Home insecurity. Reports of a popular home camera system being hacked in houses all across the country. Yo, whats up . Hows your day . Odonnell what the maker of those ring cameras is saying about keeping your family safe. All i want for christmas is you odonnell all she wanted for christmas was a place at the top. How a 25yearold classic is a hit once again. And winning spirit. Seven years after a Deadly School shooting, the triumph that brought an entire community together. This is the cbs evening news with Norah Odonnell, reporting from the nations capital. Odonnell good evening, and thank you so much for joining us. Were going to begin with a deadly storm stretching from the Central Plains and deep south all the way to new england. At least 14 tornadoes were reported today in mississippi and louisiana. That is a rare outbreak in december. One death was confirmed in vernon parish, louisiana. 11 others have died on icy roads in kansas, nebraska, and missouri. An avalanche killed a snowboarder in the mountains of utah, and tonight the danger is far from over as the storms push east. Mola lenghi tonight leads off our coverage with this widespread destruction. Reporter drone footage shows downed trees and damage to homes after a tornado touched down in edwards, mississippi. This school in alexandria, louisiana, was ripped to shreds after a tornado was on the ground for 63 miles this afternoon. 50 miles west in vernon parish, the same twister killed one person in their home. To the north in webster parish, another tornado left just twisted metal and wood, now a part of the landscape where a home once stood. These tornadoes are part of the same storm system that began in the rockies and moved east this weekend. On sunday, harddriving snow wreaked havoc on missouri highways. Parts of kansas city were covered nine inches deep, leaving a trail of stranded cars and icecold misery. Bob beckert is with the Missouri Department of transportation. So we will be out there with our 200plus trucks all day plowing snow as it comes along, but there will be some snow getting on the roadways. There will be some slick spots. Thats our biggest concern. Reporter this fourvehicle crash left three dead near greenwood, nebraska. Further east, in macomb, illinois, a car was hit by a Freight Train when heavy snow caused it to slide onto the railroad tracks. A second wave of snowstorms moving through the st. Louis area has already caused multiple crashes. Now, it may not look like it here in st. Louis, but the heaviest of the snowfall is behind us as this storm system continues to push east. But we are not in the clear yet. Roads will get icy tomorrow, and overnight, plows in the region will continue to try to clear the nearly half a foot of snow thats already fallen, norah. Odonnell all right, mola, thank you very much. That Weather Threat continues for millionsofamericans. Lets get the forecast now from lonnie quinn at wcbs tv in new york. Lonnie, who is in the path of danger . There are two types of danger. It goes from top to bottom. Lets start off by going south to the gulf states. We have tornado watches and warnings in louisiana, mississippi, alabama, parts of tennessee, as well. By midnight or so, things will start the calm down a bit for you. But until then, keep your eye on the sky. The Northern Tier of this system is about the frozen precip, and we do have Winter Weather advisories anywhere from nebraska all the way into massachusetts. As this storm system pushes toward the eastern seaboard, it is going to be transitioning. Heres the problem its not going to be just snow. Its going to switch over to some ice and some sleet, as well. The way we see it working out, this is 7 00 a. M. , you got the look, norah, at that pink color. That shows you icing anywhere from rhode island into connecticut and into portions of new york and new jersey, and by lunch time, some of the same areas are still dealing with ice. It could be like a skating rink out there. Norah, lets go over to you. Odonnell lonnie, thank you. This is going to be an historic week, and the pressure is on for undecided members of the house to declare for or against impeaching president trump. The votes expected in just two days, and the runup has been marked by cheers, jeers, and even one party defection. Nancy cordes reports tonight from the capitol. I will vote yes. Reporter with the house Impeachment Vote just two days away, democrats from swing districts have begun to get off the fence. This is about using our National Security for his own personal political benefit. Reporter michigans Elissa Slotkin could barely be heard today over the boos and cheers. President trump won her district in 2016 by seven points. I made this decision out of principle. Reporter so far two House Democrats say theyre voting no. One is minnesotas colin peterson. I just dont agree with it. Reporter the other is new jerseys jeff van drew, who is poised to switch parties this week. He gained a new democratic opponent today, even as he lost most of his d. C. Staffers. Good afternoon, everyone. Reporter both sides are girding for the senate trial to come. In a letter, democratic leader Chuck Schumer argued the senate should subpoena four witnesses who did not appear before the house. Trials have witnesses. Thats what trials are all about. Reporter republicans noted that schumer voted against key witnesses during the clinton impeachment trial. Why do you feel differently this time around . The witnesses in 99 had already been given, had already given grand jury testimony. We knew what they would say. The four witnesses we have called have not been heard from. Reporter republican leader Mitch Mcconnell has advocated for a faster trial, possibly without witnesses. Like schumer, his views on this issue appear to have evolved since 1999 when it was a democratic president facing impeachment. Norah . Odonnell nancy, thank you. There is breaking news tonight from americas largest exporter, boeing. The company now says it will suspend production of its troubled 737 max plane starting next month. The max was grounded worldwide after two deadly crashes. Kris van cleave covers aviation for us, and, kris, is this expected to send shock waves through the u. S. Economy . Reporter norah, it certainly could. Boeing has 600 suppliers, so youre talking about tens of thousands of supply chain workers that will be affected by this potentially, thats in addition to the 12,000 boeing employees who build the 737. Boeing says its not planning any layoffs or furloughs at this time. Its the first time in 22 years boeing has had to temporarily halt production of airplanes. This comes after the f. A. A. Says the 737 was not cleared the fly again this year. This was a move boeing said was possible if the grounding went into 2020. Thats going to happen. They have not set an exact date. They have not said how long it will go on either. They have about 400 planes they cant