Do you work harder thinking youll get 5 for an a . For some, yes. The motivation has to be appropriate for the child. I agree totally will with amy. What we really want to do, help kids feel good about themselves and learners and if we teach them how to learn and focus on the process rather than the grade, and really give them encouragement for paying attention, for doing things on their own, and teaching them how to do that, they will get this feeling of joy and love of learning, and accomplishment, and that is what contributes to people, particularly children, feeling good about themselves. Selfesteem. Feeling positive about that interesting, because our today producers talked about this. This actually blew up in a meeting because a lot of the producers got paid for grades and wound up working here at 30 rock and said, look. It worked for us. Thats terrible. Youre right. The first three hours, they got us. What does that mean . It does work for some. See . They all know its true. So to your point, these were probably people who were pretty motivated to begin with. Right . Definitely. Getting paid for grades is like a bonus. Sure, liked it, but did it really change their behavior . Think of the less man motivated kid. If cash is your primary vehicle, its never sustainable. Like putting bad dates on symptoms. Dont get to the real issue, discouraged . Have a learning difference . A power struggle . Unless we dig into that, no amount of payment will ever keep that kid motivated learn term. And often the parents are not willing to look any closer and say, what really might be going on . Maybe a kids embarrassed in school or bullying . To the point amy made if a child does have a learning difference, you can dangle as much money as you want. Theyre still not able to do it unless they learn the way theyre supposed to learn, and then they are motivated, because theyve had success. There are many ways to incite kids and give wonderful incentives meaningful for them. I dont know a parent who doesnt say i wish i had more time with my kid. Make that part of the incentive.
