That does with those 8 mac Mini's do you feed it one stream it automatically logs into and sends your stream to a variety of services but those can be very very expensive there elemental. John correct tell me the name of the server based. Nano there is one and I kid the names excuse cave to me but there's a server based way to do this. I can't remember then now the chat rooms also saying re streamed out I know which sounds like you'd be a little bit closer to your needs and certainly less expensive but he says you can stream to 30 plus platforms simultaneously so that sounds kind of interesting restrain him. I'm going to guess. That behind the scenes they're using this server which I for the life of me can't remember the name of but there is a system that does this you can run it on a regular server and all all to do the restraining really that issue with this is that each stream requires its own encoding and it's a lot of processor power that's why the elemental cost $25000.00 of it is just a fancy p.c. Mobile doesn't I think Verizon doesn't I don't I guess. Who's your carrier. Is a good it reasonable reason why is because I don't trust. The hotel's nests in oh so then a v.p.n. Is a very good solution Ok now you don't have to use your phone anymore you can use the hotel's network but you're protecting yourself in the hotels network using a virtual private network so there are many ways to do this I carry with me it's actually a mighty chain a little u.s.b. Dongle It's called a tiny hardware firewall it plugs into either the u.s.b. Port of my computer or I could have plug it into wall charger u.s.b. Charger or I could plug it into a battery that just needs a little bit of power powers up I log into it from my computer and then I use it to join the hotel's network once on it now is a without doing anything more is now a fire wall which is many cases you know enough protection it acts as if you're using a router on the hotels that were good means anybody else the network can't see you they can only see your hardware firewall but should you want to get another step of privacy by encrypting all the traffic using a v.p.n. You can turn that on just understand that when you use a v.p.n. There's overhead it slows you down a little bit but it's absolutely the best way to be secure and so you can then use a hotel or a coffee shop why fi with impunity you don't have to worry it's just as secure as anything else is just the security of being at home. And that this little tiny hardware firewall goes one step farther you can turn on so it's a firewall you can turn on v.p.n. But again Additionally turn on something called Tor which non of mice is you so it's a really kind of sophisticated little device the the do hickey itself is about 40 bucks you can get a deal on it if you buy a year's worth of v.p.n. Service from that company tiny hardware firewall dot com But there are lots of companies tunnel bear that do this tunnel there's a good software only v.p.n. So you would log on Tunnel bear running their software on your laptop or your phone and still use the hotel's internet but the hotel doesn't see anything you're doing it's inside an encrypted tunnel. So it does all you down it's got some overhead but it is absolutely the recommended way to use a public why should I that were very good idea highly recommended thank you very much my pleasure yeah and yeah if tethering would work because instead of using the hotel you're using your cell phone carrier but you got your cell phone carrier has to support it. I use I use the hot spotting all the time on my Actually that's a very handy feature that's another way to get Internet access in fact I suspect this is why you're seeing fewer laptops with l.t.e. They're 70 who was 72 and 77 Your parents are young and they are they are very active and they are are they love to travel so Tuscany in Fall is beautiful it is just so yeah I think I love it there are the photographers they like to take pictures no they're not no they're not at least not as well to the extent that that I am I have I got my photography from I don't even know I'm self-taught I just dug into this very early and I study never stop digging so that's why i'm here i'm so you know my mom and dad took pictures in oh in those days with film and so forth you know it was a lot more expensive to get serious about photography but my dad always you slide film we have thousands of slides from my childhood and my mom took some beautiful very artistic photos I wish she'd done more so maybe I inherited a little bit I certainly hope I am not where I am on the painter she's an artist Yes So she's a painters you know they soak screen or she knits strange things and felt them that's her latest thing is mom's watching so that sounds cool and she does a little saying she's doing Santa Claus's now for a moment my mom does photography but she does it for her cookbook website because she has a German website about gluten free food maybe and with gluten Oh you can oh yes you can and she's been doing this for 20 years so it can she has all with 1000 recipes on there what's the website Well it's minus cost on book jihads German so it won't really help. What I wanted to talk about today is nothing to do with that