Tonight the victims of a deadly Southern California bus crash are remembered as teams of investigators try to determine what exactly went wrong. Good evening. Thanks for joining us. Im chris w ynn. Eric thomas has the night off. The collision happened this morning on interstate 10 near palm springs. 13 people were killed including the bus driver and 31 others were hurt. The bus was traveling toward los angeles from a casino and was about an hour into the trip. Abc news president arer abc News Reporter has the latest. Reporter the tour bus crashed into the semitrucks trailer on this desert highway near palm springs 100 miles from los angeles. The force of the collision is plain to see in the mangled wreckage. The entire front of the bus penetrated the back of the big rig. The Highway Patrol said the bus was moving significantly faster than the truck. The speed of the bus was so significant that when it hit the back of the big rig, the trailer, the trailer itself entered about 15 feet into the bus. Reporter an eyewitness said several rows of seats in the front of the bus were crushed by the impact. Firefighters using ladders to remove the bodies. The Highway Patrol gathered the personal effects in paper bags. Heavy machinery were used to pull apart the massive metal wreckage. In almost 35 years i have never been to a crash where there has been 13 confirmed fatal accidents. So it is tough. It is tough for all of us. The injured were taken to three hospitals. One doctor said some of their wounds could have been much worse. This bus struck something that was collapsible. When you usually see someone involved in a high speed Motor Vehicle crash the thing you see are big time broken bones. This was not one of the circumstances that we were faced with. They have yet to identify the victims. We talked to a couple of family members to see if a mother and grandmother survived. Abc news, indio, california. Tonight friends and family of the victims gathered for a memorial at the buses intended destination. Candles were lit in honor of those hurt and killed. Many who paid tribute said they knew and respected the bus driver who died in that crash. Usa holiday operated the bus. The company is based out of los angeles and owns one bus and employs one driver. The bus involved is a 1996 model and they dont believe it had seatbelts. It was inspected on an annual days sis for the past three years. The most recent inspection was in april. No issues were reported with the coach or the driver during that inspection. In other news, people came together by candlelight to remember two men who were killed last weekend. Reporter chris, dozens gathered for a candlelight vigil. It is a quiet, peaceful town that is to the used to the type of violence they saw last weekend. It has been just over a week since this community lost two men because of gun violence and they came together to grieve. You can walk around where it is safe, or at least you think. Deputies say 28yearold Jesse Mariana and nate prodo were shot and killed over a marijuana sales transaction. It happened at a house just outside town where friends say marijuana was being grown for collectives. These are sons and grandsons and nef and nephews and we are hoping nothing like this happens again. A third person, a 23yearold woman was also shot and expected to survive. This man is believed to be connected to the shootings. He is described as 510 and thin with braided hair or dreadlock wearing square wire rimmed glasses. Deputies say he was accompanied by a chunky 52 woman with facial piercings. There is so much darkness around a plant that can bring light that is just really, so much negativity and whatnot that it is baffling. The hope the public can help solve this case by helping deputies identify the man in the photos. He was last seen driving a newer model hyundai sonata. Anyone with information is urged to call the saw noy ma county sheriffs office. Lilian kim, abc7 news. Seven people were wounded in a shooting in east oakland last night. The officers that responded then came under fire. It happened just before midnight at 77th and bancroft avenues. The original shooting happened during a house party a block away on 78th avenue. Police took cover when the shooter began firing on them. The s. W. A. T team was called out to conduct a house to house search of the neighborhood. No arrests have been made. The seven injured victims are all expected to survive. Police are looking for the person who shot and killed a man near the Hyatt Regency in burlingame m officers found the victim in the driveway leading up to the hotel at 5 45 this morning. Investigators say he is a man in his 20s and targeted by the shooters. They also say the victim was not a guest at the hyatt, but they believe he was visiting someone staying at the hotel. The homicide is the first of the year for burlingame. The chp is searching for a sevenmonthold boy taken from the north bay who may be in danger. This is a picture of henry massey on the left. They believe he is with his mother, hannah ashley. The boy was reported missing this morning. The two may be traveling in a silver Subaru Forester with the license plate number 5jk, z255. Tonight thousands of soldiers in california now find themselves in a battle against the military they once served. The pentagon is looking into bonuses paid out a decade ago. Tiff intoe wilson is in the newsroom with the story. Tiffany . At the height of the wars in iraq and afghanistan the National Guard found itself short of troops. They offered signing bonuses of 15,000 or more to reenlist. Tonight nearly 10,000 soldiers have been ordered