else knows where I'm going and who else is tracking it some of you know they're already insurance companies they give you a break if you carry a little device in your car that tells you tells them you know how much you're really driving and how much time and distance and all of those types of things so we're seeing a lot more uses of g.p.s. But in this particular. Article they think the new avocation that we'll see and of course that's one of the problems with these self driving automated cars they've learned that the bad thing that works great for a human is not quite detailed enough ness into Can't always deal with the issues you deal with if you're automated and there's no human on board so to speak. So several of the mapping companies This doesn't say Google is doing this but several of them are looking at giving people the opportunity to opt out if you can you don't want to see the Blue Dot you don't want to be on except when you're ready to use it and all those types of things so we'll be following this as they update those features We'll be back to talk about and answer questions about our drives I think this week. The computing show we'll talk drives here in a moment right now I have a question. Caller that wants to hear about 5 g. You know I want to hear the national media talk about this the non tech people it's kind of interesting the way they present it but long story short it's been a decade coming to and getting to the point we are with 5 g. Carriers are starting to roll it out in a few cities for testing it will be around the middle of 19 and more comprehensive rollout will be in 2020 there are more questions than answers about 5 g. Primarily because as you go up in Spectrum In other words higher frequency coverage goes down penetration goes down and that's been true with wife I it's true in the cellular world when I was in that world years ago but in any event what 5 g. Is primarily going to do. 5th Generation is really what it stands for and some of you can go way back and I did a history of cellular a couple shows but we're basically now coming from 4 g. L.t.e. Is what we typically have on our cell phones in our devices that you cellular right now and move into 5 is going to do 2 primary things One is we're going to see much faster download and upload speeds 10 times what we see with 4 but the last time we had about a 10 fold increase also latency is going to be one of the big changes latency is when you connect to a video. Our website or do various things with your smartphone or your tablet and there's a delay sometimes it's your device sometimes it's where you are sometimes it's the memory you have in your device the latency is going to dramatically decrease so it's going to allow a lot of things to work better and a lot of things that couldn't work via cellular to work in the future the other thing is that in the past when they rolled out for. The For example it was strictly cellular now in 5 g. The operators in is going to be a lot more players they're going to deliver to your home for instance instead of having a cable or some other typical i.s.p. Delivery mechanism the telephone lines etc We're going to see a lot of people delivering broadband to the home using 5 g. Signal now we already have signaling happening of course some people already have wireless as their i.s.p. Delivery mechanism because the traditional methods aren't available in their area but it doesn't always work as well in it yet to be determined how well this will work it will depend on the number of cells now some cities are rejecting the 5 g. Build build outs because it's going to require a lot more towers and a lot more antennas and some people don't want that in their community. But in the team mobile and sprint in a t. And t. Verizon the course of the big players in here and they're going to be again using different spectrum some of the spectrum was made available when t.v. Left analog and went to digital and so now they call it the im wave that's what they'll be using again speeds of up to 10 gigabits think about that you're wired systems are typically one gig and then we do have switching switch to switch and some of our offices and backbones that are 10 gig the major drawback will be low coverage and building penetration because of the higher frequency. A lot of Io t. Devices today that work of wife I could switch over to cellular or some derivative of this 5 g. Signal so I o. T. The Internet of Things will get into higher gear than it's ever been autonomous vehicles could play into this infrastructure like streetlights traffic lights a lot of things are going to happen when 5 g. Is really out there and if for effect it figure out you know the density and all of those types of things you may have heard of Arisan did a buyout of a lot of employees or at least that it's pinning they're doing that so they can make huge investments in 5 g. So it's a little bit about it we'll be following it when we have the 1st test cells of the 1st availability in our market and people frequently say well I'm going to buy a new smartphone say in the fall when there's 3 new Apple phones or whoever will it have 5 g. Capability right now they don't have a statement on that and there's not one of the features that they're promoting and that will be another interesting aspect and that is what will coverage be with the devices particularly until the networks are totally built out. So that's a little bit of history about 5 g. And thank you for that question we talked about it. Got a couple of questions about hard drives and you know typically I don't recommend people invest a lot of money in a computer or a laptop that's over with if it's over 5 years absolutely I don't recommend it if it's 3 years if your user that truly just