Could it have been a horrible accident . Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez reports. Reporter he is the top cop in peachtree city, georgia. This morning state investigators are trying to find out what happened in his home near atlanta hours into the new year. A lot of things that we dont know yet about what took place that we need to know before we can make any decisions. Reporter chief mccollum called 911 just after 4 00 am thursday, saying he accidentally shot his wife in their bedroom with his departmentissued handgun similar to this one. Margaret mccollum was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The initial reports we got from the 911 call were that the chief had shot his wife accidentally, twice. As a result of our preliminary interview, we had found that he only shot her one time. Reporter police arent revealing what led to the shooting or how the gun could have accidentally fired. William mccolllum has not been charged with a crime but is on administrative leave. He has been the chief less than a year. Were very concerned for, obviously, his wife. Were concerned for the chief. Reporter neighbors are in disbelief. A lot of people are praying for her. Reporter and theyre hoping that what happened here was nothing more than a freak accident. Gabe gutierrez, nbc news, atlanta. Weve got really severe Winter Weather this morning through the southwest into the midwest. Weve got winter storm warnings, ice storm warnings and Winter Weather advisories from texas into oklahoma. This is the area were really concerned about over the next 24 hours from northern texas into oklahoma. Weve got ice storm warnings out. We could be looking at anywhere from an inch to half an inch of ice, which could be, for some parts of this area, catastrophic. The roads will be a mess. Power lines coming down. Well be watching this very closely. We have another area of Severe Weather developing along the southern gulf coast. For tomorrow, we look at this area down through the gulf coast. We may be seeing some Severe Weather, dangerous lightning, wind gusts, possibility of tornadoes from new orleans on into mobile and into central mississippi. Heavy rain anywhere from three to four inches of rain down through the gulf. During the day tomorrow into saturday evening it spreads into the northeast. Look at this. We are. One thing thats important for people to understand we do see a flu epidemic every year. Its just when in the season it occur. Its earlier this year. A few years ago, it was determined in october that we had an didepidemic. At least were ahead of that. One thing that makes this particularly concerning is the strain is the h3n2 strain which always historically is more virulent violent. So its severe in terms of how soon were seeing it the quality of the illness. Correct. Also adding to it weve got a vaccine that the doctors are saying is not a Perfect Match. Not a Perfect Match. For this strain. Correct. Roughly 50 of the h3n2 strain that is circulating right now is a variant of the strain that was made for the vaccine. That means if you got vaccinated and you get the h3n2 you have a 50 chance of being covered. I want to point out this is really important to reinforce. Even though it may not be a Perfect Match youre still going to get partial protection. And half of you who do get it are still probably going to be protected and having the vaccine should reduce the severity and duration of your flu illness. Which leads me to my last question. Is it too late . If you have not gotten your flu shot yet, is it worth getting it now . 100 . You develop immunity in two weeks. The flu season has not peaked yet. January and february is probably more severe than now. Its not too late. We encourage everybody to get the flu shot to reduce the flu burden within the community. One setting out to conquer the sport she dominated for years and one working on the new normal after a paralyzing injury. We start with downhill skier lindsey vonn, who has told natalie how hard shes worked to get back in the game. Lindsey vonn was expected to be a big star at the sochi olympics. Then came february 2013. The world ski championships in austria. During an extended weather delay, the snow on the course had changed. It was soft and slushy and i went off the jump in the middle of the course and i just landed in slop. Vonn over the top lindsay did about as much damage to a knee as one could do. She soon underwent reconstructive knee surgery. Day one. She decided to chronicle that surgery and painful rehabilitation process for an upcoming documentary to air on nbc. And by her side, offering support, was a new boyfriend, golfer tiger woods. How did the relationship develop . Were actually friends for a long time. Just one thing led to the other. The two had a lot in common. Both had trained relentlessly from an early age to reach the top of their sport. Dating tiger jolted lindsey into a whole new stratosphere of fame and scrutiny. How does that affect you, the glare of the media on the relationship . It was difficult in the beginning. It wasnt what people expected. I dont care what anyone else thinks. As long as were happy thats what matters. Have you gotten tiger on skis yet . Yeah. Hes really good. Really . Yeah. She made her comeback with the win at world cup in lake louise, alberta. Incredible. Finally, im back. She followed that up with another world cup win in france, putting her just one win away from tying the alltime record of 62 world cup wins. Yeah i love my job. Skiing with her. Lindsay plans to continue to push, to excel and, most importantly, to ski and live by her own rules. Injury wont stop you . No. Nothing will stop me. I swear. She is incredible. Amazing how quick you recover from a catastrophic injury, now world class once again. She always says dont count me out. We never will. Another incredible story, really inspiring athlete, former olympic swimmer, Amy Van Dyken rouen. She found olympic glory in the pool with six gold medals. Her life was dramatically changed when she was paralyzed in june. Matt has been canhas been covering her journey. Matt sat down with her and her former nfl kicker husband tom rouen. Reporter in the fight of her life. Van dyken, stretching for the wall. Shes got the gold she was one of the greatest olympic champions of all time. Am i allowed to sit here . Yeah. What are they doing to you . Stretching. Now paraplegic. Although i aim to not be one day, thats what i am. Amy left the hospital in august. She was thankful, optimistic, but worried about what