But I mean last game I mean with them playing as much man as I did and then they had really shown that I mean definitely was different but you always have been you want to be prepared for that and so will be prepared for everything that we can we can get hopefully this week Kansas city tries to get back on track this week against the Texans while another gunslinger of a quarterback is trying to sneak in early claim to division title Green Bay wanted Dallas last week without benefit of a touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers will face the Lions this week at Lambeau trying to grab the n.f.c. North by the throat is very important especially look at. This guys in a way lays out we finished the season with 3 division games 2 on the road and you know obviously these are important ones when it comes down to tiebreakers and put itself in a position to have a chance to make the playoffs this would be obviously a big leg up early in the scene for us to to go to 3 unknown division perfect divisional records are a luxury that some of the other teams in the league the have nots can't afford Miami the New York Jets Cincinnati and Washington all arrived in week 6 with a goose egg in the win column trying to navigate what the future holds in d.c. That doesn't include Jay Gruden who was informed by Redskins g.m. Bruce Allen on Monday that his coaching days in Washington were over these games we weren't close and we've we've lost 5 games and we didn't lose them in the last 2nd we lost these games decisively and we have to change them in our fans deserve that in this market the services were in the nation's capital and it deserves better than that and we have to get it done hey come on Bruce don't worry about it we all deserve more for generations and so little has gotten done in the nation's capital nothing changes about what the Patriots are doing in New England fans were even the least bit worried about Tom Brady's 3 and 3 career record against the New York Giants heading into Thursday night they didn't have to be this was no Super Bowl 42 or 46 I am going Tony to sell the have a recap of Thursday night football guys. Thank you Scott final score in Foxboro 35 to 14 the Patriots defeat the New York Giants Bill Belichick team is now 6 you know and Tony was a little bit of everything offense was not explosive but Tom Brady a couple rushing touchdowns defense continues to come up with big plays and special teams blocked punt for a touchdown all around effort for New England yeah they're opportunistic tonight I think as a team and start off slow or that often ends but you get the big special needs boy he presents great already been great all year really just harassing Daniel Jones and confusing him into turnovers but then Tom Brady just finds ways to get it done and they lost Josh Gordon but they didn't miss a beat and they just kept it going and you look up and they have good numbers and they put 35 points on the board they're the best team in the a.f.c. Right now and the way this thing going and you look at their schedule it's not difficult to after the bye which is week dine and it's hard to imagine if the less something this terrible happened to Brady or one of their key guys not to imagine that we're going to be sitting right here come playoffs in probably championship we can thank you it seems like it's every year with a loss the giants fall to 2 and 4 final score 3514 Pats Let's send it back to Scott Graham in our Westwood One studios Scott Ok Thanks guys up next we'll get News and Notes from around the league with our own Ian Rapoport this is n.f.l. I'm good man how are you I'm good and apparently this week you had at it just an absolutely I opening discussion on rap sheet and friends it was really awesome used it with Devin Clowney who you know obviously we spent a ton of time talking about and you know focusing on over the course the last couple months as he did not sign his franchise tag and in Houston and all that and he basically broke down everything regarding a trade it was really cool I mean what he told me was he planned to come in and report to the Texans he was told that he was going to be traded he nowhere so he didn't come in he didn't want to go to Miami which we sort of thought but didn't definitively know he could add up wanted to go someplace like Seattle he could come in and win and then that's exactly what happened also told me that he flew a private plane on that Friday night before cutdown day that's how nobody saw him in an airport that's how they were able to keep it quiet the whole thing was on a scale that was pretty interesting I love the conversation and I'm looking forward to catching it this week so some of the other stuff going on this week on Monday we saw what everybody kind of knew was going to happen the Redskins decided to let go of their head coach Jay Gruden and you know you take a look at the situation as it stands in Washington right now they've got an interim coach they have the situation they have in front of them a little bit interesting to see that Adrian Peterson comes out on Thursday and says it's the best week of practice since he's been there and. Seeing something like that being said but where do things stand in Washington where do they go from here . Yeah I have to say that's hilarious comment for a lottery is not saying that agent Peterson's wrong but Jay Gruden did not want agent Peterson to resign that was a front office decision Jay was never fully on board with it nor was he fully onboard with Peterson himself. You know that was to hear those overly positive comments. I always chuckled a little but I can't imagine that happy but you know I think there's a lot of things that Gruden probably has a right to to sort of grumble about you know it sounds like to me that the you know Redskins are looking at a possible new coach bounce you know like the interim coach comes in great in toughness sprints run the ball hit someone all that stuff you know I I would imagine the Redskins are going to look a little different a little more physical a little tougher and run the ball a little more on Sunday it would appear another team it's certainly met with more than its share of struggles and I'm talking about the Cincinnati Bengals here and you know still looking for their 1st win of the year it would seem right now anyway like they might be getting a little bit closer to getting a.j. Green