Destination radios thanks our sponsors Here's one of those who is helping make our journey possible. 26 years ago my husband I drove across the river and Stuart from bridge for the 1st time and discovered the magic of Ferndale and the river valley 26 years later I still feel like I'm on vacation every day hi my name is Karen ping a tour and some of you may know me as the owner from duckling company but what you may not know is that before I discovered Ferndale I grew up in Burbank in Southern California in fact I literally grew up reading my bike on the back lot of a major motion picture studio and 18 started what would become a 30 year career at Warner Brothers My 1st job was as a file clerk in accounting and I had many learning opportunities that eventually led to my becoming the vice president of t.v. Post-production I had a great career making a film Magic but I can honestly tell you that living on the north coast is real magic I get to live and work every day in what looks like a Hollywood set and believe me Hollywood has made use of our real town of Ferndale in films like Salem's Lot outbreak in the majestic hill house or even made an empire episode on for and offer his p.b.s. Series California road show and what a place to live historic architecture surrounded by Virgin pasture land where there are more cows than people a picturesque 4 mile drive to an unspoiled Coast 110 acre closed canopy wilderness park within our city limits so back in 1909 I hadn't taken a vacation in 10 years and my husband Karl who had his own career as a motion picture and t.v. Film editor and producer decided we were taking a driving trip with redwoods and Victorian architecture as the draws we headed north I can still remember being awed by the majesty of the redwoods along the avenue of the giants and seen Ferndale for the 1st time how does this place even exist in 1909 was almost like crossing from bridge into the mythical town of Brigadoon and the people were so genuinely friendly and down to earth we spent 4 days here and actually kind of joked about retiring to Ferndale and we were so charmed by this little town 3 months later I bought a house over the phone sir. I don't sing really I did and the rest as they say is for Intel history 22 years ago I began businesses for and our clothing company I've always loved clothes I had great experience buying them for myself so why not have a women's vote I can't imagine being in business anywhere but Ferndale my friends have become my customers my customers have become my friends and I have the opportunity to meet new and interesting people who visit for an almost every day of the year I'd like to personally invite you to visit our historic business district inferno and experience a slice of Americana that you perhaps didn't think existed in this day and age our shops and restaurants offer good old fashioned customer service and I will be pleased to welcome you to my shop for and our clothing company where you can pick up historic walking and driving tour brochures with my compliments whether you live in humble county or visiting here I'd love for you to have the opportunity to find the magic in the Victorian village of Ferndale. National Forest was great in $1807.00 a while the force boundaries were not always as they are now in the early days there was some fluctuation on where the boundary would be as the climate National Forest was established in 1956 with the addition of a major land segment north of the Rogue River the Siskiyou National Forest boundaries were set there are 5 Ranger districts in this national forest trout go to lease Gold Beach Illinois Valley and powers the forest includes over a 1000000 acres including $33000.00 in California the rest are in Oregon overall the terrain is steep and rugged with some of the summits reaching 7000 feet the forest is located between the coastal mountains and the Siskiyou mountains in addition to the varied elevations the percipient Titian ranges wildly as well from a mere 40 inches in length to 150 inches near the crest of the coastal range that sets the stage for a variety of flora and fauna there are a total of 5 officially designated wild and scenic rivers located in the Siskiyou National Forest the rogue and the North Fork of the Smith are probably the 2 most well known but the elk and Illinois rivers are also designated one of the more well known aspects of the Siskiyou National Forest is that it is subject to very large forest fires whether man caused or lightning sourced with forest management practices of the last decades allowing nature to dictate conditions rather than managing the forest the stage was set for major fires. 3 fires burned 110000 acres in the late 1980 s. Within the forest 15 years later the Biscuit fire burned nearly half a 1000000 acres and also as one of the largest fires in the history of the state of Oregon those who hike into the national forest are treated to a diversity that is unrivaled in fact botanist from around the world visit to study the inordinate amount of rare plant species among the best or most well known are Brewer spruce and Sadler oak other trees found within the forest include Redwood port offered cedar the Pacific you and sugar pines there are also estimates that there are almost $300.00 species of fish and wildlife within the boundaries of the Siskiyou National Forest. The Native Americans in the region are estimated to have inhabited the area for nearly 12000 years there were 2 primary groups of Indians that it's a common now the past and when the white settlers came to the area in the mid 850 s. Some of the tribes were peaceful others developed quite a reputation for being hostile with the discovery of golden 851 as an extension of the California Gold Strike the setting was ripe for conflict and there was in fact the battles were known for their ferocity on both sides as whites and the rogue Indians came together and what is generally referred to as the Rogue River Indian War It's an interesting byproduct of the gold fever found in the region is that major mining activities continued in the forest lands right up through the Great Depression timber production in the national forests began in the early 1900 at the northern end between the years of 1912 and 1915 the smith powers logging company extended a rail line up the south fork of the Kokila river to access billions of board feet of timber it owned during the period of the Depression and World War 2 The c.c.c. The Civilian Conservation Corps built trails campgrounds fire lookouts and forest service facilities throughout the forest some still exist today including the ranger station in Gold Beach which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places during the 2nd World War the only bombing of the American mainland by enemy aircraft occurred in the system of forest in the Gold Beach in Brookings area a Japanese pilot flew a submarine based seaplane over Wheeler ridge and dropped a bomb into the damp forest the bomb did not result in a major fire that was the purpose of the effort. Timber it was the mainstay of southwest Oregon for decades