From a.b.c. News this is perspective. A closer look at the week's top stories and the stories you may have missed I'm Sherri Preston. Coming up she got in a car she thought was her birth but it wasn't the tragic death of a college student in South Carolina we do it to do it. Again to continue the history in Chicago as the city elects a new mayor we will celebrate our differences we only place our uniqueness and we will make certain that you have every opportunity to succeed and President Obama's longest serving adviser gives advice for some of the 2020 candidates they are stronger when we recognize that being inclusive and finding what we have in common you know optimism about our future that's a vision for our country that I see. All ahead on perspective. After declaring full exoneration reports have surfaced. This week that the limited information Attorney General William Barr shared about the Russia investigation has frustrated some on Special Counsel Robert Muller's team that comes as the president continues to call for Republican health care plan and threatens to close the southern border for more on those stories and everything else happening in d.c. Let's go to a.b.c. News Political Director reclined a lot of debate this week Rick about this summary report was it an actual summary was it just you know wait some conclusions where do we stand with the Moeller report and with Attorney General Bill Barr we don't have an actual report yet we have a summary of a report and now we have conflicting information about who's happy about what is or isn't included in it and it actually has become more of a question not less and that in the week and a half or so since Moeller Muller produced his findings and Barr summarized those findings we are expecting to see something in the next week or so according to the attorney general but even that is going to be shrouded in questions because there's going to be portions of it that are blacked out that are redacted for privacy reasons or other considerations so there's a lot of questions still out there and I think the a knish will take of this of being a huge political benefit a boon to the president I think we've tempered that a little bit just because there's still a lot we don't know we got us of the political fight with the legal experts that you've been talking to how much do we the American people and the taxpayers have a right to see some stuff in there this is a very sensitive material in that report Well we paid for the report and of course there's intense public interest in the 22 month investigation but there is information that would include grand jury testimony that might involve people that have not been charged or indicted in any crime could kind of peripheral players potentially you could also have information in there given the Russian hacking and in the interference that was the initial focus of the investigation that gets at what the intelligence community call sources and methods you don't want the Russians to find out how we learned certain things so there's all those things plus there's the possibility of the president trying to exert executive privilege or the attorney general. Exerting that on his behalf so there are a lot of categories of things that could be kept secret and I think the fight that Congress has initiated now in subpoenaing the report potentially bringing it to them in an redacted form is going to take a while the play out of course in the president saying I want the whole thing released and then maybe not maybe not and he said he was going to close the southern border and the southern border is still open is that just another thing saying I'm going to do this and that it doesn't happen or did it actually did Mexico actually step up and do something there's no evidence that Mexico seriously changed its behavior its enforcement along the border this seems to be the president either as a negotiating strategy or just the musings that he sometimes engages in there's been fierce blowback even from many Republicans and business groups about what the impact of a closed border would be it's really not practical and even the senator from Texas Ted Cruz and John Korn of the monk saying this would be. An economic disaster and urging the White House not to do it so it's unclear whether he's serious about this he sometimes says things that he does not follow through on I don't think that's a surprise to any of us at this point Cheri how big will and how much how successful will the fight to be to get the president's tax returns I mean they're going back to a law from the 1920 s. Trying to say that they have the right to see these tax returns do you think anything there you know that law it's almost 100 years old it's very rarely been exerted but it does give the congressional committees the right to see anyone's tax returns the catches it has to be for a legitimate legislative purpose now Democrats will say we're going to make sure the tax code is fair we want to make sure the audit process around presidents is fair we want to make sure that there's accountability for public officials all of which are legitimate legislative interests the White House is already saying it is a fishing expedition ultimately it's going to fall to the treasury secretary of course see evolution appointed by and confirmed to the Senate but appointed by President Trump and I think ultimately the course of this is bound for determination inside the court system and it will test this law that's been written very rarely used looking ahead to next week what do we have going on all eyes on Joe Biden in the coming week you know he is. Been buffeted by this