And Johnson County auditor Travis Weipert says the issue his office is running into is hes hearing about writein candidates. Pe ople who arent officially on the ballot. Wanting to be poll watchers themselves. Weipert says that raised concern among candidates who are on the ballot, and some voters. He checked with the secretary of states office, and it is legal for writein candidates to be poll watchers. It is however illegal for writein candidates to have pollwatchers go on their behalf. That means weipert will need to have people from his office stopping by precincts in iowa city and especially university heights, where there are several writein candidates, to make sure state laws are being followed. 53 18 34 the big thing is, youve got to make sure that theyre not wearing any campaign material, theyre not wearing any tshirts, theyre not telling people how to vote, theyre not interacting with the voters.
