Listening area looks like sunny skies across the entire region today along with breezy conditions this afternoon gusts up to 30 miles per hour are possible and today's highs will range across the mid fifty's to low sixty's for most of us while the high country around Silverton will only reach the mid to upper thirty's tonight will be mostly clear and cold with lows in the upper teens to low twenty's across southwest Colorado on with us New Mexico will drop into the low thirty's sunny skies along with the warming trend will continue through Wednesday with mid week high temperatures coming in across the sixty's for everybody except Silverton which will top out of the upper forty's so much in the San Juans may see a chance of some snow showers Wednesday night but other than that little blip it looks like sunny skies will maintain their hold over the 4 corners to your ranges are also expected to drop back down into the fifty's and sixty's for Thursday and Friday the center forecast is calling for sunny days and clear nights to continue through the weekend and into the last week of October It's Morning Edition from n.p.r. News I'm Noel King and I'm Rachel Martin 5 days that was what Turkey had agreed to a pause in the fighting with Kurds across the border in Syria that pause is part of an agreement between the u.s. And Turkey but it was President Trump who greenlit the removal of u.s. Troops from the border opening the door for the Turkish attacks in the 1st place President Trump said he was removing u.s. Troops in quote bringing them home but now his secretary of defense says those troops are not coming by. The u.s. Instead they're redeploying to Iraq where thousands of Kurdish civilians are now looking for safety N.P.R.'s Dina raft joins us from a refugee camp in northwest Iraq Jane good morning can you just start off just describe where you are exactly and and what you're seeing was it looked like was it sounds like. Yeah we're at the bar to rush refugee camp it's about 100 miles east of the Syrian border and right now we're on this road where trucks are coming through it's a gravel road and it's surrounded by wire fences on one side of the fence there are people selling fruit and selling snacks and on the other side there are refugees crowding there and I'm in front of a line where there are people lined up to register there been almost $4000.00 refugees who have come so far so they're fleeing of course the fighting but also they don't believe in that cease fire agreement and in fact there are some who believe the ceasefire agreement doesn't actually end until tomorrow so there's a lot of confusion over that either the Syrian Kurdish forces have pulled out from a key town but still there are more steps to be taken but I imagine you're hearing all kinds of stories from those people who don't believe the ceasefire is real what are they what are they telling you about their own personal circumstances absolutely heartbreaking almost unimaginable there was one woman who had arrived with her 4 children one of them had barely any clothes she said they had walked for hours to get to the border and they actually came from Ain which is that key border town that that Syrian Kurdish forces withdrew from she has been displaced several times like most of the people here there was another woman who arrived with her child who was injured in a landmine and there are just all sorts of stories from years of displacement and we spoke to a u.n.h.c.r. Official Ayman r.i.p. Who says that you know they prepared for a lot of different things but it's really hard to prepare for this what you see right now in this kind of this video best case scenario just $5000.00 maybe a few of the thousands but the worst case scenario would be much bigger numbers than than this so that again we're confronted with a situation that brings us back to square one a new camp and a new flights from Syria no doubt as they get ready for more and more refugees who are coming in so Jane I want to ask you know I referenced it in the it into. Duction but u.s. Troops who were supposed to be quote coming home according to President Tom are now going to Iraq looking to us. Yeah yeah there is that so this is part of the withdrawal of u.s. Troops it was a large convoy forces announced by the u.s. Military and they were out this morning that it crossed the border left a base near the Turkish border arrived and you're below a Kurdish city in Iraq there are dozens of armored vehicles there destined according to the u.s. Defense secretary to go to a base in western Iraq preexistent base where he says they will continue to fight ISIS any idea how they're going to be received I mean given that the Kurds see the u.s. Forces of having abandoned them in Syria. Well this whole thing has left a lot of allies and former allies and would be allies thinking they can't really trust the United States so it doesn't mean they won't continue to work with them Iraqi forces Iraqi military certainly will Kurdish forces have to but it's certainly removed a lot of the trust that was there N.P.R.'s Jane Arraf thanks Jane thank you Boeing says it hopes to have the 737 Max chip back in service by the end of this year and that model was involved in 2 crashes in the past 12 months one off the coast of Indonesia one in Ethiopia 346 people died and regulators grounded the plane for an investigation now the families of the plane crash victims are trying to keep it grounded N.P.R.'s Jim Soorley has a story Michael Steele nowheres an Orthodox Christian cross made in Ethiopia to remember his daughter salmiya She was light she was beautiful she was intellectual She had great judgment she was a leader she was always bringing us together she was always connecting reaching out Sami as Stu Mo was $24.00 and