I'm Patrick Boyle who will county parks I got into the county parks system do dumb luck and timing I just happened to graduate from h.s. You at the same time I had been working seasonally for county parks and a full time job opened up at a summer still a swimmer's the way it is this wonderful campground out on Highway 36 out in the old growth redwoods it's really unique it's probably the closest a state park experience that you're going to get for a little lowly county park the locals love it about 90 percent of our business comes from this area right here and then we're written up as a 5 star rating in a German tour guides we get a lot of European tourists come September October the river meanders around the park so the park is almost like a little peninsula in the campground and so there's river access from almost every single campsite out along the way I think will make swimmers alight so special in the way it campgrounds is that we operate a campground not a cramped ground you get space with your campsite you're not packed right on top of your neighbor you have some elbow room campsites are somewhat large so they do you accommodate me you know nice small family groupings very easily begin an a.w.a. Are probably neck and neck for experience begins just gorgeous to go out and walk out on the on the on the surf out there and between the. Lagoon and the ocean you get some stellar views of back towards you know up the coast there and then just the burning out of big lagoon can be very very calm and soothing a way of parks great you get lots of sun very low crowds a lot of times and again the campsites in a way are very large and accommodating in the wildflowers are gorgeous when the meadows just fall and spring. Almost all our county parks are all dry camping we don't have any sort hookups in any of the campsites Summers the light has electric and water hook ups for trailers or 6 of those operate on a 1st come 1st serve basis big lagoon we're in the process of adding one more electric and water site their big lagoon but our camping is pretty primitive We have a firing a campsite a camp and a picnic table and you could go freshwater I always like to think of fresh water as our little our wonderful little city park in the county it's a nice beautiful mode lawn area with great picnic grounds lots of bouncy houses out there fantastic for kids birthday parties. Summer Slayton Pamplin Grove we've been seeing turkeys they're making a great comeback out here in the park we haven't seen turkeys out in the park in 24 years or so you do have to be careful of bears and things of big again on occasion we do get a bear running through we always recommend securing your trash and garbage every night take your garbage out to the dumpster every night and drop it off so you don't have and want to visitors stealing your your Oreo cookies and everything it's a real drag when all your food disappears and morning. I'm Patrick well within Will County Parks probably the closest state park experience that you're going to get in the old growth redwoods. If you live in Smith River or Scotia. There are a great many opportunities for the person interested in the natural wildlife in our region to enjoy being in nature and finding a wide variety of animals and plants Roosevelt elk well being one of the signature animals for our area there are animals that are forest creatures in the truth of the word in fact they enjoy open lands and will stay around the forest edges. Protection and cover from the weather. At the Roosevelt named after President Teddy Roosevelt males or Bulls average about $875.00 pounds with the females or cows tipping the scales at a Savella $700.00 pounds these are the largest antlers of all species reaching up to 4 feet with their distinctive 3 point tip while their range is now throughout the coastal mountain range in our area and the Cascades north of here in our area there are 4 or 5 locations where they are most apt to be observed the herds are most often seen around the little red schoolhouse by the stone lagoon around Davidson Road that's the road from the redwood highway to gold bluff speech State Park as well as inside Redwood National Park and along the roadway through this whole area of humble County it's not uncommon to see the ocean beach or along Redwood Creek on the gravel bars Roosevelt are more active during the morning and evening hours but during the cooler months of the year you may also see them somewhat active throughout the daytime and regardless of the activity level if the elk appears to be somewhat lackadaisical don't let that low you into a false sense of security these massive creatures can still be quite unpredictable during the fall calving and reading season did you know that elk and moves are related to each other another question often asked is about the horns and how quick they grow somewhere between $10.00 to $12.00 inches a month. Their signature creature you'll see in the area northern spotted owls while this bird is currently listed as an endangered species the habitat they prefer isn't old and 2nd growth forest which we have many one of the more interesting things about the appearance of Spotted Owls is that they don't have toughs around their ears giving their heads a circular appearance. Tend to be brownish in color and have larger spots than many other of the species they eat squirrels rats and bats as well as other owls this is no light weight Al there's quite a large range where the birds live up and down the West Coast of the. But they are all well recognized in our area. Another bird that's found throughout our region the species found in our region is the northern bald eagle Why is it named bald at one time bald meant white which is the color of their heads they are part of the same family that has as members kites and hawks which will also find throughout coastal Humboldt County we also have a large. It's a populated region around. It's located on one of the islands in humble Bay in a stand of trees that were planted by the community once located on one of the islands in the bay eager to tend to be white in appearance you'll see them standing in the areas around humble Bay but will also hunt in the lagoon mud flats and the slew surrounding the bay and around the rivers and streams of our area eager to hunt in shallow water and salt water or fresh water swamps and marshes either by themselves or in groups once they find prey they often will be still until plucking fish or amphibians out of the water but sometimes they simply stand still and wait for their prey to come to them. Eager to part of the Heron family you'll also see the occasional blue heron around tumble but this is less likely to occur. It seems as if the most prevalent ocean birds in the area are seagulls or California gulls their heads are white and they have a yellow bill they prefer to eat insects and fish that are well known for scavenging at the docks as well they also are regularly seen around garbage cans pretty much California goals will find you if they think you have food for some family fun consider having little ones in your family Terra pieces of bread or a loaf of bread to feed to the gulls. The California girl like most girls is an opportunistic feeder eating pretty much whatever they can forage for in fact there are times when the goals fly with their mouth open in order to capture whatever may be in the air but they prefer fish grain fruit and turkey sandwiches both parents share in the incubation responsibilities they each spent 3 or 4 hours on the nest and