The last time 25 year old Russell Roberts had been in judge elliott sattlers courtroom, the charge was possession of narcotics for sale. Instead of serving time, he was sent to drug court, a strict program of monitoring and testing. In a month he was using drugs again and had dropped out of the program. Today the charge was assaualt with a deadly weapon. Roberts had plead guilty to an incident last august which began trying to walk out on a bar tab and quickly ended with reports of a Man Threatening others with a gun in downtown reno. Officer Christopher Johnson responded, ordering roberts to halt. Johnson all i wanted to do was talk. Someone had told me that you had pointed a gun at somebody. Instead roberts got in his car, aiming it at the officer striking him, then running over his knee. Fired at roberts. He was hit twice,but sped off. Roberts insisted he didnt know johnson was a police officer. Sattler you want me to believe that person whos pointing a flashlight at you with one hand and pointing a weapon at you with the other hand and giving you verbal commands and identifying himself as Law Enforcement and im sure in a full Reno Police Deparment uniform, you just didnt know that he was a cop . Though his parents asked the judge for a lighter sentence after which they would pay for an intensive rehabilitation program, the judge noted roberts had had that chance before. Sattler you endangered not only yourself and officer johnson, but a whole broad section of this community who i believe officer johnson says were just out trying to have a good time, trying to enjoy themselves. Sir, at some point the sentence on the battery charge10 years with possible parole in four, but first roberts will have to complete that original four year sentence on the drug charge. Congressman joe heck thinks the current requirements scare some students away. Rep joe heck im still paying off my student loans. I know how difficult it is to navigate this process, and we dont want that to be a hiccup for some talented High School Graduate thats looking to go onto college. Heck says the fact that the current fafsa is ten pages long with 100 questions makes it through the form. He says this bill will cut through a lot of unnecessary red tape it includes the sharing of some irs information that will automatically fill in parts of the application for the student. Another component is the Tax Information required right now students need the current years tax report which can significantly delay the process. This bill allows for students to use the previous years information. Rep joe heck theyre ready for college and they want to go on to college. Congressmen Duncan Hunter of california and ryan zinke of montana say the legislation is aimed at provoking a fuller discussion of the pentagons decision to open combat jobs to women.