criticism of some inappropriate contact that some women have alleged toward him this is the phase that he's in right now to be thankfully launching a presidential campaign he's got a speech scheduled for next week and it is going to be a very big deal whatever he does that is probably the biggest the biggest dominoes fall in the 2020 race A.B.C.'s reclined thank you so much. Senior adviser to President Barack Obama for most of the 8 years that he was in office not long after leaving office she became the subject of a racist tweet from Roseanne Barr now she's out. I talked about that memoir she opened up about her views on the current political climate. And advice for Democratic candidates running for president let's talk a little bit 1st of all about what happened in Chicago I mean 1st African-American woman I know that you were supporting Lightfoot's opponent. Who's a former teacher and she's very big in the Democratic Party there but what do you think of Laurie Lightfoot I think she's to reflect she is a story a candidate I know she's committed to Chicago she loves our city I did support Toni Preckwinkle I've known Tony for 30 years she was my alderman back when she was an alderman and I've been very impressed with the work she's done at the county board and to the good news is we have the chairman of the Cook County board and we have the mayor of the city of Chicago who I know we're going to work together and move the city forward ever give any thought to running for mayor of Chicago I have given in years gone by and now I'm really interested in helping other people run for office and delighted to see not just in Chicago but around the country so many women who are jumping in and being willing to put themselves in the arena and running for office I think that's good for our city and for the country and let's talk about that I mean so many women running for president by 5 when they were out of you know we're moving up there a little bit what do you think of that huge field of Democrats I think I call it an embarrassment of riches and I'm delighted to see so many committed folks who want to serve our country and who are willing to. Put themselves on the line and take their case directly to the American people so I'm very enthusiastic about the field how about Joe Biden I mean the things that have come out over the past couple of weeks I'd like your thoughts on that because it's really I mean that's Joe Biden well and I think he got it right when he said it's a new day and it's time for men to listen and that he intends to listen and I think modeling that kind of behavior is really important my book is called finding my voice and so I'm encouraged to see women beginning with the me too movement where some very brave women were willing to step forward and talk about what had happened to them which was quite traumatic and obviously there's a whole spectrum but it's important that women know that their voices are going to be heard and I thought that Vice President Biden acknowledged that and I was impressed that he did I have a theory that the me too movement in the Times of movement wouldn't have happened. Maybe not at all but certainly not as quickly without the election of Donald Trump and by that I say that things were percolating and maybe with the election of Hillary Clinton it was well we're Ok will be fine and a lot of women after the election of Donald Trump said no no no no it's my own personal theory I you know but that's I think that it sort of sort of bubbled over the top and they said we're speaking up now we're as the title of your book is finding my voice and finding my voice I'm saying something about it well the day after the inauguration we saw record crowds of women come out for the women's March and I think that the activism among women around the country has been tremendous over the last couple of years women running for Congress record number of women who were elected to Congress as well and so I think that activism is great I'm not sure exactly what triggered it but if the election of Donald Trump did that I think that's terrific because I I love to see the people who represent our country representing the great diversity of our country when you look at the Trump presidency what are your thoughts. Well it's profoundly disappointing to me obviously I was a supporter of Hillary Clinton and I thought that she would continue to move our country forward in a positive direction I thought that her message was similar to rock Obama's message which is that we are stronger when we recognize that being inclusive and finding what we have in common and not polarizing ourselves and speaking in a way that our young people will look up to us and feel optimism about our bright future in that's the vision for our country that I support and actually not the one that I've seen over the last couple years and looking forward if you were to guess 2 years from now where we would be I know that that's difficult and we don't we're not in the guessing game but you know going forward the Democrats' message it has to be more than we're not Donald Trump because there's a lot of people across the country including many in Illinois downstate Illinois who who like Donald Trump they like his one style they you know way I don't like who we you know you I don't like some of the things he does but I love what he's done for the economy bill in the blanks Well this is what I've said to several of the candidates who are running for president is that I think. They are at their strongest when they're talking about what they stand for what their track record is what their vision for America is what they're going