she just taken a job at a development organization she texted her family in Massachusetts to say she'd gotten. On an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi that night they learned the plane she was on had crashed and we knew there was a crash we didn't know there was no survivors and so we decided we have to get there and she might be injured in a field. We got in our car and started driving to j.f.k. To find a plane and on the way down to some point we heard there were no survivors the stew most had lost another child to cancer years before Sammy as death left them numb with grief stew most says struggling to cope with the fact that their family had become smaller then in April they read that the plane could be back in the air by fall and that stirred them into action or traumatized we don't want to be doing this but we want to avoid a 3rd crash if someone had. Been more active after the Lion Air crash in Indonesia. Maybe this crash wouldn't have happened the stu most have joined dozens of families suing Boeing these families have become a driving force in the effort to keep the plane from flying too soon the families say the plane shouldn't fly until questions about its safety are answered lead attorney Robert Clifford points out that the 737 Max has been dramatically redesigned since it started flying 50 years ago we're talking about Kitty Hawk versus going to the moon in terms of all the technologies and issues of flight safety that the 737 of today does it looks nothing like and is nothing like the 737 hold the controversy over the plane has intensified lately messages released last week indicate that a top pilot at Boeing had warned 2 years before the crashes that the plane was difficult to control in flight simulation the families want to complete recertify cation of the 737 Max recertification is a kind of soup to nuts examination of the plane's design such a move would be a financial disaster for Boeing the $737.00 Max is Boeing's best selling plane and the longer it's grounded the more market share Boeing loses Peter Goelz is a former managing director of the National Transportation Safety Board it is a very expensive decision and it adds hundreds of millions of dollars and years to the process and so it's not a decision that's made lightly for that reason a complete recertification is considered unlikely aviation consultant Richard Aboulafia says it's also not clear it's necessary the crashes occurred after redesign of the plane's autopilot system these changes could force the plane's nose down in rare situations confusing the crew the mistakes are pretty clear. In other words I don't see how this is at all a game play and once those changes are made for its part Boeing said in a statement that it continues to collaborate with regulators on the process they've laid out for certifying the plane's software and safely returning the $737.00 Max to service. Says there needs to be accountability for what happened they should have people made the decisions that that killed my daughter they should no longer make those decisions both at f.a.a. And Boeing the people that made the decisions that ended up causing these crashes they're still there the families also want to see a memorial to the victims erected in the remote part of Ethiopia where the plane crashed but the real memorial they say needs to be permanent changes in airline safety to make sure the 737 Max doesn't crash again Jim n.p.r. News. Survivors of some of California's worst wildfires in recent years have until this afternoon to file claims against the utility genie the company was pushed into bankruptcy earlier this year after it was found responsible for sparking those fires lawyers for survivors are asking a judge for an extension but for now many of those who are eligible for compensation may miss out from member station k.q.e.d. It's Morning Edition from n.p.r. News I'm Noel King and I'm Rachel Martin good morning this week marks one month since Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced that the House would launch a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump more witnesses have been called up this week to tell lawmakers about the circumstances under which u.s. Military assistance to Ukraine was held up but are they going to show up this week and what might we learn from them if they do Joining us now in studio n.p.r. White House correspondent Franco or Don Yes hi Franco Hi So who is up this week well we're going to hear from our congressional investigators are going to hear from folks at the State Department Pentagon in the White House National Security Council the key person this week is William Taylor the acting u.s. Ambassador to Ukraine he is a longtime u.s. Diplomat who has worked in the Middle East Afghanistan and Ukraine Taylor is someone the Democrats are very eager to hear from he was actually reluctant to take the job at 1st he had raised concerns about Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and his efforts to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son and as you'll recall Taylor is also who on September 9th texted the u.s. