Well the Navy isn't saying much at this point as you mentioned you know the crash is under investigation but here's what we do know this aircraft a c 2 a greyhound propeller plane was on its way from a base in Japan to the u.s.s. Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier when it crashed Pan's defense minister told reporters the u.s. Navy told him that it was likely an engine failure but the 7th Fleet has not confirmed that yet the u.s. Navy hasn't yet released the names of the 3 sailors lost at sea or of the 8 others who survived either and it's not an understatement to say that this has been a pretty bad year for the 7th fleet hasn't it yeah it's been a really tough year for the 7th Fleet This is a fleet that has up to 70 ships navigating both the Pacific and Indian oceans and this year alone they've had 2 major collisions both involving guided missile destroyers the u.s.s. John McCain in August in the u.s.s. Fitzgerald in June and those 2 accidents killed 17 sailors in all of this has led to the removal of the fleet commander as well as 7 other top brass crewmembers in the fleet of publicly complained about being overworked its function in the ranks and low morale and keep in mind here that this is the fleet that has been called on to respond to the threats in the past year coming on North Korea so it has been a very stressful year N.P.R.'s Rob Schmitz thank you so much Rob Thanks to all. These are busy times in Washington Congress is going to reconvene on Monday amid many stories of sexual harassment Republicans are rushing to rewrite the tax code before the new year and President Trump is going to be pushing them to get that done Meanwhile a special counsel is investigating the president's ties to Russia and just this morning there is some news on that story we're going to talk all this through with Jeff Bennett he's N.B.C.'s White House correspondent he's here with us in studio Hey Jeff thanks for coming in sure thing Good Morning All right so numerous outlets this morning Jeff reporting that President Trump's former national security advisor Michael Flynn may be distancing himself from the White House in this Russia investigation tell us what's going on there at what we know Michael Flynn's legal team has informed President Trump's legal team that they will no longer share information as it relates to Special Counsel Robert Muller's investigation and so we know legal experts say that defense teams often share information and materials that they have in common while advocating for separate clients this revelation doesn't prove that Mike Flynn is now cooperating with the special counsel investigation but it's the clearest indication yet that he might be and what would that mean for President Trump slippers Well it well it would the question I think that we should talk about is what it means for Robert Muller because it does really is it gives Robert more behind the scenes a look at the campaign at. Transition and at the early days of the trumpet ministration because Mike Flynn is you know was there for all of it he was the central figure in President Trump's national security team he only served for $24.00 days of course but if he is cooperating we have to say of course at this point it's speculation we don't know for sure that he is but if he is he has a lot information that he could share with the special counsel and do we get any and we got any evidence from the White House this morning are we got any I suppose . Whisperings White House this morning that President Trump's lawyers might actually be worried about this turn of events Jay Sekulow who is I want to President Trump's attorneys says that we should not read too much into this but you know as I said before Mike Flynn was a central figure very close to the Trump campaign and President Trump was asked about Mike Flynn just 2 days after he resigned back in February Take a listen to what he had to say General Flynn is a wonderful man and I think he's been treated very very unfairly by the media. Treated very unfairly by the media One wonders what President Trump has to say about General Mike Flynn at this point yeah yeah well another politician making news obviously is way more the Republican candidate for Senate in the Alabama race accused of sexual misconduct with teenagers we only have a couple weeks left in this race can we make any predictions there and I got out of the prediction business number of 26 but we do know president trumps wondered aloud before he left from our logo the question was you know will you go campaign for room were more there in Alabama and he said we'll see I'll let you know next week I talk to some staffers about that they're not even entirely sure if the president will actually go to Alabama and campaign alongside way more talking to someone more supporters in Alabama they say it doesn't even much matter at this point because they already view that implicit endorsement from President Trump on the South Lawn as as an endorsement in and of itself he gave Republicans cover to support were more right more in the sense that he said it's important to have a Republican hold that Senate seat for all the great many things that president wants to accomplish at the top of that list right now of course his tax overhaul tax overhaul right Congress goes back to work on Monday I assume that's at the top of their agenda Yeah that's right they're actually the big 4 as they're known McConnell Paul Ryan Nancy Pelosi Chuck Schumer they're all set to meet with President Trump at the White House on Tuesday to talk about tax reform and the end of year legislative agenda items so there's a there's a must do list for Congress and there's a like to do list for Congress as they come back to Washington and look to the end of the year taxes at the very top of the would like to do list the thing they have to do is pass some sort of government funding measure ahead of a December 8th deadline to keep the government running and Democrats want to tie to that bill protections for dreamers the doctor protections that President Trump