Long long long season but it's never too early to be excited about a team that got the best record in Major League Baseball we're excited to welcome Jeff Blow who used to be an Astro to different stance as well as a bunch of other major league teams an infielder is now part of Route sports southwest as the analyst for Astros games on t.v. And Jeff joining us from Minneapolis after another victory on the road you know it's crazy because I talk to Major League Baseball players Jeff and actually athletes in other sports sometimes they will tell me they prefer to be on the road as opposed to being at home despite the fans simply because it's a it's easier to focus that the easier to concentrate the Astros' are so good away from home what's their secret. It's a good question and thank you have for having me on and. A lot of people will say yeah on cooking it's going to be home but the routine is a little bit different for guys at home especially if they've got families who sailed who has got a brand new daughter and I'm not using them as an excuse but it is just a little bit different when you're at home because the routines different you might be up a little bit earlier entertaining some family was in town or you might be up early to get a chance to see your kids much like I do I was taking the kids to school and trying to pick them up and be a be a dad as often as I could when I was playing but on the road basically all your focus is put on playing a game you know they have a traveling secretary to get tells you where to be when to be buses or picking you up there's really nothing to do and all that and obviously the road clubhouses are very good they handle these guys great but to do with the asters are doing you've got to be comfortable number one but you've got to be highly talented and who goes out to the lead the way getting well over 400 on the road the last 2 years and then getting some ball good bullpen pitching it helps out a ton too but these guys are electric right now I was actually listening to the radio call of the Astros twins the last few innings and the word boring was mentioned about. The consistency how is it that he manages to stay so consistent and not just the theory then he's done this now for several years. I don't know I know he's a he's a super He's a brilliant pure hitter and I know that he makes adjustments from pitch to pitch just in having the opportunity to watch him over the last 5 years but I really think that he puts it upon himself to be one of those guys that goes out and proves his leadership on a nightly basis he's had to do with the last 4 years this year is a little bit different because the lineup is so so darn deep that he can have a little bit of a struggle or have an over 3 nights and other guys will pick him up but when he's going well and when he's on the road it seems to step it up a notch and he's hitting over 700 in Target Field in his career just to give you an idea of how good he can be and how unbelievable he can be but he makes judgments he puts the barrel on the ball he's a lot of fun to watch but he's always that guy that shows up on a nightly basis and basically you know you have to peel him out of the lineup to give him days off I saw a quote from Carlos Correll following the the huge 8th inning comeback on Memorial Day in which he said this team is just having fun or having a good time no it's always more fun when you're winning what evidence do you see of that with this particular group of guys. Well we're lucky we get to be around it on a daily basis and if you play baseball long enough if you hang around baseball long enough and you get to be on the field and you get to wander through some of these clubhouses 'd you get a chance to see what chemistry really is and it's nothing you can really put a number to it's something that just happens and winning is going to help the chemistry a little bit it's going to make. The not so funny guys a little bit funnier a little more bearable around. Watching what happened last night. Every time a guy crossed home plate there was belief and as soon as George bring across home plate with the go ahead run you saw an energy explode out of the dugout in the way they brace each other and I think that you really get it you get an idea of in watching these guys how there are 24 guys in that box with every guy that goes up to the plate it's these guys are on an island there's not an expectation on who's able to buy a car was correct. Josh Reddick and these guys to go out there and dominate the game they're not being forced to have All-Star nights every single night because they've got a line up it's so deep and they've changed their approach their high contact team now we saw what they did to today just basically pounded him into submission until he had to get knocked out of the game in the 5th inning and then they stuck it to the bullpen again and that's what they've been doing consistently throughout the course of the season but in saying that you watch a baseball you see something that you don't see all the time what we saw last night I literally had no words in my job as a color analyst I couldn't explain it because I couldn't believe it and not to mention the kind of confidence that gives you thinking Ok we had it once before we can do it again. Yeah it's ridiculous every guys chomping at the bit there's got to be a brawl at the bat record to get into office to get in the light of the. After hours of baby lords here on c.b.s. Play by play crew there are a bunch of young guys on this team not that they aren't already great stars in their own right we've talked about today and Correia guys who started really young the core of that Houston road tear that he used in roster I should say but there are also some guys that are character guys older guys who've been around the block like a Carlos Beltran Brian McKay and how much does that balance matter when you're talking about the grind of 162 game season but I think when you said that last part the grind of 162 game season is you know when you're young you're invigorated you're you're excited to be in the big leagues you're use that energy to get you through some of these long