This friday night flareup comes after what had been 24 hours of relative calm but then a rush of emotion. Locals furious over the fact that Police Released this videotape allegedly showing Michael Brown robbing a Convenience Store moments before he was shot and killed by an officer. Yeah, a crowd of supporters calling this an attempt to smear the victim. We have Team Coverage this morning, and we start with alex perez who is on the ground in ferguson. Alex, good morning to you. Reporter hey, good morning, dan. We actually had to switch locations this morning because of safety reasons. Now, those protests began peacefully but overnight turned violent, as many as 200 people coming headtohead with police. Overnight the shaky calm in ferguson is shattered by more violence and looting. Protesters blocking streets throwing bottles. Police in Armored Vehicles and carrying militarystyle rifles responding with smoke bombs. This coming hours after the name of the officer that shot and brown was revealed. The officer that was involve in the shootinpq brown was Darren Wilson. The Ferguson Police chief naming officer Darren Wilson after a week of mounting pressure to identify the officer. Officer wilson is a sixyear veteran of the force and has had no prior disciplinp y incidents. At this home in st. Louis where neighbors say he lived, no sign of wilson. Police confirming wilson has been relocated after a number of threats. Authorities friday also releasing this liquor store Surveillance Video. Police say this shows Michael Brown 15 minutes before the shooting allegedly taking a box of cigars without paying. Then shoving the manager who went after him. Overnight that very liquor store becoming the scene of violence and looting. Protesters seen exiting the store with lottery tickets. Family members calling the Surveillance Video a distraction. It infuriated us, and it just adde to the distrust. The issue is when Michael Brown raised his hand and was kneeling to surrender, why did the Police Officer continue to fire and kill this young man . Reporter police also saying the officer who shot and killed brown didnt know brown was a suspect in a robbery and had initially stopped brown for blocking traffic. Because they were walking down the middle of the street. Hands up, dont shoot. Hands up, dont shoot. Reporter and those protesters expected back out here again today. Now to the sp in charge of the crisis, captain ron johnson, calling for calm as the leader of Security Operations and assuring the community that he wants justice just as much as they do. Reporter thursday the governor gave him the job of n fergusons troubled streets. Today we woke up and were all still happy and were all still hugging and were all still commuicating. Theyre asking for answers and im gup anteeing im going to get them those answers and were going to continue. Reporter johnson is a son of st. Louis, born in the 50s. He joined the Highway Patrol in 1987 when there were fewer africanamericans in police work. In the middle of a march against police there he was side by side he says he doesnt want his neighbors to ever fear his badge. We need to make sure justice is done. We need to make sure that everybody can walk these streets and we need to make sure that i dont have to fear if i can walk the streets. And now to the other story breaking overnight, two arrests in the case of those young amish girls allegedly kidnapped from their family farm stand. Police tracking down the suspects, a man and his girlfriend, and abcs gio benitez has been on this story from the jump and has an exclusive interview with the people who helped rescue the girls. Reporter overnight a dramatic end to a kidnapping ordeal. Investigators zeroing in on a house confiscating cars, and police now say 39yearold Stephen Howells ii, a nurse, and his girlfriend, 25yearold nicole vaisey, abducted those two little amish girls selling vegetables wednesday night. Girls there. Things that they saw, things that they remember wq e very influential and getting us to this point so quickly. Reporter authorities rushing the pair into a late night arraignment. Each charged with two counts of kidnapping. Any comment . Reporter wednesday night police say 7yearold delila and her 12yearold sister fannie were working their familys vegetable stand near oswegatchie. Police say a vehicle pulled up and took the girls, then a shocker, more than 24 hours later, Authorities Say the alleged captors set the girls free 30 miles away from home on rain. Starving, the children knocked on the first door they could find. Jeff and pam simpson opened up that door. They were really scared. I knew instantly it had to be the ones that were missing. Reporter in an exclusive interview with abc news, they say they helped care for the girls feeding them. They ate that watermelon in 30 seconds. He says immediately they all jumped into the car and went straight home. The girls just ran right in the house straight to their