To Redwood what is a cedar spruce a fur Well lots of people think they know what these trees are but do they really let's begin with redwood trees what is a coast Redwood to start with as a group Coastal Redwoods are the tallest trees in the world if you have a city reference a redwood often exceeds the height of a 30 story building at the base many trees are over 25 feet in diameter that means from one side to the other if you ran a drill through the tree the trees and. Elves are one of the quickest growing species as well a redwood will often grow more than a foot a year the age of some of these trees is as inspiring as their size as some are as old as 2000 years most of the redwood forest you see in our area are not old growth but 2nd growth that means these trees were planted after the area was logged for the older trees so most of them are younger trees humble redwoods and coast Redwood park are where you'll find the majority of the ancient or old growth stands fires are actually redwood trees friends why for a couple of reasons fires actually open a redwood cone and allow the 10 to 12 seeds in the cone to have a chance to germinate and grow Secondly the trees themselves survive due to the fact that the redwood bark is often up to 12 inches thick protecting the tree itself from the heat and lastly fires feed on the down materials found on the forest floor when fires occur our forest management practices allow for the forest floor to be cleared and harvested there are space for new trees to take root. Another unique thing about redwood trees is that they take in moisture not from their roots but from their leaves border needles so it's a fog in the rain we get along the coast rather than keeping up the sunshine these features allow the trees to Flora and grow healthy when milled the hardwood of a redwood is pinkish in color another species unique to our region is the Port Orford Cedar where the redwood grows in southern Oregon the Port au Prince cedar runs from Coos Bay down in Humboldt County these trees can live to be about 350 years old and can get pretty big as well comfortably taller than 200 feet tall and a dozen feet or more in diameter the branches of the poor orphan cedar were used to construct sweat lodges stools and headrests by the native corrupt tribes of the region the Port Orford is one of the 9 seater species that exist with 5 being found in other regions of America the Port au Prince Cedar is also referenced by other names as well the more common of these are white cedar or Oregon cedar or Lawson Cypress which is reference to Scottish born nurserymen Charles Lawson who 1st introduced the species to our culture when you cut the poor offered cedar or see some of the material used by woodworkers the aroma of the cedar is very distinctive The Myrtlewood also called Pepper Wardour bay laurel is a broad leaved evergreen native to our area this tree grows 6120 feet in the wild as contrast to do the redwood or cedar the myrtle Wood is a slow growing species putting out an inch to a foot early in its growth cycle but taking from 80 to 120 years to mature the broad leaves or Myrtlewood when you roll them or crush them have a distinctive scent that is often used as a substitute for cooking in exchange for bay leaves around humbug mountain in northern Curry County and in pepper wherry in the southern Humboldt County you'll be able to see many full grown Myrtlewood trees the wood of the myrtle water bay laurel varies significantly this happens because it's influenced by the materials in the soil where it grows the wood color ranges from Ally Brown or vanilla color to those in the dark brown range with hints of read. Well this lends us out to a delightful writing of looks it also makes matching very difficult unless you have wood from the same tree to work with and this hardwood works very well in a wide variety of applications including furniture Douglas fir actually is not a true for at all but then again it isn't a pine or a spruce tree which it often confuse with the Douglas for is a distinct species unto itself its Latin name pseudo Suga means false and Locke and it's named after the Scottish position a naturalist Archibald Menzies who discovered the tree on Vancouver Island in Canada and $791.00 the common name for Douglas came from David Douglas Scottish botanist who identify the tree in the Pacific Northwest in $826.00 the species has many common names including Oregon pine British Columbia pine and red for whatever name you prefer the species is the most plentiful sapwood found in America the state of Oregon produces more softwood lumber than any other in the union because the prevalence of the douglas fir in the coastal forests n required reforestation has been in effect for years but even before that was in place replanting has been occurring for over a century the what is used for many of the framing members of wood frame construction and because of its rapid growth can produce timbers that are used for long spans or it is used for laminated beams for additional muscle these trees will grow to a height of 250 feet with a 10 foot diameter at the base and the douglas fir is the organ state tree Sitka spruce trees are also rather prevalent in the area as well these trees grow along the coast never further than 125 miles from the ocean and are one of the larger trees being able to reach the height of over 325 feet and are known to grow 15 feet at the base in the area forests if you find cones there are more than likely Sitka spruce cones which are 3 to 4 inches long the said to spruce were and still are prevalent throughout our region and in the national parks state parks important areas we have Prairie Creek State Park has some of the oldest spruces approaching so. 150 years so it just Bruce is valued for its light soft and relatively strong and flexible properties it used for general construction ship building and most often area for plywood you also find it used to musical instruments such as violins and guitars the varied trees you'll find in our area another reason to get out and explore relax and enjoy our forests.