seasons and I think we sit we've seen that in the past with these guys but we play 162 games. There's going to be some peaks and valleys and there's going to be some focus that gets lost a little bit but up until this point. The asses have been very focused on their at bats and I think that that's the reason why the callers Bill Trons the Brian McCann's and the Josh rather have come on this ball club and I think asses have done a good job there hyper analytical but I think they took into account that they needed somebody in that clubhouse to help these guys kind of growing through that season so to speak but they also needed guys they could be in that were successful and have the experience teaches kids how to go out have a good. Good at that and they're starting to see that now but you can't underestimate in a bigly clubhouse when you have that much talent to be able to have those tutors out there in those Beltran who's on the position player side works well with the left you know guys you know playing the w.b.c. With Carlos Correll But Brian McCann actually is one for me that doesn't get talked about enough because he does such a good job with the bat he's got 9 years of 20 plus home runs would be great but what he's done behind on plate is bringing Dallas Tycho back into form and he's really done a wonderful job coming down Lance but colors and helping him grow up a little bit quicker too because he's starting to mix in that change up a little bit more he recognizes situations and he actually challenges guys in the middle of the games which is fun to see you retired just 5 years ago bridge to a good stretch there where this role of analytics has now become so important in Major League Baseball and actually across the board in the rest of professional sports where do you fall on how how teams should use analytics. You know it's funny we use them for entertainment I think they're highly entertaining. And they are you know and it helps me if you know if I see something which is great for me and I think that is a lot of fun for me is that I get to still watch the game with the intent and the eye of being a guy that sitting in the dugout watching these games go on but now I get to pull myself out and see something and back it up with some of the numbers or dig on some of these numbers and try and use them to tell a little bit of story which is fun for me so I think that they're important. I think that they're more fantasy baseball or more contract oriented I think that they they look good when you go to the arbitration table and they create arguments for or against a certain number and a guy but it's hard to project some of these things and I think that's where teams with a lot of the stuff that we don't get to see is that's what a lot of teams are doing is trying to figure out a way to project some of these numbers onto guys to see if they fit in the organization as far as draft or if you can go out and look at a guy across a cross the way and maybe see if you can trade for him I think they're a big part of the baseball I think they have a place in baseball but I also think that you really have to walk that fine line and incorporate a lot of baseball mentality or you know that I test so to speak because there is a lot of that in that baseball intellect that you can't put a number on and a heart to the heart and the desire and human beings that they can all be measured by numbers for sure all right so Jeff you are a former major leaguer as we just talked about and the big story in the majors right now is this brouhaha between Bryce Harper and Hunter Strickland and interestingly enough the role or lack there of the catcher Buster Posey So he says I found out that we were going to have you on the show I would I have to admit I was chomping at the bit because I want to hear from inside of a major league baseball players brain what's your reaction to Buster hanging back eventually getting out there to where the brawl is happening but not stepping in front of Bryce Harper before he got to Hunter Strickland. That whole situation is interesting I mean we could talk for hours about you know the mentality of the pitcher price Harper but Buster Posey is definitely the $1.00 that sticks out he's supposedly the team captain of the San Francisco Giants and you would expect him to have the back of everybody in that clubhouse which I'm sure he does but there's got to be an explanation for why you stood there because I've seen plenty of situations I've done teams where there's been a situation where we've thrown at guys and the catcher knows we're throwing at people the catcher stands up and either tackles the guy or gets in front and keeps him from getting out to his pitcher and just knowing in my experience and what I've done in my career and seen in my career and talking to a lot of players when the catcher sits back that's your 1st line of defense between the pitcher and. The guy who's charging the mound So Buster Posey and this is just my opinion my professional so-called opinion and Buster Posey was going to let Strickland wear that he was going to let him go out there there may have been a conversation between Strickland Posey that said go ahead let him go but for me to watch him just sit there and not even move a muscle while Bryce Harper goes out there thrown his helmet all over the place and then it you know chaos ensues kind of tells me a little bit that Buster Posey was on the side of you know what you're going to hit him you're going to deal with the consequences and does that does that create an issue then with teammates it can but I think you know exactly who your friends and your are right now. And it's a long season too it's all I can get away from each other you're stuck together for months and months in months. Well you just hope it creates a conversation between these guys make an Ira let out and say hey next time don't be a bonehead and a guy for something that happened 3 or 4 years ago. So in other words this is like a family whether you believe that what they're doing is right whether you are on their side you still have to be on their side you still have to be part of whatever thought but I doubt that.
