But some say the governors deadline of january firrt to privatize the program is too agressive. The 560thousand iowans who rely on medicaid just received these packets in the mail asking them to choose a new care provider. They can choose from four outofstate companies amerigroup, wellcare, unitedhealthc are and amerihealth. But some say they dont know whether their curnt doctors and hospitals have contracts with any of these companies. When weve contacted largerr Health Care Systems in the state, des moines metro hospitals, theyve indicated they havent signed contracts with any of the mcos. The state says each of e four companies have signed contracts with between 7 percent and 37 percent of Healthcare Providers that serve medicaid patients in iowa. Cancer patients participating in clinicaa trials are helping reseaahers get closer to preventing and curing cancer. The search for a cure is the focus for a team of university of iowa doctors. The iowa cancer registry says close to 16 thousandnd900 iowans had cancer during the last count in 2012. That was down from the year before when around 17 thousand 400 iowans had cancer. Kcrg tv nines bradyysmith shows how Clinical Trials are now giving more hope to anyone battling cancer. Turn back the clock about 6 years, and life wasnt always this happy for jodie grundy. 17 39 52 i just had this cough that wouldnt go away. Treated for colds. Then eventually went back and was strep, and thought i possibly had tb, because it had gone gn so many months. An xray revealed spots on her lungs. It wass cancer. Her doctors told her she wasnt a candidate for surgery, and her chance of survival was low. 21 24 29 the specialist i saw in mayo said even with treatment, you have a 5 percent chance. Jodie had two options undergo regular chemotherapy and radiation, or take part in a clinical trial. Jodies doctor, deb wilbur, says she made the generous decision of enrolling in the experimental trial. 4 31 43 they were looking at new ways to treat that using different schedulele of radiation, as well as a new medication that had not previously been tried in lung cancer. Jodie had one thought going in 24 44 53 even if this doesnt work, you know, youre lping research and youre helping other people. Its thhse clinic trials, doctor wilbuusays is the best chance for a cure. 10 40 46 the first person whos going to be cured of a cancer, that up until that date was incurable, is goong to be on a clinical cure is thhfocus of a team of doctors at the university of iowa hospitals and clinics. 34 37 40 the more we study cancer, i think the more complex its becoming. Dr. Sue odorisio says the complexities of cancer means finding a cure isnt easy. She admits most of her teams patients wontt end uucancerfree. 41 59 05 our cure rate is probably about 5 percent. Instead, doctors focus on improving quality of life as 75percent of patients at least respond to treatment. Researchers say highly personalized treatments are the most effective. Dr. Odorisio is using a method called targeted medicine to treat rare Neuroendocrine Tumors. 30 10 1919we know that Neuroendocrine Tumors grow rather slowly. They dont respond well to normal chemotherapy drugs. Research scientist molly martin combines cancerfighting drugs with a radioactive isotope that fights the tumors. With is yttrium90 dotatoc. A single dose takes about 3 and a half hours to assemble and then it goes to the patient immediately. 30 44 52 we can send this radioactive drug straight to the tumor, and use localized radiation therapy. That means fewer negative side effects on the liver and bones, organs the tumors usualllshow up in. But that treatment is costly and slow. 31 56 59 right now we can only treat one to two patients a week. And dr. Yusuf menn has to make sure every dose is compatible with every person. 44 14 24 if we think that the patient is unlkely to respond to the treatment based on the diagnostic test, then we do not administer the therapeutic drug. While a cure remains elusive, it is Success Stories that encourage researchers. 33 40 47 heewas no longee able e o walk without a lot of pain. He came back to us in six weeks, and he had been hiking in colorado. Prevention may be the ultimate cure. Stopping painful tumors before they start. 343444 53 ultimately, i think we all believe being able to prevent cancer is going to be much better than being able to cure it. In the meantime, there will be Success Stories like jodies, which give hope to those still in the fight. 20 40 43 i was hopeful. You know, i think i never gave up hope. 6 years aater her diagnosis, shes cancer free. Brady smith, kcrg tv9 news. This years average american a little more. Cording to the farm bureau. The cost of a meal for ten is 50 dollars and 11 cents. 70 cents more than last year. But before you get worried about that breaking the bank. That extra cost is primarily because of the Avian Influenza earlier this year. While Retail Prices seem to have stabilized. Those go into turkey processing. The thanksgiving turkey is most likely to come from minnesota or missouri. The Iowa Turkey Federation says the price of thanksgiving is still good. The average thanksgiving meal is still an awesome value if you look when they do that Market Basket survey, i still think it comes out to around fivesix dollars per person. I think youre pretty hard stretcheddo even go to aafast Food Restaurant and have a meal for that low of a cost. The markets are now closed for the thanksgiving holiday. But before they closed yesterday. I talked to analyst mike seery to see what the week looked like. The grain markets, i was short corn, soybeans and rough rice, i got out of corn yesterday because i was in the december contract. I probably wont be n corn for a little while. People driving through