Cbs 2 news continues to follow the latest developments stemming from the mass shooting that left 14 dead and 21 wounded in San Bernardino california. California. Law inforcement officials are now saying tashfeen mailk, one of the shooters and the wife of fellow conspirator syed farook, plegeded alliegence to isis and the groups leader on facebook. Those messages were posted under an alias, and then deleted right before the attacks. Family members of the shooters say theyre still shock that they would do Something Like this. So many things i asked myself. I ask myself if i had called him that morning or the night before, asked him how he was doing, what he was up to. If i had any inclination, maybe i could have stopped Officials Say theres no indication yet whether isis directed or ordered the attack. Both Tashfeen Malik and syed farook were both wednesdays shooting is triggering memories for a lot of people in Johnson County. 24years ago, grad student gang lu went on a shooting rampage at the university of iowa. Lu was upset that his dissertation didnt win prizes that his former roommate had gained. He killed four people before turning the gun on himself. In the years since that rampage, authorities throughout the corridor have worked to improve their responses to situations like this. Cbs 2 News ReporterMellaney Moore explains how Emergency Management in Johnson County already is learning from this latest mass shooting. Unfortunately theyre kind of the new normal. Like a fire drill or tornado drill, Johnson CountyEmergency Management says its important to be prepared for an active shooter situation. You can go back as far as gang lu shooting on the university of iowa or columbine or Virginia Tech or the sandy hook shooting and you see continuing patterns of more and more of these types of aware of their surroundings and inform Law Enforcement if they see anything suspicious. Locally since sandy hook weve trained over 7,000 people throughout the community, utilizing over 21 instructors from different Law Enforcement agencies. Emergency management helps make it possible to provide active Shooter Training in Johnson County to Law Enforcement and citizens. A big part of their training is called alice or alert, lockdown, inform, counter and escape. Its actually pretty sad that weve had another such an incident in our country, but it no longer, i guess it no longer surprises me. Pulkrabek says that makes local Law Enforcement agencies want to be prepared and training is happening more frequently. Because its happens so often around the country and its shown that it can happen anywhere, small communities, large communities. Emergency management says incidents like the one in San Bernardino influence future training decisions, exercise spent. The more you see these events unfold throughout the us, the more you see training focused on responding to those events. Emergency management says it has Different Levels of training you or your workplace can participate in. Cbs 2 news also spoke with linn county sheriff Brian Gardner about the shooting. Shooting. He tells us his department provides training for active shooter situations not only for its staff, but several businesses as well. Well. Sheriff gardner also says deputies and swat teams train together for mass shooting situations. Were also hearing reaction following, the arrests of four fifth graders, and a High School Student for a bomb plot in new Jersey Police say the students were planning to set off a device during a field trip to Clifton High School this past wednesday. But it would not have gone off because it didnt actually have any explosives in it. Parents were notified of the plot yesterday through an automated phone call from the School District that said there was no danger. That message has some saying taking the situation as seriously as they should. Thats our children, our children, our grandchildren in that school. Are you for real . And its no big deal . It is a big deal, especially whats going on in the world today. How can it not be a big deal . Deal . All five students have since been released to their parents. They are all now suspended from school. Testimony is underway again this morning in the trial for edward cusic. Cusic. Hes the man accused of killing his mother in cedar rapids three years ago. On thursday the prosecution wrapped its case and the defense called their first witness. Cusics brother told jurors the defendant was taking medication after suffering several concussions in high school and work injuries. A psychologist also took the stand to discuss cusics mental state at the time of the killing and said he took several prescription drugs that day. The defense is expected to wrap its case today, but the prosecution is expected to call a rebuttal witness before closing new at noon the owner of a lisbon bar will pay a fine after being accused of assaulting a customer. This past summer, customer Charles Russell said daron rubner attacked him and kicked him out of whiteys bar and grill when russell brought his service dog inside. Rubner says that wasnt the case and situation was sparked by a drunk patron. Charges were filed after police reviewed Surveillance Video from the bar. Court records show rubner pleaded guilty to assault yesterday and was ordered to pay a 500dollar fine. The former frontman of the rock group stone temple pilots, has died. Died. Scott weilands manager confirmed his death late last night. Weiland, who was also the former lead singer of velvet revolver, struggled with Substance Abuse for years. Weilands Facebook Page says he died in his sleep while on a tour stop in bloomington, minnesota. He was traveling with his band, Scott Weiland was 48 years old. Weiland was scheduled to play in eastern iowa tomorrow at spicolis grill and the reverb rock garden. The venue posted a status late last night once news broke of weilands death. On a narrow vote, the senate rejected proposals for expanded background checks and to make it harder for those on government watchlists to buy guns.
