County election officials issued a statement saying a printing error was to blame but details of how that error happened haven't yet been determined and over the last few days there were some more developments k.p.c. Sees senior politics reporter Mary Plummer has been following the story and she's in studio for more in morning Mary good morning so quite a few things develop with the story over the past few days but 1st can you catch us up with the independent review sure said the l.a. County Board of Supervisors and l.a. County registrar now calling for an independent 3rd party review due to the severity of the problems l.a. County's top election official that is Dean Logan he's asked for help from the l.a. County Chief Information Officer. And the auditor controller that primary task will be investigating what caused the massive printing error there's a lot of questions about that and I'm expecting more details this week on who exactly will conduct the outside review near you also found that at least 5 other counties had active voters missing from poll rosters on Election Day What happened in those situations yes I've been reporting this story out with our Orange County Reporter Joel Replogle we can from that election officials at 5 additional counties around the state know of active registered voters who are left off the rolls in error those counties include Ventura in you know kings Sonoma and counties the scale appears to be much smaller than what I heard and Los Angeles County some of the counties know of just a very small handful of voters left off the rolls but even small numbers left off the rolls is a serious issue and the fact that we're seeing problems across multiple counties certainly raises concern and he spoke to Cammy flick She's the county clerk recorder for in your county which is east of Sequoia National Park What is her assertion for why these names are missing what's interesting is the county and its election management software vendor believe they traced the problem to an update and the d.m.v. Automated voter registration information you may remember this program launched After several delays back in April so remind us what is this d.m.v. Program and why does it suspect it's the reason behind the glitch Well Cammie she says it was just at that time that they suspect the error occurred leading to the missing names and we've heard from at least one other election official in a different county who suspects their problem comes from the same cause just to back up a bit the d.m.v. Program is a major change to how California registers people to vote under the new program when you go to the d.m.v. To apply for up to your driver's license you are now automatically registered to vote in less you specifically opt out one research. Researcher who have talked to estimate of the program quite bring as many as 2000000 new names on the California voter rolls by 2020 so this is a massive expansion it was challenging technically and it's a program that we know encountered some challenges during its roll out Mary how do you think this is all going to affect voter trust in the system and elections to come you know at k.p.c. We continue to hear from voters who are impacted by the problems in l.a. County it's worth noting that automated voter registration at the d.m.v. Is just one of many changes in the works for voting in l.a. County this November they're planning to launch a new vote by mail ballots we're also going to go to a totally new system in 2020 that will be primarily focused on voting centers and vote by mail instead of traditional polling locations so all of this is to say that voters really have a lot to keep track of in the coming months and these sort of problems don't instill a whole lot of trust in the system very Plummer is the senior politics reporter here at Cape she's in studio speaking with us about the primary election glitch Mary thank you so much thank you. Turning now to immigration last week Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced it would start using some 1600 federal prison beds to detain immigrants it's the 1st time federal prisons have been used to help immigrants on a large scale under the plan most of the detainees are being sent to Victor Ville in San Bernardino County k.p.c. Been was outside the prison when the 1st wave of detainees arrived on Friday and she joins me now hi Libby Hi Josie Libby can you give me some background about this prison and what's happened there in the past week sure the victor Ville prison complex houses about 3700 federal inmates it's in the southwest corner of the Mojave Desert a little more than an hour's drive from Los Angeles under the agreement with I. Last week the Bureau of Prisons promised to provide $1000.00 beds for immigrant detainees at Victor Ville and to make room the agency moved prisoners out of a medium security area over to another part of the prison and these immigration detainees began arriving by bus on Friday as we were mentioning earlier using federal prisons for immigration detention that's never been done before so why does Immigration and Customs Enforcement say this is happening so there are a couple major reasons Josey 1st ice says the agency needs the beds in federal prisons because border crossings are up over last year it's the same reason President Trump asked for the National Guard to be mobilized back in April the 2nd reason ice needs to use space in federal prisons is that the Justice Department has been following a 0 tolerance policy of holding on to everyone with immigration violations or even just waiting to see a judge even immigrants asking for asylum from the u.s. Government so this isn't just affecting people crossing the border illegally to sum it up a lot more people are being detained and ice is running out of places to keep them we're talking to the reporter Libby dank man who was outside a federal prison in Victor Vale last week when the 1st bus loads of immigration detainees began to arrive Libby what do we know about those detainees and others headed to Victor Vale we don't have a lot of information so far Josie we know that they are men in