Right now 20 counties included in the governors disaster emergency proclamation. The state helped out with resources like thousands of sandbags, water pumps, flood barriers and National Guard troops. The governor has seen how much iowans learned from 2008 and the way everyone pulled together. It makes him proud to be and when the preparations were being made. Its great to come back here today and pass the crest and things are looking up. I think we avoided what could have been a terrible disaster. Reporter the Group Estimates there has been more than 4. 3 million in damage than the governor can request a president ial declaration that could make fema money available for recovery efforts. If you are among the fortunate residents who are allowed to go home here are tips to keep in mind. Check for standing water in your basement or drains and if you find some near electrical outlets or wires, call your Energy Provider and get the power turned off. At that point a licensed contractor has to repair the damage. To verify if your contractor is licensed, call the number on your screen turn the lights back on, have the city inspect the area to make sure its a. Another danger to keep in mind is Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Generators, water heaters and gas powered equipment can release toxic fumes of not properly maintained. As the community scrambled to officials remind you to keep it outside. We have been fielding questions today from people wondering how to get rid of sandbags. Joe huisinga is live to tell us how the cleanup will begin. Reporter as the community struggled to protect the city they build hundreds of thousands of sandbags and contractors to collect the asking people to leave them at their residences. The city is working with private contractors to collect the bags free of charge from residents a to wait for collection you can take them to the cedar rapids linn county solid waste agency. Regular disposal fees apply if you do that but the city hopes to reuse as much of the sand from the bags and barriers as they can. We can always use the material and contractors and information out. As i mentioned in the press conference, recycling and reuse of the material is important and we want as little the material as possible to end up in a landfill. Reporter the city has suggestions on what to do with the extra sand and echoes from cleaning up oil spills to using it as traction on sidewalks and driveways over the winter. Chief jerman says parks is the third child i and killed in cedar rapids and the second by accident with a gun. He says deaths rapids. She is the second to be shot and killed by accident with a gun. He says deaths like parks are 100 preventable and concerned with the amount of guns stolen and is pleading with everyone to properly secure your guns so guns are lethal weapons. There is another 15yearold boy in an 18yearold man named for interfering with official acts in the gun used in the shooting has not been recovered but a second gun was recovered at the scene. From there it steps down and towards the weekend by sunday morning we should be down to 12 feet and eventually below 10 feet early next week. When the mississippi floods this time of year there has to be widespread rain and thats the case over the last three months. So thats at 17. 38 feet in dubuque and expected to crest at a moderate level of 18. 1 feet. That is at the river bridge in dubuque. Lets get to the satellite and here are the clouds coming in from the northeast today and winds, clouds and Cool Temperatures. Here and there are a few sprinkles of rain but nothing that amounts to a great deal. The clouds should start to break out a little bit after midnight. Everything on the radar now is very light and expected to stay that way through the evening hours. As far as temperatures go, decorah at 59 degrees and thats definitely falllike. 61 and oelwein. 60 dubuque. 64 cedar rapids and iowa city. The cool air itself across eastern iowa. On the satellite we talked about the upper air low and where it spinning around over lower michigan, it takes the moisture from the gulf of mexico and for us that means mostly clouds. Here and there a few showers. The important part of the forecast revolves around the position of the upper air low and watch what happens as we go through sunday. It wont move very much and goes down a little bit and gets into the nokia and then backs up into illinois. Finally by saturday was back sunday its still working its way out of michigan. The next four or five days a wont move much and that means our weather is status quo around eastern iowa. Not much rainfall but from time to time we have clouds and Cool Temperatures. Rainfall forecast through sunday shows eight that might be a bit of a push. Nothing very exciting in the weather outside of Cool Temperatures we have had the past few days. Forecast tonight has partial clearing in the skies later on and lows in the mid and upper 40s around eastern iowa.
