Ktvu has Team Coverage on the quake. We begin with alex savidge who was there as city officials gave the latest update and he joins us live. Reporter s day after this large earthquake and city leaders here in napa are really now getting a handle on all of the problems they need to deal with, of course, many buildings in this area were damaged severely in yesterdays quake. This is just one that were standing in front of this morning. You can see the huge gap running down the side of this building. This is napa square in the down town area. It houses offices, restaurants and several banks. This is one of many buildings thats been red tagged. Let me show you the scene. About an hour ago we watches as the mayors, california officials tooking a walking tour through the downtown area getting a closer look at all of the buildings hit hardest in the earthquake yesterday. Just this morning, city inspectors red tagged 16 more buildings. That means there are now 50 buildings unsafe to go inside. There are also more than 100 buildings that have been yellow tagged, meaning there isnt any structural damage necessarily but broken glass and other hazard that need to be dealt with. City leaders acknowledged this morning that several buildings that were set to be seismically retrofitted were among those that crumbled in the 6. 0 earthquake. The city manager says there are certainly lessons to be learned as all of this repair work gets underway. As were going through and analyzing the damage, at the same time, it gives us the opportunity to see how the system is working under stress and where can we build in redundancies and other improvements to avoid the problems we had or to provide improves and better linkages and better systems. Reporter and the infrastructure took a major hit during the quake. But everyone is slowly coming back online. Weve been told all but ten homes have their power back on and all of the potential gas leaks reported throughout this area have been checked on and resolved by pg e. But there is still an issue with water in this area. There are still about 90 leaks in various parts of the city and surrounding areas that need to be dealt with and several hundred people still dont have water. One of the most pressing issues is all of the buildings that have been red tagged. Close to 50 buildings, red tagged. It will likely take weeks to do the repair work. We understand that in talking with a lot of the Business Owners, they are hoping to clean up, repair their broken windows and be back open for business in the last few days. Students at napa schools stayed home today as building inspectors got to work making sure the facilities are safe for the kids and staff. Ktvus christien kafton, also live in napa with the latest details. Reporter were expecting a News Conference to start at about 1 00 letting us know when the napa schools will be reopening. Now about an hour and a half ago, we had the opportunity to go inside Napa High School and survey some of the damage there. Inspectors are going around that school around seeing if they are structurally sound. We saw a lot of notices on doors about ceiling floors that had fallen and the textbooks on the floor where they fell. The School District says class could resume tomorrow or on a school by school and even a classroom by classroom basis. Were still doing the evaluations. So we dont i dont want to be premature in anything. But so far so good. Were just like everybody else. We have a lot of mess. Theres a lot of things on the ground. Theres a lot of books around. Theres broken glass. Reporter the boys and girls club of napa valley opened its doors. The programs director tells me they had their building inspected yesterday. It checked out. So they opened their doors and are saying if parents need a place to bring their kids since the schools are closed, they are ready and willing to take them. We felt that that was one thing that we could do is open up today and try to bring some sense of normcy. Reporter and open the doors to everybody, members and nonmembers. Correct. In napa or surrounding areas. Reporter the boys and girls club said it will open again tomorrow at 7 30 if the schools are canceled for another day. The classroom inspections are underway right now. Were expecting a News Conference at 1 00 letsing us no know when the letting us know when the schools will be reopened. Christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. It looks like hundreds of people that napa may not have water for the next few days rge the quake ruptured a total of 90 water pipes. So far only eight of the pipes were repaired last night. That means residents can be expected to be without water for a long time and in preparation of that, the city has set up two water stations to provide Drinking Water to those who need it. Now, those water stations are at the los flores Community Center in north napa and the parking lot on the north side of pearl street west of main. If you need water, you are urged to bring your own containers. The work to restore power to shouse thousands of people to thousands is wrapping up for pg e crews after an all nighter. 