immigration detention and that's about it the legal community is really scrambling at this point to understand what's going on at Victor Ville for example the attorneys I spoke to aren't sure if some of the men are being transferred from the Adelanto immigration detention facility about 7 miles away or if they're being brought in from the California border or from out of state the Bureau of Prisons has agreed to provide 1000 beds at Victor Ville and my sources tell me about 700 detainees have been bussed in so far this is happening in other cities as well on a smaller scale at the federal detention center in Sea-Tac south of Seattle protesters and elected officials showed up on Saturday a local Congress. Woman told news outlets that she had gotten into visit with detainees at the Sea-Tac facility and she reported that there are a couple 100 women held there the representative said many were asylum seekers who had been separated from their children now will be moving people to prisons instead of county jails or immigration detention centers that's really got to be controversial right absolutely emigration advocates are very concerned that federal prisons are simply not designed to hold immigrants awaiting hearings 1st of all these detainees are facing a civil hearing federal prisons are built to hold convicted felons attorneys say they don't know if the victor vill prison will allow proper access to legal counsel and family visitations that immigrants waiting to go before a judge need and they don't know if the prison is set up to have immigration hearings on site or if they'll have to be done by video conference which attorneys say doesn't allow for the same compelling in person testimony of a live courtroom now what about the staff of the victor Valle prison have they gotten any extra training to be in charge of these immigration detainees that's unclear at this point I spoke to the vice president of the local prison guards union that represents over $600.00 employees he couldn't comment on anything going on inside the facility including extra training but he told me the union is very concerned about staffing levels they've been complaining for months that they don't have enough personnel for the population that's already being held at the victor Ville prison the union had already notified a local congressman and both California senators about being understaffed especially in their medical unit there aren't enough doctors nurses x. Ray tax you name it it's important to know that ice says the agency is fully confident in the care and the oversight provided by the Bureau of Prisons and these federal facilities according to ice are safe and secure places for immigrant detainees and briefly do you know how long the situation of holding immigrants in federal prisons is going to last I says this is temporary and the Bureau of Prisons says the initial agreement is for $120.00 days. But it's flexible up to a year that's Libby Dec men talking to us about the move by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to start using federal prisons to house immigration detainees thanks so much thanks Josie. And we turn now to l.a. U.s.d. Back at the beginning of the school year we met an l.a. Unified School teacher trying to solve a problem the instructor was Lisa all of us who teaches English at Bravo medical magnet high school the problem kids who get stuck in their ruts a student will always get an a and then you have students who will always get out a fail or not yet grade they always always always do that and so I wanted to find a way to salvage both ends of that spectrum when we spoke to our last August's although I was preparing to run her class in a way she hadn't done so in 20 years she carefully sort students into groups the mixed age students with struggling kids her hope was that group members would teach each other well the school year just ended so we thought we check in and see how all this experiment went. Visited her last lesson to find out ahead a 10th grader in her class this year who will just call Henry he's insightful he can read at grade level and he thinks about what he reads and he'll tell you readily he just will not put it down on paper in other words Henry is exactly the kind of kid all the hope her group system would be good for group members would help grade each other's work although would grade students in part on the strength of their groups work and both the high and low performing kids would grow in the process let me show you a little something it's going to at least that's what I hoped so here's a a reflection that a work group put together they were supposed to write about what they learned together it's on this little poster from Henry's group and then they've drawn. In a stick figure of Henry and the text says Together we learned that Iverson was a much better partner than Henry Iverson is another kid in the group this group was a blast in the past it's time to get a new group l m a o. So. Poor little Henry you know and I always says this poster shows what she saw in class that Henry was not applying himself in the group when I asked him about it I said Henry what is this site how do you feel about this and he said on a little bit embarrassed miss but I deserve it wait a minute what Henry told her he's had a reputation for goofing off since elementary school and therein lies one of all the takeaways about the group system for some students the groups worked really well and she has the data to show it however unfortunately it becomes kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure for students who have a reputation of being a bad group member is he in one of the next classes like am I going to meet him or is he well yeah he's here during play period. I kid Slocum when I ask Henry about it he has a different take he says he liked the group work. I'm extending what I know may be kind of similarities differences and Henry says it wasn't just helpful in general he remembers a specific time when his group looked at a paper he'd written and said Henry you're leaning too much on your opinions why don't you try and find more evidence