ended some months ago they wanted they want to cut a fight into law the protections for the roughly 800000 young people who came to the country illegally and he said You're out of the prediction business but do you think Congress is going to get some meaningful work. Done now b. Between now and the end of the year we know it's interesting about this Republican say on the record that they have to do something on taxes. But I think Lindsey Graham said it best not just because the Republican base wants to see something done on taxes but the donors also want to see Republicans do something have something to show for their control of all the levers of power here in Washington something does need to get done n.b.c. News I'm Noel King and I'm Steve Inskeep good morning picture a map of North and South America the 2 continents together have one incredibly long Pacific coast so they share an ocean and an interconnected chain of mountains similar landscapes similar climates in some places and similar news stories last month wildfires spread across California wine country N.P.R.'s Philip Reeves found a strikingly similar tale far down the coast if you think there's nowhere like California you might want to reconsider there is a place 5000 miles to south. America's west in age like California it's a long thin sliver of land between the mountains in the sea like California that of geography allows chili to produce world class winds up to the west earthquakes deserts a couple of gold rushes and these 2 places similar to this something else. And then we're in the hills of Petaca in central Chile this is part of a big chunk of Chile that recently suffered a severe 7 year drought and then. Here with 3 young kids in one of the cluster of ramshackle homes near. The river provided water for a local gold mine with her husband worked in the drought it used the river to a trickle the mine closed the husbands moved away to find a job returning home only at weekends plans to move the family out. A place without water has no future she says in January was hit by an extreme heat wave followed by the worst wildfires in the country's history the sunset were like her small. As a climatologist at the University of Chile I remember taking a plane from the south I would look. Out of the window and it was just small and small and small talk really terrifying The far as destroyed forests and farmland and even small towns 2300 square miles were burnt like California it happened in wine country. You know the mountain right there in front of us the hill right there was just in front of us. States one of the top has. Reached the edge of this. Capital Santiago. Also saw them from the air by a was. And controlling World War I was. Looking for the city looking for a specific point. The huge shock to the wanted to know why they happened. The climatologist says the can't be blamed on one single factor most of things explained their highest a cure by the drought and high temperatures of course and few for this to happen. Been going through some extreme climatic conditions recently government directly attributes fees to climate change in we are used. To here. In. The effects of that it felt here in the vineyards. And new vines being grown in different positions to give grapes more shade in this part of. The right. And some lights more intense Do you believe that is because of climate change absolutely no doubt. But some people do. Have begun establishing vineyards in the cooler south of Chile. In the end disfigured was saved from the chandlery 5 s. Just a few vides weapons as well so lots of grapes were damaged by smoke we were lucky or were lucky that's the kind of luck many Californians could have done with Philip Reeves n.p.r. News *. Sounds fun right later a graduate student played by the actor Armie Hammer falls for his professor's teenage son Aprils his lead film critic at l.a. Weekly and she joins us from n.p.r. West Hey April Hi there and I know well critics really love this movie including you as you by review what is the big deal. This film does romance and a recreation of falling in love so well that I couldn't help but fall for it one of the things that I love is this dialogue back and forth of these 2 men who they tease one another and it's sweet it feels almost as though we can see their brains kind of sinking in the same way that their bodies are and to me that's real love and a lot of directors they don't quite know how to portray that on screen there is an interesting age difference between the 2 young men who fall in love all over the graduate student is $24.00 and the boy who falls in love with him is 17 What do you think given given the times we're in you know I was an easy with this for a moment but it feels it feels like is presented very differently because it is set in Italy. The age of consent there is 14 and they seem to treat these teenagers as adults who are making their own decisions who are on their own is from an American lens is still a little bit on easy for me but at the same time these 2 characters are they are both very intelligent and sometimes the the idea of age would just kind of vanish from my head as I was watching it so this is a movie that brings to mind some other love stories like last year's moonlight or Brokeback Mountain for example how does this film feel different from those Honestly I have to say this one feels more like a classic film got a new No the director is so good at directing not just what you see and hear but how you feel things you smell things the whole orchard that they characters live in you know you can you feel as though you can smell that these these peaches and stone fruits that are growing on the property sounds extraordinary April Wolf is lead film critic at l.a. News I'm Noel King and I'm Steve Inskeep President Trump spoke today with his Turkish counterpart rage up tie up here to watch this call comes at a difficult moment diplomatically between the United States and Turkey which is a key NATO ally although Turkey's foreign minister is insisting this week that the alliance