Were going to begin tonight with the latest package bombing in austin, texas. Police say it is the work of a serial bomber now showing a higher level of sophistication and skill. For the first time a trip wire was used so anybody walking by could set it off. The police call this a significant change from three very targeted attacks when the bombs were left on doorsteps. The toll from the four bombings is two dead and five injured. The latest went off last evening just hours after the police appealed to the bomber to contact them. Omar villafranca is in austin. Reporter the fourth bomb exploded after two men on bicycles hit a trip wire, setting off the device that was placed next to a fence. Cbs news obtained this Home Security video where you can hear the bomb detonate a few houses away. explosion the men, in their 20s, were taken to the hospital with serious injuries but are expected to survive. Austin police chief brian manley. We have seen similarities in the device that exploded here last night and the other three devices that have exploded in austin starting on march 2nd. Reporter several schools were closed or delayed and the travis country subdivision was locked down until the early afternoon. 500 federal agents flooded the scene, looking for more explosives and any clues to help catch the bomber. You tried to reach out to the suspect earlier. Do you think the suspect or suspects still have a message for police . Again, we opened ourselves up for a message. Thats why we asked him to contact us and gave him phone numbers to contact us at. Reporter a trip wire explosive shows more sophistication. Is this person showing off . I think this person is showing that hes quite good. This person is taunting Law Enforcement in the city that hes one step ahead. Reporter fred burton is a former counterterrorism agent. He says the suspect is probably watching Media Coverage of the attacks and when police warned residents to avoid suspicious packages, he or she switched to a different type of bomb. This is a bomber that knows explosives. Hes been around it. Hes either practiced a heck of a lot in rural texas getting this right, or its a learned skill, perhaps something that hes acquired on the battlefield in iraq or afghanistan. In fact, the Austin Police department is still the lead agency, but we have seen some other investigators from san antonio and the Houston Police department. Uber today put the brakes on all road testing of its selfdriving cars after a deadly accident. A pedestrian in tempe, arizona, was killed last night by a self driving uber taxi. It is believed to be the first fatality caused by an Autonomous Vehicle. Our transportation correspondent kris van cleave is in arizona. Reporter the force of the fatal crash dented the front of the uber selfdriving s. U. V. It was in autonomous mode with only a safety driver on board. Tempe, arizona, police say 49 yearold Elaine Herzberg was walking a bicycle across a busy thoroughfare used by pedestrians sunday night. She was not in a crosswalk. Preliminary investigation showed that the vehicle was traveling at approximately 40mph. Our investigation did not show at this time that there were significant signs of the vehicle slowing down. Reporter this is the first known fatal accident involving an Autonomous Vehicle. In a statement, uber said, our hearts go out to the victims family. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident. Last year an estimated 40,100 people died in traffic accidents in the u. S. 94 of crashes are blamed on human error, and Safety Experts believe selfdriving cars will significantly reduce those numbers as Autonomous Vehicles are expected to make up 25 of the global auto market between 2035 and 2040. Companies from alphabet to intel to General Motors are banking on this industry taking off. While accidents involving self driving cars have happened, they tend to be minor. Reporter well, jeff, at this point uber has stopped its testing here in phoenix, san francisco, as well as pittsburgh and toronto. The accident happened by that blue sign there. It is a good distance from the stoplight where the crosswalk is, so one of the things the n. T. S. B. Is going to look at is could any vehicle have avoided this accident. Also, what about that safety driver that was there to take control of the vehicle if need be. We are following Severe Weather tonight in the south. At least one tornado is confirmed in alabama. Powerful thunderstorms raced through the state, bringing hail and damaging winds. Some schools let out early because of this. Tornado watches are up until late tonight in alabama, mississippi, and tennessee. And part of that storm system will form yet another noreaster. Meteorologist eric fisher is following all of this. Eric, what can you tell us . Reporter jeff, you see storms erupting across parts of the south. There you see the tornado watches. Its a particularly dangerous situation, a tornado watch, which means there is a heightened risk for tornadoes over these next several hours. Those storms will quickly race off to the east across north georgia and the carolinas tonight. A new line of storms forms over florida as we head toward tomorrow. But that main risk for tornadoes this evening, in northern alabama, north georgia, and South Central tennessee, definitely take any warnings seriously there. Then storms to the southeast coast and down into florida, more of a damaging wind risk for tomorrow. Then we see the next noreaster take shape, a mixture of snow and sleet in the 95 corridor wednesday into early on thursday morning. Not quite as intense as the last couple, but still some significant snowfall here, and another day of rough travel and some more coastal flooding here on the eastern seaboard. Jeff . Facebook stock was down 7 , losing 36 billion in shareholder value. All of this follows reports over the weekend that facebook may have mishandled data for more than 50 million users. That allowed Cambridge Analytica, the Consulting Firm once confirmed by the campaigns of donald trump and ted cruz, to access data to sway users votes. More on this now from nicholas thompson, editorinchief of wired magazine and a cbs news