to do to help working families around our country not just get by but right and if they have that optimistic clear message about their values and their vision and their track record I think that resonates with the American people coming out of the store it may all raise in Chicago. Help difficult was it for you as you know a woman to find your voice in the Obama administration I know that you're the one who hired Michelle Robinson was her main name and she introduce you to Barack Obama and you said I don't think you should run for president no no actually I My mistake was saying he should run for the u.s. Senate and I was wrong I stand corrected when he thought of running for president I was all and I thought that he was just what our nation needed I thought I was confident that he could do well and after Iowa I knew he could win it what do you say to young people I have a son who's entering college in just a few months in graduation Thank you I have to repeat Gerri that you're only one of my only boy oh boy I know it's and kids are worried these you know the generations e kids and the millennial they're looking forward and they're looking at our generation going and you guys really left us with a big ole pile of fun then you know but they're up to it I have to say look the young folks from Parkland many of whom I've gotten to know of over the last year and their willingness not just to advocate in Florida for reducing gun violence but to get on a bus and spend their summer traveling our country red and blue states alike making a case for why we should be able to send our children to school and know that they're safe is heartening to me and I love their activism and I think it's contagious and I'm heartened to see their willingness to take a real. Extraordinary tragedy and try to make sure that the rest of our children stay say what do you think about the Roseanne Barr thing as I said at the time I put myself in the arena and so I'm fine and I have enormous amount of support but I think that it's symptomatic of a bigger problem and I think we've got to figure out a way to communicate with each other without making it personal without turning into a name calling We're all adults here and we can have reasonable policy differences but let's sit down and talk them through Let's not talk at each other. And I think one of the challenges that we have with social media is that we have the ability to hide behind the veil of anonymity and not have to look into the eyes of the person to whom you're speaking and we were talking earlier about really agree with her and I mean my younger cousins have been telling me recently about posting people and we have never did that when we were growing up we actually had a conversation and I think developing those interpersonal skills is important not just in politics and service and in government but in our personal lives as well so I think we have to figure out how we can disagree without being disagreeable I would like to go to a part in your book and this is the end you said when you were entering Michigan Law School you said you said you wanted to go a scholarship these goals in the next 10 years your plan was number one graduate from Stanford I guess this was before you went to college prep number to graduate from Michigan number 3 discover my career passion number 4 fall in love and marry number 5 have a baby and number 6 be fulfilled satisfied and happy wife and a working mom All right 31 that was my goal all by 31 it didn't work out so well but she pretty much most of those I know but but that's kind of my putting my goal this is my point is that I did she have those goals but all within a very narrow comfort zone in a straight line and it wasn't until some of those goals started falling apart and I realized I was miserable but I got outside of that comfort zone and I developed kind of the. An appreciation of the confidence for the adventure of the zigzag and if I had stuck to those goals I wouldn't be happy at 30 I wasn't happy at $31.00 and I had a terrible marriage and I didn't enjoy practicing law to big law firm and I had to do a real gut check and initially I hadn't trusted the most important voice which is the quiet one inside of us and I was doing what everybody else thought I should do and it wasn't what I wanted and so I take I say to people all the time yeah you can come up with a 10 year plan but remember that it's Ok And in fact I encourage you to abandon it if it doesn't work out and that doesn't make you a failure it just means it's time to zig and zag and that. Sag that. Swirl if you will that's where the magic happens Valerie Jarrett thanks so much the book is called finding my voice my journey to the West Wing and the path forward Thank you so much my pleasure Sherri thanks for having me. History was indeed made in Chicago this week in a runoff race Democrats Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle faced off both were trying to become the 1st African-American woman to serve as Chicago's mayor a winner we will celebrate our differences we will increase our uniqueness and we will make certain that all have every opportunity to succeed A.B.C.'s Ryan Burrow has more on board like books historic victory Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel shocked the Windy City in September when he announced as much as I love this job and will always love the city and its residents I decided not to seek reelection for the 1st time since 2011 and open may or election in Chicago in the candidates started lining up including former Obama chief of staff and brother and son of legendary Chicago Bears Bill Daley most of my career has