facts they're basically telling you all this is basic You're just a game where you stand with the facts so I take it you may then I don't look for the facts that I would know as for that poster Henry didn't want to talk about it and for the record the other kid Iverson says that was just a joke but also wonders if it might be more like a high school sophomore version of tough love we want to see him succeed because we all agreed that you know Henry could do it he just was choosing not to and he agreed as well by mid-year although stopped sorting kids into the carefully mixed groups of high and low performing students it wasn't that the experiment didn't work she may try it again next year but it just didn't answer the fundamental question she had when she began how do I break the mold that the child has created for himself at the beginning of the year all of a thought the goal would be that kids would help teach each other and whether you're a stagnant a student or a kid who's always struggled your peers could be the x. Factors that helped break your mold now with Henry she says the group may have helped but it was the one on one attention from her that made the real difference it reminds me that you put yourself in a box you can get yourself out teacher needs to help that's me and Henry is passing with all that this year which she says is better than he usually does in an English class covering education I'm Kyle Stokes. And just a quick note about the segment we had on provisional ballots we ran short on time and. Mentioned that in a written statement Secretary of State. Plumber county election officials are responsible for generating rosters and printing them to take to the polling places and that we have identified areas where processes and procedures were not followed by the county office and have offered to work with the new county to further enhance their training the secretary of state's office has said the research problems in other counties there is no evidence of a systematic problem however the election official we mentioned in your county maintains that the problems are related to the rollout of automated voter registration at the d.m.v. Back with more take 2 on 89.3. Josie Huang in for a Martinez later today President Trump will hold a much anticipated summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Il both leaders are already in Singapore where the central focus will be North Korea's nuclear program and whether Kim will give it up in Los Angeles a group of North Korean defectors will be closely watching the talks some of them attend a small Christian ministry in Korea Town called The Giving church Sarah chose family runs that ministry and she talked to them about the summit during yesterday's Sunday service Sarah's joins us now hi sarah Yes you were able to speak with some of the North Korean members of your church yesterday what was the mood among them yes after service during our lunchtime I brought up the topic of doctor from the meeting and one of our North Korean member of Mr Chow He simple he sang Kim Jong lending just China by time there's no way North Korea will give up. Their new code of law and in buy time for what exactly so he's thinking Jonas number one he's buying time to make nuclear weapons more perfect to improve their technology at the same time he's trying to get the condition from people what Mr Cho mentioned was by when he was going up in North Korea people willing to donate their household goods even though they were starving because the government would emphasize how important it is for them to go left and to become a stronger country to be able to become a world leader that I'm married kid and South Korea is that so even the people are starving they are willing to contribute their household and that's he believes that that's what brings the countries together so there's no way North Korea is really going to give up their nuclear weapons so does he think that this summit is all for show or what is the purpose of even having this summit of Kim Jong un is not truly interested in giving up his nuclear weapons so she thinks that Kim Jong un wants to find a way to get humanitarian aid or some of the economic sanctions to be on his favor possibly or removed or some of the trade to be on he favor he thinks that Kim Jong un is trying to find a way to get around that she referred to the previous negotiations the United States had with North Korea where to thank Chancellor remove the humanitarian aid were given to North grad day he was talking about the Bush administration he did not know when but he said they never received any kind of distribution so regardless of any kind of economic or humanitarian aid that's given to North Korea to help the people he doesn't think that is going to happen it didn't happen before there's no reason. To leave they're going to do that now he sounds similarly hopeless about denuclearization as well as Human Rights I know the members of your church have experienced a lot of hardship to escape North Korea and to make it to the u.s. And one of them is made who we actually profiled in a story for a few months ago and she at one point escaped to China to earn money for her young son who needed surgery for serious burns from a kitchen fire and when she returned she was thrown into prison and beaten and her money was taken from her she must have very strong feelings about the Kim regime and what is she telling you. Is very angry with North Korea in general that she was leaving North Korea for good she looked back and said I'm never returning to this land ever. That's how much anger she had something very and she had. Imprisoned her in North Korea she's going to be watching the summit decease me and she wants to see what Kim Goldman is going to do and actually Hugh doesn't even think this talk is more an. American she things that we're wasting our time she was she's kind of like sitting back and say unless you were discussing this chill already know what's going to happen they're not going to give up no. Even if they public is going to North Korea you know whether it's on whether you know it's somewhere