The place looks a little bit like the bar scene from star wars. The only time youll see thousands of geek groupies uniting. Its the annual gathering of the geeks and gamers that has become a marketing boon for hollywood. Well get to that later on in the show. But we begin with a major scare in the air. U. S. Fighter jets launched into action and a s. W. A. T. Team storming a passenger plane after a man on board makes deadly threats. Its a scary time to fly right now after so many Airline Incidents and accidents just this month alone, so lets get right to abcs linzie janis who is at jfk with more this morning. Reporter good morning, dan and bianna. Thats right. That man is scaring other passengers allegedly saying he wanted to blow up canada. Then after that emergency landing, s. W. A. T. Team members taking no chances making sure everybodys hands were in the air. Hands up. Hands up. Hands up. Reporter incredible heartpounding cell phone video of armed officers storming a plane at Torontos Pearson international airport. Hands up reporter terrifying passengers including children as they hunt down a person suspected of making a bomb threat. Heads down heads down, arms up, yelling, the kids were scared. Reporter the Sunwing Airlines flight on its way to panama city friday morning turning around 45 minutes into the flight over West Virginia after police say 25yearold canadian ali sahahi started making direct threats to the aircraft. Other passengers describing him as agitated. Might have to delay you for a bit. There is an aircraft coming in from over the lake. Its going to land runway 33 left and they have a bomb threat. You might see a pair of f16s. Reporter two u. S. Fighter jets escorting the plane carrying 181 passengers out of u. S. Airspace. North American Aerospace defense command, or norad, calling it a precaution. The passenger behind this tape describes the terror. Once he started yelling things about the plane crashing and everyone dying, of course, people were a little taken back by it. Reporter after removing shahi and finding no evidence of a bomb on the plane, Royal Canadian mounted Police Arrested the suspect charging him with endangering the safety of an aircraft. As for the passengers, many were put on a later flight to panama. But it was also diverted landing in jamaica friday evening after a passenger required medical attention. The flight eventually arriving at its destination 12 hours late. Shahi is in custody. He is due to appear in court later this morning for his bail hearing. Overnight his father telling reporters his son suffers from Mental Health issues. Dan. A troubled flight from start to finish there, thank you. Theres another major story were following this morning. We are entering a weekend of Severe Weather in america. 100 Million People bracing for wind, hail and even tornadoes and meteorologist steve rudin who is from our abc station wjla in washington in tracking all of it. Good morning, dan. Looking at the strongest storms to focus across Central Indiana into illinois. Thats where were expecting the potential for those gusty winds, even isolated tornadoes. All of our attention will focus toward the east coast as we move through the day tomorrow. A large swath from boston, new york city to washington, d. C. Under a slight risk, but the jackpot area just around charleston and lexington where well see a higher likelihood for tornadoes. Rain, it could accumulate and we could see flooding across central ohio, northwestern pennsylvania and southern West Virginia. Coming up in just a few minutes well take a look at the rest of the forecast. A warning for millions of americans. Steve, thank you. Were going to turn now to new information on the gunfire sending shock waves through a quiet philadelphia hospital. Police say a patient started shooting while talking to his psychiatrist. The doctor then drew his own weapon ending the confrontation. Police this morning saying that they likely saved many other lives by doing that, and ron is just back from covering the story in philadelphia with the latest. Hey, ron. Hey, good morning to you, bianna. One person was shot and killed alleged by the patient, but police say it could have been much, much worse happening in a small hospital in darby, pennsylvania, a philadelphia suburb. That patient heavily armed and police say on a mission to kill thwarted by the quick thinking, quick acting doctor who happened to be carrying a gun himself. This morning that doctor is being called a hero. He allegedly killed one person, but police say 49yearold Richard Plotts almost certainly would have killed more had he not been stopped in the shootout with his own psychiatrist. If the doctor did not have the firearm, hed be dead today, and i believe that other people in that facility would also be dead. Reporter the brother of social