She was standing out 106degree heat getting people to sign up to be eligible. Shes awesome. Like dedication. No question. Are you kidding me . So i did. I registereled. It was very easy. It was very exciting. And i learned a couple of things. Now is a great time to register to vote. We have this upcoming election in november. So you have from now until october 8 if you want to there is three ways to register. Or online and in person until october 18. So snail mail is good. Its going to take a little longer. Get it in by the 8th . Yes. If you havent done it yet, if youre new to lose like i am, go to clarkcountynv. Gov. Margaret, her mother turned 18 the year womenner allowed to vote in this country, 1920. No kidding. Theyre offering a bachelors degree in Emergency Services administration. The first in the state. Now explaining why, we have the fire gear here next to me, here to tell us all about it, get us fired upped, csn is michael flores, director of government affairs, and greg gammon, the director of fire programs. Great having you. How are you . Thanks for having us. Csn is the first to offer this bachelor in fire and Emergency Services administration. What made them decide to do this . Why is it so important to have in our state . About four years ago, shortly after i started at csn, there was something that during my 30 years on the fire service that the state always needed. Those of us who had aspirations to become a chief officer or higher. We had to go get a bachelors degree. State. There was 13 universities to choose from and we had to go find one. We had to spend out of state tuition and it was pretty expensive. It was just something that nevada needed with the amount of firefighters that are within the state. All that out of state tuition has going somewhere else. It should have been staying here. So put together a program and fortunately, the board of regents approved it this past june. This is great. It sounds l fill ago need. Seems like there is a lot of chance for growth for this program as well, right . There is. In the fire service, back when i started, you didnt have to have degrees. Maybe if you you wanted to be te fire chief, you had to have an Associates Degree or masters degree. It depended on the department. But over since 1999, Fire Departments, especially here in las vegas, started requiring degrees to either be a captain, officer. So youd see that on your career path. Ive been on two years and eight years, here is where i see myself. To be able to compete for that position, i have to go get an education. So we were all going out of state. So now were here in state. So the numbers are really starting to grow. We anticipate our bachelors program, the numbers to get much higher. Weve got 17 in our first class. Great. Thats just with word of mouth. Well start nationally. There is only 14 programs in the country. No kidding. Wow. Thats so cool its phenomenal. This is exciting because now instead of going out of state, youll have people coming in state potentially. Correct. And then perhaps, hey, you want to be a firefighter, we could use some help. Lets talk about the dallass for csn. They started on monday. Is it too early to get started . Is it sorry, youll have to wait we started classes on monday. So parking lots are full and classes are full and you have til sunday, september 4, to register for late registration. So you can still get in . Yep. There is also shorter classes during the semester that start later in the fall. You can still sign up for. Awesome. What if some people arent able to register now . Is there a chance to join in later than the fall . Absolutely. The spring semester, later on. But you can still register for the fall right now til september 4. Fall. Just really exciting thing, things happening at csn. Csn, its the biggest as far as enrollment. So many people that go to csn. Its so flexible for people to say i dont have the time or i have weird hours. There are so many degrees and programs to choose from at csn. How many are there now . We have about 71 programs and we also do hospitality and the fire program is so exciting. I did an Explorer Program in high school. And everybody was looking for the upper hand. For us to have this here at csn, on our campus and state is huge. How important is our Fire Department . Its huge. Exciting, the program. Can i try the hat on . Oh, boy. You bet. Shawn, you began be jealous . Okay. Not only can people enroll right now or people looking for financial aid. Is there any available. The awards have been given out for fall and spring. Pretty cool. This is just a tiny bit, tiny sample of what youll see at ballys. There is over 20 full body specimens and over 200 individual organs and parts, as they call them. Tell us more about the exhibit. So the exhibition sort of anatomy lesson. I think what people want to see, people want to see a dead body, to be honest. And honestly, you can go look at a textbook. You can look at models. But there is nothing like seeing the real thing. These are all real human specimens. Right now in front of us . Including you. These arent like plastic or rubber casts. Theyre the real thing . Yes. So all of the fluids and liquids are removed from the body, and then theyre put in a vacuum and impregnated with liquid silicone. Basically in theory, they are silicone now. But they once were this hand once moved. Wow. That head once was on someones body. Thats a head . Wow. You talk about an mri, you see these slices that the doctors or physicians look at, these what they are looking at. So this is you can obviously this is the brain. The entire head. You can see the cavity around the brain, if there is too much fluid in the brain. There is a loft different techniques to determine the health of your heads. Speaking of brains, we happen to have one. Whats cool about this. Is it okay to pick this up . If youre really careful. I just want to make sure we get the shot. Dont move it off. I wont. Whats cool about