70,000 originally had power out. As of 10 00 a. M. , the outage affected ten customers who should have power back. Pg e crews have checked reports of potential gas leaks and are now checking the entire area. What pg e is doing now is using technology. They are covering all of the city streets going up and down with a gas sniffing truck, if you will, to detect if theres any leaking going on. Now, there is a pg e number to call with any gas safety concerns. That number is 18007435002. Again, the phone number to call if you are concerned about a possible gas leak is 1800743 5002. Now, take a look at how far the road on highway 121 moved during yesterdays earthquake. This video taken from newschopper2 this morning and you can see how much the alignment of the painted traffic lines have moved here on highway 121 near cunnings wharf road. Light now crews are working to make repairs so far the work is not affecting traffic. The city of vallejo was hit hard with millions of dollars of damage. Crews are working to clean up the mess that the quake left behind. Janine de la vega has been driving around vallejo all morning long. She joins us live to show us some of that destruction. Janine . Reporter most of the damage is isolated to the downtown area. Here you can see georgia street has been blocked off because work crews were brought in here including this heavy equipment. This big crane that you see here. It is helping remove debris from that red brick building that you see right there. The elevator shaft at the top, a chunk was taken off with this heavy equipment because they are gonna knock down the two upper levels. Outside this brick building built in the early 1900s. Heavy equipment blocks georgia street. It may look like the quake didnt do much damage to the exterior, but inside its a disaster zone. The roof collapsed bringing bricks and debris down four floors. Theres a big hole in the ceiling all the way up. So you can see the sky. Reporter this building has been red tagged for safety issues. Next door there are eight apartments which remain evacuated. Throughout the downtown area, there was a lot of damage, storefront windows were broken. Locals say they feel uneasy. We see cracks everywhere in the building. Its an old building. Im gonna have them probably come check it out and see what te can do and if its safe to stay. Reporter more than 50 buildings were impacted. We spotted this chimney completely broken off and next door at the senior center, volunteers are cleaning up items that fell and broke inside this thrift store. Inside the centers rooms, part of the ceils wack damaged ceiling was damaged. We canceled the classes and hopefully well be able to manage the repair in the main rooms. Reporter mare island was hit hard. Three buildings were red tag and ten were yellow tagged. Facades had broken off and some suffered significant water damage. Make sure things are cleaned up, make sure everybody is safe and everybody getting back to work. Reporter congressman Mike Thompson has been visiting the areas affected in vallejo and will be heading to santa rosa and napa next. Its estimated that theres more than 5 million in damage here and with the state of emergency declared, Thompson Says he feels that finance 58 aid is justified for this area. Back here at home in san francisco, police are investigating the death of a man who was hit and killed by a muni bus while crossing geary boulevard. It happened at 1 00 near lions street. Police say the man was not in the crosswalk when he was hit. He was pronounced dead at the scene. So far his identity has not been released. A santa clara man was killed this morning in a suspected drunk driving crash near the lexington reservoir. He was a passenger in a pickup truck that overturned. The chp says the driver lost control and went down an embankment around 30 this morning at 3 30 this morning at alma bridge road. The driver was taken to the hospital and arrested on suspicion of dui and gross vehicular manslaughter. Back to our continuing coverage on the napa quake as we learn more about the teenager who suffered the most serious injury. Hes nicholas dylan. He was airlifted from the queen of the Valley Hospital in napa to uc davis after pieces of a chimney fell on him. He was hospitalized in Critical Condition but last night, his condition was upgraded to serious. The American Red Cross says its helped nearly 250 people displaced by the earthquake. At the shelter on firth street, eight people, including a baby, spent the night there. Most of the people who stayed at the Crosswalk Community church gym were renters with no injuries or without family in the area including one family who is displaced after a fire destroyed their home at the napa valley mobile home park. A red cross spokesperson says some have little or nothing left. People are very rattled to varying degrees. People had varying degrees of damage. Some people completely lost their homes. Others had maybe lighter damage and a lot of people particularly initially had no idea what shape their houses were in. They werent accessible. The first street shelter in napa is the only shelter red cross has operating in the wake of the earthquake. The second shelter that opened in vallejo has now closed. Were still receiving more images from the damage from yesterdays earthquake. These were photos sent from us from a viewer, jesus. He says he took the pictures at the Whole Foods Market on Bel Air Plaza in napa. As you can see, hundreds of bottles of wine and other beverages were tossed from the shelves during the earthquake. Theres also a lot of concern about the possible economic losses. Some buildings are damaged or have broken windows. A lot of the stores lost merchandise that fell from the shelves and broke. That includes glassware, antiques and bottles. At some wineries, wine bled out on the floors. Some Business Owners said they are working on reopening as soon as possible. We hope tomorrow or wednesday at the latest we will be open. Maybe not the way we like it. But at least well be open. The city is suggesting that tourists call ahead before coming to napa to make sure hotels are ready for visitors. People are turning to twitter rally for the wine industry.
