That may mean bringing another bond issue to voters for additions to the the College CommunitySchool District in cedar rapids has handled a growing student population for years. But what happens when enrollment grows faster than anyone expected . College community might need to answer that in the coming months because of the latest enrollment figures. School leaders projected 90 new students in the district this fall. But they ended up with 146. In 2002, the district had a total of 35hundred students. Today, that number has grown to more than 56 hundred to the campus on the southern edge of cedar rapids. College community is usually in the top ten of the states Fastest GrowingSchool Districts. Kcrgtv9s Dave Franzman is live outside Prairie High School tonight. Dave, the district has handled growth for ears. Are the latest enrollment numbers any different . Bruce, only in the sense that fasterthanexpected growth may mean speeding up the districts building plans. For instance, as a rule of thumb College Community has seen either a new school or a major expansion every five to six years. But more growth may mean convincing voters to do more and do it sooner. One sign of the space crunch at the high school is visible when the class change and lunch lines converge. Sot nat some prairie students call this the Bermuda Triangle because you can get lost for a minute or two just trying to make your way through the crowd. The high school was sized to hold a thousand students. 11hundred attend now. And that number could hit 12hundred next year. Youve got four minutes to get from class to class and sometimes it doesnt feel like its enough trying to get across the school the incipal says slight overcrowding isnt a huge issue now but if above expected Growth Continues iiwill be a future problem. Sot nat for instance, the choir room used to hold everyone. Now theres three sections so everybody can fit 100. But the band has 180 members. And theres now a shortage of science rooms for students which means more juggling and maybe portable classrooms. Potentially, we dont have the space to put kids anymore and unfortunately that means kids walking outside to get to class. In the winter that can be fairly difficult sometimes. Voters said no last year to a 49Million Dollar bond issue that would have added space. But if growth is faster than expected, the district may ask again soon. I focus on the financial side of things as well and its never going to be cheaper than it is right now College Community superintendent john speer says you have to plan ahead to handle a growing number of students. Its not official yet, but hes thinking about asking the school board to go to voters with another High School Expansion bond vote this february. Live in cedar rapids, Dave Franzman kcrg tv9 news. Heres more on the game with coach ferentz. In the penn state game maryland was playing with their hair on fire taking chances blitzing. They played really well on defense penn state completed some long pass but their percentages werent very good. So we dont know what to expect quite frankly because it is a departure from what they normally do. Their quarterback is a state wrestling champ is not afraid to run plays like he is a wrestler he is going to be tough to defense isnt he . A little bit of joe capp throwback i am going to throw that name out their but he is just a tough hardnosed guy he throws the ball pretty well but he is a dangerous thrower and they other skilled players that are good too so pose a lot of problems for you offensively. Will likely grew up in belle glade florida brad banks hometown chases rabitts. He had pick six against you he is tough to defend and now he is playing some offense. They have done a good job of utilizizig on offense and he is good on defense and had the big play against last year and we think he is as good a punt returner as anybody in the country. Do you worry about losing some rythem in the bye week . No it was more important for our team to get some rest to regroup we have had good preperation for this week our guys kicked back nto game week on sunday and all of our focus has been getting ready for maryland. Akrum is coming off a big game you have lashun back how do you handle it do you go with the hht getting him back is going to help our Football Team having jordan out. Watching tv it is amazing how many people have you going undefeated without even batting an eye. What did you tell your team . During the early part of the bye week we encouraged our guys to think big. A lot of talk out their and that is fine. We encouraged to think big and then reign them back in. I think we realize the best thing we can do is take care of things week by week and right now all that matters is playing well this saturday and we just have to get ready for this ball game and if we do a great job the results will take care of themselves.
