Voters rejected a 10 Million Dollar bond vote to build a new Elementary School. It would have replaced current elementary buildings in riverside and ainsworth. The superintenden t says while the plan would have cut staff, it would have saved the district up to 250 thousand dollars a year. Kcrgtv9s mark carlson is live in our iowa city newsroom. Mark, there have to be a lot of concerns in the highland district about these cuts. Yes, as you noted they have to cut halfofa Million Dollars before the start of next school year. And that could mean a reduction in teachers, administrators even closing a school. My biggest fear is that the district is going to go under, its going to completely close, that is my biggest fear. Abby sojka has two kids in the Highland School district. For now. Next year shes pulling them and open enrolling in a Neighboring School District in part because of the Financial Outlook at highland. I think there is a lot of money being spent where it doesnt such as the Athletic Department when we are severely lacking in other areas. Next year enrollment is projected to be down by 35 students in the district. Thats another reason why district leaders say theyre being forced to look at cuts that may include closing this Elementary School in ainsworth. When i first came to the district ainsworth had 125 students in it, right now were at 78, we have a preschool class of 11, a kindergarten class of 4, a First Grade Class of 10. Superintendent chris armsrtong says enrollment tends to fluctuate in the district. And now is not a good time for a down year. I never thought id be in a position that wed have to look at this big of a number to cut, unfortunately with the lack in state funding and then that drop in students it has forced our hand, we have to look at making significant cuts in order to stay financially viable. As for sojka she says even with her kids out of the district next year, shes holding out hope that better days lay ahead. I live here i live in this community, i never want to see a school close, and i would love to keep my children im not willing to sacrifice my children. District leaders will meet to make some final decisions on cuts at a meeting on march 14. In iowa city, mark carlson, kcrg tv nine news.
