Us tonight. And we begin with that arrest. The fbi revealing late today an alleged homegrown plot. Authorities say an ohio man, inspired by isis and al qaeda, bought two m15 assault rifles and a huge stock of ammunition. They say he was then headed to the nations capitol, where he was allegedly taking aim at members of congress. Lets get right to abcs senior justice correspondent Pierre Thomas who is working his sources on this. Pierre . Reporter david, tonight, the fbi has arrested what it claims is an Al Qaeda Isis wannabe, hell bent on violence. The plan . An allout assault on the u. S. Capitol and members of congress. The weapons, pipe bombs and semiautomatic rifles to shoot and kill employees and officials. The suspect identified as Christopher Lee cornell, seen here in his High School Wrestling photo, arrested this morning after buying two m15 assault rifles like this, and 600 rounds of ammunition. As soon as the purchase was over and he left the door, several agents came out and tackled him here in the parking lot and took him down. Reporter according to the fbi, cornell, who is only 20 years old, took the final steps today to travel to the nations capitol. The fbi locked in on cornell after a confidential informant came in with a tip that cornell had been posting disturbing messages and videos on twitter, expressing support for al qaeda and isis. One twitter message stated, i believe we should wage jihad under our own orders and plan attacks. At one point, he cites the longdead Anwar Al Awlaki as having already given the thumbs up for such attacks. Cornell is the latest of more than 50 socalled homegrown radicals arrested by the fbi in recent years. Many who saw awlaki as inspiration. And pierre as you know there is a lot of concern about homegrown terror after what we saw in paris last week and the kind of surveillance needed to catch suspects. How did they manage to catch this suspect . Reporter well, they kept him under constant surveillance watching his every move. David, it was a classic sting. Cornell thought he had a partner to help launch those attacks, but that partner was an fbi informant who brought in that tip. All right, Pierre Thomas leading us off tonight. Pierre, thank you. And of course, all of this comes just as isis issues a new call to action tonight, calling on followers to target the west. There is also a chilling new video from al qaeda. The group now saying they ordered that hit on the french, praising the two brothers who carried out the attack on that newspaper and then opened fire on police in the streets. And tonight, what we did not see. The chilling moments from inside that paris grocery store. The third gunman, a weapon in his right hand there, a hostage in front of him. He ordered them to turn off the surveillance cameras. Abcs chief investigative correspondent brian ross with the scene from inside that kosher market. Reporter as terrorists gloated tonight over the paris attacks, new pictures from inside that kosher supermarket brought home the horror for the innocent shoppers caught in the middle. Two people shot dead at the checkout counter. Their bodies left unattended. The gunman, amedy coulibaly, wearing an armorplated vest, confronts a hostage at an exit door. Then orders another hostage to disable the stores surveillance cameras. Coulibaly was killed when police stormed the store. Today, a senior al qaeda leader in yemen claimed responsibility for the paris attacks, in a 12minute tape posted online, calling the two kouachi brothers, who attacked the Charlie Hebdo magazine, heroes of islam. The al qaeda leader said the attack on the magazine was planned and financed by al qaeda and u. S. Officials confirm tonight al qaeda provided at least 20,000. The Al Qaeda Group in yemen has always been the most active operational affiliate of al qaeda, so, this is further evidence that they remain an active group. Reporter whatever advanced planning there was, new video today shows the two brothers barely got away after the initial attack. They opened fire on a police car which backs up, clearing the narrow street for the brothers getaway. Hardly a well thought out escape plan. But across the jihad world today, the paris attacks are being used to encourage more attacks against europe and the u. S. Frenchspeaking isis followers posted this video, urging others to attack now. And brian is with us here on the desk tonight. And brian, your sources have told you before that it takes 20 investigators to track one person, 24 hours a day . Reporter thats right, david. In fact, there are now so many terror threats and alleged plots being monitored by western Intelligence Services that some senior officials in europe are saying publicly and in this country privately, they cannot hope to stop them all. Thats the concern here at home, as well. Brian, thank you. And we all took note today of an image from france. Charlie hebdo, their First Edition since the massacre selling out. In paris, crowds outside newsstands. The magazine typically selling 50,000 issues a week. Tonight, selling 700,000 copies in the first few hours. Up to 5 million copies being printed in the coming days. We have one more major headline on terror tonight back here at home, and lawyers for the alleged boston bomber, dzhokhar tsarnaev, requested a delay in jury selection, claiming potential jurors might be prejudiced by the french terror attacks last week. Well tonight, a federal judge denying that request for a delay. Now, to another story developing as were on the air tonight. A major shakeup at the secret service, after a string of security breaches. Youll likely remember that intruder last fall, sprinting across the white house lawn there, through the front door, past the entrance, right into the east wing, not far from where the first family lives. Well, tonight, late word of sweeping changes, four high profile leaders at the secret service out. Abcs chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl tracking this tonight. Jon, good evening. Reporter good evening, david. This is a dramatic shakeup. A near total gutting of the Senior Leadership of the secret service. This was the last straw. The knifewielding man who leaped the fence and sprinted across the lawn right into the white house in september. It was the most embarrassing in a string of lapses by the secret service. The agents who hired