remains strong N.P.R.'s Peter Kenyon has covered the story for years he's based in Istanbul Hi Peter I state you know I think if you have to say things are good sometimes indication they're not yeah exactly and I've been talking to a lot of folks recently diplomats politicians ordinary Turks on the Street analysts and all the answers I'm getting are negative it's bad it's getting worse why isn't it being turned around and I talked to one analyst in an old and he had to think tank here in Istanbul and he says this doesn't feel quite the same as the past crises that they've had and there have been a few over the decades but this he says is a little bit different Here's how he put it the relationship is indeed very bad there's a very significant erosion of trust which we really haven't witnessed in this relationship over the pos many decades now what he's talking about is this rising anti-American sentiment in Turkey you hear it all the time it's quite regular for people on the street to say yes of course America was involved in the school he had attempted coup last year. Ok yeah exactly and possibly even the CIA was involved also kinds of stories you can hear and the reason the u.s. Denies it of course but the people here say Why else would you not give us back this cleric to Toula Glenn who Turkey says was behind the coup and then you look at it from the other perspective if Washington looks at Turkey it sees state of emergency still ongoing tens of thousands arrested a lot of people sacked from their jobs they watch Turkey buying Russian missiles instead of from a NATO country storming out of recent NATO exercises There's also a lot of anger at. Here in Turkey over trials going on in the u.s. Including one about alleged evasion of Iran sanctions Ok so what is that one of these trials you're describing Well this one in particular it's known here is the gold for oil scheme Turkey allegedly made payments for petroleum products to Iran but disguised them so as to avoid u.s. Sanctions on doing business with Tehran now the reason it's a big deal here is because similar charges came up in 2013 at the time when President ridgetop erred on in this cleric to to the glen had their big split there was an explosive and I corruption probe alleging graft at the highest levels of government some of those same claims are going likely to appear in this trial and there's fear here that a possible wiretap evidence could be used including maybe the voices of senior officials so there's a lot of nervousness here you know Peter as you're talking I'm thinking about u.s. Relations with another country Pakistan where the 2 sides sometimes are furious at each other almost seem to hate each other on their news events that make things worse from time to time but in the end they decide they have an interest in cooperating on some level does Turkey still see its interests in such a way that that the interest would dictate that it stick with the West and stick with the u.s. Even if they're not happy about it on occasion as these latest comments from the foreign minister suggest they do again seeing that tune that their relationship is too important to break it's not beyond repair but there's a lot more urgency now about the need to get things turned around now and everything we're seeing so far suggests just the opposite Turkey's moving towards Russia especially on Syria and there's strong willed leaders who may not be in a conciliatory mood so what happens would mean to be seen Peter thanks very much thanks to N.P.R.'s Peter Kenyon. News I'm Steve Inskeep and I'm Noel King and it is Black Friday it's a big day for retailers and this year seems like the perfect set up unemployment is low the stock market is strong so is that going to mean big time holiday shopping N.P.R.'s Sonari Glinton is out there getting a firsthand look hasten Ari you know well where are you right now I am in the parking lot of the toys r us in midtown Los Angeles and is it packed. I know it's not packed but there are there are there are tons of people inside sort of milling around the Seems to be like the early bird special Actually I saw a bunch of kids and so I. See like that it's the purpose so that's also pretty impressive that they drag themselves out of bed Yeah exactly so his arrest is one of those companies that is going to be on for 25 hours while beginning on Thanksgiving through to the end of Black Friday this is not your 1st time at the rodeo How does what you're seeing today compared to what you've seen in years past well it's been a lot different over the years I remember when we would be doing great Wednesdays stories in a few years ago where you know literally stores were opening at midnight on the wins that before Thanksgiving but sort of consumers have rebelled right so they've said no we would prefer to do it on Friday and so last year the most popular hour was Black Friday at noon was a couple years ago the most popular hour for shopping was Thanksgiving at 6 pm So that's a little nuts he's so we talked about this in the intro there are some good economic indicators this year right low unemployment a really strong stock market what are the economists you're talking to saying about holiday shopping this year is going to gangbusters no not again busters at least for her brick and mortar retailers right so right now we already are seeing record sales on smartphones so that's the thing but the places where not like toys are us the sort of middle tier the Sears Kmart those stores are not going to do as well however where we're going to see some growth are you know the big online retailers like Amazon and Wal-Mart who are going to duke it out for supremacy during this holiday shopping season and have the online retailers grown in the past year I mean from 2016 to 27000 you think this year the online retailers will be eating up an even bigger share of the holiday shopping season yet each year is about more. Online and where you can get it online and it's give it to me with free shipping quickly and give it to me with all the variety you can and