been that like my brother father who are current politicians mine has been in the private sector I think some of those experiences talents also as chief of staff as commerce sector I can bring the bear in the mayor's office a bar and a community activist who got the backing of Chicago musicians Kanye West and Chance the Rapper if you're afraid of change you're probably not going to. But if you want to see with this city could be. 14 candidates in total and in the chaos a former u.s. Prosecutor quietly began building her case it was Mayor Rahm Emanuel who appointed Laurie Lightfoot head of the Chicago Police Board 2015 in the wake of the police officer shooting of the Kwan McDonald the board would recommend a handful of potential candidates in a nationwide search for a new police superintendent but the mayor went a different direction and selected superintendent Eddie Johnson from in-house The mayor also appointed Lightfoot to lead the police accountability task force an independent agency tasked with investigating elegant. Police brutality as well as recommending police reform the city would go on to enter into a consent decree that was rejected by the Trump administration and later accepted by the Illinois attorney general Lightfoot resigned her role in May of 2018 months later announced she would campaign against her former boss Emanuel even before he announced he would not seek reelection meaning to be near who is not afraid to take only the unions and do the right thing for its message on crime often drowned out by the fired Chicago police superintendent turned candidate Gary McCarthy He says you know the shoes are so. Washed over by Kennedy it really will set a candidate who literally handed out money to people at churches 300000 maybe a little more to people on the street and I never have asked in a manner to vote for me and her experience overshadowed by the long time leadership She didn't get the 50 percent needed for an outright win and it forced the head to head race with finished in 2nd place. To even acknowledge that you got the money. And you said it was. The work has been my. Colleague that is our little son is for real action can not solicit money in the face off April 1st $1.00 the runoff election by a nearly $3.00 to $1.00 margin grabbing more than 70 percent of the vote and becoming Chicago's 1st African-American female mayor the 1st openly gay mayor and I think. Coming up to you when we drive it tells us about her recovery from cancer the 1st a man arrested this week for the murder of University of South Carolina student Samantha Josephson she got into a car she thought was her alleged killer locked the car doors from the inside for more here's A.B.C.'s picture. By herself she had absolutely no chance. For college senior Samantha Josephson she truly was. Her last moments caught on surveillance footage getting into what appears to be her but it's a stranger. Rolling in murder the 21 year old before distorting her body in a remote wooded area our lives will forever be better for having known her. Family and friends remembering the University of South Carolina student for positivity and bright future Samantha was going to go to law school now those dreams gone and with ride sharing ups more popular than ever with an estimated 75000000 riders on alone questions swirling about how passengers can stay safe it was a typical Thursday night here in 5 Points an area really popular with college students near the University of South Carolina campus Samantha Jones says that in her friends they were out here at this bar called the bird dog after she got separated from the group she decided to go home police say she ordered after 2 am waiting alone outside in the surveillance footage up like Chevy Impala pulled up in Josephson got in we believe the. She simply mistakenly got into this particular car thinking it was a new car ride it was known the next day worried friends told the police they had not heard from her the next morning and they became worried about 130 they reached out to the police department to report her missing but it would be too late body had been found by a couple people hunting in a field in what was described by the sheriff to us as a. Wooded area in a very rural part of the county according to the arrest warrant Josephson suffered multiple wounds to wear body including her head neck face upper body leg and foot the coroner releasing her cause of death as due to multiple sharp force injuries police tracked down the vehicle for minute surveillance video that arrested 24 year old Nathaniel Willett at a traffic stop around 3 am police say they found liquid bleach cleaning wipes and window cleaner Palla that was driven by the suspect had a Lords a large amount of liquid that we believed to be blood and once they did a presumptive test it in fact was confirmed to be blood Rowling is no charge with kidnapping and murder police describing how he was able to carry out his alleged crime further investigation on the suspect vehicle determine the child that a child safety seat was in the back and then the child safety locks were activated on the door that. They do anything significant kids. Need to continue. On campus some students saying they'll continue to be vigilant Are you take any action or cautions Oh yeah I'm definitely going to be checking like who's my over driver checking license plates all that stuff I'm told my friends and that's what I'm going to check because things like numbers and not I'm not gonna know when police have not said if the killing was targeted but are asking the public to report any encounters with fake Roger drivers we also would ask anybody that