Watermelon Man that is Mungo center a and his band that is an abbreviated and somewhat popularized rendering of a bebop jazz piece that was written by Herbie Hancock where the story goes in the fall of 1982 Herbie Hancock was filling in on piano one time with Mongo Santa Maria as band this was a jazz club and by request Herbie Hancock played the melody well of Santa Maria and his band joined in folks got up and started dancing went over pretty well so Mongo Santa Maria asked Herbie Hancock if he could maybe go ahead and record the song and presto top 10 record in the spring of 1963. I'm Craig Faulkner and you are tuned to American rhythm the gourmet oldie show part one of the Thanksgiving edition of all songs about food so I want to continue here with another watermelon song this is an old traditional that was purportedly written and at least was 1st copyrighted all the way back in 1882 by one Thomas p. Westendorf under the title watermelon smiling on the vine There have been a number of variations recorded over the years under different titles and with softly different lyrical emphases perhaps the most popular rendition was done by good tenor in the skillet lickers in 1906 Uncle Dave Macon recorded it was also the longtime theme song of Bill Monroe but the version that I've picked to play for you is an archipelago vocal group rendering that has a nice old traditional feel and also some very fine singing as you will hear so from how scratchy old Columbia 78 r.p.m. Record this is the Birmingham Jubilee Singers and their very fine version of watermelon smiling on the vine. I don't want to bridge Braehead between his. Red Dragon maiden. I'm never satisfied. I wote the train was false we are all the we have show files on the good side. Popularized rendering of a Jamaican work song that is sometimes credited with starting the calypso music fad here in America in the late fifty's and early sixty's recording was made in the fall of 1956 and prior to that was hungry men and that was Louis Jordan doing a song there it was written by Bobby Troup perhaps best known for writing another song called Route 66 that hungry man was recorded Aug 9th 1949. And the one in the middle issue fly Pa and Apple Pan dowdy and that was June Christy sing and with the Stan Kenton orchestra that recording was made December 26th in 1905 The song is it's kind of a curious hybrid you may recall an old folk tune called shoo fly don't bother me that was originated back in the Civil War Well it seems that there then came along a circus animal that was named shoo fly the boxing mule. Oh well so the story goes and then after that along came a brand of sweetener that was called shoo fly molasses Yass which was used in baking he American Centennial cake of 876 and this cake then began to be called Shoe fly pie Hey follow that well it's kind of standard and was actually sung around campfires back when many of us were kids and the 2nd one was for him friends sauce the Nat Cole Trio that recording was made October 11th in 1945 and there's all sorts of theories out there as to what that song is supposed to mean here you know there's much of metaphors in terror that are unfamiliar to me so I should probably leave it alone and we started off with watermelon smiling on the vine and Birmingham jubilees singers recorded October 6th in 1927 I'm Craig Faulkner and you are listening to the American rhythm Thanksgiving show part one sit tight I'll be right back. I'm Craig Faulkner and you are tuned into Part one of the American rhythm Thanksgiving show so Up next I'm going to play you a food sauna that is. About as American as can be I suppose we could say although the dish is thought to be largely of French origin the song is jumbo alive and songwriting credit is given to Hank Williams But there is a back story that paints a more complicated picture if you will and as best I can tell the melody 1st showed up in 1937 recording by the Louisiana Ramblers who was called our lawns coochie coochie and I had the singer and piano player in the Ramblers was one Julius papa Cairo the Empress and he is the guy who created the melody so he reprise did it about 10 years later in a new song called Grand Texas that was recorded in both French and English versions. Now this song was known to Hank Williams and to a fella named Moon Mulligan who was known as the king of the hillbilly piano players now Williamson Moloch and were touring around Louisiana and playing together in late 51 early 52 and it was during this time that the melody of grand Texas morphed into the song jumbo lawyer some people think that had moon Mullick and was the principal songwriter and that Hank Williams just took it from him took credit songwriters credit other think that they probably wrote it together and that moon Melican either sold his interest to Hank Williams or just simply gave it to him. First we will probably never know what really happened the song of course became a huge hit for Hank Williams was number one in the country market for months and also very popular as a pop tune done by Joe Stafford and at this point there have been over $200.00 subsequent commercial recordings of the song it's really an American standard I expect that you have probably heard Hank Williams version but perhaps not Moon mulligans rendering so that is the one that I'm going to play for you recorded July 9th 1952 and this was just less than a month after the Hank Williams version so here is Moon Moloch unsing and him playing piano and his version of jumble I. Enterprise I was cornbread bogey art gun and here's Arizona Playboys recorded in Houston in July of 1949 and the 2nd one was banana split from my baby Louis Prima Sam be a terror in the witnesses recorded September 13th in 1956 and we started with jumble I am moon Moloch and singin in plan piano recorded July 9th in 1952 and one of the outcomes of the question as to who wrote that song was that when jumbo life came out and instantly became hugely popular pop a Cairo lamp or as a fellow I told you about who wrote the original melody while he was infuriated that his melody had been expropriated without any compensation her even any acknowledgment and he became very disillusioned with the music business and refused to ever record again so I read these days has the matter it definitely would have been settled in court. I'm Craig Faulkner and you are listening to part one of the American rhythm Thanksgiving show all the songs are in one way or another about food so a familiar lyrical theme in American vernacular music is the food sex metaphor I would expect that it's common in cultures all over the world you know as much as food and sex are the most basic elements of physical life. The human mind is thus permeated with images and desires associated with all that and of course it's going to come out in the folk music of the culture so here are a few examples in this instance it's folks taking some metaphorical liberties with the image of gravy will start in 1989 with Ethel water is this is called bread and gravy. Rain and bring some rain to bravery. Then they can not. They can. No more. On low grade to brave the halls of. Not too nice one. Friends and money lots of friends money. No more with the.