great within the country when I find somewhere to develop a new. I'm talking to Sarah Cho she helps run a Christian ministry for North Koreans in Korea Town. And has made clear that for a deal with the u.s. To work he has to stay in power is this something that may and the other North Koreans in your church feel is even acceptable to them definitely not because if Kim's own less. And same power that's just a quite to people dying woman getting right to people not having their freedom to express themselves people keep you know living in lives of the king right James so when they hear this they say this is not that they feel very distressed now sorry you're originally from South Korea and most members of your church are also from South Korea do those folks from South Korea feel more optimistic about the summit so differently from the North Koreans in your church so my church most people we hold there is conservative view political view so far. Levy the one being the summit pockets going to go well there's no way North Korea is going to be nuclear there left then and at the same time even if they do we don't think it's right to keep ourselves away from so many of my Nations because giving can regain power means that there will not be continuing human rights violations and we don't think that's right just to give somebody power it doesn't mean is no case for other people in the country so in your church at least in North Koreans in South Koreans are on the same page we've been talking to Sarah Cho her family runs a Christian ministry in Cape Town that caters to North Koreans Sara thanks for joining us this morning thank you. White evangelicals a lot of political clout in this country coming together to help elect Donald Trump as president but a growing wave of Asian black and Latino evangelicals could change the political landscape in places like Southern California Genelle long wrote about ships in of evangelical America in her new book immigrants evangelicals and politics in an era of demographic change she's a political scientist at the University of Maryland. She joined us earlier to talk about how evangelicals are becoming increasingly diverse white evangelicals are experiencing a pretty dramatic population flatline or declining and so we will increasingly see Latino and Asian Americans along with black evangelicals making up a bigger part of that spiritual community these groups may shift the political character of evangelicals as a whole because they look very different from white evangelicals why are more religious people of color are joining evangelical congregations it's I think has to do in some ways ironically with the anti immigrant policies that many immigrants are experiencing so Asian Americans are predominantly immigrant community which you know as are mostly u.s. Born but still with a large number of immigrants over the past decade as they have experienced a lot of hostility from politicians evangelical churches especially churches have become a kind of refuge I think and allow them to connect with other people when I visited evangelical churches that sought to recruit some of these groups those were some of the most welcoming and spaces I've ever been in there are large concentrations of Asian Americans and Latinos especially in places like Southern California how much of a presence do you see evangelicals of color having there I mean Los Angeles is kind of a ground 0 for growth in America and and Latino Evangelical faces Latino evangelicals have almost doubled since 2010 and slightly lesser extent but is also the case among Asian Americans today about 22 percent of both of those groups are evangelical and in Los Angeles that translates into almost a 1000000 Latino Protestants wow these evangelicals of color that you write about the ones in. Beyond They are typically less conservative then the white evangelicals who are known for having more conservative views and why is this happening exactly so that's one of the most striking findings in my research is that Latino and Asian American evangelicals along with black evangelicals look so different from white evangelicals to something like their support for Trump Latino Asian an evangelical book even less supportive than whites or but it's even more dramatic the difference between those groups when it comes to issues like climate change or taxing the rich you see among which you know an Asian American evangelicals that they tend to be very progressive more than the general population and then another area where we see a big difference is around issues having to do with race and immigration so when it comes to black life matters when it comes to immigration policy white evangelicals as a whole believes that they face the same or more discrimination as Muslims in the u.s. And who are the white evangelicals that feel that way it predicts almost every conservative attitude that is related to policy for evangelicals of color when they feel that they face the same discrimination as Muslims let's say it doesn't translate into the same conservative policy attitudes that's so interesting that white evangelicals in the evangelicals of color respond differently to feelings of discrimination but you also found that there are one or 2 issues that do bridge the color divide it seems that race matters quite a lot in terms of evangelical politics abortion and same sex marriage still these kind of hot button issues that have kind of driven in the past the evangelical agenda do tend to be consensus issues across all of these groups. You know I'm wondering given all the changes that are happening in our continued happened why do white evangelicals remain so politically powerful even as the country becomes more diverse you know I'm looking at numbers where Trump won a larger share of the white evangelical vote in 2016 and then any candidate in the previous 4 presidential elections it really has to do I think with some structural issues in our political system so Asian Americans and Latinos tend to be concentrated in states competitive and that means they're not mobilized as much they have lower registration rates in addition