deliver until the f. A. A. Says the plane can fly again. Odonnell thats why this is big news. Kris, thank you very much. Tonight both west point and the Naval Academy have launched investigations into what cadets and midshipman meant when they flashed a hand signal at the armynavy football game. David martin reports on this growing controversy. Reporter what were they thinking . During a pregame show, a few cadets and a midshipman flashed a sign that to most people simply means okay but has been classified as a hate symbol by the antidefamation league. Oren segal is director of the leagues center on extremism. We saw increasingly White Supremacists and other extremists trying to leverage it, basically use pop culture references or this symbol in particular to try to be a signifier of white supremacy. Reporter what is it about a circle and Three Fingers that says white power . Some people suggest the Three Fingers looks like a w, and when you have a circle in your hand it looks like a p. Reporter its been used by the alleged perpetrator of the mass shooting in christchurch, new zealand, and showed up at this donald trump rally in florida. Here a member of a far right group called the proud boys flashes it while wearing a mask of the cartoon character pepe the frog at a march in washington, d. C. Theyre constantly trying the take our everyday symbols and language and turn it into something hateful. Reporter it also figures in a mindless game which was showcased on malcolm in the middle and has caught on in the military. Basically, if you can make the other guy look at your hand when youre doing this below your waist, you goat hit them in the arm. Its stupid, but, hey, you get to hit people. Reporter another cadet seems to have thought it was stupid, because he tried to push the hand signal out of sight. Whatever those young men were thinking, they ended up giving White Supremacists exactly what they crave, a breakthrough moment on national television. Norah . Odonnell that continues. David. Thank you. Today a School Resource officer in North Carolina was fired after disturbing video showed him bodyslamming an 11yearold student who weighed just 70 pounds. Mark strassmann tells us that officer could lose more than his job. Reporter brace yourself for an outrageous moment, a sheriffs deputy escorting a middle school boy lifts and body slams him. A student who weighed 70 pounds. Body slammed him twice, a School Resource officer who is supposed to protect students. The family of the unidentified 11yearold says the boy was knocked out. We first saw the video we were shocked. Reporter the sheriff says the unidentified deputy has been fired. I dont expect my deputy or any deputy in Law Enforcement in North Carolina to carry out their duties in that way. Reporter there are no official statistics about Excessive Force involving School Police and students. One national twoyear study showed at least 141 complaints of School Police officers with abusive use of force. North carolina requires its School Resource officers get additional training. It is unclear whether the deputy involved in this body slam got his. No student should ever experience this in any way, especially not in our schools. Reporter john miles is the middle school boys grandfather. Its painful, because you send your kid to school to learn. Reporter miles says his grandson wont return to the school. It is not clear how severely the boy was hurt, norah, but that could play a part in any potential criminal charges against the deputy. Odonnell mark, thank you. Home security cameras are supposed to give you peace of mind. We have seen a sharp increase in creepy incidents, strange voices coming through the device, sometimes threatening the people in the house. We asked jamie yuccas to look into who is behind this and how you can stop it. Yo, whats up . Hows your day . Reporter the videos are alarming, in the most recent, a disembodied voice scared the woman sound asleep in connecticut. Hey [bleeped]. What do you want . Just come here. Let me see your face. Reporter in another case, a hacker talks to an eight Year Old Girl in her bedroom. Who is that . Im your best friend. Im santa claus. Reporter in others, the unknown voices use racist taunts. Did your child come out black or like light skinned . I dont know. What . Reporter according to a vice news report, some of the incidents may have been prompted by nulledcast, that encourages hackers to hack cameras and stream it live. Allegedly theyve asked hackers to calm down due to the investigation. But consumers can protect themselves from these scary hacks. Mike reemer, a Cyber Security expert, says its simple. Take the default password off and put your own password on. Reporter so were making it easy for the hackers. Yes, we are. Were all excited to get the new object or the new toy and plug it in and play with it, but we really need to have consumers reading the instructions and following the instructions to set it up. Reporter on its site, nulled says the group does not and will not tolerate this type of harassment. Here at ring headquarters, the company says it sent emails to customers over the weekend reminding them of five ways to protect their cameras, like requesting a text message with a Security Code that must be entered to use them. Norah . Odonnell good information, jamie, thank you. Tonight a mississippi man who has been tried six times for a crime he insists he did not commit is enjoying his first taste of freedom in more than 22 years. Curtis flowers was released from prison months after a big victory in the supreme court. Janet shamlian spoke with him today. Reporter free on bail, Curtis Flowers made the long walk out of a mississippi jail today. Looking forward to christmas. Reporter did you think this day would ever come . I knew it would, but i didnt know when. But i always knew it would. Reporter flowers was charged in the 1996 murders of four people during a Furniture Store robbery. There were two mistrials. Four convictions were reversed on appeal for prosecutorial misconduct. The final reversal came in june from the supreme court, ruling prosecutor doug evans systematically prevented African Americans from serving on the jury. The last conviction had landed flowers on death row. Cherita baskins is flowers sister. Best Christmas Gift i ever received. Reporter in court the judge strongly criticized the prosecution. I want to note the troubling fact that in the nearly four months this case has been back before the court, the state of mississippi has taken absolutely no action of any kind in furtherance of this prosecution. Reporter tonight surrounded by family and friends, flowers found it hard to describe how he felt. I dont know. Im so excited right now. Reporter flowers is still under indictment in the case, but his attorney has filed a motion to have it dismissed. While that motion is pending, flowers must wear a monitoring device. Norah .