back and more importantly what they keep saying right now is that a.j. Green is not going anywhere yeah and this was new on Thursday you know we have sort of thought. It wasn't going anywhere I had heard and I've asked the Bengals people a ton you know hey teams want to trade for a.j. Green what do you think what do you think and everything I had heard was Yeah no we're not trading him stop asking me they just you know it's different when you someone says source this or with the head coach comes out and says we are not trading him and I was definitive it was clear it was basically everything you'd want a head coach to say so the Bengals are not treating a.j. Green however on Thursday a really good sign you know he was out on the practice field in limited fashion. Doing stuff doing football stuff he did individual drills he ran he cut a little bit this on the same ankle that he had. You know had surgery on in July I believe member they really thought he was going to miss a couple weeks that it was more serious and then you know he had to miss about half the season they are close to getting him back and they have been so you know strapped for players this is big news for Cincinnati speaking of players who potentially could be treated is it possible Jaylen Ramsey is going to remain a Jaguar especially now that he had a heart to heart talk with the owner you know it was fascinating to hear on Thursday as well I mean the owner shot cause it was on the street which is apparently a Wall Street television station or something like that I keep my stocks you know private which is also nonexistent but anyway so he says you know he described a heart to heart with Ramsey on Tuesday that definitely happened I think they got more on the same page at least I know Ramsey's trader Quest will exist but it sounds like he knows he's probably not going anywhere you know for the time being and I don't know if France is going to play this week it sounds like he's going to be listed as questionable It sounds like he's going to let his body determine whether or not he plays certainly no guarantees out there but it was interesting here the optimism from shock on that at least he's going to play soon Codd said he'd probably play. You know college city pipe play Sunday we'll see if that actually happens but at least it will be soon in thanks so much appreciated and can't wait to hear your conversation with Mr Clowney All right check it out and I appreciate it and plus when we can contributor an n.f.l. History the Immaculate Reception December 23rd 1972 the open Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers in the a.f.c. Divisional playoffs the 3 Rivers Stadium and the longtime lead doormat Steelers had just watched Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler scamper 30 yards for a touchdown and a 7 to 6 lead for Oakland with just 117 left to go that's where I picked up a conversation with Franco Harris this past summer in Canton like this dealer they called an s.o.s. Say most dealers because door nose 39 News they always found a way to lose so here we are we're winning 6 to nothing right and as you talked about Kenny Stabler and here it is right at the end of the game right now. It happens again Mr Rooney deal man did Chief at that point the star walk into the elevator thinking once again we lost and he's on the elevator going down to the locker room he's not even in his box watching the game and all of a sudden he hears this big roar and have a clue what's going on but when he got off the elevator. We were winners all instinct obviously what ended up happening you go down field you're trying to figure out a way to see whether or not you might be able to get open in that situation here comes the ball flying at you I can imagine as an athlete and you were a great athlete it was anything other than instinct going after the ball you know what that's a great way to put it instinct because from leaving the backfield. Until going into the end zone you know right a DNS deforming Jimmy Jimmy Warren my mind is completely blank and I watched a film. When I dissected I said Well like I say no one catches a ball like that that low Ok No you like you just don't do it and then how do you catch something that low and not break stride if anything would have happened differently if I would have played for the ball game over if I would have broken stride in any type of way like I would have made it to the end so how do I explain it. Really And at that moment was the beginning I mean that literally was the beginning of something huge because the Steelers had not been a team that had been a playoff team a relevant team and from that moment on it went from that to one of the greatest teams of all time to just feel for where that was all headed even before that moment you know what Luckily I didn't know how bad they were. Until I. Got to do Steelers and into my rookie year that I really find when I really found out how bad they were you know being the you know rated the worst team in n.f.l. History and I was sent home like guys and I think if I remember correctly there they were only in one playoff game up until 972 we went to the 2nd one and. If you think about is it cannot team be this bad. And then you hear things like everybody wanted to be traded from the Steelers and everybody was afraid to be traded to the Steelers that they were the bottom of the barrel they were the worst so the worst. And so lucky I don't know any of that stuff in 1972 era. Eventually got on track team got on track and we had an incredible year and it was a year to just follow up when you were talking about that nobody expected no one saw it coming and it took our faith or you know or the whole city oh what's in front of a new it took the whole league by surprise it was in a credible you went on a run. That began with a Super Bowl victory a couple years later against the Vikings and that culminated at the end of the decade in Super Bowl 14 and an opportunity to win a 4th Super Bowl so we went from the sewers are the worst team to the Steelers are the greatest team of all time at this point for that of the decade of the 1970 s. And beyond in that Super Bowl 14 game I don't think people remember that was the one that you guys might have been in the most danger in because the Rams were giving you everything they had and you were down after 3 quarters in that ballgame What are your memories