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sunline writing I think it's crazy to withhold security assistance to Ukraine for help with a political campaign right so they are definitely going to have a lot of questions for him can we spend a moment talking about Mick Mulvaney Yeah sure so he is at the center of all this recently because he was under the gun last week for suggesting at the podium in a White House briefing in the White House that there was a quid pro quo and then he tried to clarify in a statement and on t.v. Over the weekend where is his messaging out right now yeah he's had a really hard time walking back those comments of using foreign aid to potentially pressure Ukraine to investigate the 2016 campaign here he is defending his comments to Fox News Chris Wallace you described a quid pro quo when you said if that happens all the time and again reporters will use their law. It was all the time so in my language never said quid pro quo you know those comments raise concerns from the White House and more accusations from Democrats that President Trump was more focused on his personal ambitions rather than the interests of the United States but so when you think about Mick Mulvaney is comments and performance at that briefing you think about all the testimony that the House has heard thus far is there any indication Franco that any of this is changing anyone's mind in Congress on impeachment I mean I think there's no question that it's raising eyebrows even among Republicans take Lindsey Graham the senator he had an interview with Axios where he said he was open to changing his mind if there turns out to be evidence of a crime show me something that there is a crime if you could show me that you know Trump actually was engaged you know quid pro quo phone call that would be very disturbing you know Graham is one of President Trump's most important allies on Capitol Hill and this really shows what a difficult last few weeks it's been for the White House and those kind of comments are not going to sit well with the Trump team considering he really needs all the Republican support that he can get right impeachment it is important though we should remember in respect to that clip we just heard from Lindsey Graham that in order for the House to determine an abuse of power there doesn't need to be a crime it's a political decision so that's not the standard President Trump and his supporters clearly have wanted to keep the focus on the Bidens throughout all of this they did get help from one diplomat last week on that front and they yeah George Kent he's a senior State Department official who reportedly testified that he had raised concerns in early 2015 about then Vice President Joe Biden's son serving on the board of Bris Milah but that was turned away by Biden's people when he raised the issue with them it's worth noting though that that no investigations have found that 100 Biden's Roland Burris mill was legal and though it did raise some ethical concerns House Democrats still think they can get this wrapped up by the end of the year they sure are trying their best but it's going to be it's going to be a tough one n.p.r. White House correspondent Franco or Don Yes thank you thank you. It is Election Day in Canada after what has been an unusually close and really divisive campaign David McGuffin reports from embattled prime minister Justin Trudeau played up the differences he sees between his Liberal Party and the main opposition conservatives telling voters they have a stark choice will we choose fear division and austerity or will we choose to continue to move forward in a way that has grown our economy lifted people out of poverty and fought climate change Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer has been playing up Trudeau's scandals earlier this year Trudeau was found guilty of breaking ethics laws after trying to pressure his attorney general into interfering in the fraud trial of a large construction company linked to the Liberal Party and then photos emerged of Trudeau wearing blackface as a young man Justin Trudeau only pretends to stand up for Canada he's very good at pretending things he can't even remember how many times he put blackface on because the fact of the matter is he's always wearing a mask Mr Trudeau you're a phony and your fraud and you do not deserve to govern this country sure isn't able to pull away from Trudeau polls indicate centrist voters are wary of his stance against abortion all this has given a boost to smaller parties in the liberal power base of québec the separatist Bloc Quebecois is expected to make big gains and the left leaning new Democratic Party has picked up a lot of ground led by their charismatic 40 year old leader Jag meet Singh who has energized young voters much in the way Trudeau did 4 years ago we're going to let young people know they can count on us to fight for them all the way and we're going to immediately end all oil and gas subsidies. We're going to Riyadh money. It's a clean energy and renewable energy with a strong economy and facing my. Mostly untried opposition leaders at the start of this campaign most experts predicted just intruders liberals would sail back into office Canadian pollster Nick nano says it's now unlikely any party will win the majority of seats in parliament it's a dead heat in terms of the popular support but when you crunch out the distribution the Liberals have an advantage in terms of the number of seats that they can win but they're short of a majority today Justin Trudeau may manage to hold on to the prime ministership if so he'll likely need the support of opposition parties and that will mean a much weaker grip on power for n.p.r. Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese people many of them young are in the streets across the country chanting revolution this is one of the biggest mass protests in Lebanon's history and their anger is directed against political leaders who they say are getting rich while Lebanon faces a massive financial crisis and while its infrastructure crumbles N.P.R.'s Daniel Estrin is in downtown Beirut Hi Daniel I know well so what does it look like there what's going on well on the main street and protesters are already starting to gather here for a 5th day there draped in Lebanese flags they're holding handwritten signs there's a countrywide strike today so we're expecting a huge gathering and last night there were hundreds of thousands of protesters here in this square and throughout the country and Lebanon has not seen anything like this before people began 5 days ago with spontaneous clashes with police the police shot tear gas but now what we're seeing is this very Lebanese style Mediterranean street party men belly dancing in the streets without their shirts on a lot of vulgar chanting against politicians it's a it's a real celebration too but also a lot of anger and a lot of protesters are remarking to us how unusual it is to have Christians Druze Shia Muslims Sunni Muslims you know the entire spectrum of the Lebanese society all here protesting together because Lebanon's political system for so many years has been bogged down by these sectarian divisions so for instance listen to this 33 year old protester Mohamed Badie I feel you're voting. For the 1st time I see the people of my country standing deny that together at our games this fight in the I'm very proud to say on the knees because that of these people are not scared anymore they are not 630 and this is a I mean more Ok so a lot of optimism there and a little cussing you said you know we. We've said economic concerns are at the root of this what what about what's behind these protests Well it's really been building for weeks and years I mean protesters say politicians here have been getting wealthy and all the while public services are abysmal in many neighborhoods people have to order their own water tanks and pumps the electricity is a total disaster there are scheduled power cuts every single day here the power went off today while I was in the shower and you know people have to buy generators and vist situations been going on for years this crumbling infrastructure and really jarring for a place like Lebanon where where people are extremely well educated and you know speak multiple languages so also in recent weeks has been major panic because there's a financial crisis here people couldn't get u.s. Dollars out of the banks because Lebanon has one of the highest debt burdens in the world and is a major cash crunch and the solutions being offered are simply not sustainable banks are pleading with Lebanese businessmen abroad please come deposit your dollars here giving them very high very unsustainable interest rates and I think the final straw was on Thursday the government announced that they would try to offset their financial crisis by taxing whatsapp calls and what's up to free service that everyone here uses and that really got people riled with people riled What is the Lebanese government doing now well the prime minister has given the government a 72 hour deadline that ends tonight and he wants them to approve things like slashing government salaries fixing the electricity fixing telecommunications but the protesters we met simply have 0 faith that the government will actually follow through Take a listen to graphic designer Stephanie Shalala it's too late they've been here for so long we gave them too many chances and they didn't do anything with them and for now to try and do it seems in 72 hours it's too late so they're saying they're not going to be satisfied until the entire government establishment falls Wow N.P.R.'s Daniel Estrin in downtown Beirut thanks You're welcome. What's it like to be fired by a tweet from the president former secretary of Veterans Affairs David chokin has written a book that answers that question so can describes chaos and confusion inside the White House during his year as the head of the v.a. N.P.R.'s Quil Lawrence at Dallas welcome to talk about all of it the book is called it shouldn't be this hard to serve your country the title has 2 meanings children says it's really about veterans and it's about those that have served our country and the responsibility that I think all of us as Americans feel to making sure that they have the services and the care that they need should they need it but the 2nd meaning is hard to miss should own service as v.a. Secretary was rough he clashed repeatedly with President Trump's other political appointees in the department they claim shocking was slow walking the president's plan to expand the use of private health care by v.a. Schilke and was pushed out after 13 months his tenure was strange from the start it all began in Trump Tower with what shocking called a job interview unlike any other he would ask a question and I would start dance or he would finish the sentence Trump and then nominated him to lead the v.a. The president also named half a dozen other political appointees who would later work to undermine shell can. That didn't happen right away at 1st shell can help push a raft of bipartisan v.a. Legislation through to the president's desk at the signing ceremony of one of those bills Trump joked that he'd never have to use his reality t.v. Show catchphrase you're fired for the v.a. Secretary never have to use those words or not David. Never use those words a new That's for sure show can paints Trump as utterly unfamiliar with how the Department of Veterans Affairs works shock and says he had to dissuade the president from trying to close some v.a. Hospitals by executive order throughout his tenure the president insisted Schilke and was in good standing Meanwhile the half dozen political appointees at the v.a. Can says we're working against him it was very hard for me to navigate between these 2 worlds things started to look bad is specially because some of the appointees were in the V.A.'s press office there was a group that was clearly providing him information saying that things were actually different than what I was telling him and I didn't spend a lot of time trying to manage that relationship I felt that there are too many urgent issues