Across the united states, doctors have to swear they will do no harm. But some feel that californias right to die law puts that very premise up for debate. And it takes effect today. Kpix 5s anne makovec is live in the newsroom with the fine print on this law and the strong opinions it sparked. Reporter kenny, today california becomes the fifth state in the country to legalize assisted suicide. Our law has the most stringent requirements of all. The patient must be physically capable of taking the medication himself. Two doctors must approve it. The patient has to submit several written requests and there must be two witnesses, one of whom is not a family member. The law passed following the heavily publicized case of Brittany Maynard a 29yearold woman with brain cancer who went to oregon to kill herself in 2014 she took great comfort in the assurance that she was the sole decisionmaker about how much pain she was going to have. Reporter many doctors personally oppose assisted suicide. Some will opt out saying other patients are concerned. Many patients have told me they would lose trust if in fact he were willing to pass that bright line and prescribe a medication that would hasten death. Reporter some religious hospitals rejects the optional together. But there are people who have been waiting for today to take advantage of the new law. Well hear from one of them coming up in the next half hour. Live in the newsroom, anne makovec, kpix 5. So not much of a backup at the toll plaza this morning. We are not tracking any major traffic incidents this morning. So here at the san mateo bridge, things are slowing a bit. 6 30 is when the backup really starts to form for this westbound 92 ride where it will be heavy from the toll plaza. Starting off with futurecast we are socked in low cloud a little bit of fog even a little coastal drizzle this morning. But as we make our way through the day notice how those clouds and the fog kind of push back and stack along the coast so yeah, likely going to stay gray for most of the day along the coast and maybe the peninsula, san francisco, but folks inland you will see sunshine later on today. Some spots warming up near 80 degrees. So why are we staying so cool below average . Well, upper level trough has moved into the Pacific Pacific bringing with it a cooler air mass deepening the onshore winds as the upper level trough has moving into the pacific northwest. Well continue the onshore flow tomorrow. Friday likely going to be the coolest day of the week and then we get a gradual warmup as the trough moves inland. In the meantime, what to expect . Morning low clouds and coastal drizzle. Staying cool to mild once again today with a slight warming into the weekend. High temperatures today topping out near 80 degrees in fairfield, low 80s for the warmer spots inland places like santa rosa and cooler at the coast 60 in pacifica today, 64 san francisco, 68 oakland, 74 in san jose. So again staying cool the next couple of days. In fact, cooler still tomorrow topping out in the upper 70s. But then we start to warm up low 80s for the warmest spots on saturday.