I think it's partly that neither party really knows how to how to mobilize this particular group that are both people of color and who have religious identity as their foremost that any show when I did interviews with Latino and Asian Americans in Houston and l.a. Every single person I interviewed who has even said their spiritual identity was their most important identity even more than their racial identity but the Democratic Party because of the way that it has developed an issues of religious diversity doesn't always put religion in primary tactic in terms of mobilizing that you know as a Native Americans they tend to focus more on racial justice and economic justice which I think can still be a winning category for these groups but doesn't always grab them sure since that's not their primary identity Jenelle long is a professor of American studies at the University of Maryland she's been studying the rise of evangelicals of color Jenelle thanks for talking to us thank you so much Jesse. Back now with take 289.3 k. P.c.c. I'm Josie Huang in for a Martinez life after John Lasseter how will the departure of Disney Pixar as chief creative officer affect the studio Plus we're now living in a world in which w w e maybe an Emmy nominee let's go on the lot. Come to your God and here I want to try. To deny mission accomplished. Our identity fairs are back to Keegan is our guide today and every Monday Hi Rebecca Hi there so John Lasseter is Disney and Pixar as chief creative officer and he's been on sabbatical since November for what's been described as unwanted touching last week it was announced he'll leave Disney at the end of the year and what did the studio Studio have to say about this well on Friday afternoon Disney issued a statement saying that Lasseter will remain as a consultant as you say through years and then held apart at the end of 2018 a Disney c.e.o. Bob Iger praised Lassiter in his statement for quote reinventing the animation business taking breath taking risks and telling original high quality stories that will last forever so the kind of striking about that statement in that it does not make any mention of the alleged behavior that led to Lassiter stepping away in November last year himself it sent a memo to employees apologizing for quote unquote missteps there was no mention of those missteps here yeah it seems like a very very benevolent amicable departure based on that statement now Laster took the helm as chief creative officer both Disney and Pixar in 2006 however he'd been with Pixar for almost 2 decades at that point so what was the state of Disney animation when he joined and how did he turn it around for them. It's hard to overstate how critical John Lasseter has been to the entire art form of animation which is such a big part here in Los Angeles of the sort of culture of the city and end of the movie industry here so John Lasseter had built together with others Pixar into a remarkable creative and commercial success by the time Disney acquired Pixar in 2006 so it's sort of a tale of 2 studios Pixar which is up in Emeryville California was thriving it was a hub of the new form of computer animation while Disney Animation Studios here in Burbank was struggling that they had not managed to adapt from handle on animation they were sort of going through a identity crisis of what is a Disney animated movie now I think it's safe to say that last winter rebuilt that studio together with at Catmull who had been his partner at Pixar and we are in the midst of a sort of renaissance in animation in feature film animation that has largely been driven by those people so over 12 years he's had a huge impact than with a number of hits right that we can probably just rattle off and yeah I mean if you just start with Toy Story which revolutionized the entire way that animated movies are made and looked at you know the 1st time I interviewed John Lasseter was in 2007 when Ratatouille was coming out the movie that he presided over it Pixar were very creative very original There's one opening this weekend this Friday Incredibles 2 which is sort of reinvented the superhero genre and at Disney of course he presided over films like frozen which were massive successes and sort of reinvigorated the studio in your reporting you've made clear that there's been no one as involved as as Lasseter in making Disney a success as since Walt Disney himself and so there's a really big shoes to fill and I'm wondering are there any success. Cers in the wings that may be tapped one of the problems with John Lasseter having sort of braces appetite for work and running these 2 studios well is that there does not seem to have been much of a succession plan in place and according to people who I've talked to at Disney and Pixar there is unlikely to be any executive who takes on the role of running both studios the way that he did there is some discussion of Pete Docter the director of Inside Out taking over an increase creative role at Pixar and Jennifer Levy one of the directors of frozen taking over an increased creative role at Disney Animation Studios but the studio has not announced yet what its plans are and very likely people are not losing their jobs because last hours leaving as we saw with and show when Roseanne Barr was fired from her show but that's not always the case in these situations as I mentioned Now there's something called disgrace insurance which sounds positively Victorian How does exactly yes so I did not know about disgrace insurance until this weekend when I read this deadline story by David Robb he was covering the Producers Guild of America had produced by conference over the weekend and one of the panels was about the insurance industry and there is something called as you say disgrace insurance this covers losses due to sexual harassment or assault drug arrests even murder by cast and crew Wow that seems like it could have come in handy over the so many decades of Hollywood scandals but I imagine it must be pretty expensive or talking about murder as being one of the things covered is it higher than say insuring other hazards like natural does