Might be one of if not the biggest day of the year for Apple diehards it is the 1st time they can get their hands on Apple's new i Phones and greeting customers in Palo Alto this morning was none other than c.e.o. Tim Cook this year the line was perhaps a bit shorter maybe due to more customers opting for online delivery also remember there's not a big design overhaul this year just bigger better and cheaper versions of the i Phone 10 all of this going down just one day after Amazon had its own massive device launched yesterday featuring voice activated home appliances like a microwave to wall clocks car plug ins and more so which of these trillion dollar tech titans will dominate our connected lives in the near future to answer that I've got Andy Cunningham author of Get a look at marketing in the digital age for that she was one of the people who helped Steve Jobs launch the Macintosh in the early days of Apple also with me and c.e.o. Of boomerang and in l.a. Our very own Marc Berman who covers Apple for Bloomberg So Mark what do you make of that are coming into the kitchen are extremely strategic for them as long and the reason being this is really the next. Plea for Amazon and here's why I wouldn't a good. Look at Apple wasn't 1st to smartphones or I don't see. So do you think Apple and they want to be part of the connected home as well do you think Apple can come in from behind here or is Amazon so far ahead it's too late so if you're going from going head to head on one thing you can see how the best product may win but if you think about Amazon strategy they are really perfect of the mit work effort to offer and it's and what I mean by God was once you launch a set of things that are all you have. Developers behind your Amazon advertising dollars behind good and it's really the food network that's going behind making anything and everything successful around the zone so it's not like they're not picking one thing a form or a next a speaker and going to the market saying I'm going to be the best they're really trying to use the as one of the means to drive the broader network effect the need of us. I mean. This is now Steve Jobs always had words about the 2. Facebook says it won't provide the level of support to future presidential campaigns that offer the 2016 candidates only President times campaign took a social network up on its offer of embedding a Facebook status in the campaign a factor which the Republicans 2016 digital director Brad Parr scale said was close to Trump's win but Hillary Clinton's campaign also had big name tech support with good. Then executive chairman Eric Schmidt helping set up political data analysis to talk about all of this Facebook's announcement we are joined by reporter Sara fryer and former Google exact and Republican digital strategist and. I'll start with you what is Facebook going to stop doing and what are they going to continue to do when it comes to presidential campaigns so the way things work as build out is it's politics work it's kind of similar to how it's built out it's work for any other business the more money you spend the more support you get the more hands on . Your office and in the case of the Trump campaign. People coming in several times a week. Even use the term and beds you know these people who are really embedded with the campaign and help them on their strategy which was drastically different than the Clinton campaign strategy now they're pulling back on that sort of thing and they want to do what they want to do is they want to improve their website so that there's a more more broad support for anyone who needs it now I sat down with Brad parse scale a couple of months ago who is now the 2020 campaign manager so he has a job Steve Benen had in 2016 Take a listen to what he told me about how crucial Facebook was in there when I've been very specific the I think Facebook we want in a lot of ways because the president what I think Facebook is the point one percent that delivered his message I think if Facebook wouldn't exist with a lot tougher. And time do you think without this same level of help this time around you know that would be a huge disadvantage for the Trump campaign and others. Go through I think there's a couple things one I want to know what. They did in 2016 they did offer to both campaigns and the Trump team obviously took them up on that offer for more work in terms of going forward I think what's what's lost and sometimes the conversation on Facebook in campaigns is Facebook is. A piece of that I think what Brad has mentioned in other folks that have worked on the team is the amount of testing and the volume of pushed out over time and so that's one of that's a huge factor and so yes Facebook's a platform to deliver that to deliver donations to get people to sign up but the testing and the creative operation they put together is really one of the major things I think that differentiated them from campaign you worked on elections inside Google Google is now being being criticized for being left leaning you've got the president talking Google you've got this video leaking of co-founder Sergey Brin talking about how he felt the election was offensive how soon would it these tech companies regardless of personal political views be engaging with political candidates you know I mean that's the question I did spend time here in Washington d.c. With Google I worked around some amazing folks that regardless of political affiliation were really trying to push forward a message of of more people getting involved in the democratic process and so whether it's Google Facebook Twitter all these platforms you know they're private companies they have a one of their goals amongst many is during the election period is trying to get more people involved in the democratic process and listen. Can communication methods be abused in especially new communication methods Yes but that's been around for as long as people have communicated well in Sarah it's also about trying to make sure that these platforms are metal proof right. Mark Zuckerberg has said it's going to be very very difficult but they're certainly going to try it it's been a rough I mean Facebook internally after Cambridge and a little hit in March with even questioning whether they should have little ads at all that was like one of the things is it more trouble than it's worth and they decided that you know we still need to have but