worker, theresa hunt, killed in that shootout agrees. Thank god for the doctor who was actually armed, i think, was incredible, what he did. Reporter according to Law Enforcement officials, plotts who prosecutors say had a long record of arrests and mental illness, arrives at mercy fitzgerald hospital around 1 30 in the afternoon on thursday. Around 2 20, plotts and hunt enter dr. Lee silvermans office. Minutes later an argument breaks out. Dr. Silverman tells police that is when plotts pulls a revolver from his waistband and fatally shoots hunt then turns on the doctor. They say silverman gets his own gun from a pocket and the two men Exchange Gunfire in the small office. Silverman is wounded but escapes. Plotts is critically wounded and is captured by two other hospital workers. Police say he was carrying 39 extra bullets. Crime scene photos obtained by abc station wpvi show the aftermath of the gun battle, windows shot out and bloody handprints on the carpet. Now theresa hunts brother is wondering why the Family Member known to familiy members as mother theresa had to die. Im angry at the gentleman who did it and id like to know why. Plotts is in Critical Condition but is expected to survive to face murder charges. Dr. Silverman was wounded in the hand and grazed in the head by a bull debt lew he is okay. Now, it is hospital policy that weapons arent allowed on the premises by anyone but security and it appears that dr. Silverman had been bringing his licensed handgun to work for years. We dont know why but today his hospital is praising him for his brave action and looking forward to welcoming him back to the hospital. Saved so many lives that could have been lost. Police say he did, indeed. Ron, thanks. Thanks, ron. There is growing outrage this morning over how the nfl is handling a case of Domestic Violence involving a star player. Take a look at this video of ray rice from the Baltimore Ravens dragging his then fiancee unconscious out of an elevator. The nfl has now suspended rice for two games which critics are calling a mere slap on the wrist and abcs byron pitts is on the story. Good morning, byron. Good morning, dan. And slap is right. By most accounts the nfl has been caught off guard by the harsh pushback and questions, did it address the seriousness of what happened . One player was suspended three games for a bar fight, and one rookie got a fivegame suspension for taking freebies in college. Espns Keith Olbermann seemed to speak for many with his outrage. As for ray rice, who pleaded not guilty to third degree aggravated assault, he took responsibility for his actions last may with his wife beside him. You know, failed miserably. Reporter rice entered a Pretrial Intervention Program and if completed wont serve jail time. Now, reports today say the league took it easy on rice in part because of his good guy reputation and a plea from his wife for leniency but, dan, regardless of their reasoning, many believe on this, the nfl simply got it wrong. Well, its just striking when you see the comparisons to how people get punished for steroid use or taking freebies. Really striking. Byron, thank you. Israel has agreed to the short humanitarian ceasefire after rejecting a longer truce proposed by secretary of state john kerry. This residential neighborhood sajaiya as taken some of the heaviest hits. This is the first time its been safe for us to come. Overnight, two Israeli Soldiers were killed in Ground Fighting. Many palestinians too including 20 members of a single family. The full ceasefire cant come soon enough. Inside one hospital, we found a miracle, one of the youngest casualties of this war. Why . We begin with breaking news overseas. The u. S. State department has shut down the u. S. Embassy in libya after fighting between libyan militants in the immediate vicinity has escalated. The state department is warning americans not to travel to libya and is urging all americans current currently there to leave immediately. U. S. Diplomats have been evacuated under military escort. The neighboring tunisia. Back in the u. S. , nearly 500 firefighters in california are battling a massive blaze about 45 miles outside of sacramento. A huge plume of smoke is blanketing wine country in northern california. So far the blaze has torched nearly 600 acres and is only 20 contained. 