has been in 5 points. You know in recent times that has had anybody and try to entice them over to a car like in a Russian or capacity we would ask them to give us a call who are calling this an unspeakable crime saying their hearts are with Samantha Joseph since family and loved ones writing that we've been working with local law enforcement and college campuses across the country to educate the public about how do you avoid fake wager drivers they also caution users to use the up to double check 2 important details before starting a trip the driver and the car guys have to travel together for Joseph since father and the rest of her family the warnings come too late but they're now focused on making sure this doesn't happen to another family so what I want to do is educate everybody and not that I'm the smartest person here but I've gone through this and I don't want anybody out there ever go through this again. Locations Tami Bennett on Como news. It's the 1st weekend of April and it will be seasonably chilly and soggy at times we've got a pair of disturbances coming through one for each weekend day each one is going to feature some steady rain some gusty winds this 1st storm on Saturday will see the winds anywhere between 20 and 4045 mph around the waterfront of Puget Sound could see if you stray gusts upwards of 50 to 55 in the Orcas Island vicinity or back to the ocean beaches in the Global Weather Center I'm meteorologist Shannon O'Donnell . F.m. $0.97 this is perspective from a.b.c. News I'm Sherri Preston Award winning director and producer and a mood Leben is out with a new documentary premiering on p.b.s. April 8th It's called the providers and it follows 3 health care professionals in northern New Mexico El Centro a group of safety net clinics that offer care to all of those who walk through its doors it is certainly a challenge and I stopped by a.b.c. And I talked about the film what got you interested in the whole idea of there being and lack of medical facilities you know and doctors in rural communities so Laura my co-director and I were both the children of doctors ourselves so we have a longstanding interest in health and health care issues and we were reading in 2014 about communities that after the. Passage of the Affordable Care Act They were still struggling to meet the needs of the communities because there weren't enough doctors and so we set out on a 6 month journey of talking to people all around the country involved in rural medicine and primary care and trying to find out what is today's country doctors so to speak look like in rural America that's facing so many challenges I know that a lot of people talk about food deserts in parts of the country where they can't get healthy groceries they've been talking about now news deserts where you can't get local news it sounds like you've come up with the same thing when it comes to health care and doctors you know sort of a medical desert for people who are in areas how far do some people have to drive to find a facility that will help treat with the Have Yes So we definitely have discovered medical deserts we see patients in our clinics that are in the film that have to travel and our to go to just their primary care practitioner and especially when you're looking at communities that are strained financially that can be a real challenge not just in terms of the cost of the gas to get to the doctor but also that tie taking time from work and juggling so many different things tell us a little bit about the communities and then were there any that really stood out to you that this is you know a real problem in this particular area of the country so our film the providers is set in northern New Mexico in the towns of Las Vegas New Mexico the other Last Vegas and Espanol and New Mexico and the clinic there we set the film at El Centro family health. They have a number of sites and they cover over 22000 square miles of northern New Mexico which is about the size of West Virginia and so there are clinics are really serving a need in the community for health care and people otherwise wouldn't be able to access care and El Centro family health the clinic where the film is set is a federally qualified health center and it really serves as the safety net in these small town communities in northern New Mexico how big a deal is the opioid crisis in these places the opioid crisis is really damaging communities and what we've found particularly in northern New Mexico which actually before the current opioid crisis has a long history of heroin use dating back to the Vietnam War that what we see a lot is intergenerational use and really a cycle of addiction in trauma and poverty and the stories in the film show that health care can really be a point of intervention in that cycle the doctor in that you profiled in the documentary his father died of an opioid overdose while you were filming Yes So 1st of all he's actually not an m.d. He's a physician assistant and so we're seeing in rural America advanced practitioners so nurse practitioners and physician assistants really becoming the work force and yes over the course of us making the film his father. Or die of an overdose which was absolutely devastating in the film you also see his sister struggling with addiction and repealing the Affordable Care Act is that a big deal to people in these areas are they on that kind of health care or do they have their own insurance and New Mexico did expand Medicaid and that has really dramatically impacted how many people can access care in the community and to the clinic that our film is set at the vast majority of the people at the clinic are