we need to do it differently we need to make it more transparent we need to make it so that we're not at. In a position where people could think we're biased that was the problem with the involvement with the charm campaign is that everyone was like How could you give so much help to one campaign and not the other you know. How does that work why do you do that in Facebook told Congress that that it offered identical support to both but you know obviously the optics of that are are untouchable in this in this era everyone is questioning biases of these platforms and so on how would you advise a political candidate today you know in terms of how they should use technology how said they exploit Facebook to the extent it can be exploited and Google as well as in they're all great platforms to connect directly the president said this many times that he enjoys connecting directly to the people think when you're running for office or a political campaign being able to take your message directly to the voters in your constituents is extremely important I think the other thing around 2016 that sometimes gets lost in the conversation on the media side in the you know using technology is a political football sometimes is that the people that were involved on the 26th were really focused on advertising and sales and mentioned in a day they're trying to work with them as if they were a business to drive you know people have quotas they have revenue targets in these things so a lot of times the conversations you end up talking about algorithms or engineers but in reality the people who are most involved are really those ad sales teams now you're already seeing How 4 the midterm campaigns are handling this but how do you imagine 2020 is going to be different. That's a great question I think so these platforms. Campaign For example Facebook and a lot of the platforms were great for direct response write your e-mail your building there was you were finding new donors getting them to donate more money if those platforms continue to be great direct response partners and platforms in order to convert people into being supporters think people see. Great to have you on the knowing what having the Great to be here say look you worked at a big company up for a long time what do you really mean by imagine it for now I mean we need to think ahead we need creative problem solvers I mean look at what's happening here in Silicon Valley could argue that maybe we need a few more people who can sort of think about the unintended consequences of some of our technology within established organizations that can be so hard to harness the power of change you know how can big companies as big as g 8 be nimble in this new age of technology how will I feel most big companies want to be nimble but then taking the action to do it it's another thing I think you really do need to create almost 2 tracks in a company you need your core a stablish to optimize today business and you need the people who are creating the future and there are different kinds of people with different measurements different funding requirements and it's takes a longer amount of time so how do the people who are creating the future convince the people in the 1st track to do things differently well sometimes that's where you need separate tracks often because you they need to come together for certain key things clearly Oh and you need to set joint goals align them around common metrics but I think also you need these kind of rebel pirates these people who come in even in big companies and kind of try to disrupt what's happening and that is very that creates a lot of tension in the early stages now it's not necessarily apples to apples but do you think it's possible for the G.E.'s of the world to compete with the Amazons and Apple's And Facebook's and Google's today like or is it too late Well I think it's something we have to think about I think look at a company like g.e. Where I work for so long 125 year old company it doesn't get to be that old without knowing a thing or 2 about change so there's a lot we can look at sustainability in these companies but yet the stakes are always higher as you get new companies disrupting but I wonder as investors as people who follow you know we will watch Amazon they're getting bigger more complex the stakes are higher the ability to take risks so is maybe the question Can these a bit more of an acceptance but I also think you can back to your other question look at these traditional companies who've done reinvention what big companies do well is culture and you look at some of the challenges take it down in a way I mean culture is a challenge and I think these companies can learn a lot from some of the established companies that had to figure out adaptation get their culture to move so I think that the scale of companies these newer tech companies can learn a lot from some of the incumbents do you think some of these which of these new big tech companies do you think is the most disruptive all this well I say I think they're all disruptive I think they're the ones who sit and think we're not disruptive all are the ones you start you start worrying about they all have a head start they all have been out there I mean I was in the digital media world when we saw Netflix just as a little tiny you know whisper We started at n.b.c. Were as part of the team that helps you to Hulu we knew that was coming we didn't know how it was going to get there now you look at it 1012 years later but the same forces there are going to happen to Netflix so I really feel like everybody needs to keep imagining forward new scenarios a new alternatives now you're also gets very personal and it's so rare to hear sort of personal lessons from you know somebody who's had the journey that you have you were G.E.'s 1st female vice chair Why did you leave I left because it was a management change John Flannery came in Jeff and no Luft John finer came in new. A leader wants a new team and I think that's what happens often so it was a bit earlier than I expected to leave but yeah I knew new team new guy new team what are the challenges we need to know more about in terms of getting more women into the top top positions like where you were I mean there are so few people who make it to the level of Bath Comstock though you know so many many who should you know what don't they know well I think partly we just need to embrace