40 nearby homes have been evacuated. And, meanwhile, in Washington State Officials Say a total of approximately 300 homes, twice as many as previously estimated, burned in the largest recorded wildfire in that states history. And a manhunt is under way in philadelphia for two men who allegedly carjacked an suv and then plowed into a group of bystanders with that vehicle killing three children, siblings and critically injuring their mother. The family was selling fruit on a Street Corner for their church when the carjacking occurred and the suv struck them. The suspects ended up crashing that vehicle into a tree and then fleeing on foot. The person whose car stolen was critically injured in that crash. And ohio states marching bands director is vowing to clear his name after he was fired over charges he promoted a culture conducive to sexual harassment. On friday the marching band of the best damn band in the land went marching on but without their now former director jonathan waters. Waters is accused of knowing and failing to stop the hazing rituals that included students pressured to march in their underwear and perform sexually themed stunts. Waters attorney said his client became a scapegoat for behavior that occurred before his leadership. Take a look at this. Its a river in china has mysteriously turned blood red. Its really hard to imagine going through this but there is some relief this morning for these angry passengers. You know, weve all experienced some sort of flight delay or cancellations but imagine this as you mentioned sleeping here on the floor with nowhere to go for several uncomfortable days. This morning, stranded flyers are finally home after an epic delay at l. A. X. Its just been horrendous really. Reporter the Norwegian Air shuttle flight didnt get off to a flying start. The 285 passengers spending three days stuck in the airport. Some of them forced to sleep on the terminal floor. Others were a bit more lucky. The first night we basically went to a hotel and begged for a room. Reporter the flight to london was supposed to leave wednesday, but because of mechanical problems, it was delayed and delayed and delayed. Flyers getting fed up. If i could afford another flight i would but i cant. And speaking out. Might go with a Different Airline next time. I think their response has been really just appalling. They havent been able to provide us with enough information. Well start this half hour with a controversial murder case raising questions about how we treat juvenile offenders in the country. Four teenagers in elkhart, indiana, convicted of murder even though none of them actually fired the shot that killed their friend or even had a gun on them. Theyve become known as the elkhart four and abcs juju chang has the story. Reporter in the quiet suburb of elkhart, indiana, five young friends gather on this porch and make an impulsive decision. Someone suggests finding a house to rob. They could use some extra cash. It was just finding quick money. We never planned to hurt anyone or, you know, to even confront anyone. Reporter they settle on a home they see every day, the one just across the street. The first thing i heard is gunshots. Reporter the teens broke in thinking the owner wasnt home, but he was and he had a gun. Did you know you had been shot . No. I felt something warm and came up with a handful of blood. Thats when you realized. Thats when i realized i was shot. Reporter and then blake realizes something else. His 21yearold friend Denzel Johnson is slumped next to him. Shot in the chest. Bleeding heavily. He died in your arms . He died in between like right in between me and jose. Reporter what started out as a teenage lark has left one of them dead and now the surviving teens are accused of a crime much bigger than a breakin. They called me and said he had been arrested for murder. Reporter felony murder because when someone is killed during certain crimes, in this case, burglary, everyone committing the crime can be held responsible. You home invade a home, is it foreseeable the homeowner is going to shoot you, and the answer is, yes. Reporter the trial lasts four days. Charged as adults, the teenagers were found guilty. With their sons sentenced to 50 plus years behind bars, the moms are fighting to overturn what they say are unjust and cruel sentences. Were hoping we got so many advocates maybe we can do something about this so no other kids have to go through this. Were going to fight with everything we have. Take a look at this impressive dust storm, otherwise known as a haboob. This is what happens when you get these strong heavy rains, 1 to 2 inches can fall over a short period of time and this huge dust storm moved over the city. Can create winds upwards of 40 to 50 miles per hour. Its going to be hot in phoenix later this afternoon, 107 degrees for a daytime high. If youre looking for relief from the heat across the west, head over to san francisco. Highs there in the lower 80s. The heat and humidity continues to build across the southeastern part of the united states. Temperatures range from the upper 80s to middle 90s in nashville, and then as we look at our rain totals or the best chance for our Severe Weather, midpart of the country later on this afternoon, Central Illinois into indiana could be looking at isolated tornadoes, gusty winds and heavy downpours.
