News I'm Rachel Martin and I'm Steve Inskeep on the day of California's primary we noted the potential for Democrats they dominate California politically which gave them a chance to target some of the Republicans who still represent California and the House of Representatives yet Democrats face to danger yesterday of splitting their votes between too many candidates go out all work out Eric Bauman is our next guest who's chair of the California Democratic Party Mr Chairman welcome to the program. Good morning and thank you for having me and it's nice to be listening to you over a phone when it's not my podcast and well thanks for listening to the podcast or whatever else you listen to appreciate that I want to know you're in Orange County California outside of Los Angeles location of some of the key House races did you get the candidates you needed to win how seats no in November you know I have to tell you we've spent the last month battling a media narrative that said we were going to get shut out of all these races we had too many Democrats and I kept saying well we have an overpopulation problem we don't have a quality program a problem that we should explain for people over population you mean there were too many Democrats running too many Democrats so many Democrats though too many ways and you wouldn't be a top 2 in this not exactly exactly California Democratic Party working very closely with Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee we have held one of the top 2 seats in every targeted congressional seat and that's Republicans worst nightmare because what they want to do was lock us out they know they're vulnerable oddly enough in 2016 Hillary Clinton won each and every one of these targeted districts aren't County for the 1st time a Democrat has done that in probably 70 years and so when we go into the November election in a state where the president has a 26 percent approval rating and we're going to reclaim one all of these We're pretty sure we're going to pick up quite a few of the seats are you pretty sure that basically getting any Democrat on the ballot in November was going to be sufficient for you to gain seats well was a question of any Democrat These are all the top cream of the crop who won each of these races because in each of these races we had at least 2 candidates who were solid top tier candidates and in each of these cases including a couple of. Other surprise races like congressional districts for which is Tom McClintock where we had an extraordinary Victor. Who who comes out of the national security. Sealed and who would be in the military and cuts a great profile and did very very well and kept and they kept and kept and barely over let me out in the primary Let me ask a couple of quick questions here though 1st about Dana Rohrabacher Republican congressman he's been criticized for his closeness to Russia appears to be vulnerable but he got more votes than any other candidate in this primary and there it's not quite decided yet they're still counting the votes right there 2 Democrats and Republican vying for that last spot. You know it's between 2 Democrats it's between the Democrats that the party supported and one that folks from Washington supported either one of those 2 Democrats will be strong against him. Rohrbacher has been representing that district for certain years and his percentage of the folks think about this for a 2nd his percentage of the vote that he got let me get it's like you know but it's another 2 percent it's in the low 3rd Yeah Ok that he should be embarrassed he should be he should be running for the doorways one of the comment when it comes up with that much. Of many years of experience gets 30 percent come up it's at best got it just got about 20 seconds left but let me ask because it's on the mind of some Democrats if Democrats win the House of Representatives this November do you think they should be talking about impeaching the president the United States I think that this president and States needs to be held accountable for what he says what he doesn't Elise or. Mr Bowman thanks very much thank you so much she's chairman of the California Democratic Party All right so of course there were all kinds of there was all kinds of focus on the state of California but let's broaden this out and talk about the primary results outside of California with n.p.r. Congressional reporter Kelsey snow hit Kelsey hi there are other big takeaways from all the races Well one of the big takeaways that we've been talking about week after week after week is that women are doing very well in Democratic primaries and in Republican primaries there seems to be a trend that voters want new faces and they want women and it's something that the Democrats are possibly better position to provide for them they have a lot more women candidates but that means that at the end of the day there will be more women in Congress next year what about Donald Trump president of what was his influence in these races yesterday Yeah that's another trend that we have been seeing in a lot of races in Republican districts is that it doesn't help Republicans to be against this president that was particularly obvious in Alabama with Congresswoman Martha Roby who's now been forced into a runoff after she pointedly said she wasn't going to vote for the president she spent a lot of time in recent months trying to bring herself closer to him but voters there have heard now in a runoff like I said with somebody who used to be a Democrat somebody who voted for Nancy Pelosi for speaker once so this is an odd position for her to be in. What are the issues that people are talking about I mean you you have been out talking to voters in some of these states where these primary elections were held what what drew people to the polls today yeah I was out in California one of the places I was last week talked to dozens of voters and Republicans and Democrats alike all mention health care that may have fallen out of some of the national conversation as we think of it but it is at the top of their minds something that's not at the top of their minds is