Happened. Reporter yes, University Staff are meeting with students who live in both halls to address their concerns. The meeting started at 9 00, and is not open to the media. A student i spoke to tonight said the discovery is a little unsettling and they cant help but feel a little unsafe tonight. A student found one swastika on the third floor of Washburn Hall, and a door in a hallway. Whoever did used name badge stickers and formed a swastika that way. The other was found in a common area of one of the suites shared by seven students, where only those students could get in. On that case, it was found on a white board. A dry erase pen was used. Both swastikas had racial slurs by them. Both have been removed. The chief diversity officer spoke with us tonight, and we also spoke with students. I would say these students i know of are upset. Upset on behalf of other people. Upset at the existence of these types of hate symbols or that somebody would do that. I dont want people to take it further. I dont want people to get hurt, or people having to transfer out because they feel unsafe. That doesnt make me feel right, or make me feel safe here. They need to do something about it so people dont think its okay. Reporter the president is in long beach right now, but she is cutting her trip short because of this. She is coming back tomorrow, and tomorrow she released a statement that said in part, im saidenned and outraged by this news. I have shared our resolve to provide a safer learning environment where difficult issues can be addressed collaboratively, and transpatiently. Back out here live on campus i wanted to show you, there is a Campus Police officer guarding the door of Washburn Hall to create a safe presence for students. Campus police, they are conducting an investigation. Theyre interviewing students, and they ask anyone with information to contact them as the school is taking this matter very seriously. What kind of consequences could happen to the student or students behind this . Reporter yes, we asked that question, and they want to emphasize, its still early on, in the early stages of the investigation, but whoever is behind this, could have to take some educational intervention programs, and also could possibly be expelled. All right, Azenith Smith in san jose for us tonight. This latest incident comes as san jose state tries to improve the Racial Climate on campus. Back in february, three former students were found guilty of misdemeanor battery for crimes committed in 2013 against their African American roommate. The students were accused of hanging a Confederate Flag in their room, hanging a bike lock around his neck and using racial slurs. The governor has announced a state of emergency in charlotte, and called in the national guard, fouling a second night of protests. Protesters rushed police, and officers fired tear gas in response. Demonstrators are angry about the killing of 43yearold keith scott yesterday. Police say scott ignored repeated demands to drop a gun, but neighborhood residents claim he was actually holding a book, not a gun, as he was waiting for his son to get off a school bus. Scott was black, so was the officer who shot him. Some members of the community are now pushing for an economic boycott of charlotte. Im talking about a massive boycott. No more walmart, no more mcdonalds. No more of these things that support the police and the police that kill us. One protester was shot during tonights protest, and tonight is listed in critical condition. Six officers and two other civilians also suffered minor injuries tonight. The president ial candidates campaigned in primarily African American communities today, and both said they were troubled by the deadly shootings in charlotte, and tulsa, oklahoma. During the fox news town hall in cleveland, Republican Donald Trump said he would work to improve life in the inner cities, and he advocated the use of the controversial stop and frisk technique to prevent violence. I would do stop and frisk. I think you have to. We did it in new york and it worked incredibly well, and you have to be proactive. However in 2013 a federal court found the practice could be discriminating. Democrat Hillary Clinton campaigned in orlando today. She said Many Police Chiefs have told her, theyre committed to reforms saying theyre necessary for the safety of both officers and the community. We have two more names to add to a list of African Americans killed by Police Officers in these encounters. Its unbearable. And it needs to become intolerable. The former secretary of state also expressed support for Law Enforcement saying america is safer when communities respect the police, and the police respect communities. A unique dialogue about Race Relations is bringing together young people at a barbershop in san jose. Every two weeks they meet and discuss life lessons. Amber lee is at the barbershop, where she got to watch tonights gathering. About 20 students gathered here at barbers inc. In downtown san jose tonight. They talked about current trending topics, which included the two Police Killings in tulsa and charlotte. You cant seem to escape a black, a black person, usually male, getting killed by the police and it making national news. Its almost impossible. Reporter Jamaal Williams is assistant director of tutorials for san jose state. He came up with the idea of getting students together at a barbershop, a safe space to have conversations. Why does it have to be violent. Were looked at as a threat. Reporter asking complex questions, such as why the suspect of the terrorist attacks in new york, and new jersey is alive, but a black man whose car broke down in tulsa was killed by police. Are you saying that were worse than terrorists . It makes you angry. It makes you sad. It makes you anxious to do something. Reporter getting a free hair cut, while finding ways to be part of the solution. It just kills me that we sit here and say we complain about the police, were not going to actively be a part of criminal justice or become officers. Procedural justice a course, where its really giving people a voice, treat them with respect. Theres a Community Component to that as well, where the community will come in. Reporter two weeks ago, the students met with eddie garcia, Campus Police chief and six others. Republican Donald Trumps promote of stop and frisk they say only promotes police bias. Whether youre innocent or not, youre going to be stopped and checked, which is not going to have a good mindset for the young men that are growing up. Reporter they say change takes time, but there is hope that barbershop talks can help financiers. Were more than capable. Reporter if students and staff tell me they plan to meet with San Jose Police again to continue their dialogue. Amber, thank you. Now to an act of kindness involving a Police Officer and an African American teenager. Its the story of a young man from vallejo who was spending four hours a day walking to and from his job, as ktvus Christina Rendon found, he was trying to save money for a car and college when that officer took notice. Ive been walking far distances since i was about 10 00. 