happening for veterans for me to spend my time on the politics of it but the politics would soon eclipse those urgent issues an e-mail between 2 political appointees was leaked to The Washington Post it detailed a plan to push Schill can out based on charges of improper spending on a v.a. Trip to Europe and misusing his security detail shocking devotes a lot of the book to defending himself he quotes from a previously unpublished v.a. Report he says concluded he did nothing improper I wasn't that good at the politics obviously shocking was fired by tweet on March 28th 2018 the next morning he told n.p.r. That he had been pushed out by people intend to privatized v.a. Health care weeks later Congress passed a major expansion of the V.A.'s use of private care the a choice show can says it's too soon to say whether that's going to open the door to privatization but I do not believe that. The forces at work to dismantle the v.a. Have gone away v.a. Officials say the new law hasn't resulted in major flight from v.a. Care to the private sector shuckin says it's too soon to tell the v.a. Did not respond to a request for comment on former Secretary Shultz book Quil Lawrence n.p.r. News. This is n.p.r. News. And making good on his promise to the Philippines that overturned MacArthur had been forced off the archipelago nearly 3 years earlier by invading Japanese forces but Francisco seal nail Jose one of the country's foremost writers says the Philippines faith in Macarthur bordered on devotion Once back on their soil see O'Neill says MacArthur inspired hope that they would recapture their country but to return to today that day was the beginning of our new go ratio in Rome city is brutal. Your beige at age 19 Ramon Dina met up with the advancing u.s. Troops on Late today the 91 year old veteran was part of the Philippine guerrillas who MacArthur had supplied with transmitters and trainers from lead today the forces jabbed their way north to Manila where MacArthur would take Japan's surrender in 1945 for more Dina to remember back to the landing that made that possible is to remind everyone of the horrors of war we didn't plant one in your movie now because of a stripe on the prairie and doing no good to be done. Only Sure. As of late today the landing at the turned the tide of the war was marked with international dignitaries Rieslings and parades. Of opioid abuse was $631000000000.00 over a 4 year period that ran from 2015 to 2018 day a hole as managing director of research at the society the biggest single piece of that there was premature deaths and the loss of wages people could have a 2nd 205000000000 of the burden was attributable to excess health care spending federal state and local governments pick up about a 3rd of the costs Chuck slammed commonwealth attorney for why is County Virginia run through some of them for a podcast of the I'm certain Iowa how many hours of police work how many thousands of dollars in attorney's fees how many children. Who follows cryptocurrency and he says in theory letting users swap Libras tied to different currencies could help make international transfers easier and you could move your dollars into Libor euro's very quickly there are already commercial banks that offer this although not very many of them on the other hand your mac says making those transfers easier could invite more regulatory scrutiny on Friday the g 20 said stable coins pose serious risks to the world's financial stability if there rolled out on a large scale risks involving money laundering or consumer protections the head of Facebook's Libor project David Marcus did say this new idea is not the company's preferred option either way Facebook says it wants to launch by June of next year. Contractor into Cannon stacking lumber on an orange metal cart on a recent Wednesday at a Home Depot in Kansas City he's made lots of quick trips for supplies here and has grabbed lunch a couple times at the new Prophage inside the store just stopping that like hot dogs and software getting along with power tools and plumbing supplies shoppers at this Home Depot can now get hot dogs breakfast burritos or grilled broads for a dollar 95 what looks like a food truck parked inside the front door yard here you know it's you know next to his or so and that's the whole idea for retailers looking for ways to keep customers coming back to a physical space Barbara Kahn a marketing professor at the Wharton School says Home Depot is adding to the customer experience with food there still seems to be some advantage for many many customers to go into a physical store when you're a customer of a store that sells things like Home Depot death concepts the food in stores trend is not necessarily a new idea because they've had restaurants in department stores for ever and ever that's not a brand new idea but it is kind of taking a new shape lots of companies are trying it out among them Crate and Barrel the upscale home goods store opened a restaurant in its suburban Chicago store this summer with a James Beard Award winning chef and you can literally have breakfast at Tiffany's in its New York store Danding kind of food news media a trade publication says both restaurants and retail stores are trying to increase foot traffic here a retail store or a restaurant might be helpful to get people to actually either come in through the door or if that's not the case you know people come in to shop and then you know stuff and they get a buy it is another revenue stream that Home Depot says while it's 1st pro cafes in the Kansas City store the company will be adding others to a handful of additional markets this year in Kansas City I'm Peggy low for Marketplace that Home Depot smelled though in Washington I'm Amy Scott with the Marketplace Morning Report.
