>> reporter: we are standing right now, just behind the strip club right up here, on the side of a nearby business. you can see where a bullet struck that wall, and then over there if you take a look, that parking lot is directly behind pt's centerfold show club. a spokesperson told us police are working with local businesses around here to get the reins video that may help them catch the killer. in a parking lot full of beer cans, behind this denver strip club, police responded to a shooting near hampton and galena just after sunday. >> somebody shut behind the building. >> reporter: they found a man dead on the sidewalk and covered his body with a tent. grief stricken family members showed up to see where their loved one was gunned down. officers searching for evidence placed markers where pieces of clothing still lie on the pavement. patrons cars became part of a crime scene. >> is this your vehicle? >> yes. >> reporter: others in the area >> it's really unfortunate. it's really sad. >> reporter: she arrived at 7:00 a.m. to a nearby office building for her morning class to see investigators working to figure out what led up to the deadly gunfire. >> really, could be anyone. he could be anyone one of us. i mean, it's just an eye- opener. you know, just kind of keeps us on alert. >> reporter: the victim's body was sent for autopsy with the denver coroner. as firefighters washed away what remained outside the club that was c be careful where you hang around. >> reporter: police were not able to tell us if they recovered the suspects weapon. right now police have no suspect description and they also have not released the victim's identity. live in denver, melissa garcia, cbs4 news. >> thank you. aurora police are trying to find a man missing for a week. walter rogers the man you see dementia. rogers was last seen in the 7100 block of south ukraine street last sunday. he was not reported missing until today. rogers was last seen wearing a brown baseball cap, blue jeans with black shoes. if you have information in the case, call aurora police. some people in denver's capitol hill neighborhood woke up this morning to find that their cars had been vandalized. the tires were slashed on up to four vehicles in the area of 11th and logan. right now they have no information on any suspects. stolen cars on the rise here in colorado. between 2014 and last year auto theft rose by nearly 30%. cbs4's howard nathan looked at the problem and how certain cars are being targeted most often. >> reporter: tom, this is the honda civic and also the honda accord, popular cars. they are also popular cars with thieves. at that's according to a colorado insurance group. where they tell us, the rocky mountain insurance association, thieves. some folks just don't bother to lock their car. some of that is the result of the old well, it can't happen to me. when it does, you're giving a thief access to your life. >> when they steal your car they have all your personal information, garage door opener, we had one ring of these that were using it for home invasions. they were stealing the car to break into the home. so when you're thinking about leaving your car unlocked, leaving it running unattended at -- or a spare key in the vehicle, think again. >> reporter: why this particular car? the black market wants it, they also want the parts to the car. reporting live in denver, howard nathan, cbs4 news. thank you. here's an update now on the beavercreek fire burning near the colorado wyoming border. crews are preparing for what they call critical fire weather. that means high temperatures and low humidity could spread the fans. so far nearly 37,000 acres have burned. containment is at 53%. that fire under control until mid-october. this weekend homeowners were allowed to go back to their properties. check in with dave aguilera and colorado's weather center. eighty-three right now and a few clouds out there. will we see any rain? >> i don't think we'll see rain in town but if you live in southern douglas, park county, jefferson county, you might get a little sprinkle out of the storm's firing. on doppler 4000 in a moment, get a lot of our highs today. summer really came back with a full force today. ninety in boulder, 90 fort collins, the same ninety-one in denver. grand junction out there on the western slope was at 92. doppler 4000, you can see thunderstorms popping up from down south. across the sacred crystal, the same ones, and from gunnison, all the way up into park county, thunderstorms building up here, here is denver. so you can see some clouds moving to the city but if you little isolated storm coming here, but it shouldn't move into the major area of the metro area tonight. we won't last long, those that do form at all. in fact as we look at the futurecast, the green shades down here, that's where the best chances of rain are. you can see as we go into the evening, they bubble job -- near castle rock and go away quickly. should