18yearold Jourdan Duncan has been walking to work since may, after his car broke down, and he wont ask for rides. I dont want to feel like im a burden to people, so i take the initiative to handle myself, in my own way, to where i need to go from point a to point b. Duncan works in benicia, its about a two hour commute each way on foot, up and down hills, through city streets. Four hours all together. I got used to the walking. Its not hard to walk. Just happened to be going down industrial when i saw him walking. Reporter corporal keffer saw him walking. I said you walk from work to vallejo. I was like, i have no other way. Reporter the two got together. Keffer talked about life as an officer. And dunken talked about his aspirations to be an officer. He and the members of the benicia Police Officers association surprised duncan at work on monday with a new mountain bike. Theres not a lot of 18year olds out there that have this dedication, and this work ethic. We just wanted to make sure that he knew, how much i actually appreciated what hes doing. Reporter duncan was shocked. You know, not all officers are bad. Reporter hes quickly learned how to handle the bike, and it cuts his travel time in half. This bike is my best friend. My best friend right here. I love this bike. Reporter duncan is extremely grateful, and after hearing about his desire to be a Police Officer, the department is working on getting him a ride along in the coming weeks. A man they say is this man. Is it a case of mistaken identity . Or a miscarriage of true justice . Thats definitely him. Not a lot of money were talking about here, but its still a big deal to some Small Business owners around clement street in san francisco. They say they cant afford any loss, even a small one. And tonight, they cant understand why the suspect is still free. Investigative reporter, ross polumbo with a story youll only see on ktvu. Reporter this is the man that we found based on the witness description. Businesses believe this is the same guy, the correct guy. So why havent Police Arrested him yet . We get a lot of thanks, even on a daily basis. It makes it worthwhile. Reporter abby works and bringing in the business. It not only feeds and nourishes the richmond, but it fuels a love of food. Being an artist, but different. Reporter and different is what sara bacon says came walking into her small restaurant. So what did he want . He wanted money. He wanted cash. He wanted money right out of our register. Reporter the money was for a refund. The salads this man says he ordered that were dry, even contained hair. The items that he had a problem with, added up to about 50, and he wanted that cash in hand, and he would not leave. Reporter when he couldnt remember exactly when he was there. Couldnt remember exactly what he ordered. Couldnt remember exactly what the problem was. The reason why he wanted refund change. Reporter sara baker couldnt exactly return him anything. I could tell something wasnt quite right. Reporter she heard more that wasnt right. Told me there was a long hair. Found a hair in his pie. A long hair in my food. No receipt. So he didnt have the receipt. I was a little suspicious. It was on a monday that he came in. Were closed on monday. And he said he paid cash. I knew right away, this was something that he was doing repeatedly. Reporter so over and over and over again around this area. How many times do you think . I heard from about a dozen merchants. Reporter so do you think its a scam . Definitely. Reporter she called police, and listed seven other Small Businesses that she says claimed the same thing. And then posted her Surveillance Video online, calling him a serial refund scammer, using the name ali. For weeks all she got in return were comments after comments. Have people been recognizing you from this . Reporter but those comments actually helped lead us to this man in the fillmore. Whats your name . My name . Walid isnt it . Reporter similar to ali, but he says the similarity ends there. Do you think that looks like you . Cant really see. Reporter at first, he said he hadnt seen anything about any serial scammer. This is all over the internet right here. Oh, wow, thats crazy. Reporter then we explained how crazy it was that this pizza place that claims the serial scammer took them for money and free pizza, also claims to have sent that pizza to someone named ali sombadi on 26th avenue. The very same address, that we found walid sanvati coming out again and again. Youve never been to any of these restaurants right here . Nourish cafe. No, never. You never tried to get money back from those people. No, never. Reporter the very employee seen helping this man on the Surveillance Video says walid is the one asking for money. Do you think thats him . Reporter and her boss on the phone with him here says he sounds the same. Is that the guy . Thats definitely him. Reporter in fact over, and over, and over again. Do you recognize this guy . Yes. He came and got two refunds. Reporter Small Business managers and owners at shuberts bakery say theyre certain walid, and ali are one and the same. He says thats just not me. Do you buy it . Nope. Reporter why do you think all of these people are accusing you of this . I have no idea, can you just stop . Never been to these restaurants . Never been to those restaurants. Hes been identified to us as walid sanvali. Because he hasnt been booked and arrested, cant confirm thats the name. Reporter police say theyve been investigating a possible crime. Thats definitely crime, trying to fraud someone by saying you placed an order, and trying to get free money from an innocent business, when you never ordered anything in the first place. At the nourish cafe, they never gave me the money. Is that still a crime . It is still a crime, because youre trying to defraud someone to get money. Reporter and those who feel defrauded wonder why hes still out there. Do you feel a little let down . Yes, and no. Reporter more than a month after it all began. Id love to see the police feel a little more pressure. At least talk to this guy, and tell him not to do this thing. Absolutely. Is this sending a message that some crimes are not important enough to the police. Ive seen the story myself, and i think its [bleep]. You have seen the story. I got a good laugh at it honestly, because i think its [bleep]. Do you think its funny these restaurants are having trouble with someone . Yeah, i think thats kind of funny. Reporter but for Small Businesses, its a large, series crime. Its a big deal. Yeah, because it hurts. Kind of upsetting. Its incutting to pray prey on people who are really working hard. That stuff gets passed around. Reporter late today, police did finally confirm that walid sanvati was a suspect in this case, but they say there simply wasnt enough evidence to go forward in this case. His attorney told us, it is in fact his client, but said sanvati did not go to any of the other restaurants. Police say those other restaurants did not file police reports, once they do they will file the other claims. Police say they do not have enough . Reporter legally, he does not have to cooperate with them. And his story keeps changing. He said he knew nothing about this. But later he said he had seen the story in the past, and that actually he thought somehow it was all funny. That will be interesting to follow up on this.