daytoday living would be like back home in scottsdale, arizona. The way that my house is right now, i will not be able to take a shower. Even cooking, i cant see if the pots are boiling. I wont be able to reach the faucet to do the dishes. I started looking into the changes that needed to be made. I ended up getting in touch with george. George is george olyphant, host of the Home Improvement show, george to the rescue. Amy didnt know anything about george and his army of volunteers doing the renovations. When she finally returned home three months to the day after her accident, it was overwhelming. Thank you for everything. Because of all the changes, amy can now do many of the simple things she used to take for granted. Oh, my gosh now i can cook. I can do the dishes. For her transportation, tom had wanted to trade in her sporty camaro for a sensible van with a lift. I was like, no, no, no, the camaro is sexy and rock n roll and hello, sexy and rock n roll is totally what i am. Her tour ended in the garage where amy got the Biggest Surprise of all. Ready to go. Oh, my gosh are you kidding me . There was the camaro, retro fitted with hand controls, still hers to drive. You got your freedom back, babe. Thank you so much. Hot wheels. When i sat down with jolie easy to see telling the story of now her friend turn under to a true labor of love. Well congratulations on this movie. It is a real piece of filmmaking. About a very tough, yet inspiring subject. And the audiences really have seemed to embrace this. How did that feel . Oh, its its the most wonderful feeling. And not as a filmmaker but someone who loves and believes in movies. I loved them so much and was so funny. Really one of the funniest people youll ever meet. So full of life. So aware of the hardest aspects of life. And through that embraced every day with this fire and humor and his love. That was infectious. How much more responsible do you feel to a story when you know that theres a real person attached to this and that youve met and now are connected to . Its a huge responsibility. I lost so many sleepless nights and so many moments of selfdoubt because. Really . Oh, of course especially when somebody is your own actual hero. My second film. And its a huge film. And there was so many things from plane crashes and ive never directed anything like that. I often thought, this is too important and its too big and i dont know how i got here and i dont want to fail him. I dont want to fail him. He grew up here and every year would watch it on television. This was a big deal for him and he would have been excited. But theres something we found, which is if you work with the person you love and trust most in this world, its pretty great because you really try things with each other and you trust and as artists you get very bold because youre together. Is it true youre described it as a honeymoon . It technically was our honeymoon. We had this cove that we built and we had a hotel and on the other side was the house that the kids were doing school. Strange little relationship. It was like a honeymoon just onscreen, slightly dysfunctional one. You talk about supporting each other and it comes, its time for the premiere of unbroken and youre down with the chickenpox and brad end up taking three of the kids. I mean what was the i mean heres your big moment and chickenpox . It was so absurd. What was even stranger is i think during the day before i was trying to do interviewed and i kept thinking what is happening . But it was really fun that my kids took it very seriously ewhen i said you got to represent mom. You have to do this for me. My kids knew and loved louie. You have to get out there. They were excited about the mission. I love shiloh wearing the suit and tie. And she had louies shoe on. It is a gift that keeps giving. He will forever, be that inspiration to us all. It was, you could tell this was really a labor of love for her. And audiences really had had responded to it. The movie has done great. It has so much going for it. She was also the subject of the, in one of the sony released emails and didnt want to get into that so we moved on. But, she, obviously, has shown her job as a director and also talked about, she actually in a way likes directing more than acting. A challenge, i guess, for her. In this new year we decided to take over an entire issue of parade mag wreen and comeazine and came up with tips and tools to help get everybody started off in 2015. She, by the way, has an amazing new years resolution Success Story of her own and we think its really inspiring. Talk about that. So, we take over parade magazine, some of today show anchors. How did we do . You did great. Thank you for doing my job. You made it easy. Thats for sure. Well talk about some of the do and dont tips we provided. But you made a new years resolution a few years back. You are 54 and were 180 pounds and you lost 70 pounds. How did you do it . I had grown up an overweight kid and put on more pounds in college, like most people do and i really one day just decided after binging on half gallon of mint chocolate chip ice cream which i still cant eat that i had to make a change. And it turned into a fitness journey. I started running. And running was such a positive thing. It was such a challenging thing for me and i could see myself setting and reaching goals every time i went out there to run. So y wasnt really thinking i have to lose this weight it was more, i have to change my life. It really led to a whole, you know period of personal discovery for me. New years is a good time to do it. Not that long ago you decided to take up rowing and now you have a sport. Yeah i mean five years ago on new years day and i sent an email to the National Rowing club and i need to know how to row this year and i always want to do it and i started rowing and the biggest rugotta in the world. I competed at masters national. Its a great sport. Been such a gift to me. We are sufficiently inspired. Lets go through some of the tips that all of us gave. Mine says do in the new year Practice Gratitude and dont lose sight of whats important. Thats such a great resolution especially for working moms. I know youre a new mom trying to balance everything. A lot of people they try to maintain that resolution by keeping a gratitude journal so every night writing something down that youre grateful for or using social media to do that. That waw was along the line dont postpone adventure. The other thing matt said to us, take a breath. Stop, reconnect with the moment