and the source of the timber Well the Siskiyou National Forest prior to a change of management philosophy there would be over 165000000 board feet of contracts sold each year but starting in the mid 1980 s. Environmental regulations and listing of the Northern spotted owl caused most timber sales not to be let timber wars ensued as the industry fought to keep their industry alive and viable against environmentalist who eventually won out through lawsuits government regulations and terrorist actions even after the Biscuit Fire in 2002 environmental protests arose wanted to keep salvage harvesting from occurring in burned over areas. A final adjustments that assists you National Forest occurred when it was merged with the former Rogue River National Forest the force now encompasses along with several large coastal reverse the entire Rogue River drainage from its headwaters along the crests of the cascade in Siskiyou mountains through the coastal range and ending up at the Pacific Ocean for those wanting to explore the forest and lands there are biking and hiking opportunities and many campgrounds to access want to ride horses you'll find many trails for you to enjoy and spend the day exploring for details stop by the Gold Beach ranger station on Ellensburg Avenue in town. As in most locations throughout the country there were periods of time when settlement occurred and don't or county even though there were various visits from exploration parties settlements by European based settlers began in earnest in 855 prior to this time there were Spanish explorers who arrived by ship in the 17th and 18th centuries but the 1st American overland Explorer was Jetta die a Smith who had a California state park named doctrine and 828 Smith and his party of fur trappers traded with Native Americans in the area came upon Lake girl in camp to Crescent City the 2 tribes that they had contact with were the follow on the Iraq Major Pearson reading found gold in $848.00 on the Trinity River which triggered gold miners on the rivers throughout the region by $850.00 done or county was not immune to this the town of Crescent City was established by 853 by j.f. Wendell who settled the land parcel of 220 acres the town became a regional trade center and provided shipping opportunities in and out of the area to supply the miners needs there were gold discoveries on the Smith River as well as in the immediate vicinity of Crescent City it was in that time that people began looking for land routes into and out of the community the effort to do so pushed through the 1st road which was loosely defined as a road known as the Kelsey trail it went from Crescent City to y. Rica the road was completed in 855 the next issue was making the harbor safer so an $856.00 Battery Point Lighthouse was built to aid in navigation they needed to be able to get larger amounts of supplies and a larger items to the growing community in order to supply the mines as well as provide many of the items needed to build homes the lighthouse help significantly in this effort locally milled lumber also needed to get to market in San Francisco so the poor grew with these demands and as the amount of shipping increased so did the need for those unfamiliar with. The harbor and getting their ships and safely a lighthouse is available for public tours all summer long and continues to have full time like keepers a lighthouse has had a very interesting life so far including seeing the tsunami of 1964 and other memorable events as well but you'll get that information during the tour timber has also been a critical part in the history of Crescent City and Eleanor county's history as an humble County the 850 s. Is when the timber industry began all locally produced lumber was sent to San Francisco to help satisfy the need for material to build the homes in that town as it evolved the timber industry continued for nearly 75 years through post World War 2 as the demand continued and our area was able to feed the appetite for Redwood along the West Coast in the decade of the 50s industry transformed from old growth redwoods into 2nd growth stands which at the time had been growing for 75 to 100 years there remain many grows of old growth trees but it became increasingly more expensive to get those trees to the mills which also facilitated the mills to retool for the smaller trees the Evolve industry continued to be active through the 1980 s. When it became more difficult and expensive to acquire the wrong materials due to regulation lead set asides and changing forest management techniques by those larger governmental landholders another significant part of Del Norte County history involves the interaction of the community with Mother Nature sure the coastline is a rugged one with challenges of their own but there's also another issue that has peppered the history of don't or county tsunamis is a term now used tidal waves is what many known the phenomenon as well tsunamis have peppered the West Coast for as long as there has been a West Coast the most significant damage causing have been in 1964 and in 2011. The 964 earthquake was triggered on Good Friday with a 9.2 magnitude earthquake in the Prince William Sound of Alaska that triggered the tsunami coming down the coast the quake was felt for 4 minutes and was so powerful that a local island moved nearly 50 feet the open bay in harbor at Crescent City offers left it open to the impact of Southern traveling waves caused by this event and they hit hard 4 distinct waves buffeted the shore and inundated Crescent City with a height of 20 to 21 feet hundreds of buildings were destroyed a 3 day fire was caused by a gasoline truck being slammed into electrical wires and a dozen people died. The wave run up caused millions of dollars of damage and covered all of Front Street and in all 30 city blocks were impacted more recently the $9.00 earthquake in Tokyo Japan caused extensive damage to the harbor and docks resulting in the construction of the new harbor you see today in crisis city a discussion of dull north county wouldn't be complete without talking about the 1st white settlements at Smith River the area is currently one of the world's largest producer of Easter lilies you know these fields because every once in a while you'll see the early Boomers popping up the 1st white families were the dominant Davis and heights who arrived in 853 the 1st big homestead was a Westbrook ranch known for some time as a reservation ranch after some of it was offered up to 1500 Klamath Indians to live after a flood of washed away many of their homes along the Smith River the original 160 acre ranch was added to over the years making it one of the largest in the area there's also quite a fishing operation along this myth ever by the community it was primarily based on King Salmon harvested salted put in barrels and shipped to San Francisco it was operated by German immigrant August already who migrated to the area in 1976 Natural Resources are always part of the history culture and economy of Del Norte County and we invite you to get out in nature and enjoy yourself soon.