Russia they just didn't bring it up as the thing that's bringing them to the polls for the most part of Russia investigation Yeah actual council of they're more worried about local issues like building bridges and if somebody is going to be able to add. Kate for him environmental issues and make sure that they you know have the tax situation that they're interested in so this this is not really been as much about these big national political conversations that we're seeing on t.v. And in other places in these already voters' minds at least yeah things could change this is a primary not the general right all right Kelsey still she covers Congress for n.p.r. Thanks Kelsey thank you. A video of a young man scaling an apartment building in Paris to save a 4 year old dangling from a balcony went viral last week the man turned out to be an African migrant without legal status in France his bravery got a meeting with the French president who granted him citizenship and a job N.P.R.'s Eleanor Beardsley reports the incident has also heated up a debate. From 3 different people they're doing this to help infertile women and children but there are big concerns about so-called 3 parent babies n.p.r. Health correspondent Rob Stein went to Kiev to find out more he is the 1st foreign journalist to be allowed inside the lab. As I set out to find this 3 parent baby clinic even my taxi driver has a hard time finding it turns out the clinic is tucked away in a side street on the outskirts of town tank yeah that means in Ukrainian October Larry's you can runs the clinic doctors you can help me. Is for me to takes me to his office to explain why he's doing something so controversial as a patient. Infertility. Clinics and doctor would see that. Stalks as their development very early stage so these are women who are trying to get pregnant and they. Choose a pregnancy network so Xuecun decided to try something risky a technique using d.n.a. From 3 different people that was invented to help women carry devastating genetic disorders have healthy babies if you have these families to achieve their own babies must be forbidden to show me how it's done Sue can sense me upstairs to the clinics embryo lab to meet the clinics the reality is. Nice to mature they switch it to. Takes a clear plastic dish out of an incubator and slides it under a big microscope I can see what he sees I don't take monitor a big brown bubble comes into focus on the screen it's what's that song. That someone right there. The procedure starts with an egg from the woman trying to have a baby that's been fertilized to make a one day old single cell embryo that's simple cell is play inside which are said. To. Want us from sperm this but. The 2nd one is much Arnold So it's the father's d.n.a. In the mother's d.n.a. Writes a thin glass needle appears on the screen. Slowly inserts the needle into the fertilized egg. And slowly why study. For one to survive and then uses the needle to extract the mother and father's d.n.a. So that's it just holds out the d.n.a. So that's the mother's d.n.a. In the father's the yeah you just sucked right out of there that does the same thing with the 2nd for allies day almost all the d.n.a. But this one it was created from another woman paid to donate eggs and. Just tried to roll forwards genetic material for a patient inside so the other one's been emptied out and that's waiting for the patients yet. Champney inserts the needle into the donors. And injects the genes of the couple trying to have a baby so you see. It's and sides so that's the mother and father's d.n.a. Is inside the donor eggs yeah it looks Ok. It will develop into a member of it worked. Some d.n.a. Transplant. Clinics mostly treating Ukrainian women but is marketing this to women anywhere charging those coming from other countries about $15000.00 so far than it directly. Doctors say they've made 4 babies this way and 3 more women are pregnant I draw such technology exists that it's going to help some people but these babies they end up with a tiny bit of d.n.a. Left over from the woman who donated the eggs that d.n.a. Provides the eggs energy and maybe what helped women finally get pregnant that's why they're called 3 parent babies but Mazar says that labels wrong says babies says they have d.n.a. From Mazar and from Father so is there a chance you could relate it to their parents small time far too often they from donor Saul it's in comparable sulf like your local your hair color color your hives and your weight and so on this children's are more lights are parents not done for some infertility doctors are welcoming this as a potentially exciting new option for some women but critics are not this is really an irresponsible kind of human experimentation Marcy Darnovsky had to genetics watchdog group called the Center for Genetics and Society 1st of all Darnovsky says no one knows if this is safe we just don't know what's going to happen to these children this is pretty troubling the procedures banned in the United States British doctors just started trying this but only to prevent genetic diseases and only one baby at a time as part of a tightly regulated research program no one else is just selling it to treat infertility like the Ukrainian clinic and that's not all that off he says what we're seeing is a fast slide down a very slippery slope toward designer babies that's because the d.n.a. That's left over in the donated eggs can be passed down by any girls to future generations so Darnovsky worries this could open the door to making babies that are genetically modified for other reasons then we could see pair. Feeling eager to give their children traits like greater strength need less sleep some people are saying that yes there are genes for i.q. And we can have smarter babies says he's just trying to help desperate families have genetically related babies and so far he says all the babies born this way appear to be perfectly healthy if. It's Morning Edition from n.p.r. News I'm Steve Inskeep And I'm Rachel Martin Facebook is under scrutiny again over the weekend the New York Times reported that the company had these data