prostitutes in colombia, the armed man who got onto a elevator with president obama, the bullets that hit the white house without the secret service figuring it out for days. A scathing report released last month placed blame at the top, calling the secret service an organization starved for leadership. Secret Service Director Julia Pierson was forced out in october, and a new acting director vowed to do better. And restore the secret services rightful place as the most respected Protection Service in the world. Reporter and now, in a shakeup first reported by the washington post, four more top leaders are being removed. As the acting secret Service Director said in a statement today, change is necessary to gain a fresh perspective on how we conduct business. Jon back with us live now from the white house. Any reaction from the president , the white house tonight . Reporter no reaction tonight, david, on this from the white house. But i can tell you, even in the midst of all these recent foulups, the president has never wavered one bit in his support for the men and women who protect him every day. All right, our chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl tonight. Jon, thanks. Now, to a horrific scene on american highways today, from the south all the way up the east coast. The culprit, freezing rain, black ice. In texas, a bus sliding off the highway, slamming into a moving train below. It was a deadly scene. In north carolina, vehicles sliding off the roads. And further north in virginia so many images coming in the pileups, hundreds of accidents. Ginger zee here with the big change coming, but first, abcs ryan owens from texas. Reporter in a scene one witness simply described as brutal firefighters removed the bodies of ten people from the wreckage of a texas prison transport bus. Two Corrections Officers and eight inmates are dead. Five others in the hospital tonight, after the bus hit a patch of ice on this west texas interstate at about 7 30 this morning. Investigators say the bus driver may have swerved to avoid another icy accident on this overpass west of the city of odessa. It apparently flew off the highway and crashed into a moving Freight Train below. There is a lot of debris and a lot of trash all over the train tracks. Reporter ice also coated parts of the midatlantic this morning. Near raleigh, north carolina, drivers struggled to stay on the road. From spinouts to jackknifed semis. In virginia, troopers responded to a whopping 344 crashes this morning alone. Also tonight, we are hearing the frantic 911 calls from drivers stuck in that massive Chain Reaction crash in michigan last week. Oh, my god. Theres more coming at me. Im trying to get out of the way. Reporter two dozen drivers injured when almost 200 vehicles just kept slamming into each other. One of those semis carrying 40,000 pounds of fireworks. Back here in texas, whatever ice was on the roads will not last long. Listen to this. Here in dallas, last friday, the low was 16 degrees. This friday . Its expected to be in the 60s. David . All right, ryan, thank you. Ginger nodding her head yes on that. A big change coming for much of the country. Reporter yes, a warmup on the way. So many people want that. And just to let you know, weve made it halfway through winter, so, were getting there. But half of the country, almost, is currently covered by snow, so, still some slick spots going through the next three mornings. I just want you to note that that january thaw is coming at us. And so who will benefit from that . Or maybe you dont like it, either way. Chicago, youre going to 40 for a high on saturday. 51, kansas city. Even minneapolis, surging above that freezing mark. It will happen here on sunday, right along the east coast. Boston at 46, raleigh, 55. It looks like we stay closer to average after that, no more of these huge arctic blasts. All right. Happy birthday. Reporter thank you. We turn overseas tonight, and to other news this evening, this story from indonesia. And the haunting new images from the bottom of the ocean tonight. The fuselage of that doomed air asia flight has now been found and it is believed that some of the passengers bodies are still inside. Tonight, there are major new questions about the distance between two major discoveries on the ocean floor. Heres abcs david kerley. Reporter this . Our first look tonight at the midsection of the air asia a320, where many of the 162 on board may be found. Visible, the section of the fuselage from just in front of the wings, as well as part of a wing. This is where the tail section was found. But the black boxes from that tail found more than a mile to the northwest. And a half mile farther away, the Center Section with a wing still attached. The mystery is actually deeper from what we found today. Because we now have major pieces of this airplane that are separated by almost two miles. Reporter many of those questions will probably be answered by the recovered black boxes. But in a move that one safety expert calls shocking, the indonesians, who have just a rudimentary lab, are trying to process the computer chips from those boxes. They say it could take two weeks. A job that would take just a matter of days in the u. S. Indonesians do not have the capability to do sophisticated mishap investigation. But there is some concern that if the indonesians try to do this all on their own that something might get lost in the details. David, you can really hear the frustration there from aviation experts about this delay. But a big question now, the huge distance between the fuselage behind you there and the tail found so far away . Reporter one explanation, david, is when they pulled the tail up, the bottom was gone, made it lighter. Theres a possibility it could have floated for awhile. And the currents are very strong there. So it could have carried the tail quite a distance away from the black boxes and that midsection midsection. All right, david kerley on this investigation from the start. David, thanks. And to another scare for a time today, 230 miles up. The american crew on the International Space station forced to take refuge in the russian wing of the station after alarms warned of a possible ammonia leak. Later wearing their oxygen masks, testing the air. It turned out to be a possible computer glitch. A sensor problem. Everyone okay tonight. Now, to a