disasters for example well insurance in general is usually one to 2 percent of our producers budget on a production disgrace insurance apparently can double that figure according to this deadline piece it's interesting to see in the. Comments from the insurers at this panel over the weekend they talked about some recent scenarios that could be covered or potentially not be covered one it came up as a. As you mentioned Roseanne Barr her show being cancelled this particular gentleman from the insurance company said he thought that would not be covered because her propensity for making outrageous statements was widely known when the show was greenlit So it was his position that an insurer would not have insured Roseanne Barr for quote unquote disgrace insurance Well this is the rise of disgrace insurance seems to be in direct response to the me too movement which has caused a lot of people to lose their jobs after productions were closed down because of sexual harassment allegations what are other situations this type of insurance could cover Well you know one that there has long been an issue of insuring actors who have a history of drug or alcohol problems that's something that has been sort of par for the course in the industry for decades probably one of the most famous examples of it is when Robert Downey Jr was re entering the film industry after a difficult period he was hard to ensure and that is no longer the case obviously as Iron Man His career has is evolved and he has sort of one of the most bankable men in the industry but there are other kind of misdeeds that insurance has covered for years the need to movement has sort of expanded the range and that in the type of problems that productions are now facing we have just a little bit more time left but I want to get to the Emmys and the fact that there is a new contender throwing its had in the ring. And you were attending a double for your consideration event last week can you just tell us about that thing yeah I must say I've gone to a lot of the sort of award season for your consideration of this is the 1st one where as I was sitting in the theater at the Television Academy in North Hollywood I heard a voice an announcer voice from the rings that sounded like positively of a ringside caliber. Type voice introducing the panelists this is the 1st time that the w w e had come to the Television Academy to sort of make their pitch they are competing in reality categories variety categories for their shows like raw and Total Divas you know this is a nearly 3000000000 dollar company and they were sort of trying to make the case that they are not only good business but also sort of well made and worthy of awards and Ok let's be honest I know they say they were good at story development bragger their chances of winning an Emmy I mean I would say very slim based on the t.v. Academy members that I spoke with after the panel they seemed sort of charmed by the chutzpah of the event but not likely to nominate you for its storytelling and do you think that there's a particular reason why now they're doing this yeah well Debbie Debbie is closing in on a deal with Fox they have are currently in a deal with n.b.c. Universal they've become increasingly valuable as there are few things people watch live on t.v. Anymore wrestling happens to be one of those things they're also very engaged in social media and interestingly sort of one of the most inclusive forms of entertainment out there all right Vanity Fair's Rebecca Keegan who is with us every Monday to talk about the business of Hollywood thanks so much for joining us. All right coming up on take 2 choppers hook in hand now these are the names of the whales you might be able to see if you're whale watching the summer it's apparently a great year to see whale activity find out why when you come back. I'm Josie Huang filling in for a Martinez now this summer is heating up Southern Californians are heading to the coast and so are big beautiful blue whales. This summer is shaping up to be a promising season for whale watching in So Cal James Stewart is the resident whale expert at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach and he spends a lot of time trying to spot the mammoth mammals James welcome to take to Good morning thank you word on land is that blue whales are making a comeback this summer really quickly tell us what's so special about Blue Whales I know they're crazy big right they are they are the biggest animal especially by the way they can reach up to 400000 pounds they can get up to a 100 feet long so definitely a massive animal when you're in the water to get to see them. I can understand why folks are so eager to see a blue whale given that it's the world's largest mammals so what kind of blue whale activity have you seen so far this year but this year has been a lot more active than last year last year having some warm temperatures in the water which means that their food are not going to be as readily available due to some of the conditions and dynamics of the ocean and one of the Eat they're eating mostly krill and if those krill are in the water than They're not really going to hang out they know where to go to find the food and where a summer destination for their food and they hang out before they continue their migration route so where there's more krill there's more blue whales so where is there more krill or what are the conditions under which you would have more krill and so in California has a unique geography where especially l.a. Area we have these sharp canyon walls right outside of our waters and the deep currents care pushing up those walls because of the surface winds of there's winds that are pushing the water away from shore you create this vortex and it gets these nutrients from the deep cold waters move up that feeds the plankton and in the plane to get in by other plankton and eventually of a cruel skull open like that opening effect is present we're going to lot more of the large bailing whales like fin whales and blue whales if it's not of the present because of really high temperatures or the winds are not moving in the