more difference where we hire people like us I mean it's a human trait we have to overcome I mean you know from the work you've done people have all kinds of excuses why they don't want to hire people who are different I think women for a number of reasons most companies have a good track record of hiring women an undergraduate level and then loose women as they progress in their career so we need to address that issue it's complex we need to have programs that allow women different ways to enter come back in and out of the workforce and and those are happening but it's too slow but the end of the day we just need to make way for more women we need to have a pipeline and that takes time you need to take your time out there finding the future women leaders of your company you have a killer line in my book where you challenge male venture capitalists who had said we're looking very hard for women but we're not prepared to lower our standards and you said well who created the standards and you can't find any women who qualified that's absurd What do you think are the really what are some of the real reasons behind the scenes that more women aren't getting hired more minorities aren't getting hired because you know for half the population. Of people one they don't want to take a risk on something different it's not proven there's just this belief that if they haven't had the same path as off going to the same school have the same kind of job they can't clearly be as capable at this job you document that well I love the whole discussion of meritocracy and even the false promise of meritocracy who's setting the merits and so I'd like to believe many people are well meaning in that but they are maybe thinking through and often exposing themselves and challenging their thinking to say. Is this really true am I doing enough to challenge that belief and so I think I think we just let it pass people are not taking enough risks to hire people who are different disruptive and perhaps potentially going to build a brighter new future it's the risk I think at the end of the day we don't use the word visionary and genius to describe women and yet we use that word to describe the dozens and dozens and dozens of men and how fast do you see change happening people always ask me like how optimistic are you that I could be doing this if I was an optimistic but you know if you've been there in the trenches behind the scenes how fast are we really going to see the numbers shift Well I'm optimistic to feel there's a lot of energy I think there are a lot of people saying we've got to make a change we have to I wish it were faster and frankly for having worked a whole career now 25 plus years I wish there would be more change it's disappointing it's frustrating I see it for my daughters for young women coming up it like some of this should have changed by now you mean the salary issues are still what they are You mean you're still having to work you know much harder prove things much more in a much harder way that how does that possible Beth Comstock former g.e. As You Tube or is like cutie pie I just seen in Tyler Oakley became stars in the entertainment industry would be grudgingly realize their value and started to embrace that and now we're seeing a similar trending sports as the industry starts to recognize professional gamers as athletes which her son is still hard to believe is a real thing this week e.s.p.n. Announced it'll put a professional gamer on its magazine cover for the 1st time in its 20 year history Joining us now from New York Andrew paradise the c.e.o. And founder of skills a mobile e-sports company that runs well into 1000000 competitions a day so Andrew what do you think about putting a 27 year old streamer on the cover of a magazine is this a good role model for kids absolutely. I think he sports is finally reaching the point where it's recognized worldwide just like it's offline and sports so as the name might imply e-sports is just short for electronic sports it's the digital equivalent or online activity that we've recognized for literally thousands of years offline with the sporting community so our gamers athletes absolutely in the same way that you would call any person who plays a game at its pinnacle of excellence or in competitive formats an athlete. Gamers are practicing and. In front of audiences now that range in the millions in fact sports is more popular than many sports so here we have this team or on the cover of one magazine that when do you think you know mainstream people will sort of understand or or start to agree with you. Well there are a couple of different projections that speaks to that so this year you're going to have about $200000000.00 Corinth easiest watch me sports worldwide just as somebody who's watching an hour or more per day and the sports as a movement and thing will be about will have about 2000000000 people who are aware of the sports by the early 20 twentieth's so he's for it has been rising steadily over the last nearly 20 years and we are right now just at the cusp of where you see a transition from competitive gaming to spectator the eye and says and recognition of the sports just like it's offline equivalents now scales as more than $18000000.00 players you can watch it $300000000.00 or so in prizes talk to us about what you actually do skills isn't. What we do is we power game studios to deliver a competitive sports experience for millions of consumers so at the front end of our software consumers log in to the skills network they can then access and play. In literally thousands of different video games where we get power a competitive multiplayer environment we then record and broadcast those tournaments and so you can play in many different varieties of competitive formats using skills thousands of games. So I'm thinking about things around tech addiction you know you can't really play basketball a physical basket playing basketball game for hours on end but you can play a video game for hours on end how do you think about you know the potential downfalls of that well I think in many types of sports there are governing rules and and protections for the consumers of the players if you think about the offline world you know so I grew up playing soccer certainly I would argue I played more than a few hours of soccer a day as a kid in fact you know many many hours per day on the field or just practicing shooting.