during the day and thats something you can do any time. Take a breath and reconnect with that moment that youre in. I love al. He said do feed your passion and dont sweat the small stuff. I love the passion thing because as adults we sort of lose some of those things that we loved as can kids like we used to play the guitar or the piano. Why not do that now . Thats a great stress reliever and takes your mind off of those todo lists that you have that kind of run our lives as adults. Natalie had a reminder, do take time for yourself and dont be so hard on yourself. Natalie talks a lot about the pressure that moms have to be the perfect mom. The thing about decluttering it can feel very overwhelming. Absolutely. What do you suggest to tackle it in the first place . Number one strategy is to take it room by room piece by piece. Starting with the book shelf, just take what the book shelf stay within the confines of the book shelf and start from there. I can already hear people saying my books, theyre part of my identity. Theyre who i m what if i read it again . If it has sentimental value, keep it. Otherwise its time to go. Somebody else could use it. Local school or library doesnt accept used books have a few charities in mind that you can donate to operation paperback donates to troops. Cookbook s cookbooks you may not use anymore, donate those as well. And then throw away any pamphlets, any loose, tattered books. Throw those away. They should not be donated. Make your book shelf visually appealing by color coding the remaining books, adding a few decorative objects as well. Do you have to get rid of lets say you dont really have to get rid of them but are you saying get rid of them and put other things in there . Exactly. It doesnt have to be filled up with just books completely. Leave yourself some space to keep growing. As we move into the closet bedroom area what do you do if its not your area that needs to be decluttered but your husbands or your kids . This will give you an opportunity to get new items to add to your wardrobe. Maybe take an hour this weekend and do it together. Make it a team project. Good luck with that. Okay. Again, take it piece by piece. Drawer by drawer as youre organizing take out items, have a keep pile things you know you definitely want a donation pile things in Great Condition and then if you have items that are in limbo, youre really not ready to give up quite yet, store them in a box and if you go back to look for them they deserve a spot in your wardrobe. Pergatory, put it in the attic, basement and if youre looking for it later you can bring them back out again . When you put them in your closet or dresser, organize them by use, casual formal business wear and then within those arrange it by color so its visually appealing. Do you have a rule how long its been since you have worn it that tells you when you should throw it out . If you havent worn something within two years, its time to say goodbye. Some people say six months. I think two years is a good timeframe. What about bags and shoes . Those can, again, kind of explode outside of their storage box. Designate one spot whether its a basket or one shelf that all your bags and shoes can live. Anything else is really something you need to take into account and figure out if you are actually going to wear. Take two weeks after youve organized. See if youre going to actually wear those items. Organize it. Take it for a test run. If you do wear them stuff it in there. Otherwise, time to donate. What about if you have a pretty gown . You dont want to give it away. Something sentimental. Look for an acid free storage box. Dont use your everyday wardrobe to store them. Store it on a high shelf in another closet. Keep this for your everyday items. Moving on to the kitchen. Collection of mug that is dont match. Thats always our problem. Take it closet by closet and take out the items that you dont you normally reach past on a daily basis for the things that you actually do use. Take out the things you dont use. Put them on a table. Those will be donated. When it comes to special Kitchen Appliances and things like that you know certain things you use on a monthly basis, thats fine to leave in the kitchen and store there. Juicers and blenders that you may not use, store them in the basement and attic if youre actually going to be interested in using them youll fetch them. Otherwise they go in donation. Tough love here stephanie. It really is. Start eastern if its just starting one room . Start small. Do it over the course of weekends or something . Absolutely. No timeframe. No pressure. I think he was just he was preparing to pass away when he was watching the film. But before i left the hospital room he told me a really inappropriate joke and i thought, what . And i left the room smiling. I came in here worried about him and i was going to leave crying and instead he wanted to put a smile on my face and he wanted me to know it was okay. And he took care of me. Thats a gift. And thats who louis was. Louis was greater than we could ever put on screen. 2014 you were one of two female directors who directed big studio movies. Do you hope that the door gets opened for more female talent behind the camera as opposed to in front of it . Yes. And im sure it will. I know many great, talented women who just need those breaks. Ive seen their work on a smaller scale. Theyre coming. I personally get more out of directing. I love being with the film for years and i love shepherding every aspect of it. And i love shining a camera on somebody else. And i love seeing other actors work. And i love being in the editing room and protecting their performances and i love being in the kind of more in the field with everybody. I like to be either with my boots on and doing work. If i can take it i can make it. Overall, are you pleased with whats on the screen with unbroken . Or do you watch it and say, i should have done this . I should have done that . Im sure ill always have a bit of that. Im pretty good at backing away. I dont see my work. I see everybodys work when i watch a scene and i think we all really came together and we did our best and its a beautiful memory. A lot of people were shocked it didnt get nominated for golden globe. Weve had lovely responses and accolades, but nothing beats the audience responding to it you know. Thats obviously when you make this kind of a film you know all the other stuff is wonderful. But it really Means Nothing if the audience doesnt connect to it. Because this film is made for them.
