This is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. This is our western edition. It got worse today for General Motors and the owners of more than 2. 5 million recalled calls. There is something wrong with them, and its potentially dangerous. Once again, it involves the ignition system. Fixing this new problem will cost g. M. 1. 3 billion. The car maker said today it is suspending two engineers with pay in connection with the decadelong delay in the initial recall. Jeff glor has been following the story from the start and has the latest. Reporter g. M. Said today, in g. Mtion to problems with ignitions, which can turn off while the car is being driven, keys in the recalled vehicles can be pulled out while the engine is running. All of the cars had already been becalled to replace the ignition switch. Todays recall means a separate part, the ignition lock cylinder, will also be replaced. Some customers will get new keys. G. M. Says its aware right now of several hundred complaints. Carl brower of kelleys blue book. If they take the key out and they think the car is off and in park, which is what its supposed to be in before you can take the key out, thats where you get the danger of a roll away, for instance, because if youre parked on a hill and you think the car is in park and the engines off, and you pull the key out and get out of the car, its going to roll away from you. Reporter the fixes will be turn on every single chevy cobalt, saturn ion, saturn sky, pontiac g5, Pontiac Solstice and chevrolet hhr ever produced, 2. 6 million vehicles in all. General motors is continuing to comprehensively attack this problem. Theyre leaving no stone, or in this case, no part unturned that could possibly be involved. Reporter the ignition recalls overall will cost the company more in the First Quarter of this year than g. M. Tede in the First Quarter of 2013. Repairs are scheduled to begin at dealerships tomorrow and will rekely continue through october. Last week, testifying before congress, g. M. C. E. O. Mary barra told lawmakers her focus was on fixes not blame. Federal regulators say the company is violating an order to turn over all documents related to the recall. G. M. Says even though both fixes need to be made, the cars on the road right now are still safe to drive, as long as drivers use the key only. But, scott, theyre also offering loners, and g. M. Says 22,000 drivers have gone that route so far. Pelley the key only and nothing else on the key ring. Jeff, thank you very much. Today, a new Study Suggests that the u. S. Governments billion dollar stockpile of flu medicine may have little effect in a pandemic. The government amassed enough flu medicine for 65 million people, and the risks can be high. The outbreak of 1918, for example, killed more than 600,000 americans. Dr. Jon lapook has been looking into this new study. Reporter the report challenges the assumption that antiviral medications like tamiflu and relenza offer significant help against the flu. Oratcochran collaboration, an independent worldwide medical research group, reviewed 24,000 patients who use tamiflu. The major findings the drug decreased symptoms slightly, by 17 hours, from seven days to 6. 3. There was no compelling evidence it prevented pneumonia or reduced the risk of death. Peter doshi is one of the authors. Theres no good evidence youll reduce the risk of hospitalization or any evidence that it reduces the spread of influenza between people. Reporter critics like doshi say the review raises questions because tamiflu is a key component of the governments plan to handle a future flu pandemic. To help decrease hospitalizations and deaths, the u. S. Department of health and Human Services has spent 1. 3 billion stockpiling this class of drugs. T we need to have evidence informed policy decisions, and so that starts with independent reviews of the evidence before you go out and you spend billions of dollars stockpiling udyse drugs. Reporter roche, the makers of tamiflu, issued a statement of dng the company fundamentally disagrees with the overall conclusions and cites a study they funded last year showing tamiflu was associated with the reduction of the risk of death by 19 . Barry clinch is a scientist with roche. A significant body of expertise looked at our data and said tamiflu is effective at treating a serious respiratory ur dction. Reporter the centers for idsease control said it continues to recommend antivirals like tamiflu for treating the flu. Pelley but, jon, tamiflu was new qed by the fda years ago. Why this new question . Reporter the f. D. A. Never sym on the label it decreased complications or pneumonia. It said it decreased symptoms about a day, and its taken a while for the independent data to get to groups like the cochran collaboration. And people are looking at it, saying what does an independent analysis show . The c. D. C. Is standing pat with the recommendation to still use these drugs, so i think we have not seen the end of this discussion. Pelley jon, thanks very much.