does e-mail gets on the internet maybe you can make some exceptions don't waste your money on high end graphic cards new brother boards things of that nature but a little bit of memory or a different hard drive can give an older computer or laptop new life the biggest change has been going to s.s. The solid state drives they truly are it will make a big difference we put tons of them in every week. And we always you know make a determination if it's the right thing to do you won't get the maximum capacities out of s.s. D.'s unless you want to pay a lot of money but most people can live quite comfortably with you know how 250 to 500 gig drive sometimes less but you know on the traditional drives say drives and even back you can get an 8 terabyte drive an external one u.s.b. Attached for $2300.00 which is insane it wasn't even 10 years ago that would have cost you you know who knows anywhere from 2000 to $30000.00 depending on how it worked what it was it's a backup capability except for it but there are some good options out there if you just need more capacity and you don't want to invest in you don't care about speed you're speeds not a problem. So you can get Western Digital you can get Seagate those are the 2 big ones are going to encounter most of the time then there are in the s.s.d. Side Samsung is probably kind of is the leader there's no doubt about it in terms of the ratings the capabilities the numbers of drives and some of them have a u.s.b. C. So if you want an external one some of them are course internal In those are most of the ones we're putting in excuse me but I'll give an example my wife has an i 7 Intel laptop it is about probably 4 plus maybe even 5 years old but has a lot of ram it's in Windows to now but it was getting very very draggy and you know as saved it drives 98 drives there their physical they have motors they have arms they eventually wear out so I put a s.s.d. In. And it's like a new computer I mean in terms of boot in terms of storage so it can be a good thing to do just be advised if you're going to do it and do it yourself which is fine but typically if it's a laptop you need to use extreme care if you touch short out. Clip in some way you know that motherboard or any of the interface to the screen or those then cables that are in there that can to act. You can you can definitely run your laptop or cause yourself a motherboard so we don't charge to assess a problem or give you an estimate and we'd be happy to do that if you're just want to try and do drive to because you have a capacity problem or you want more speed out of that old computer or you know it's clicking or you're getting warnings about it being a problem and there's nothing at the moment beyond s.s.d. Other than the s s D's and they can run anywhere from a couple $100.00 to very expensive if you start trying to get terabyte and beyond. And there are different perform. It's some of them have better warranties them have better performance some of them have the ability to have an external connection in addition to the internal connection so there are a lot of options out there and but not as many players in the s.s.d. World as there are in the traditional drive world although even they are starting to to dwindle in terms of they may use different names but they're the same people same on memory memory is relatively cheap sometimes you have to ditch your old memory to be able to match or to get to the maximum capacity that your computer allows and you can't just guess the speed to connectivity and else things matter and we have guides that tell us what you can hold and not hold and how to get there but particularly with Windows 10 for works but very slowly 8 is pretty decent and if you're in a gaming video counting database other kinds of things then clearly you're better off with more it's pretty hard to get past 16 on an older computer but New York computers have options some of them have 32 and now Intel's just released their new memory. Just shipping I would add some of the 1st computers with it the other day and it's they claim that because of this memory that a computer will perform like it has it has as the Dr even though it doesn't mean world going to do a show on what that is because really we haven't had a lot of innovation in memory and or drives since s.s.d. Came out we'll be talking about that in a future show. So those are some Thank you for that question you can always e-mail me Dan equably dot com if you didn't get an answer I didn't get your email because I do answer all those e-mails sometimes they're buying decisions sometimes their problems sometimes they're just I have wondered about this and you're always welcome to email me about a topic that you heard of heard we did and you missed it but you can get podcasts of the show on tuning in and on i Tunes pod being and you can listen to prior shows and I do special podcast it might be about why 5 tuning our security or those types of topics and we appreciate all the people that download those and recommend to others because we are mission again as they help you accomplish your mission there's a lot of misinformation out there in the world or somebody who's encountered one computer one brand one scenario. Doesn't see all the things we see with my team over 37 years and we always are trying to give the best possible advice while also considering a person's budget it's interesting when people say what should a laptop cost or a computer cost you know it's driven by 3 fundamental things the processor the amount of memory and the hard drive thanks to Justin for producing heaven for the news you for listening don't forget I'll be guesting for document of President's Day hope that soon and then we'll see you next Saturday on the complete computer.