I shall want to take website by the way you think I did you think I care you go but I have and will put a link in the show notes for those of you who speak German There's your mom on all issues we even do a podcast gluten Creech wrote in German again so that's. All right I'm sorry I distracted you. It's a family project that's really people I never knew that I've known you for years and never knew this so what is your topic of the day today well the thing I recently came across is something from the cinema from the movies and it again goes back to a question that I received from a listener of my podcast it's from the top floor and he saw a scene in the movie the hateful 8 by Quentin Tarantino Yes and that was shown in 70 millimeter film it was shot on old bones Samaras Yanis vision you know I'll try Pena vision ultra pen of vision with lenses from the 1960 s. Mess what I found out and it looks now gorgeous like it does yeah now now there's a couple of scenes in there where you see some thing really close and something really far in the same scene but they're both in focus How does and if you know anything about this kind of a camera and about these kind of lenses and about the format they're shooting on and it's very hard to pull off normally you have to choose where the focus is close as they are but it's typically never very close and very far at the same time right so I was I was started to dig into this and and and see what they've done and I have one of my my my kind of speciality is to shoot with the so-called tilt shift lens which can do these kind of things so I thought they might have done this with the tilt shift lens but then I looked into these old lenses from the 1960 s. Probably not and then you can of course. Do something like that it's digital post production where you comp a composite several shots and Jeff a close and a far one and you make them into one shot but hey this is Quentin Tarantino you wouldn't do that no trick probably has done this. But what I found is that and I went down a deep rabbit hole here the solution is called a split diopter Now you can convert a lens a regular lens to a closeup lens by putting a diopter on it by putting a lens on the front it's just a regular screw on lens it's a magnifying glass pretty much and then what they do is they just put that in half so it is a half of a lens without anything and half of a regular lens is just lens cut through in the middle and you will see that if that effect if you know about it and you look closer you will see this in. All sorts who in Citizen Kane in Cary in blowout in Jaws in Close Encounters in. The 1st saying why carpenter and Jim Jarmusch movies. Mission Impossible it's kind of an older. It is a technique that has been around for a long time especially because they couldn't do the composite in back then so they had to use that now there is one problems what problems zone in that's a plate diopter and that is that usually it has its cut in the middle you will have an out of focus there in the middle you have a blurry line that goes in the middle right it's almost like 2 lenses in one really and they often have to highlight this in other use using the set like there's a line through the middle of a shot and so you can hide it there or just ignore it and it little just people will just not really not really notice they want to still camera we would just have a small aperture to keep everything in focus you can't do that with these movie cameras Well the problem with movie cameras is they have to shoot their 24 frames per 2nd so you the 24th of a 2nd if you don't have a lot of lights you have to work with a pretty open aperture and this way you can get some split focus the examples you are you're looking at there are not always but it is but here's one movie that I I mean it's a cipher I class make it's from 171 is called The Andromeda Strain Michael crazed on a exactly based on a book by Michael Crighton that is Ben must be the most extensive use of a splitter updraft ever seen there's a youtube video someone. Chose their favorite 7071 different shots with. The movie has over $200.00 scenes filmed with a split diopters so that wow. Oh that's a good question I don't know that but it is one of the most most expensive uses of that and it conveys an interesting sort of feeling after watched this movie several times without noticing but just subconsciously noticing that something was a bit off and that is what that movie wants to convey anyway it's about a it's about a disease from space that takes over the world and. That that's put there does that it gives you that thing that you don't usually get because you don't see these kind of shots normally so split diopter definitely something really cool to look into it i mean i stan it it's like you have 2 different focal lengths on one lens by putting extra lens in front of it half of it and so wow that's a low tech solution isn't it's amazing was amazing is that somebody noticed it and realized well you couldn't really do that with an exe with that with a camera you have to do something special and that's how they did it's kind of amazing I love that yes and you can of course use that in photography as well if you have a diopter cut it in half and.
