interviewed by police. morales' attorney says after his client was read his miranda rights, he "barely nodded his head." attorney peter tenny claims his client made no verbal statement, and was completely silent. tenny says that is insufficient to satisfy the burden of a valid, voluntary miranda waiver. an estherville, iowa, man says he won't seek a change of venue in his murder trial. lee christensen is charged with 1st degree murder in thomas bortvit's death back in june. bortvit's family reported him missing on june 6th. the 19-year-old's body was found the next day in a rural part of emmet county. the day after that, christensen was arrested at the minneapolis airport. christensen's trial was orginally set for today. that trial was delayed over concerns about a potential conflict of interest regarding the attorney representing christensen and members of his family. transportation security administration officials say they found a loaded firearm at the sioux gateway airport. the weapon was found on sunday in a carry-on bag. the airport and interviewed the passenger after taking possession of the weapon. the passenger was then allowed to continue on to the flight. (sheila) chief meteorologis t ron demers is here to tell us more. weather ad-lib our pattern has been giving mainly northern siouxland some quick going to see that happen again tonight. there snow that may clip the northern parts of the ktiv viewing area with a quick dusting of too heavy. we could even see a few flurries in sioux city as well. in addition to the snow showers, we'll see some areas of fog both tonight and into wednesday morning. it's looking like tomorrow will be the coolest of the next seven days with highs in the 30s. reynolds began a statewide stem tour in sioux city today. reynolds stopped at morningside elementary. dropping in to a few classes asking students about various projects. reynolds says she shares what she learns on these visits with other school districts...like grassroots projects such as loess hills elementary's computer programming designation. students showed off coding projects there. something reynolds says she sees tremendous opportunity in offering in elementary schools. "we're actually seeing the numbers go in the wrong direction, not just in iowa, but nationally, especially with young girls," said kim reynolds, lt. governor of iowa. " if we want to fill that pipeline of talent and if we want to keep our young people in the state of iowa, this is an industry sector that's growing, that will continue to grow and provides tremendous opportunities." reynolds is scheduled to visit school in march. reynolds also sat down with ktiv's sarah te slaa to discuss the nearly two million dollars raised for the summer reading program pilot study. it's a test run of the program the state will be rolling out in 2017. "sometimes summer reading programs are about maintaining where they are at, we are really hoping that not only can we maintain where they are at but elevate them to a higher level," says reynolds. the governor's office says about 25 percent of the state's third graders aren't reading at their grade level. this program is to help those students who are struggling. several school districts in siouxland have signed up for the program, including sioux city. a former storm lake city council member announced she will run for a seat in the iowa legislature. sarah huddleston served three terms as a council member in storm lake. she was appointed by governor tom vilsack as a commissioner for the latino affairs commission under the department of human rights. she is running in house counties. an iowa senate panel advanced a bill that would make it a hate crime to commit an offense against a person because that person is transgender. the bill must pass out of the full committe by friday to meet a deadline and stay alive this session. the sioux city community schools are changing their lunch menus. but, before that happens, students are helping decide what they'll be eating. ktiv's tommie clark spoke with students who got to "taste test" some new foods. pepperoni pizza, potato wedges, turkey meatballs, orange chicken and hamburger patties were on the menu. "it was pretty good. the wedges were kind of dry and what not. the meatballs they didn't taste that great, but i mean they're all right," said west middle school 8th grade student, riliegh belt. "there was a couple of dry stuff like the meatballs, they were good, but they were a little dry. i think i could have some milke with that otherwise it was good," said west middle school 8th grade student, bryson brinkman. food tastings take place every year in the school district and are used to decide what gets served at lunch. reporter: "have you found it to be very effective?" "yes, absolutely. just because we think it looks good and tastes good doesn't mean it's going to be eaten by our customers who are our students," said sioux city schools food service director, rich luze. students say they're glad to have a say in what they scarf down. in sioux city...tommie clark...ktiv news 4. >> students say chicken and pizza were their favorites. the rest of the results of the tasting will be added up and some possible additions may be coming to the school's lunch menu. university extension and outreach program helped to local gardeners "grow" their knowledge, today. the discussion focused on vegetables, common pests, food safety regulations and cover crops. a commerical horticulture specialist says he sees cover crops being incorporated more into growing. "a cover crop is a non-harvested crop that you're growing in the field that you're not growing it for money, you're growing it for the soil health benefits whether it be weed control, building organic matter controlling passagens or any of those such things," said iowa state university extension and outreach commercial horticulture field specialist, joe hannan. one gardener says he learned about insect control and proper composting. "take an issue as simple as getting dressed in the morning right, the guys have to decide between like the stone khakis and sand khakis and the women have to figure out for this particular meeting, or client or whatever, how do i figure out what the right match is. there's just more ways to go wrong." but business leaders say one way to address the challenges begins by learning how to take feedback. "we're going to talk about how to take charge of your own feedback and drive your own learning by being a better just so important for women leaders maybe in particular who often get quite critical feedback to learn how to handle those with grace." su "leaders at the event spoke about women's roles in the growing economy." "i think everybody knows that diversity in the workplace is what most businesses need to succeed and so women are almost 50 percent of the workforce and it really is an economic issue," said lt. gov. kim reynolds. debi durham, director of the iowa economic development authority referenced an article she read that said by 2028, women will control about 75 percent of the discretionary income. and students are part of that future, one nursing student says its important to learn from women leaders before entering the workforce. "i we're always representing," said laura smith, a nursing student at western iowa tech community college.