be a dry night for most of us this evening. coming up in the week ahead we do have another cold front double swing through. and give us some 70-degree readings once again. i'll le will arrive in a few minutes. >> we'll take it. native americans in denver are protesting the controversial dakota access pipeline. that project rather would build an oil pipeline that spans 1100 miles between north dakota and illinois. members of the standing rock sioux tribe in north dakota say the pipeline could contaminate the local drinking water. supporters in denver say the u.s. government is not honoring their sacred land. >> it goes against their treaty rights. so they are fighting right now, rights. >> this is something very serious. it affects everyone, not just me, my people but generations that will follow. we are here with my family up in north dakota, south dakota, fighting for our water, they need to under the treaty rights. >> construction of the pipeline is on hold due to the ongoing protests. happening tonight, health officials in there moore county will spray for mosquitoes in fort collins. this is the second of two planned sprays to prevent the spread of west nile virus. that spraying starts at 8:30 and will be done by midnight. it comes just days after florida announced that mosquitoes are spreading the zika virus in an area of south beach. new video from cherry creek reservoir shows a truck stuck in the water at the west boat ramp. a 7-year-old and her grandfather were inside at the time but both were able to make it out. south metro firefighters say the truck lost traction and rolled into the water. a dive team was called into attached okay most of the a diver went down and placed an airbag to try to get it free. they were able to pull the vehicle out after a few hours. tonight the olympic flame will be asked and wished in rio. it's the final day of competition, closing ceremonies tonight will mark the end of the games. united states dominated the medal count, we won another gold today in men's basketball with our team beating serbia by 30 points. great britain came in second in that medal count and china in third. host country brazil 13th overall. also today, a statewide special olympics competition hundreds of athletes took part in the weekend events. cbs4's kelly worth and met some of the excited competitors. >> reporter: while the world is busy watching olympians compete in rio colorado families are supporting some very special athletes giving their all in highlands ranch. >> how did you win that gold medal? "she was standing there, she had nothing to say..." if donald trump cannot respect a gold star family, then why would anyone in america think he would respect them. developing now an innocent driver is dead after getting caught race. that crash shut down parts of federal boulevard and the i-76 on-ramp for most of saturday evening. cbs4's jeff todd reports from the scene where the state had just spent millions trying to prevent racing. >> they were racing southbound, ran the red light and at that point a northbound vehicle was making a left turn on northbound federal to westbound 76. he got t-boned. was coming. the impact sent the car spinning into a light post. the driver was the only person inside. pronounced dead at the scene. >> don't be racing down the street. >> reporter: the driver and passenger inside this new chevy sedan were sent to the hospital. it's expected the driver will be cited. the second racing car left the scene and investigators don't even have a good description of the car they are looking for. >> all we have was a chevy. >> reporter: the crash happened just after 5:00. federal was closed for hours into the night. as investigators mapped out exactly what they believe happened. >> we get these unfortunate incidents race down all these streets. somebody has to suffer. and a family. >> that was jeff todd reporting. last summer, cdot completed a $2 million project to install street lights along a 15 block stretch of federal to combat the street racing problem. the blue cut wildfire burning outside los angeles, now more than 50 square miles, fire has destroyed 300 buildings. most of the evacuees have been allowed to return home. no one has been hurt. dave we've got awfully dry conditions here but we certainly couldn't complain about today. >> no. beautiful day around here. we warmed up a little over yesterday but still, all things considered a real pretty summerlike day. we do have thunderstorms firing up. if you look at doppler 4000, we have a south southeasterly flow coming in here, about ousted -- altitude, more air comi where the two are meeting here, douglas county and jefferson county, starting to see thunderstorms fire up just outside of west creek and south of deckers. so those could have pockets of heavy rain. don't think those will move into the city but they could cause some problems down there in the mountainous areas. here in southern colorado big