that's really what online is but here's an interesting thing in America what we're looking at is people are craving the experience so the stores in the malls that create shopping experiences are going to get back more customers I mean they already are and we're seeing that there is a lot of money being spent on experiences as we sort of shift the way you know the data is saying that we're shifting away from material things and going a little bit more towards experiences you know things like spa treatments or. Going to the mall for dinner as opposed to dropping a bunch of money well if you're going to be out there all day I do hope you get some of those experiences yourself oh you know I will I'm always going to talk to you you know N.P.R.'s Sonari Glinton thanks so much scenary always put. C.b.x. . This is Morning Edition from n.p.r. News I'm Noel kick and I'm Steve Inskeep if you felt like the last couple of years have been particularly heavy hard made you want to run away well Arcos Rachel Martin said down with the Icelandic musician Bjarke whose new album is designed to take you somewhere you've never been so that you might be able to let some of the weight go. Barracks music has always had this otherworldly quality to it she's maybe the world's best known card musician this time around the feeling of just jetting off to another planet is explicit this time we are searching for. The. I want to feel like this. Come to this Arland and the little the sounds and birds and plants that you've never seen or heard before. And. It is an interesting intellectual exercise to think about what what utopia sounds like. Yeah I think so we did a lot of research into Mr law to grow stories from South America and Africa. From all over to that type through Senate and they all seem to have that sort of same kind of story where all of the women escape with the fleets and children and they go to some place where there's no violence and no aggression and they form a new society that's utopian but then always 3 quarters into the story. The the males return the men ruin the utopia we know that I think in the end 1st they come in some aggressive way but then they have to negotiate the stories always and like on some sort of turn where the sexes have found a new way to communicate so it has a happy ending but I think the beginning of this and the utopian idea is very much about escaping aggression and escaping as almost like about the car protest to say Ok I'm going to go with the children and we flip through over to that corner over there and that's where I'm going to define my utopia. And then one side to find that we can talk. Spirits made her own radical departure after her last album it was called. And it was about the pain of separating from her long term partner for the album utopia she is some old a 12 woman the flute orchestra to create one. björk Calls a sound that is light and fluffy. It is an instrument that you have worked with for a really long time this was your 1st instrument growing up in my right Paula Yeah I started playing the flute when I was like 5 so many people learn the piano 1st or maybe the violin a string instrument but when the flute when that is the 1st instrument I wonder if it has influenced how you compose music yeah definitely I mean I started writing. I would walk I walked outside and I lived on this. And that generation we were walking anywhere there and I would sing a lot and that would be like my friend like oh I would sort of cope with all the different where this and the darkness I think when you walk and sing of the same time you know you're probably regulating your press took a certain risk. And I still kind of that's my most preferred way of singing still is walking not Foster and his interest but. Very early I'm not much of a. Hiker. What is your can I ask you what is your go to song when you're just walking around the city but I think most of the time when I'm singing it's just more I just make things up. All the people not even my old haunts. Me always try to walk somewhere where nobody can hear me so I. I'm not really clear with because I think for so long and. So I think I'm probably quite good at hiding I have to say there's something funny about the idea of your cool walking around singing to herself and then being so embarrassed that you didn't stop. I mean you are Bjork you're pretty good singing but I'm not to be asked and. Nobody is and I couldn't do themselves. That beard is an icon to artists and fans around the world so when she took to Facebook in October to describe sexual harassment she had faced the world noticed björk says she did it to stand beside the growing number of people who are publicly naming their perpetrators or the women now that are coming out there they knew that if they would stand up they would just be lit to kill it. And what's so beautiful about this knowledge is it's changing and it's a wonderful Also for me to have a young daughter and I feel just confident about that she's not going to have to take this on you know I think it's really fish tank was a big change in the air. Do you think Utopia is possible I mean did you pick that title because you are inherently an optimist or is it a more cynical interpretation casting it as a sort of naïve expectation I think it's all of the above I like the complexity that the title to topia brings I have 6 younger siblings I was the oldest one and I had a child to nurse I was a single mom but I only I've always had a lot of kids around me and you know when you're bringing up children you have to have a plan spitted to her plan with optimism that has to be a way out and I feel I am a stubborn optimist in that way but I don't think I'm. Under realistic I think. With any situation once you have to have the much a nation to think of. And then on the health of it or even just a quarter of it close to that still plenty but still along. The new album is called. We've been speaking with Bjork thank you so much for talking with us thank you. It's Morning Edition from n.p.r. News our theme music was written by b.j.
