Help is on the way in the fight against Islamic State in the syrian city of kobani. Kurdish soldiers have entered turkey and are making their way to the border area to join the fight against the jihadists. Sources say about 150 well armed and trained fighters are expected to arrive later tonight to help the relief effort. Well have more from just outside kobani on the turkish side of the border. First, heres this report. Freshwater is in short supply for the few that remain in kobani, besieged by Islamic State militants for more than a month. These images filmed exclusively for Deutsche Welle are some of the first to exclusively show the damage inside the city. We have neither food nor water. Whatever we get we pick up at the Turkish Border because of the heavy shelling. For the past week, we have heard peshmurga fighters are on their way. We do not know what is happening. Kobani needs heavy weapons against these mercenaries. The call for reinforcements now appears to have been answered. On tuesday, a convoy carrying around 150 kurdish fighters set off for the battle torrent syrian town. So far, Kurdish Forces have withstood Islamic States attacks, despite aging weaponry and a shortage of ammunition. They say they will fight to the death. We are here to protect the civilians in the city and this country. We will not allow the terrorists to march into this city. We will defend it to the last person. We will not be forced out, and we will not be swayed from our mission to defend the courage is people. I. S. Only bombs civilians, the innocent, but that will only steal our resolve. Meanwhile, warplanes continue to bomb Islamic State positions with sustained bombardment. Kurdish fighters help air support an additional Ground Forces will tip the battle and there avery. Although much of kobani is in the hand of jihadists, kurds believe they can gain the upper hand. Our correspondent is just across the border in turkey. What is the military situation in kobani right now . The situation on the ground is relatively calm, but that does not mean there was no fighting at all. We saw several explosions today. They attacked military cars of the Islamic State, which led to the deaths of 14 of their fighters. Most of the battles at the moment take place in the east of kobani. From this direction, the Islamic State brings in new weapons and fighters. Over the next few hours, defenders are about to get reinforcements from those pe shmurga fighters. To people think this will help turn the tide . They tell me they are more than happy to get the support, but for them, more important than the writers than the fighters are the heavy weapons they are bringing in. I told them we have enough people to defend the city, but we are in urgent need of heavy weapons like artillery and machine guns. Now, theres a very big hope this will give the kurdish fighters the momentum which could maybe help to finally stop the advance of the people. With winter setting in right now, what is the humanitarian situation like . There are big efforts from the kurdish side to accommodate all the refugees. Until now, more than 180,000 people have left kobani, and most of them are still here in the region there the border, and a lot of those people still sleep in mosques, or in one of the five refugee camps, which have been quickly set up. Those camps can accommodate 15,000 people, but most of the tense there have no electricity, no heating, and tonight, we are already getting very cold. Today, i met with the mayor of the city behind the border, and she told me they are desperately in need of International Help. She said at this point, it comes from communities, and they did not get International Help so far. As kobani awaits reinforcements over the next couple of hours. The number of displaced people is just absolutely staggering. The fighting in syria has made refugees one fourth of the population, 6 Million People. Recommend of a berlin conference on syria today where representatives from about 40 countries promised that the world would not forget the refugees. Syrias neighbors say they are no longer able to deal with the influx of people from the country. Lebanon, turkey, iraq, jordan have all taken in more than a million syrians since the start of the civil war in 2011. Representatives from 40 states and organizations attended the berlin conference. It was organized by germany to mobilize support for the millions of syrians who have been affected by the civil war in their country. After talks, the German Foreign minister promised more help to syrias neighbors who say they can no longer cope with the huge influx of refugees. We are not changing our position. Of course we share responsibility to help these refugees, but it is a broadening of our position. Because well be channeling more support towards the countries and communities next to syria who are taking in refugees. The United Nations estimates that syria possible war has displaced about 6 Million People within the country. An estimated 3 million have fled to neighboring countries. About 1. 