thunderstorms firing up as moisture tries to make it up from new mexico. the san luis valley, a few thunderstorms. nothing severe has popped up yet but we'll watch for that. yesterday a lot of the storms had some pockets of heavy rain and hail going on. so here's what's happening here, high pressure over the central part of the nation, that cool air that has been diving into texas, now is mixing up with moisture that's coming up. at the same time, high pressure coming in from the west coast and that's what's keeping the northern part of colorado up into wyoming fairly dry. drier air is meeting up with the moisture and suppressing it or pushing it down. cold front up here, just off the coast of the pacific northwest, a midweek cooldown for us. tuesday night and wednesday, when that will swing through and it will bring back 70s. hot today, 91 officially at the airport, 89 downtown, morning lows were 51 and 52. out there right now, 87 in the city, 87 his normal high this time of year. east southeast wind at 11 miles per hour. humidity fairly dry at 13. is coming in at 85. so here's the forecast tonight, storms move out here once again. tomorrow mostly sunny to start things off. tomorrow, better chance of seeing storms in the mountains, some of those may move into the eastern plains so we have a slight chance for storms for us and western colorado you may see some showers linger all the way into the evening tomorrow night. with a lot of moisture coming up your way. overnight, in the 50s and 40s in the mountains, 50s and 60s little bit warmer still. eightys and a few more 90s get in the picture here, 70s in the mountains and cooler out west. grand junction 82. partly cloudy early, close to 60 for the overnight low. tomorrow mostly sunny, slight chance 10% chance or less and 90 degrees for the high tomorrow and looking ahead, isolated storms on tuesday and 85, cold front comes through and gets us in the mid-70s on wednesday and thursday, a little better chance of rain well. so in the week ahead, we got a little summer, a little fall weather. mixed together. >> 70s in august. we'll take that. >> it's a good mix. coming up, why the broncos quar,,,, ? >> reporter: top officials say donald trump is back on track after a series of controversies. >> he's shown maturity, i think he's growing in his role. he's a person who's never run for office. >> reporter: polls tell the talef hillary clinton is leaving trump nationally by at least five points. a cbs news battleground tracker poll shows clinton has extended her lead in ohio to six points. improving two points since july. in iowa the candidates are even at 40% apiece. the only state with recent polling that doesn't show clinton leading. trump's new campaign manager kellyanne conway says voters are seeing a more focused candidate. >> this was the best week so far in the trump campaign. mostly because he's able to be made is on substance. >> reporter: clinton's team disagreed. >> we are not seeing a pivot. donald trump said this was not a pivot. >> reporter: trump announced his first ad by, in terms of raising money clinton is forehead raking in a total of $326 million since 2015. more than twice of what trump has brought in. clinton spent the weekend fundraising. and will hold more finance events monday in california. wendy gillett, cbs news, new york. trump's team members say they are still discussing whether they'll accept a debate schedule. clinton's team says it's time to agree to a schedule and then move on. just into our newsroom, democratic vice presidential candidate tim kaine will be in colorado on tuesday. hillary clinton's campaign website confirmed that visit today. kane will head to lakewood for a roundtable discussion with leaders in small-business. we'll have all the details on lochte saga. u.s. olympic committee says further actions coming after lochte and other american swimmers lied about being robbed in rio. that scandal threatened to overshadow a very successful olympics for the united states. lochte is a story about being held up was disputed by brazilian police. lochte later apologized for over exaggerating. the ceo of the olympic committee says lochte's behavior hurt the host country brazil. >> they let down our athletes, and they really let down our hosts in rio who did such a wonderful job. and we feel very badly about that. i think we've ended up in the right place. in terms of being able to shine a light, on what happened there. and we are going to have further action on this when we get back to the united states. >> no word yet on what exactly that further action will involve. a woman who received hundreds of units of blood got the chance to thank the people cassidy smith needed the blood after having an emergency c- section. suzanne mccarroll shows us cassidy isn't the only one giving thanks. >> one, two, three, jump. >> reporter: cassidy smith and her daughter savor their time together. >> what is the best thing about your mother?