Major Medical headline this evening, controlling what you eat with help from a pacemakerlike device. The fda late today approving the device that uses electrical impulses to control your appetite. So, lets get right to abcs chief medical editor dr. Richard besser. And this seems to be something completely new. Reporter it is. Its taking a whole new approach to losing weight. The device is implanted under the skin. It puts out an electric impulse that they think interferes with your stomach, telling your brain youre still hungry. And so you eat less. But you were telling me today, this is not for everyone. Reporter its not. Its surgery. So, that has risks. It is only approved for people who are most severely overweight. People who have medical problems from being overweight. You have to have failed other approaches to losing weight. People who have done this, they lost some weight, but not a lot. But it gives doctors another tool and thats a good thing. One more tool. All right, rich besser tonight, thank you. We turn now to the nascar driver who is claiming this evening his exgirlfriend is a trained assassin. But the question will the court buy it . Abcs gio benitez with the tape. Reporter tonight, as nascar superstar kurt busch fights allegations of domestic assault, hes waging war on his exgirlfriend, with jawdropping claims. That 37yearold Patricia Driscoll is a killer. In court tuesday, busch alleged driscoll was a trained assassin, dispatched on Covert Missions around the world. Killing with guns, knives, poison. That she showed him a photo she took of one of her victims. And that she once walked in wearing an evening gown soaked in blood. Driscoll owns a defense contracting company, frontline defense systems. Her work featured in this video now entered into evidence. I am one of the few women who own and run a defense company. Theres a lot of sensitive things that i work on. Most of them youre never going to see. Reporter its a teaser reel for a reality show that never aired. My dad taught me how to shoot when i was 5, growing up in west texas. I really dont care if people hate me for who i am and what i do. Because im not going to change it. Hes telling them to attack the homeland. Reporter busch says driscoll claimed she and another woman were the inspiration for Jessica Chastains character in zero dark 30. Anything you want to say . Reporter driscolls own allegations are serious. Saying busch repeatedly slammed her head against a bedroom wall in september. Certainly its our position that the abuse occurred. Reporter driscoll calls the assassin allegations ludicrous, telling the Associated Press he took the storyline from a fictional movie script shes been working on that he proofread. And busch denies the assault allegations against him. But stands by his allegations of driscolls life as an assassin. Meanwhile, no Assault Charges have been filed. Authorities are still investigating. This is a complicated case, david. All right, gio benitez with us tonight. Gio, thank you. And this just in. Those two American Climbers making mystery at this hour. Reaching the summit of el capitan at oweyosemite national park. The first to free climb to the top. Hugging their families after a nearly vertical climb, 3,000 feet straight up. Only their fingers and toes to propel them. Their fingers raw. But tonight, their hard work paying off and both men on Good Morning America first thing in the morning. There is still much more ahead on world news tonight this wednesday. The shocking video from the car wash. An out of control car plowing right through. Workers scrambling to get out of the way. Should that driver have been behind the wheel . The delicate moment so many families face. Also big news from chipotle tonight, and the concern there. Also a headline coming in from pizza hut. And later, take a look at the water right here. The boaters, and one incredible surprise. That is a hippo and the danger they faced. They didnt even see this coming. Health can change in a minute. So cvs health is changing healthcare. Making it more accessible and affordable with over 900 locations for walkin medical care. And more on the way. Minuteclinic. Another innovation from cvs health. Because health is everything. Ive always loved exploring and looking for something better. Thats the way i look at life. Especially now that i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib a type of irregular heartbeat, not caused by a heart valve problem. I was taking warfarin, but wondered if i kept digging could i come up with something better. My doctor told me about eliquis. For three Important Reasons. One, in a clinical trial, eliquis was proven to reduce the risk of stroke better than warfarin. Two, eliquis had less major bleeding than warfarin. And three, unlike warfarin theres no routine blood testing. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Those three Important Reasons are why eliquis is a better find for me. Ask your doctor today if eliquis is right for you. A dangerous scene at a california car wash. Renewing worry over age and driving tonight. An elderly man behind the wheel. And that tough question so many families face. Heres abcs clayton sandell. Reporter they see it coming, but cant stop it. Employees at this sacramento car wash helplessly chasing an elderly man at the wheel of a speeding, out of control car. Jumping aside as he tears through, crashing on the other side. The man told witnesses he confused the brake and gas pedals. He walked away, but the video is raising a tough question for families of the 33 million seniors on the road today. When is it time to turn over the keys . 500 older adults are injured in crashes every day. Aaa says preventing those injuries means watching for red flags. Look at the car for any unexplained dents and dings. Listen. Are older drivers talking about having more nearmisses, or that other drivers honk and complain. And pay special attention when a driver starts any new medication. Dont talk to your parents for the first time when you are thinking about taking away the keys. Older drivers tell us that the one person they dont want to talk to about their driving is the police. Reporter no one was hurt at the car wash, but tonight, its a cautionary tale for older drivers who want their independence and families who want to keep them safe. Clayton sandell, abc news, denver.