1 million are now in turkey. Hundreds of thousands more are in iraq, jordan, and egypt, but the situation is especially serious in lebanon, which has also taken in more than one Million People. That is a number equivalent to a quarter of its population. The lebanese Prime Minister appealed to the conference for help. Lebanon, as it has been recognized by all, is beyond its absorption capacity and urgently needs other countries to share its burden. Winter is approaching, making the situation even more dire for the refugees living in the camps beyond syrias borders. As we just heard, jordan says its resources to cope with the hundreds of thousands of Syrian Refugees in that country are running out. Most refugees have ended up in sprawling caps, which were unprepared for the influx. Our reporter visited one camp and sent us this story. In the middle of the jordanian desert, row upon row of containers housing 13,000 Syrian Refugees. This woman is named syria. She and her five children are among the refugees. They fled their home after more than three years of civil war. We fled the Islamic State. The assad regime spared us, but i. S. Terrified us and our children. Were it not for them, we would have stayed home and barricaded ourselves in, but we had to leave because of i. S. The family comes from eastern syria. Although they have found safety here, they are worried about relatives who did not make it across the border before it was closed. It is vital that they are lead over the border. Dear god, i hope i will be able to go home one day. Everything is better in syria. The earth is fertile there. Jordan has decades of experience taking in mass numbers of refugees, but with more than half a million syrians already there, tensions are rising. Many say they are pushing up prices and rents. This teacher and activist does what she can to raise awareness of the plight of refugees. Today, she is taking clothes to a syrian family. She says there are misunderstandings on both sides. Both jordanians and syrians are upset. Jordanians ask why they have to look after the refugees. Syrians say they are getting a lot of help because of them, but we see none of it. This family, like many others, is preparing for a long stay in jordan. The challenge now is for syrians and jordanians to learn to live side by side. He said he targeted young boys who were vulnerable. He spoke to 14 15 year old boys. He told them their fathers were not integrated, so they were not worth anything, not to islam, not to the people, not to the country. He said they were worthless. He tried to raise the alarm, but belgian authorities ignored him. Should they have stepped in . The mayor is not so sure. While at knowledge and the dangers, at a rally of christians and muslims, he warned against inciting panic. We have to defend our democracy, and you can only defend them with democratic tools, so using undemocratic tools to fight against undemocratic groups is giving them already the victory. There have been recent shows of solidarity between muslim and Christian Communities across belgium. Parents are united in their concern for their children. We have to be more open. Muslims have to reach out. We have to open our mosques to everyone, eat together, discuss things together. That can change a lot. The prosecution is demanding 15 to 20 years in jail for him. The trial is already stoking the debate on how belgium should deal with radical islamists. More world news now, and russia says it will recognize the results of ukraines parliamentary elections. The Russian Foreign minister gave the assurance in a tv interview following sundays polls. He said he hoped for a constructive government in kiev that would fulfill the minsk hes agreements with the separatist east the minsk peace agreements. Im sure we will have people to talk to in the parliament and the government, mostly because one of the leading forces in parliament will be the block of petro poroshenko. He is our partner, our president partner in reaching the minsk peace agreements. As you know, these agreements were reached with assistance from russia and the os he osce its not only about russia and ukraine but also about the eu. Lets go to our correspondent who joins us from moscow. Russia says it will accept both the results of the ukraines election last week and that of the separatist these coming up on sunday. Why is moscow taking this particular line . I think because the view from the kremlin is an unstable refrain with an unstable east where russia has significant influence is to the benefit of the kremlin. That is the way to maintain instability, and that means in the kremlins view, the way to maintain a hold on ukrainian politics, which seems to be slipping away from moscos creek. It i a way to create a permanent instability element. Lets talk about that separatist area. The outcome on sunday will almost certainly be a resounding endorsement of the prorussian parties. What difference will this vote make in the end . In the end, that will contribute to the moscow position, which will be telling kiev that it has to talk to the people who are now as legitimate as their rival is. In a sense, it is an attempt to create an alternative legitimacy for the separatist forces in the east. There is no doubt that the crane has ukraine has a legitimate president and now a legitimate parliament. All the separatist leaders came essentially out of nowhere, so it is an attempt to create a supplemental legitimacy that will do with her ability to negotiate on behalf of eastern ukraine. Russia being and essence presenting itself as part of the solution while in fact playing on one side. We look forward to the elections on sunday in the separatist east of ukraine.