parents and then their father came out and shook our hands. Reporter this morning charging documents allege howells and vaisey planned to inflict physical injury. Your team was able to interview the children and the defendants. The defendants gave us a voluntary interview. The children were interviewed and between the two, we were able to come up with this set of charges. Reporter this morning, relief in this small town. And back out here at the county jail, those alleged kidnappers are being held without bond. They have not yet entered any plea. If convicted, they could face 25 years to life in prison, paula. Wow, gio benitez in upstate new york. Thank you very much. Now to what could be a devastating blow to notre dames upcoming football season and some past ones. Four of the teams key players including one big star have been suspended while the school looks into charges that they cheated in class. Ron is here with the story and, ron, this coming on their season kicks off in just two weeks. It really does, paula. As any sports fan can tell you they are a perennial football powerhouse named as the top team in the country and four committing serious academic violations allegedly which could sideline them perhaps permanently. When the fighting irish practiced this week, there was no indication that the school whose name is practically synonymous with bigtime College Football was about to be rocked. Four of its best players under investigation for suspected academic cheating. Integrity is at the heart of our mission as a university. Academic dishonesty strikes at that heart. Reporter yahoo sports first reported that the four players would be benched pending the investigation by the school. On friday notre dame said it uncovered what it called evidence that the players had someone else do their schoolwork for them. If this turns out to be just a group of players on their own trying to get by in a class or two to stay eligible as opposed to some sort of systemic cheating, then its much more of an institutional issue than an ncaa issue. Reporter suspensions would not just affect the four players but the entire football program, which just two years ago went undefeated in the regular season and to the National Championship game. Notre dame now says it will voluntarily forfeit all of the games it won with the four players on the field if ultimately they are found to have cheated. Academics will come first for notre dame, and they wont be afraid, i dont believe, to bite the bullet and take a significant hit on this. Reporter although the colleges internal investigation is continuing, no one has been suspended yet. Obviously notre dame fans would love to have this resolved by the first game, august 30th against rice. I dont think thats very likely. And the irony here is that notre dame has a stellar reputation for academic achievement, academic achievement by its Football Team boasting one of the highest Graduation Rates of any college in the country. That threatened by potentially the biggest cheating involving notre dame athletes in its very storied history. Well see how this plays out in coming days and weeks. Yeah, so much pride in their academic program. Really. They seem intense on maintaining it. Ron, thank you. Governor rick perry has made recent headlines with his tough talk on immigration, but its the hardball politics of texas now at the center of a felony case against him. Rick perrys second act was well under way. Another white house bid believed to be just around the corner. But this morning hes charged with two felony counts in texas. The grand jury today returned a twocount indictment against James Richard rick perry. Reporter count one, abuse of power. Count two, coercing a public official. The charges stem from his decision to veto funding for the states Public Integrity unit which investigates public corruption. A District Attorney in the unit was arrested for drunken driving and belligerent conduct. He wanted her out, but she refused to step down, but prosecutors say his conduct amounted to intimidation. I took into account the fact that were talking about a governor, but when it gets down to it, the law is the law. Reporter overnight his attorney called the charges outrageous and appalling saying this clearly represents political abuse of the court system, and theres no legal basis in this decision. It may be a difficult legal case to prove, lawyers tell abc news, but the indictment presents fresh political trouble. His rehabilitation tour was going strong. Its been nearly three years since this. Commerce and, lets see i cant the third one i cant, sorry. Oops. When we caught up with him in iowa, he was looking ahead with optimism. Guilty of false impressment, guilty of poisoning as charged reporter and on and on it went. For the jury, there was not much to deliberate taking less than four hours to find pedro bravo guilty of all seven counts he was charged with including the premeditated