sharing partnerships with at least 60 device manufacturers including Apple and Samsung now there is news that at least 4 of those manufacturers are Chinese companies and one of them the smartphone maker while way is known to have ties with the Chinese government Facebook is defending these partnerships but now lawmakers in the u.s. Have more questions N.P.R.'s Laura Sydell is here to explain this Hey Laura take Morning All right so what kind of information are we talking about when we say Facebook was sharing information with these companies and this particular Chinese company. Facebook says in order to make its app a positive experience for people it needs to share information with the hardware makers and in this case it did allow them access to things like all your personal information if you were a user as well as all your friends information their religious and political leanings work education history relationship status Yeah that's our lives about to look at. So this company that has generated a lot of attention this is why the way it apparently has ties to the Chinese government what do we know about this company and how they might have used the improvement information yet well I want to say that this particular company was the subject of a 20 report by congressional investigators and they say that while away actually took billions of dollars of credit from the Chinese state owned policy bank and that helped Upshall expansion into Africa Europe around the world and its founder is a former engineer in the People's Liberation Army and there was actually concern in this congressional report that the company could be used to harm us telling me patience now works Ok so what does that mean for the information the Facebook thing . Well Facebook's. Is that all of the information that shared state on the phone it never went into Chinese servers and they say they know this because they worked extremely closely with this with the company they had a special engineering team working with them and they actually were about to wind down this relationship in fact all of their hardware relationships have been winding down they say that's because they made these contracts years ago when they were new to the mobile business and they don't need as much help so they don't need to be as as close and work you know and continue to have these contracts with these companies so it's Facebook basically saying there's really nothing to see here. That's what they're saying they're saying there's nothing to see here of course I guess it comes down to how much we trust the Chinese companies that they were following their contracts and we are now hearing that Congress has questions so Senator John Thune of South Dakota Republican who leads the Commerce Committee is demanding that Facebook provide them with the yells about these data partnerships also Senator Mark Warner and Virginia Democrat of Virginia also has concerns about this citing the same report and he says he's looking forward to learning more about hate Faile how Facebook ensured information about their users was not sent to Chinese servers are we going to see Mark Zuckerberg up on Capitol Hill again answering these questions well that's a good question I mean part of the reason I think people are paying attention to this is because Mark Zuckerberg was just in Congress talking about another leak in this case cameras analytic managed to get a lot of personal information through an app and a survey users took So I think people are now concerned and I should add for those who don't remember that a lot of that information might have been used to help the Trump campaign but I don't really know so so at this point yes it is possible he'll be invited back to testify and fill in the cats on the hardware invited such nice for just come sherry as those are your thoughts with us that's going to stick and he may not like that I don't like having last so N.P.R.'s Laura Sydell for us this morning thanks so much for your welcome. Kennedy My father served on that commission and then he himself disappeared in an airplane over Alaska a few years later and they're all sorts of conspiracy theories about that so I think it's just natural for members of the Kennedy family to want to explore more our last question Cokie is about how to prevent these kind of attacks My name is a live if you get and I am from Ontario California My question is how do the our nation affect our presidents or other senators in this case are protected Well says the Secret Service extended protection to major presidential and vice presidential candidates after the Robert Kennedy assassination but the whole history of presidential protection is a fascinating one we should talk about the time no well I have no doubt that we will thank you so much Cokie good to talk to you that's commentator Cokie Roberts and you can ask Cokie your questions about how politics and government work by e-mailing us it ask Cokie at npr dot org or by tweeting us with the hash tag ask. This is n.p.r. News. It's Morning Edition from n.p.r. News I'm Steve Inskeep And I'm Rachel Martin 20 years ago today a t.v. Show debuted that reverberated far beyond its setting and. Yet we're talking about sex in the city when it aired it set a new tone with its uncensored dialogue and focus on female friendships but at my age my mother was saddled with 3 kids in a drug has been you just have 3 drunk friends by choice and it's sixty's and run ever came one of H.B.O.'s 1st big successes as a network audiences tuned in to learn about sex relationships and modern dating in New York City as told by columnist Carrie Bradshaw I couldn't you know but I wonder when did being alone become the modern day equivalent of being a leper is it still possible to believe in love at 1st sight can you be friends with an ex Well here to talk about how sex in the city has endured as a cultural phenomenon we have N.P.R.'s Linda Holmes with us Hey Linda Perry I have to say just full disclosure I loved the show it does feel a little painful to go back to some of the stuff. So let's talk a little bit about that though there is an audience for the