If you haven't hiked with your kids there are memories that are just waiting to be made and remembered for years to come Here's some suggestions and tips on how to make hiking with kids more fun less strenuous if your children are young you could carry an infant in a baby backpack and hike as far as you can using a stroller is fine on a paved walkway such as the Hammond trail which runs from Clam Beach to the arcade a bottom's but for trails in the forest along the beach even strollers designed for runners really aren't made to go on these trails with very young children don't try to push the distance remember that they're just discovering things for the 1st time in their lives so seeing a frog on the side of a creek or ants walking across the trail may be intriguing enough for them to explore for more time than you would regularly spend Come to think of it when's the last time you spent time on the little things inside the big picture throwing rocks in the water at the ocean often serve. Is a break for them and a very pleasant time for everyone flowers and blossoms may also get the younger child's attention why not explore with them think of it as time together and not as a cardio workout and the time should fly past while some kids may really take to hiking others may be easily distracted provide them with small targets to achieve like what do you think is around the corner and see that bird up the trail as ways to encourage them along on the other hand it may be you who needs the encouragement to keep up as they get older kids can have that bit of a lead but it's up to you to assess the trail conditions weather and other factors in determining what's appropriate a few more tips to help get the most from your family hike these are the same for any hike but you'll want to double check for these before you set out on the next family event drinking water anywhere you go bring along drinking water there may or may not be water along the way as you head up the hill or into the woods or on the pathway some areas do have very little water but others particularly on the trails we have don't be safe to subpoena taking a long enough for everyone don't forget to bring water and a bowl for your dog to feel be on the trail with them snacks snacks are critical aspect to making a family outing on a hike more enjoyable and fun gives everyone a break and the kids something that they can look forward to going all the bars goldfish Power Bars juice boxes crackers seem to be most of the favorites that youngsters want their moms and dads feel good offering for them to have keep it simple bring things that don't require a cold Packer or even a smidge of preparation snacking should be easy sunscreen to hats particularly in our area the high overcasting clouds give a false sense of safety but you can get a severe skin burn even on a foggy day and if you aren't out in the sun much that can compound the situation even more so be sure to take along plenty of sunscreen waterproof if possible and apply it regularly. Don't forget the top of the head for those who wear their hair short in fact had is preferred some will use a baseball cap style others prefer the broader impact if you chose to go with the baseball cap Be sure to protect your ears since they'll be exposed to the sun even if your head isn't and don't make the mistake of thinking that if you're already tan you can't do sun damage your skin wrong protect your skin it's the thing you're in footwear boy this is something that can rear up and cause all kinds of problems never get a blister from wearing a new shoe for a long time or an ill fitting shoe when you are walking or playing a sport make sure everyone has a comfortable soft soled shoes for the trail tennis shoes are Ok hiking boots are best sandals can either work for you or against you depending on the surface where you'll be hiking if you're on the beach and crossing creeks and small streams sandals may be the most comfortable and convenient but for most situations you'll want to close to shoe that provides protection and comfort and don't overlook the socks hiking socks that absorb moisture and provide cushioning are designed for that use and do the best job of it and remind everyone to get those damp socks and shoes off for a good drying time bug repellent There's nothing quite like walking through a mosquito swarm or finding them on your arms legs or hair steels and ticks are going to be the most challenging issues that can distract from a grand day outside and make it a miserable one spray on mosquito repellent is the simplest for ticks Well we don't seem to be a place for the Lyme disease carrying forms but you'll still want to check for ticks if you see a bulls eye rational want to see your doctor early to get treatment if you've been in the grasses and brush have an inspection before getting back in the car no such passengers allowed. Poison Oak poison oak is one of the trickiest issues in the woods that hikers have in our area why because it blends in with other leaf plants and vines in the area it looks so pretty later when the colors change and it's still potent here and if it drops its leaves even on maintained trails you can find poison oak bushes and plants and if you or your kids have sandals on or short pants they can get a nasty rash that may require prescriptive points depending on the severity of the reaction look for a shiny leaf this time of the year that is a 3 Lobed leaf and as I learned in Boy Scouts leaves of 3 Let It Be does resemble an oak leaf it's a pretty good habit to get some of the tech new poison oak so for your trips ready kit and showers quickly as you can after your hike there are also sav that work well to friends in the know what tell you that this is the stuff to use to prevent poison oak don't it's for a solution to your exposure get right on it don't forget to isolate the exposed clothing in till it can be laundered don't wear any part of it again as poison oak resin on the clothing can cause problems again if it's