We are at the corner of ward low and jeffson wardlow and jefferson street. House after house after house is burned. Right here you have a stairwell going up. There is a path right here. You see here in the front. Thats the roof that came down as the rest of the house was burned down. Theres homes, cars, trucks, everything gone and then right across the street if you pan to the right there, you can see homes standing completely untouched. We have Scott Mcclain here, the battalion chief. This fire seems very, very different. Why is that . Reporter well, weve been informing folks that the fires up here this year have been more of map driven and field driven because of the Drought Conditions that are so prevalent in this area. Rocky fire, 40,000 acres in a matter of hours without any wind. This fire. 40,000 acres with the wind behind it, nothing would stop it. It went through the structures, all of the vegetation. You can see the trees behind you that look like skeletons. Nothing to prevent this. Reporter we talked about the homes across the street. How did those survive . Its all of the changing wind patterns. It could be a miree yud of myriad of different things. Its just the luck of the draw. Reporter you see the streetsand you think the street is gonna protect you. This is the case, if you dont have the defensible space, even if you have some, theres not much that can be done. The spot fires are very, very prevalent this year. More so than last year. The embers have been going anywhere from a quarter to a half to a mile. Those fires start right away. Those fires grow and they actually bring in the main body of that fire to them which even brings up more ahead of it. Reporter when you have been out on the line, what have you seen . How fast the fire will start, how fast the spots will start and spread. The spread of these fires is phenomenal. I came in from the back side of butts canyon road, the first night, this whole area was on fire all the way to butts canyon all the way to behind you. All of it. Not just one at a time. But all of it. Reporter whe when you are standing at a distance, the entire sky. Yes. And it was such a crimson color. It was very, very interesting. Yeah. Reporter theres some kind of mixed news with regard to the weather. The weather at least this morning, its been much, much better because its been cooler, more moist, the firefighters a chance to get some of these flames down. But now the wind is kicking up. You can feel it. The wind is kicking up. Thats whats gonna promote the erratic fire behavior. The fire has not changed its speed or its complexity or its force at night verses day. The fire burns the same as it would in the daytime, the same as night. This wind is just gonna add to that complexity complexity. Reporter normally at night, thats when it does lay down. You are very right. The humidities come up. Its cooler. But it doesnt seem that this weather right now, the coolness and the humidity, its like a speed bump. Thats about it. Last question for you. How many injuries do you have, how many firefighters are here . Over 1500 assigned to this incident and it continues to grow. Theres more personnel coming in all of the time. The aircraft arent a problem. We have ample aircraft. We can pull more if something develops. Its an ongoing process if you will. Reporter injuries . We have four injuries. Those are the first those were four of our firefighters. They were burned and they were flown to Uc Davis Med Center in sacramento. At this point in tibl in time, they are they are all stable. Reporter one confirned death one confirmed death . Still waiting for confirmation on that. Reporter it will be a while before you get this thing under control and the folks, do they know their homes are gone . Word of mouth travels fast. Not all. But everyone has a suspicion. The fact that we were in the rescue mode, these firefighters and everybody that kept filing into this, the first several hours of this fire into i would say probably for the first 24 hours were in the rescue mode rescuing people getting people out in conjunction with the law enforcement. Law enforcement coming in from all different agencies to come in and get those evacuations taken place as well. Reporter all right. Scott mcclain. This is a devastating scene. Something you will see very, very rarely. The last time i saw Something Like this was the Oakland Hills fire in 1991. This is very, very similar. A lot of work to be done to get this fire under control and save any other homes that are out here. A lot of people hope be that their homes will be safed as well. Back to you saved as well. Back to you guys. Do you know how soon evacuees might be able to go back in the neighborhood to see what, if anything, is left . Reporter i did talk to one evacuee earlier toy, who is someone i actually grew up with and she told me they were told maybe tomorrow or wednesday they would be able to get their home. They know their home, every home around them was burned to the ground. Incredible. All right, john. Thank you. The governor got a briefing from the offices of Emergency Services which is on the highest alert. Officials say the fire activity is so extreme their computer models cant preict dict it predict it. I can tell you whether you are a rookie firefighter or a seasoned veteran, everyone is saying the same thing. Have not seen fire spread and move in the way they are moving in this case. Calfire says its getting some