show even today why do you think it's endured well even though sex in the city felt very contemporary at the time it's dealing with a lot of really classic archetypes for a lot of people you can plug yourself into those type and you know this is a link for a while who are you Miranda and that's true even if it's a different one in different episodes or different ones at different times in your life but I think another key to this show is that they were very successful striking a balance where the emotional and relationship stories felt relatable to people but the aesthetic is all fantasy it's attracted a new generation which is kind of amazing millennial is are doing Sex And The City Well you have to remember that before there was sex in the city there were other shows like this right this is a formula that goes back to shows like Living Single and even the Golden Girls is basically and I'm not the 1st person to try to shout you know the golden. Go ahead and do the work yourself the Golden Girls is to some degree the same show as. These shows about groups of women and groups of friends but especially groups of girlfriends it's kind of a classic formula you saw it again later with girls so now that you're in this universe where everything on television lives forever whenever you want to watch it it does have a binge appeal to people who are looking for something fun to watch let's talk for a minute about how it doesn't stand the test of time some of the conversation topics that were super taboo back then to seem kind of pedestrian Now maybe that's just a larger statement about our culture how old do you when you look at it now when you watch it now what makes you cringe Well they really wanted it to be a love story about New York City but it's a New York fantasy for very specific and narrow a little bit of what New York is they're all white women most of the people that they're close to are white people you know if you're not an able bodied white straight woman you may find this show a lot harder to tap into or something that you tap into differently the character of Stanford who is Carrie's best friend Charlotte also has a gay best friend gave us friend the gay best friend the ones on the show are kind of the advice giving your fabulous gay best friend that trope a lot of television has kind of outgrown also it was totally realistically impossible for Carrie Bradshaw to afford all those clothes and shoes She's a freelance writer exam New York I do not understand the same Francis Well again that's where you get into the fantasy element of it which on the one hand doesn't really matter right now much of television is fantasy but when you're talking about something that's tapping into an idea of New York City that has no realistic notions of the economics of the city that it actually does begin to implicate different ideas about why is this the idea of Manhattan that's more sparkly for people and more it kind of appealing but not having any basis in reality thing. Silence Linda thanks Rachel N.P.R.'s Linda Holmes Well the Washington Capitals lead the Vegas Golden Knights 3 games to one of the Stanley Cup Finals the Caps have been in the n.h.l. For 43 years and have never won a championship this is the night's inaugural season so I guess they haven't ever won one either commentator Mike Pesca has been thinking how each team's fans would react to winning the Capitals owing to an aptitude in the Golden Knights studio and possibility have never won the Stanley Cup before while the players are engaged in a game of ice and pucks and hip checks their respective fans experiences aren't just opposites they're practically existing on different dimensional planes to the Knights the journey to the finals has been a laser light spectacle meets Cirque de Soleil a combined with white tigers dancing girls and maybe a couple of puppets for the Capitals this is a saga a brutal quest that is so often before ended in tragedy it has the body count of Beowulf with all the upshot of says Sophists the capital's since 1984 pushing the rock up the mountain only to have it come tumbling down. The phrase that attaches itself to fans of the capitals and teams like them is long suffering and if as our idioms would have it practice makes perfect good things come to those who wait and patience is a virtue then why wouldn't our compassion extend to the fans who have been made to suffer more long suffering Cubs fans and Sox fans and Chiefs fans and I don't know the entire city of Cleveland fans my how you've earned it oh how we are glad we aren't you but if you examine what it really means to be long suffering you'll find a lot of these fans do not suffer properly longsuffering the idea comes from the Greek word macro through media. Sometimes translated as patient long suffering means taking pressure without falling apart but I have witnessed the raging of the Bangles jets and Vikings fans and I have heard their lamb in Taishan Zz on their sports radio many seem to have fallen apart the duration of their suffering is inarguable but their forbearance is suspect now to be sure some fans suffer better than others Cubs fans were cute Browns fans held tongue in cheek for an open 16 parade this year saints and Bucs fans favored wearing paper bags over their heads but the fans of the cold weather cities of the northeast do not suffer fools or suffer silently or really suffer well at all and good on them I say they do not need our sympathy which is exactly my point if you are thinking of having the Capitals tug at your heartstrings more because their fans deserve it think again instead of root for the Knights whose fans are childlike in their glee and if they lose know that they too will inevitably embark on a horrible losing streak and their joy will Colonel into resentment and the weak minded who do not know the Greek word macro Fumio will feel a pang of sympathy. For them. At that time. The long suffering Las Vegas Golden Knights fan that they will earn their place among the a mortal's Mike Pesca author of Upon further review of the greatest what ifs in sports history It's Morning Edition from n.p.r.