touched. Travel with us know we're about to head out on Destination radio. The 1st is that impacting our region plugs are one of those That's what we'll share in this segment of destination radio about the historical impact of the 862 flood almost everyone has heard stories were guarding the various floods in the region most of the references have been associated with the 1964 flood because it was the largest in recent memory however it was not the largest flood in the area that distinction held by the Great Flood of 1962 so largest flood in the recorded history of a wide region that includes Oregon Nevada and California began in December 1961 and the window of rain and melting snow associated with the rains causing the flood continued for 4 weeks series of rainstorms began in Oregon in November of that year and you get all the way through January from Journey your one through the 12th a record amount of rain fell at the Columbia River Oregon and through the entire length of California while there are no official rainfall counts in Oregon and in the northern California regions that were inundated San Francisco measured $28.00 and a half inches of rain in 30 days and in Sonora 30 inches of rain fell in 10 days regardless of the specific amount of precipitation the rain that did fall not only swelled existing streams but also melted a significant snow accumulation in the Cascades and the coastal range prior to the flooding Oregon and Northern California had already received heavier than normal rainfall in November and an interesting change from what often is the cause of above normal rainfall flood was not from an El Nino event from the weather records kept by individuals but the cause is thought to have been the jet stream sliding south with heavy rainfall continuing as the jet stream travel further south into central California this rare event brought snow to the Central Valley and 40 consecutive days of rain throughout the Golden State flooding with compound and when a warmer more intense storm followed in the region melting the large amount of snow that had fallen in the mountains that runoff was added to the rain that Fed already . Swollen streams and valleys in the lower elevations flooding the valleys with a record setting amount of water we continue our presentation about the $862.00 flood and its impacts in our region Now granted the region we occupy was not settled to any great extent until 862 with the initial European settlements being established just one decade prior to this catastrophic flood and with the gold rush of 849 having occurred just a few years before that the concentration of population just didn't exist however that doesn't mean that the loss was less impressive throughout Oregon and California all the rivers and streams rose to great heights this meant that valleys were flooded towns Mills dams mining operations homes and livestock were swept away an early estimate of the property damage was $10000000.00 While that may not sound like much today it was estimated that for California nearly one quarter of the taxable real estate statewide was damaged and the state of California depended on property taxes went bankrupt state employees the governor and the legislature were not paid for a year and a half and this event triggered the economy's shift from ranching to farming and the impact that remains in effect today in Oregon the river had the greatest flood ever known even in Indian lore at Fort communication up river beyond Scottsburg was cut off and the river was full of floating houses barns rails and produce on the coast at Bandon the cook kill river swept away the early settlers property in the drainage and while there were few settlements there was also great damage along the Rogue River the Checco and pistol Rivers part of the reason for the extensive damage is rather logical since so much of the early economy was connected to the rivers with Mills ranching and fishing this is also where the freight depots were located and all were decimated during 5 weeks of Delhi. Crescent City while it doesn't have a river running through the city still has significant issues with the water in fact there are accounts that even 2 years later there was debris from the flood to be seen it was the driftwood brought to the ocean by the regional rivers which accumulated on the beaches one eyewitness took the time to measure off some of the logs on the beach and he indicates that quote The wood is thrown up in great piles and the size of some of these logs is tremendous but it is not uncommon to see logs 150 feet long and 4 feet in diameter at the little into where the top is broken off one measured at 210 feet long this is the final aspect of our presentation and sharing of the great $862.00 flood the impacts were just as great in the area south of Crescent City as an area 2 in Klamath just north of the current bridge for term law and the entire community of Klamath were destroyed inundated by water and debris bridges were washed away upstream on the Klamath and the Trinity Rivers towns located along both also disappeared due to the sudden mill of snow and heavy rains coming down stream and because there was so much snow in the valleys in the mountains once the warm rains came the rivers all went up quickly with the runoff. Mills cabins water wheels used for mining along the rivers and the creeks were engulfed accounts reflect not a single bridge was left for the distance of 150 miles from the clam to the ocean in Scotia or forest Ville as it is known the river came up over the bluff and approached the plateau where the current highway is in the 150 years since it's almost impossible to find signs of the event that rocked Oregon Washington and states inland but this was the signature flood for this part of the country and that some of the history in the stories behind the great 862 flood that impacted humble and curry counties if you live on California's Redwood coast or on the Wild Rivers coast of Oregon this is where you'll find out about things