contributor. Reporter the revelations that have panicked facebook and spooked executives and panicked investors started here at londonbased Cambridge Analyticas offices. The brainchild of now 28year old cofounder turned self claimed whistle blower christopher riley. He claims the Research Firm used social media data to influence voters. All of these pieces of information put together create a digital portrait of who you are. Reporter Cambridge Analytica worked for senator ted cruz and then for donald trump. The idea was to put 2016 political advertising on steroids by very specifically targeting certain people. Heres how it happened in 2014, a Company Called Global Science Research used facebook to distribute a personality quiz to analyze whether users were extroverted or neurotic. The company said it was doing it just for research purposes, but it actually harvested psychological data from all the users and with permission got access to some of the data on their facebook friends. It then sold the data to Cambridge Analytica, which used it to create targeted political advertisements. In total, some 50 million americans may have been impacted. It scaled really quickly. We spent over 1 million on it. So it wasnt cheap, but in terms of the amount of data that was collected and the quality of that data, you know, it was a rare example of where something was, you know, fast, relatively cheap, but high quality. Reporter Facebook Says the use of the data was unauthorized and since 2015 it has banned thirdparty developers from collecting data on users friends, but facebook critics say the company should have done more. David carroll, who has filed a lawsuit to figure out exactly what information was used, believes the social media giant should bear some responsibility. If they did let data get collected in a manner and protect data when they learned about how it was used, then, yes, they are responsible. Thats the deal they make with us, that they protect our data, in order to use the service. Reporter wiley calls the data a political gold mine. If youre trying to influence an american election, thats a onestop shop. Glor so, nick, for the average facebook user, how is this information being used . So, the more information that a Political Campaign has about you, the more they can target ads. They know your personality or your interests. They know your religion and how strongly you believe it, they can target ads against those beliefs. Glor should we be worried . You dont need to be worried that your information will be hacked, your Bank Information will be stolen, but this whistleblower has said this information was used to create ads that turned us against each other and that were deliberately divisive. Glor President Trump has spent part of the last few days airing frustrations about the special counsel investigation in the russian meddling in the 2016 president ial election. This morning the president tweeted, a total witchhunt with massive conflicts of interest. Major garrett is at the white house with more on this. Major, the president also hired a new attorney today. What can you tell us about him . Reporter well, that new attorney is joseph digenova, former u. S. Attorney in washington and for years a darling of this citys conservative legal establishment. Digenova has also been a very tough critic of the f. B. I. s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, and he has denounced special Counsel Robert Mueller in terms very similar to President Trump. Digenova also appears frequently on fox news but was on a washington Radio Station this morning, and he said this about Senior Justice Department leaders. We have a very, very bad situation. Its the worst since watergate. And you have people in charge, Rod Rosenstein to be one, chris wray to be another, who do not understand that this is a crisis. Theyre behaving like children. They dont know how to lead. They dont know how to make public statements. They have disappeared. Reporter the white house says there are no discussions about firing mueller, but there are discussions about an interview between mueller and the president. Thats clearly a subtext to all this. In the senate, republicans today, many of them, urged the president not to fire mueller, warning him of potentially overwhelming and presidency ending consequences if he does. Jeff . In bermuda, the police say they found the body of a missing American College student. 19yearold 19yearold Mark Dombrowski was a freshman rugby player at st. Josephs university in philadelphia. Reporter Monroe County Officials Say the nineyearold shot his 14yearold sister when she refused to hand over a video game controller. Sheriff cecil cantrell. He went over to the night stand where there was a gun, and he got it and come up behind her and shot her. Reporter cantrell says the boys mother was home when he retrieved the gun, which was left unsecured in her bedroom. The boys aunt told us today that he thought the gun was fake and unloaded. She says hes a straighta student and the siblings got along well. The parents of all families should have their guns and things put into a secure place. Reporter 22 million u. S. The pathway home employees were killed earlier this month by an army veteran who had been kicked out of the treatment program. Kpix5s Katie Nielsen joins us live from yountville where the Memorial Service is beginning right now. Katie . Reporter liz, the Memorial Service is starting right now here at the Lincoln Center on the yountville Veterans Home campus. A few moments ago they put out signs saying the theater is at capacity. Nobody else will be allowed inside. Now the doors to the theater opened about an hour and a half ago. Weve seen local community leaders, Law Enforcement as well as friends and Family Members all go inside to pay tribute. Outside a group of more than a dozen members of the American Legion are standing Holding American flags honoring the women who gave so much to their veteran community. Part of where we come to pathways was christine, her passion and dedication that she gave to us veterans. We knew these ladies. They worked with us. Wed given them money. Wed made fundraisers.