then rotate off the number of eggs or clutch ranges one to 4 and the next can be made of pretty much anything including feathers and bones leaves and branches but also scrapped into the dirt or sand. These are just a few of the critters and wildlife you can expect to find throughout the year in our area hopefully all the viewing of the Roosevelt bald eagles since Eagles will be done from a healthy and safe distance binoculars are suggested for viewing the wildlife or for any of the tremendous views you'll come upon in our region Remember give yourself enough time to really appreciate enjoy and play throughout Humboldt County . It's all about having people know you before they need you and that's what radio does best one on one word of mouth from you to them getting a real return on your advertising investment right here on the radio let's visit another. Great destination and destination radio. There are many folks who choose to ride their bicycles along the Oregon coast on Highway $101.00 we've all seen them in town as they come through during the summer and dry months some choose to go for a day ride while others elect to go for much further distances along the west coast regardless of the distance traveled the goals are often the same get a little exercise see some amazing views and perspectives and get home safely this destination radio segment is intended for the casual biker to get their blood stirring not for the biking enthusiast who already knows what and where they're headed summer on the Curry County coast brings the perfect weather for bikers to hit the streets and highways Celso happens to be the time the motoring public starts vacations with peak volume and traffic arriving in June through September as a general reminder be sure if you're in the area of motorists that you make yourself clearly seen so no one surprised in Gold Beach there's a wonderful bike ride that can start in the Portugal beach the old coast road is still in use from the northern end of the Patterson bridge over the Rogue River that's the direction you'll want to go out of the port it's a simple hill up from the port along Highway want to one I'll take it to the bridge enjoy the historic nature of the bridge and some of the great views you may wish to use the walk areas on the sides of the deck of the bridge to cross there isn't much room if 2 vehicles are using the traffic lanes. At the north end of the bridge you'll want to take a right turn a road that is north bank Rogue River Road this is also the old coast road you'll parallel the north bank of the Rogue river till you get close to Doyle point and then the road curves to the north you'll travel north along the road which will provide you see the views of the Pacific as you pedal toward Autor point the road ties back into the Highway 101 just south of Otter point state recreation area where you could leave one of your vehicles as a pick up car or truck where you can simply backtrack on the route as it's less than a 4 mile ride the area you'll be going through is the site of the miners fort that was occupied by local residents during the Indian wars of the $150.00 s. While the fort is a loose term for what existed that's the phrase that's used this route is known as the what a burn loop section since what are burned was a community in the area in the late 1980 s. Lasting for a few years and the route provides you access to the beach the north of the Rogue River in the Rogue River reef another scenic ride in the county is the Brookings harbor area the route can start pretty much anywhere but a natural place to start is Harris Beach State Park you'll find a campground and several parking lot so if you just want to spend a few hours or if you want to linger a few days you have options from the park you can take Highway want to one South there's an adequate shoulder area along with the fact that the speed limit has shrunk from 55 to 35 By that time the flow is easy to travel with. Coming through the city of Brookings there are a number of signal lights which break up the traffic flow however on street parking is permitted so there's not an awful lot of maneuverable area short of merging with the traffic in the 4 lanes of Jeffco Avenue but again the traffic is travelling at a comfortably slow pace so you should know how much concern once you cross the river bridge you'll want to take the exit down to the port and I'll provide you the opportunity to ride past the harbor and if you like to ride out to sport even Beach it's a public beach but also has an r.v. Park is a feature a paved road way allowed for touring bikers to ride through with out any concerns you'll thank you to New South going up the bluff and then turn south along Ocean View Drive it's an easy road way to hear through neighborhoods of houses that overlook the ocean but also give you a chance to see up close views of the lily feels that the region is renowned for Ocean View Drive continues along and brings you back to highway I want to one just north of the winch up river in the California Oregon State line once you rejoin highway want to want you can travel north as there is an ample shoulder apron back into Brookings the stretch gives you a much broader view of the agriculture fields take you past residential and commercial developments now very I catching part of the community for the entire 3 mile ride back on this part of the ride you'll have a constant view of the Pacific or you could go south for a half mile and visit the Crissy Field Information Center enjoy the views from the sea run facility there's a nice easy slope trail to the beach you'll enjoy the views the center is open 95 dealing in is a great source for travel information. And if you go only a few 100 yards south across the field you'll find the signs for the state of Oregon and the state of California the pending on the side you can take those pictures of entering or leaving each state or both this little extra bits about another mile on your tires you may also be able to experience 1st hand the check to effect visitors often comment about why the north side of the check go feels warmer than the southern end that's the effect it has to do with the topography and he just skipping from the Illinois Valley through drainages to the coast there are times when the thermometer actually will drop 5 degrees from one end of the bridge to the other total ride from Harris beach the park to the wind Chuck and then returning is about 7 miles while you wouldn't want to take youngsters on this ride for adults if they're comfortable afternoon of cycling and the beauty of this ride in addition to the scenery is that if you need to refresh yourself or grab a bite to eat along the way you'll have ample opportunities to do so if you plan on taking either of these rides and leaving early in the morning you may want to take along a windbreaker the fog is often present while the afternoon temperatures can touch into the high eighty's of times many mornings that starts out in the mid fifty's enjoy your time out bicycling Curry County. Maybe you live in Humboldt del Norte or curry counties or perhaps you're visiting someone or enjoying the sights here on California's red wood coast or and Oregon spectacular Wild Rivers coast for locals and travelers alike destination radio can direct you to the natural highlights of our region to beaches the rivers the tall trees and the hidden treasures that will make it worth your while to stay play and relax a while with Destination radio night 88 and on the web at destination dash Radio dot com.