to do and places to see that are right where you live if you're visiting our unique area we'll tell you about events and activities that will make you want to stay awhile longer special Roads to take more spectacular scenery trails that let you hike in the tall trees great places to peddle your bike or paddle a canoe with streaming audio at destination dash Radio dot com and at 980 am this is destination radio and friend of clothing company customer service starts at our door and having choices is part of the service that makes shopping here so much fun Hi This is Karen and I'm always happy to help customers shop for themselves or find a special gift we have a huge selection of socks lots of stylish clothing and as a bright and hard store we offer a wonderful collection of brightening censorious jewelry handbags watches sunglasses and home decor and we always look forward to seeing you friend our clothing company 361 main street in the Victorian village of Ferndale cash flow in liquidity These are concepts that are central to any sharp chief financial officer So who is the c.f.o. The City California variety. Parks recreation areas wilderness parks natural preserves and wildlife areas all throughout Humboldt County some are easy to find and get to while others are there are a bit more remote but well worth the effort to take and seek and find those locations. Some of the easier ones to find. Grizzly Creek Redwood State Park is a state park is located on the Van Dusen River just off Highway 36 which is south of Fortuna it's a 400 acre park that has everything you might need other only 20 campsites this is a really popular place for campgrounds during the daytime for barbecuing and for swimming the visitor center has some memorabilia as well as some of the educational displays help share the story of the history and the dynamics the natural dynamics of grizzly Creek redwoods hikers and walkers grizzly Creek has many loop trails throughout the old growth redwood grows found in the area and quite a few of these are trails that will have folks going up and down and out to. The river gorge on some challenging trails even for those of you who are a little bit more experienced and in shape this is a fun place for fall fishing in the river for steelhead as well as for salmon so what else can you do to relax and play a grizzly Creek campgrounds there are plenty of areas for picnics and since the park is comfortably beyond the fog belt you'll want to remember to bring along some bug repellent and some sunscreen or maybe one of those big floppy hats there's also many interpretive exhibits and family programs to help you share the magic of grizzly Creek and the park whether you're a 1st time visitor or whether you're one of those who regularly visit the park drinking water is available and you also find some bathrooms as well as bathroom facilities that also include some showers so after one of those long walks or of his a little too hot you can shower off that's grizzly Creek State Park. Well Redwood State Park is the largest of the state parks found in our area and it's the 3rd biggest one in the state of California it's nearly $53000.00 acres with nearly 25 percent old growth redwood forest the original park that was created in 1921 is in the bowling Memorial Grove significant expansion occurred with the acquisition of the book Creek watershed and the Rockefeller forest the largest remaining own growth redwood forest in the world. The size of the park is also a match with its facilities there are over $250.00 camping sites in 3 different campgrounds found within humble redwoods there are environmental camps group camps trail camps there's even a horse camp for hikers bikers and horse writers there are over 199 miles of trails for you to get out and have some fun on along the south fork of the you'll river there are ample opportunities for you to swim to picnic and to put a boat in the water. There are many locations that locals and visitors alike recognize within what redwoods founder's Grove is one such destination another is the 32 mile Avenue of the giants auto tour you pick up one of the brochures and there are various points along the 32 miles that explain some of the historical and some of the natural activities that are found in those areas at the Visitor Center you can find a lot of activities for everybody in the family to enjoy like junior ranger programs campfire programs and interpretive nature walks in the forest along some of the trails that lead out of the groves the Avenue of the giants is a 32 mile drive that goes from Phillips ville to pepper wood and if you're looking for is a nice opportunity for some fresh fruit and vegetables pepper wood is really no need in the Humboldt County area for its agriculture the weather is very comfortable throughout the year with highs in the summer months sometimes averaging red around the eighty's and during the winter months it's a more mild in the high fifty's to the low sixty's this is the area that dealt with the most severe of the severe conditions in the historical 1964 flood the interpretive center will help provide some of that perspective for you to appreciate at home redwoods State Park. The most southern state park in humble County is Richard Grove City Park this park was named after the 25th state governor of California when it was established in 1922 so its one year younger than humble residence this is the 1st significant old growth redwood forest that you find headed north from the south. Richardson's grow features 9 miles of hiking trails and offers river access along with many picnic areas you'll be able to choose from biking in hiking campsites as well as the traditional tent in r.v. Campsites. When driving through Richardson's grove on the redwood highway you want to pay particular attention to the other vehicles the roadways narrow and curvy and while there are plans to realign it in the future it currently can be a little unsettling if a large vehicle is headed your way through the Great.