to repay that money. For more than two decades he served his country in the army National Guard. I was placed in iraq from 2004 to 2005. Those were very precarious situations. I was gone the first year and a half of my older sons birth. After he returned home the california guard offered him a 15,000 reenlistment bonus and 21,000 in student loans. He reupped and then he said the government went back on their word. They went back on the contracts and there were ts not crossed and is not dotted the way they wanted it to and they asked for it back. He refinanced his home to pay back the home. 9700 other soldiers faced similar situations. Money they received they shouldnt have gotten. It was supposed to go to soldiers with skills in high demand. They said they paid guards men who were not qualified. Now they are pound to recoup the money. We dont have the authority to waive these debts. They Hope Congress will step in to help. This Northern California veteran says he feels betrayed. No fault of my own. It is raising my hand and swearing the oath to protect and defend. Struther filed a lawsuit and they waived his repayment. The dash cam video taken this morning shows the officer trying to pull over an suv. You can see the driver pull over to the side and then suddenly take off. The officer starts a chase and then minutes later the passenger takes out a gun and fires 9 rounds at the police car. To make it scarier a woman on a ride along was in the front seat next to the officer. Are you okay . [crying]. Wow, you can hear the woman crying there. The gunfire disabled the police car and shattered the windows. It came within inches of hitting the officer and the woman. She has minor cuts from the broken glass. The officer wasnt hurt. The car was found abandoned blocks away and they are still looking for the suspects. Tomorrow is the last day to register to vote in california. In tonights headlines, the chp is trying to determine what caused a casino bus to crash into a big rig killing 13 people on board. The crash happened just north of palm springs this morning. 31 people were hurt. The bus was on its way back to los angeles. Friends held a candlelight vigil for two men killed last weekend. Someone shot them during an argument over marijuana. Sheriff deputies are looking for this man. He is believed to be connected to the shootings. The pentagon is ordering nearly 10,000 california National Guard soldiers to pay back bonuses they shouldnt have received. Antiwar activist and former senator tom hayden has died. He was a champion of liberal causes and lead the movement to stop the vietnam war. He moved to the Los Angeles Area after getting kicked out of a commune in berkeley. He married actress jane fonda in the 1970s and the two traveled the country protesting the war. They later divorced. Hayden served in the assembly as well as the state senate. He died tonight after a long illness. Tom hayden was 76 years old. Oakland Police Officers came under fire when they responded to president ares of a shooting that left seven people wounded. It is the second time this year officers have been targeted by a gunman. Abc7 News Reporter Cornell Bernard has the story from oakland. At first i thought it was fireworks. But then, no. It was a crazy, chaotic night. Police officers taking cover behind squad cars, guns drawn. Police say someone fired shots at officers responding to a shooting. Luckily no officers were hurt. It was crazy. I heard 15 to 20 gunshots. The original gunfire was coming from a house party. Seven people were shot and wounded. Seven people shot and what do you think about that . I think the violence needs to stop. S. W. A. T teams moved from doortodoor in search of suspects who wounded citizens and fired shots at police. Thats really, really sad. It is actually crazy. It is the second time this year Oakland Police have been fired upon. On july 23rd sergeant nadia clark said someone fired a shot into her patrol car and missed. An arrest was made in the case. Survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing helped pitch in 5,000 to get tommy a new prosthetic leg. He got to play this morning in the teams final game of the season. Enter tornado who was trained from birth to be a service dog specializing in autism and taught to guide kai around danger or help him feel safe when he is agitated. About the moments when the two met, here is why kai cried. Seeing him immediately when he laid dob and that relationship being resip indicated it was breathtaking. The rain is up to the northwest and it will be pushing in tomorrow. It will be rainy brie midday in the north bay and high temperatures in the mid60s. We will see low 70s in the inland east bay. Here is the forecast animation. The rain will be pushing down to northern Sonoma County and as the day goes on by 1 00 in the afternoon we will see a widespread area of rain in the north bay. Nothing significant will befalling south of the golden gate at that point. We will see the rain sweeping southward and eastward and through the central part of the bay area by tuesday morning. The morning commute on tuesday looks like it could be slow and wet and messy as the rain spreads to the south bay and the east bay. By the end of the day on tuesday and into the evening hours we expect the rainfall totals to range from over half an inch in parts of the north bay to a quarter of an inch to a third of an inch in the remainder of the bay area. We have two rainy days coming our way with a cloudy break. Then a stronger year comes in thursday with heavier rain and stronger winds. Then we get to the weekend where we call it unsettled.