this is when you do hold it, you can hold it for him if you want. See the nerve bundles and then as they come out. We have a beautiful spesin the exhibition that the back is dissected. You can see where all these little nerve endings happen. These are the nerve endings . Yeah. These are nerve bundles. They get much thinner. Can i pick this up . Sure. Its so interesting because people with back pain, you have a little tweak in your back and you just picture, what is it thats bothering me . And here we go. Thats one of the cool things exhibition. They see some kind of ailment that either they have or someone they love has. So we have also some pathology specimens. So you can see cancer. You can see gallbladder. You can see kidney stones. So lets say you have car pal tunnel, you might come in the move gallery. This is more of a muscular specimen. But you can see what the carpals much computer work or whatever, you can see what it looks like. Not only do you this this anatomy and frizz congresswoman, we go further and get into interesting cultural connection that we all share as humans. I think we have a disconnection when we hear carpal tunnel or we hear cancer or whatever it might be. Because its all within this rather we see it on the screen, but dont see it, see it. Thats right. Do you know what the largest organ in your body is . Th the skin. We have a piece of skin which is a little bit disturbing, i have to say for some people. You actually have the skin . We have the skip. Its the largest organ in the body, one of the most important muscles in the body is the heart. cause think about it. We dont think about it. We sleep, we eat. We walk. Right now its going. Ailments. A lot of people have Knee Replacements or knee pain. If you tore your acl, you might not know what it looks like. But here it is. You can really understand how the femur connects through the knee into the tibia. You can just relate to these we also have a Knee Replacement in the exhibit. We have an area called repair at the end where we talk about taking care of yourself. We show a lot of sort of techniques and ways that doctors use to spread muscles apart to get to areas or bone grafts or here next to us, you could bring this to the table, to the slot machines. Show them the before and after. This is an example of a healthy lung. Actually childs lungs are pink. But in all of us, at a very early age. As we breathe in just pollutants and regular stuff. Now if you are in a highly, highly polluted area or you spend a lot of time spoking, like a lot of time smoking, this now. Blackened. Here is a good example of a healthy and a diseased lung. Just profound. Crazy. This is so interesting for people of all ages, i think. If you are my age, i am. Im thinking about what ailments i have and how shawns brain is. Youre doing really neat things in this exhibit. You can get married . Yeah. Weve of graveyards next to churches, they ran out of room. So they pulled up bones and put them in the base of the church. You hear of the kata combs in paris. They created shrines with these bones. In our exhibit, we created a little chapel, where you can go get married. So its on the screen now. No kidding. Its beautiful. This exhibit is not just its about who we are and what we do and think about with our bodies. So a great thing we talk about in this exhibit is when you die, you get cremated or buried or whatever. Well, in gana, they have fantasy coffins. So if you were an airplane pilot, you might be buried at sea. If youre a fisherman, you might be get buried in a giant fish. So for you guys, like a camera or chair. Basically you download the app, you personalize it. It will tell you exactly how many cups of fruits and vegetables you need to eat every day. So we created this app so that everybody can easily find the walking and the biking trails. The temperature will be cooling down here pretty soon. Hopefully. People are going to be looking for opportunities to get outside and to be active with families. So this is just a great app to be able to find a trail that is near you. Were taking a look at the app right now. I love this. Its not find a trail near me. You can actually say, its almost like a dating app. I want someone thats not concrete, thats a longer action more challenging and you can put all those things and youll find your youre bound to find something. There are so many trails within this valley. There are hundreds of miles of trails in the valley. Youre right. You can search by the level of difficulty, the type of trail, trail. Maybe you want to make sure there is drinking fountains or benches. Where can you take your pets. All of those types amenities are searchable within the app. So you can really customize the trails to fit your needs. I have to say also very importantly, i feel like its easy to use this app. Right . And once you find that trail that is the one you want to go on, you just hit directions and it takes you right to it. For the ones you love the most, you can bookmark them so you can keep going back so you remember, whats that one trail we went out of the 782 trails . Oh, that one. You can go back to it. So there is other apps that the Southern Nevada Health District has as well. You guys are like the app store. I know. First of all, our apps are free to the community. So we have nutrition apps. One is healthy recipe called snap cooking app. The other is called sugar savvy beverage. It lets you know how much sugar is in the beverages youre can kind of keep it scan the bar code on that soda. Right. Then we have a physical activity app where you can enter your physical activity. And it tracks it for you. Fantastic. Ultimately i think were all burying our heads in these phones and not really back did back in my day, you would go out and just experienced the world. Pow you kind of have to get a kick in the pants to do this and encourage to you do this. This is a great way im with you. I feel this gets you out in nature quicker.