of that game against the Rams and how it ultimately fell into place oh I hate to tell you this but when we were down 11 not because we're good would be a good lot like honest of but. We weren't afraid and we knew we were going to win a game and that's what happened during the 70s we went from finding ways to lose. To finding ways to win we had players we had player that can make plays you know and and like that's how we did it during that decade by the way in case you're wondering where the famous moniker of Franco's 1st big moment came from a woman called Myron Cope before his 11 pm sportscast that night and suggested it simple as that that's all a favor Franco Harrison shrine in Canton in 1900 the mission of the Pro Football Hall of Fame is to honor the heroes of the game preserve its history promote its values and celebrate excellence everywhere find out more about the Pro Football Hall of Fame today at pro football h o f dot com More to come including our conversation with another Hall of Famer our very own to rel Davis this is n.f.l. Network and Westwood One analyst Hall of Famer as well to roll Davis t.v. How are you this week great stuff I am doing well and you and I are both doing better right now. Then I got imagine anybody around the Cleveland Browns team this is a team that everybody watched coming into this year with all kinds of expectations the addition of a mercurial talent like Odell back in junior and one year later for Baker Mayfield in what this team potentially could be so I turn it back around and I ask you why aren't they that yet. Well you know people look at teams and they look at Palin and they say that's not the kind of judge Sting's you know this is a very talented roster on defense often it's and so you're like they have to be good my experience is I've been on teams that had a lot of talent and it's not about have been a collection of talent it's having a have an a collaboration of talent and what they're the right amount of coaching to go with that and so they're trying to figure things out you have a lot of Mousa feet on off and you know Freddy Hitchens it's his 1st time as a head coach so you try to balance there with somebody else see work and then you know play call and on top of the one the whole general overseeing of a team that's difficult so it's early and I haven't pushed the panic button because the game they played Monday night the 49 out of Steve Pence is damn good and they've been getting better over the last 4 seasons and there's a lot of top 5 d. Place now so I wouldn't push the panic button just yet but it's obviously has taken them some time to gel with each other and try to figure out who's plan what role so but I but I think most people are pretty shocked at the start of the browser having especially with the talent they haven't roster and I tell you the counterpoint to that just to bracket that Seahawks this week at the Patriots the number one defense right now in the n.f.l. The following week a trip to Denver after that a game against the Bills are playing lights out the fences this is going to get a whole lot easier for this team oh no it does it and this is what we've been waiting to see you know the taco in a field is that our offseason that now you know it's no more talking it's now doing but if I'm for the kitchen of the message and I'm sit in that locker room as guys we've only played 5 games and we still have 11 games to go it doesn't get any easier but we have to this is when the you talk about the history of an organization when do you start feeling like you're the Browns again and you and. He has to do a good job of reminding them we're not the Cleveland Browns of old 'd but it's hard because everything is seeping back and to look into their you know the thought process you know all we just say Cleveland Browns are we different it's a really am a home that point that they're not the same clean the Browns but if you don't feel all right so speaking of getting it down on the field in which team is which here's a question for you are the Dallas Cowboys a team we saw the 1st 3 weeks play in the Redskins in the dolphins in the Giants or are they the team that really struggled against 2 of the top tier teams in the n.f.c. Including you know taken one on the chin at home a they made up some ground late in the game against the Packers last week but they were down big at home the Green Bay You know I'm leaning more toward the team us all the last 2 weeks you know I can't we've seen them with your most recent before mysteriously you are and what we're recognizing with the Cowboys is that often if they don't get the run game going on with it is a different team in that we've heard this from players who say hey we fall calm comfortable and confident that that has the ball in his hand we got a really good chance of winning but I think what really surprised me more than anything was the Cowboys defense and how they played against the Packers I didn't believe Aaron Jones had a chance to have that kind of day against them and the Packers just spread them out and they ran basically Adam with their nickel package on the field and they could not stop that so that was more concerning to me than what I saw from that Prescott but yeah now this down the time of finances but yeah I'm more inclined to believe that what was in the Cowboys is a very inflated team that people always want to say they're good and they never live up to that and we haven't seen that yet in my nuts or are we in a situation it seems like the gap is getting bigger in the National Football League in terms of you know you get a couple of teams that are sitting up near the top of the heap and there are 4 in one teams an unbeaten teams going into week 6 but you've got other teams that are at the bottom. Right now in terms of the standings the Jets the dolphins the Cincinnati Bengals the Washington Redskins in you can even add the Atlanta Falcons the Arizona Cardinals into that that teams that haven't played very well it looks like there is a gigantic gap right now between the top teams and the teams that aren't get it done if Phil is that way right guy like you look at the teams and you say specially in the a.f.c. Like Who are the teams in the a.f.c. That people are I mean that's Patriots and now the Chiefs have they've shown that they're not invincible but after that you'd be hard pressed to get people to agree like who's that 