Apparently a parent of a 5yearold, the daughter attended a Birthday Party and after the Birthday Party, the parents decided that the young girl should not write a thank you note to thank people for the gifts she got. Instead, they say in lieu of the thank you note, were going to make a charitable donation. They were basically saying, look, my it is a 5yearold, shes not going to be writing thank you notes, instead well give money to this group. Question is, do you think thats an okay thing to do. Well, lets see what philip said. He said the time for doing something charitable was before the party in lieu of gifts. So now it is going to cost these people twice. You see what im saying . They bought a gift but isnt the i thought it was the receiver writing the thank you note. Thats what i thought too until we just read it. It is. It is the receiver. The girl that got the presents, her parents say, we got all these presents, were not going to write 25 thank you notes, were going to instead give a charitable donation. I think we should know what were talking about before we come on the air. No, heres the thing, should 5yearolds, is that too young to write thank you notes . I dont think so. I tried to teach our kids to do it very early. You know what they have, for a little kid, it is a form, and it says dear and they write out the name, thank you for the and it doesnt have to be the idea of being you can draw a picture. Doesnt have to be an actual written note. You should always send thank you notes. Here is a question. When you go on a date with someone, how much time do you think you have to impress your date . Okay . Or vice versa . Apparently there is a study out there from the Insurance Company called axa and they say you have 12 minutes. How do they know . Because axa had a timer on all the dates people went on. How weird. So people judge really quickly on things like smile, voice tone, eye contact, some basic and two biggest turnoffs immediately are body odor and bad breath. I can understand that. Things that they shouldnt be doing . Well, i think that in this day and age we parents, we tend to i know dr. Sax probably sees this too, we tend to what i call hyperparent. We focus on a lot of the superficial things. Make sure we build them a good resume, make sure get to the right soccer team, football team. But to get boys to develop a strong identity and character, every parent needs to be able to answer three questions in the boys. What do you believe about me, how do you feel about me, and what are your hopes for me . You cant answer the questions on a soccer field or classroom, but if parents spend enough time with their kids to answer those questions over the years, thats where you develop a really strong boy who knows who he is, and hes ready to launch. What do you think, dr. Sax . My big concern is that parents today are unsure about what to do with all the screens. Im seeing so many boys, what they want to do in their spare time is play video games. Sit down with the screen. And the parents are like all the kids are playing grand theft auto and it must be okay, it is not okay, it is your job to turn the device off. What does it do to kids . It shifts them away from the real world to the Virtual World. Mom is like, hey, youre in tenth grade, your grades are going to be on your College Transcript and youre up at 2 00 in the morning playing grand theft auto. Doesnt that matter . He says no. Hesuch more into being the first in his group to finish all the missions in grand theft auto. That matters more. Accomplishment in the Virtual World of the video game matters more. Thats so wild. So scary. There is another important thing that is spending so much screen time does for boys, not just video games, but even on internet. It is very isolating. And even though they say im on facebook, im connecting, theyre not. Theyre isolating from their parents. It is kids to develop a healthy sense of selfesteem need to read their parents, be with their parents, be mentored by their parents, mentored by people of an older generation. It is not just about, you know, sticking with your peers. Kids are very lonely. And electronics makes them lonely. At 15, arent they going to sort of do what they want to do in some cases because they have their own ipads . 15 not too late. They shouldnt have their own devices. They came out with guidelines saying no cell phones the parents should be in charge. You need to say, look, you need to prioritize the real world above the Virtual World, you need to be spending time with real people and turn off the devices, girls are going to bed with their cell phones on, texting at 2 00 in the morning. Boys are going to bed with devices, playing video games. Not getting good rest. No devices in the bedroom. Thats not just my opinion. Thats the American Academy of pediatrics. When you look at colleges, and you see that a lot more girls are graduating college than boys what is happening there . Boys are dropping out. In the United States today, for white, black and latino boys, working hard to get an a instead of a b is not cool. It used to be in this country, but it no longer is. So across the United States, whether youre affluent, low income, urban or rural, boys dont want to be seen as a geek. Is that what youre seeing, too . I do think there is a subtle cultural message that were sort of dumbing boys down. Men, dads in particular, are stupid and we sort of throw dads into orbit around the family. All dads on television are stupid, little kids laugh every joke. I think it trickles down to boys. I think boys feel that maleness is not appealing, they dont know what to be, they dont know whether to be assertive, kind, compassionate, whatever. I think theyre very isolated, theyre very confused and were dumbing them down. We need to get to and parents really need a lot of them dont have a father in the home too.