help with fresh crews and equipment from the pacific northwest, nevada and the California National guard. Calfire asking residents not to wait until the last minute when evacuation orders come. The valley order spread so fast. In some cases, people had minutes to get out. Brian flores continues our coverage with out with how people are helping each other. Reporter the valley fire came quick. I was sitting on my back deck when it broke to boggs mountain. Crazy. Unreal. Reporter ever seen anything like this . No. Reporter dave is lucky. He said he was able to save his home along highway 175. I have Farm Equipment and i ut cut a huge fire and i cut a huge fire break around it. We ran out of electricity. I ran out of water. Reporter many others who had to evacuate and ended up at the napa valley fairgrounds werent so lucky. You wake up in the morning and up go, okay. Everything is were just out and then it hits you. And you just go, okay, well, what can you do at this point . You can move forward or you can sit there and i have i have a beautiful wife and loving family. Pretty much what you need. Reporter the fair ground served as one resident new middletown. A thousand evacuees from all over lake county forced to sleep in tents, motor homes or even the front seat of their car. Despite the inconveniences, several people we spoke with were just overcome with the amount of generosity and giving of others. People have been fantastic. They are organized, they are wonderful. The outpouring of love and just kindness is phenomenal. I no he were i know were both used to being on the other side. Its very difficult to be on the other side. They are very organized. Seems like theyve done this before. Reporter many are overcome by the amount of generosity, not just from material goods but from Services Available here. In the beginning, we said it was another fire, surrounded by fires a lot this year. We thought it would be contained. It wasnt that big of a deal. And we realized it was coming for us. Reporter the red cross said they are thankful for all of the material donations but if you would like to help, they say right now, the best thing is to give monetarily. We dont have the resources or the personnel to store the inventory. Were asking for cash donations that can be used for an immediate and specific need, like if somebody need something in the shelter, we can run out and buy it. Reporter the red cross said the shelter will be here as long as is needed. But for many they are grateful for the help. They want to know when they can go home and see whatever is left of it. Brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. There are several ways to donate. You can visit redcross. Or call white red cross 1800red cross. Monetary donations are best. You can take a donation by text as well. Weve also posted this at ktvu. Com. So many people were forced to leave their animals behind as they fled to safety from the valley fire. Take a look at this volcano in japan. You can see its sending up huge plumes of smoke. More than 6,000 feet in the air. There are no homes near the volcano and no word of injuries or damage. Here in the bay area, so many, especially the firefighters welcoming this cooler, moisture air. You are right. We have fall in the air for the week ahead. We have cloudy skies. Cooler temperatures. Even a few spotty hours falling from time to time. A live look there over the baypointing you toward the east. You can see all of that overcast sky. Lets check in on the conditions out near the fire. Temperatures anywhere from 65 to 75 degrees. The winds generally light anywhere from 5 to 15 miles an hour. I do expect they will increase as we get into the afternoon just a bit. But notice temperatures dont dont really budge. The winds picking up about 3 00 or so. I see a reading here for 18 miles per hour. So the winds will be increasing as we get into the afternoon. And then dying down again as we get into the evening hours. Lets take a look at stormtracker2, a little wet out there. You can see across the bay area. Mostly cloudy. A few sprinkles, says it all right here in front of you. If we take a look at areas near lake county, napa and sonoma, we had a few scattered showers earlier. This will continue to be the case. But at the moment, mostly dry. As we shift into the central bay, a few scours right along the san mateo coastline and then stretching in and along the peninsula. We may have a few sprinkles along highway 28 a south of san mateo at the moment. How about the south bay . Mainly dry. You can see a little bit of moisture pulling in over monterey. As we get into the afternoon, that will increase. Let me show you whats going on. We have a system here. Theres the front of this one system to the north of us. And then we have a little blip right in here thats also moving ashore. The two combined will continue to bring us that possibility of a few showers and it looks like portions of the south bay may have a better chance in the afternoon. Its helped turn on the winds. Fairfield, 26 miles an hour, gusting to 33. The onshore winds over portions of napa, gusting to 24. So we dont necessarily want to see the gusty conditions over portions of lake county and napa and sonoma. But we will be breeze and the onshore breeze will continue. I guess if were going to have to have a breeze, its better than the offshore breeze. 69 in fairfield. 77 in livermore. Around the bay, mid60s to low 70s and 63 santa rosa.