3rd team in the a.f.c. The all the n.f.c. Has a little bit more teams got the Saints you don't see the Seahawks 49 ers have to me are probably the 2nd best team I think they've made that jump my being in but yeah it's like the haves and have nots have had a larger gap and it got to feel that and this is not within a foe one of you know they want to parity they want to seem to be a little bit more close and they competition but for whatever reason we're not so we're not seeing of that right now and I don't look as good for football or bad but you know I think that's a t. I obviously have the season goes along we should see a little bit more of more teams kind of looking more competitive than what we're seeing right now one would hope t.v. And so just having angry even on mines you know just you know not ever let like a lot of them really allowed to complain like it wasn't an option so you just get you work done and you know be appy it just it changes your mindset you think it's just life in general you know like this is like a paradise right now and I call work and play like I'm doing the same thing that love to do and I get paid for at the same time so that it makes me appreciate you know like like you said I had. Well like I said I Yes I I hated it hated build the fence but you know it's allowed me to appreciate the things that I get it do and choose nowadays that's a lesson I think that a lot of people could take a lot of younger people could take in terms of the way they look at what they do I'm going to bring another lesson and now you get to the chargers for the 1st time and one of the 1st things that you do is you go into your head coach's office to try to find out what it is you need to do to do the job the right way and to be able to make the team what motivated you to do something like that because we don't see people do that a whole lot and clearly it worked out. Going back on that I was so nervous I should have been so nervous to go talk to that and talk to coach and then he just the way he handled himself around the locker room and just around the team you just strictly business and you know especially to know everything I'm a rookie and come in and I don't know anything and I still struggle and have that the best camp and Ok cam and he didn't even know my name you know to put on top and I remember I mumble and some stuff like it's all Mike I love the way coaches. Try to speak. But yeah for the purpose of I want to see it I want to know know his opinion as far as like what do I need to do make this thing like I was in an opportunity that you know I thought would only come one time as far as making a football team We're talking with the Chargers Austin Eckler you look at where your team is right now and I think that everybody is pretty clear that this is a very talented group and you know as you pointed out a little bit earlier you want to see if you can figure out a way to score some points it hasn't gone the way that you've wanted to is it hard to not feel discouraged by the start that you've gotten is it easy to kind of sweep all that behind in the rearview mirror and push ahead. And say the easy some that we have to do just because you know we've been in a situation where even when a game they were. The last 4 games total we've already got 2 losses this year on the season this week 5 so I think it is hard frustrating just because like you said we know we do have the talent you know we went to games and you know the results not come in but as I say you know some we have to move on for you know Coach Lang came and tried team is I guess the last 3 games I guess what I'm open around here is not going to waste any more games in the future so you know how you know new check the you know began again you have talked about the fact that there's a lot of different things that you guys are capable of doing now even with Melvin back again I think the world out there would turn around and say Well Melvin Gordon's back so that means that Austin's not going to play not going to get as many touches that type of thing that's not the way you're looking at this is it I don't know I don't I don't have never really looked at that you know just because of you know I will come back you know that I'm going to get less I mean I'm sure I'm going to get last touches because he got more often but you know I I've never looked at it like I was the backup I've always thought of just starting in my role you know on that charge sure I'm behind of them but I thought I start in my role like on just special teams and I can be tired for you know response which I think I'm a different back him different look you know I go in I'm starting that that Ross my role and you know when I was gone my roles were softened and now he's back so my so much more you know so to the back up as far as in special teams as well so I don't know if the best I work on my craft in my role so I know a lot of people thought I was like a touches you know I'm still going to get touches well but it's just my role is just changed last thing the air guitar thing is something that you have worked on at all or is it exactly the same right now as it was the 1st time you conceived of it. We've been changing it up a little bit you know people in on it still need to get it a little coordinated better but you know it's slow evolving and you know people always ask the leg and say that and I can I put my signature you know people you know in public so seem as though you thought of that yeah yeah Me Yeah you know they they can put a picture to lay some scene and put a face to it but I mean I don't I ever think I would say just because you know I like rocking out and you know just that feeling of just an electrifying feel and so prized as same probably not a bad idea if it ain't broke don't fix it Eckler in the chargers take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night football here on Westwood One Our coverage starts at $730.00 Eastern bid on authentic game more crucial catch products to join the n.f.l. I think that's why I think. I said I don't think I was such a good story was thinking so you know because. The Giants thing might. Be my turn around the whole time to be doing my character and what that shows me my batting is so with this game you understand no one says he knows what's happening I didn't want to lose any time but to be a looks like they got the 1st down and they did.