right directions we won't see them nearly as often are there specific spots on the coast where we have seen a lot of blue whale activity there's a lot of areas all along the coastline to the whales will hang out if you're in the Long Beach or l.a. Area the whale watches that our staff are on the boat for we're mostly going between point to send a to Mavie Newport but we had a chance to visit a few areas around the l.a. And Huntington Beach area explain to us how you are able to track these whales in the area how is the Aquarium of the Pacific helping to keep an eye on all of them but we have a unique opportunity we have a partnership with the whale watch company that's right outside where I am called Harbor breeze cruises and we put staff on the boat to be our natural as they are the narrator or. The educator for the whale watch and you can also get a photo id and turn out there so they're going out every day an opportunistic data gathering so that wherever the whales might be we go look for them we might find them and we can collect the g.p.s. Coordinates photographing animals so wherever the the whale watch company wants to go that's kind of where we as the naturalist and the data gatherers will go with them and what are you doing with the coordinates and all the data you're collecting about the whales have you been able to learn anything about this population so far we are doing more of the data collection and then we can do some internal analysis if we want to but we're sending all of that information every year to Cascadia research collective and there researchers can do algorithms and all this other math to estimate populations were helping identify the individual blue whales so they all have a tag and some of them get nicknames to some because they've unique characteristics to them What are some of those nicknames one of the more famous ones is called hawk because its tail is missing a large portion of almost half of the tail but that edge is still there the kind of just looks like a hook when a hook is diving It's very distinct you can see it but even other the fin whales or other species of whales get nicknames so there's a hook I've also heard of the chompers jumpers there's a humpback whale who has a distinct method of eating so even though the whales are going to the mid-water to find their food gather the food into their their large mouths in the pleats that can expand and they can get a big old of water chompers comes back up to the surface and literally looks like it's gumming its food so chompers just kind of comes up it looks like it's kind of chomping on something which has got its name so it sounds like we'll be able to see all kinds of different types of mammals besides blue whales blue whales are the ones that are harder to spot what else would we see out on the ocean the summer we saw back over the weekend we've been seeing a lot of fin whales along with their blue whales and dolphins so many dolphins there's a lot of common dolphins that are you know Comet or waters and so they get their name so there's a lot of righty no matter what they are around the water James after talking to you are really. To go whale watching is actually something I haven't done before and in particular I want to see a blue whale How would you describe the experience and scene the world's largest mammal What is that like it definitely is breathtaking it's such a unique experience in the boat so we are out with Harbor Bridge cruises are 85 feet so I think that's a sizeable boat and then we're seeing animals that are bigger than a boat you get out in air and the cattle slows down and we tell us we know we saw a whale in this area we're just waiting for to come back to the surface you know it doesn't matter what you do the anticipation will build and it suddenly a whale comes up you see that below and you can even hear it that's the most beautiful sound is where you can hear them exhaling to get to the surface and then they gas are just gasping in surprise and we even get some people that give a little who everyone saw because it's so exciting to get to see these animals so it's a beautiful opportunity to get to see them and this sounds a great year to do that that's James Stewart he directs both programs at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach and is the resident whale expert over there thanks so much for joining us James they sought for him in the program. This past weekend the l.a. Pride festival took over the streets of West Hollywood where hearing the sounds of yesterday when the parade marched down Santa Monica Boulevard Saturday night however was a lot less joyous and that night the fest was supposed to run into 1 am but the event reached capacity very quickly so organizers closed out the entrances at 10 pm even for ticket holders we've never sold out in our entire history of never sold out of pride festival that's Esteban Monta may or he's the board president of pride the organization that puts on the festival some ticket holders took to social media angry that they waited in line for hours only to be denied entry others said they entered an exit but when they tried to go back in they were also turned away historically we have overfilled the event because what we'll see is a rolling attendance people will come in for a few hours and they'll leave we've never been at capacity in this circumstance this year when people got here they just didn't leave people camped out we've never had that problem before it is a major sea change for the event then you can hold 30000 people and the website reported that just 20000 people attended the fast on Saturday night in 2016 so why the increase this year according to Mark to me or it's the political atmosphere in the country they really want to celebrate our communities they're tired of being torn apart they're tired of the division whether it's in Washington or corporate boardrooms people just want to be uplifted that's Esteban at Montevideo or with pride talking about where organizers went wrong after ticket holders were turned away on Saturday if you're one of them you can contact any pride about a refund.