on Medicaid or Medicare and without that expanded access to Medicaid they would really be in trouble really what we see often in rural communities is practitioners come for a few years and then leave and that lack of continuity of care is really damaging because patients then don't trust the medical system really those long term relationships are absolutely critical to patients' health doesn't sound like people are moving into you know everybody's rural communities in a drastic pace but any solutions Absolutely so the research shows that the best way to get more health care providers into rural communities is to grow your own and so we see in the film that Propes has started a program where he mentors local high school students to pursue health care careers and therefore you really a revitalizing the community from within the movie premieres of the providers that appear premieres Monday April 8th on p.b.s. And an a move Levin thank you very much thank you so. Much coming up Julia Louis Dreyfus on recovering from cancer. There are a few spots to avoid. This morning East marginal way in Seattle remains closed after an incident yesterday that downed over a dozen power poles and those poles have not yet been restored some marginal block between Norfolk and 16th in both directions to further notice and we have 2 crashes one in Canada and South 107 year 277 state patrol and 8 on the scene of that another wrapping up as we speak near Grand Mt southbound 5 just south of the scatter Creek rest area I'm Tammy Bennett on Komo News. And we are heading into the weekend with a some more of this we had gusty weather Saturday a new storm coming in we'll have a window by 3 in place for most of the day southerly winds gusting 20 to 55 mph those stronger gusts probably just a few beaches to the coast to the northwest interior near the San Juans But regardless of the easy day and one on one with another is so great for most of us refugees on Sunday more of the same steady rain coming on in so a pair of weekend days in the coming weather center I'm meteorologist shit O'Donnell. 10977 Welcome back to perspective I'm sure you are still she became a household name after successful roles in the show Seinfeld and Veep Now Julia Louis Dreyfus is looking ahead she stopped by A.B.C.'s Good Morning America to talk with Robin Roberts about the final season of Veep and her battle with breast cancer doing what I am I think. I just do it easy to go public and you know if you don't have a choice but still yes but what was it for you you post it so much when you really helped a lot of people well that was the that was the sort of the good thing that came out of this experience because frankly I would never have sort of made this a public journey but I kind of had to given the circumstances because our show had to shut down and hundreds of people work on our show and so on and so forth shut down per pair of time but. But there was a. Huge benefit to that as you say I got a lot of I don't know I think I reach a lot of people I was able to raise a lot of money for for women who have had mastectomies who need reconstruction but insurance doesn't cover that and I was really happy to be able to to do that and I don't know it was just the outpouring of support was quite overwhelming and very very bullying to me frankly personally. You know you know what I should talk about it yeah I would help others during the war in return all the goodwill going people from Wall walks of life yeah you up yeah and also I mean it sounds kind of corny but there's something about after you've walked through something is like this which is such a crisis to be able to sort of look help someone who's then going through it is very sort of comforting to yourself in a weird way help it I mean it really is. Something that I'm happy to do it gives me a lot of energy and a good feeling because your digital post was so good it really helped with the Scotian you said in part the good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive caring family friends fantastic insurance when you know the bad news is not all women are so lucky so it's been great that you've been able to have that discussion Yes Well I think universal health care is a must and I and. You. Know you might be enduring this kind of huge crisis and it's terrifying to get a diagnosis like this and if you don't have insurance or means what do you do and that should be a fundamental right you know drink you. Thank you really help your sons your husband you posted. Put out there you know laughter is the best medicine in the it is yes it certainly doesn't help put to you Well I was every time somebody you know might my children were incredible they were even people that I work with were posting after my boys sort of did this song and which made me of course cry and feel good all the same time then people work from deep started doing exactly the same thing and I was so it was very it helped me get through chemotherapy and in a big way after I know because you go dude I mean that's a serious thing but yeah out of foreign yeah whiteness and post it to your family and oh my gosh your cast mates Yes Terrible thank you very very very you. Know the last season really. Well I was a creative decision I have to say it was creative we really felt like Ok we've got one more season of stories to tell and if we stretch this out longer I feel like the work will suffer and so but I'm very excited about this season I have to tell you I mean we're. C going to take your. Work already always leave people wanting more yeah for sure and that's what you're going to do we are all right for thank you very much. From a.b.c.