murder of his friend, Christian Aguilar in september 2012. Bravo unrepentant to the end. I did not kill Christian Aguilar. Reporter the judge responding this is your day of reckoning. You took his past, everything he had been. You took his present, everything he was, and you took his future, everything that he would have been. Reporter until the court stripped him of his life as he knew it. I sentence you to natural life in prison with no possibility of parole. Reporter aguilars family stoic throughout. Breaking down streaming out of the courtroom and falling into each others arms. How do you feel . I dont know if i have words really to describe this. Reporter on that soggy september night police say bravo strangled his friend aguilar in a fit of jealousy over this woman, erika friman. She had been bravos high school sweetheart. But in college she was dating aguilar. Bravo then allegedly buried his buddy in a shallow grave an hour from gainesville but refused to tell police or aguilars family where it was. After the verdict aguilars father spoke. Now in the minutes after the trial and the verdict, are you ready to forgive . Not yet because pedro bravo didnt show any signs of repent. Lets bring in abc news legal analyst ryan smith this morning. Ryan, good morning. Thanks for coming in. We appreciate it. Sure. Were you surprised at how speedy the verdict was . I was not. Not when you have a mountain of evidence against you like pedro bravo did. They had videotape of him picking up what prosecutors call a murder starter kick, duct tape and shovels and things like that. They had motive which they didnt even have to prove here, this relationship budding between aguilar and his exgirlfriend, and not only that, dna evidence and blood evidence in that car. That stacked up against him and made it almost impossible for an acquittal. Bravo took the stand in his own defense. What was the strategy behind that . Well, he had to, and thats the surprise here. He had to take the stand because he actually gave a Police Interview beforehand where he explained what happened for hours. Typically thats a dream for the defense because theres your story in court, and youre not getting crossexamined, but he had so many inconsistencies, so many things that didnt match up that he had to get on the stand and explain himself again and offer explanations to those inconsistencies, and he did a terrible job. He laughed. He was uncomfortable, and in so many ways he made it even more confusing. And when that happens, the jury doesnt find you credible. They cant buy your story, and in that way, he stuck with what he says on the stand and in those tapes. Ryan, we really appreciate your analysis this morning. Thank you. Sure thing. Fergusons police chief disclosed the identity of officer Darren Wilson, a veteran officer after a week of mounting pressure to say publicly who shot brown. And serious legal charges lodged against Texas Governor rick perry. A grand jury in texas indicted perry late friday night on two felony counts, one count of abuse of power, the other count of coercion of a public servant. The charges stem from a threat by perry, a republican, to veto state funding for democrat District Attorney rosemary lehmbergs office for her refusing to resign office over a dwi conviction. Paul de gelder stared into the cold eyes of a massive bull shark and realized that he was about to have the fight of his life, and it was all caught on tape. Our ginger zee sat down with him. You lost your foot and your hand to a bull shark attack. What happened . Tell us the story first. Well, i was doing a counterterrorism exercise, i was a clearance diver, an Australian Navy clearance diver and just basically swimming on the surface of the water on my back, and a shark just came out of nowhere, and i looked down and literally came face to face with my worst nightmare. A bull shark attached to me and it just started shaking me and tearing me to shreds and took me underwater because i was yelling, i was running out of oxygen, as well. So i had the pain, the fear of running out of air, and i just thought i was dead. The bull shark in Sydney Harbour has basically changed everything about my life. You went back in, and you swam with the great whites. First time you saw one, what were you thinking . I was blown away by this shark because i had never seen a great white in my life. I had seen many other sharks but never a great white. The funny thing about it was as soon as i see this first great white, and im in awe, andy is behind me putting on a wet suit and getting in the water with it. So, andy, the experience on the show, whats the biggest takeaway well get from the program . You know, sharks are not malicious. Theyre not evil, theyre not really out to get us. Theyre just making their living and professional predators and have to hut, stalk and kill things to survive. They cant go to mcdonalds and, you know, put their credit card down and buy something.