North Liberty could see some changes in the near future. The city is considering renaming the portion of highway 965 that runs through town. Many businesses sit along that stretch of the highway, from north of 230th street northeast to around forevergreen road. Kcrgtv9s Jill Kasparie tell us the city wants to give people something they can identify with. Car nats highway 965 is typically bustling with activity. Its certainly a key piece of infrastructure, its certainly a big part of what North Liberty has for a business district. Nats air efex is one business with a highway 965 address. Inside theyre building and painting vehicles and more. I talk to people, customers come from des moines and they can come right off here, off the interstate and hit 965 no problem. Changing the highways name . As long as people can still find the businesses, im okay with it. North liberty city leaders say they still need to identify the process they want to use in order to move forward. Theres always been an interest in sort of giving North Liberty a little bit more of its own identity and particularly what was an old rural highway through town to give it a little bit more identity. Down the road from North Liberty, coralville has changed roads names a few times in the past couple of decades highway 965 became coral ridge avenue and 1st avenue became hayden fry way. Its a very usual thing to change a name because changing names creates address issues and those kinds of publicity, marketing type of things, especially if there are commercial units there. Coralvilles city administrator says the city also contacted google. So to have it be able to show up officially in google is probably the most important thing, so people can locate where you are talking about. North liberty plans to get started with the name changing process in coming months. Kind of identity things are important to a growing town like North Liberty tv9s Jill Kasparie with that report. North liberty says its not sure of the cost yet, but the majority of it would come from new signage. The city says 965 will still exist, itll just have a local name too. Its planning to take suggestions for names. Dubuques mayor is making a trip across the atlantic, heading to paris next week. But he wont talk about International Safety or terrorist groups. Right now a volunteer keeps watch over the men during the overnight hours. But directors say they only have volunteers for that position and he puts almost 70 each week. I think it puts our whole program in jeopardy. Because if anything were to happen to him, what would we do . Almost home says they could also use more volunteers to staff the early evening hours. But uni pulled away in the second half for the 8363 win. Congrats to jake on win number 200. Lets talk some football. The hawkeyes are 1 1 2 point favorites over nebraska friday. Heres more with coach ferentz. It seems like we say every week but you are playing a hot Football Team this week. It does seem like it. I guess there are a lot of good teams in the big 10 this year nebraska had some near misses early in the season but they have good players and coaching staff. They are meshing now their last two outings they have played very well so it will be another challenge. How do you defend Tommy Armstrong he gets out of the pocket how will you defend that . Well hopefully we can keep him in the pocket when he does get outside it is a bad deal it puts a lot of stress on your defense and if you do come out of coverage he is going to hit the open guy. He is veteran Football Player and it all starts their if we have chance we have to some how contain him a little bit. Nathan bazata and cole fisher going back to their home state. Coles dad even played for nebraska. Do you talk to them before hand to try to contain their emotions or is that a good thing . I will probably mention something it is like senior day you want the guys to experience the emotions but at the same time you have to put those aside and get back to what you are trying to accomplish. C. J. Told me he wants to get in the final four do you look at it like that . That is what november football is like in my mind. Every game is about positioning whether it is Conference Race or beyond that. We did accomplish getting to indianapolis that was goal number one and with every win Better Things come. They become more difficult this time of year they are tough to come by but there is a playoff mentality. You dont believe in the Sports Illustrated jinx right . I will find evidence that will disprove it. This team has done a lot of great things broken records so maybe we can knock out the Sports Illustrated jinx too. Dont forget you can watch the iowanebraska game right here on kcrg tv9 at 2 30 friday. Nebraska coach mike riley met the media this week and a lot of his attention for this game is aimed right at iowa quarterback c. J. Beathard. He has only thrown three interceptions so he does not hurt the team and he manages things very well. And the other thing he gives them is when it is not good wether something is broken down wether protection he cant find anybody he moves well enough to extend the play and than hurt you. That is what we have to permit. So one of the big issues in this game is containment of the quarterback. Sot 29 oc containment of the quarterback and finally that is kennedy allstate tight end shaun beyer wearing a hawkeye shirt with his lovely girlfriend jade irish. Shaun verbally committed to iowa today. He had an offer from nebraska. But he is gonna be a hawkeye. Heres a penny just for you. Thats no penny. Thats a galaxy s 6 at u. S. Cellular on black friday. Whoa, thanks, grandma youre welcome. You can also get an lg g4 or an lg g pad f 8. 0 with that penny. Nice isnt that just delightful .
